- Have you ever wondered why the Salt Lake Temple is undergoing an extensive renovation? The primary reason is to fit this historic structure with a seismic upgrade that enables it to withstand high-magnitude earthquakes. Watch this comprehensive video (long version) that shows the meticulous effort and precise process taken by skilled engineers and tradespeople to complete the work.
That is awesome! I love how the church is continuing what Brigham Young said in 1863, "“I want to see [the] temple built in a manner that it will endure through the millennium."
There’s so many connections we can make from this to our own spiritual foundations. Something that struck me is the way the earth is supported from the sides to stop the weight of the building from smooshing it out. How many times have friends and family supported me and stopped the “earth” from coming out from under me when my own spiritual foundation renovations were taking place?
I am really touched by your comments.

Really neat to see the church take a proactive approach to preserving this building.
A temple meant to last through the millennium. ❤️
I feel like if you consider the sacrifices made by the Utah pioneers in order to build this temple as a percentage of their wealth and capabilities, that this, though enormously expensive and time consuming even by today's standards, pales in comparison to their sacrifices to build that temple in the first place.

“For hundreds of years to come.” Stunning.
I totally think that Discovery should make a documentary about this AMAZING work of engineering.
The extensive structural fortification of the temple should serve as an example of how we must spiritually fortify our families and communities against the coming troubles. Lots of difficulties, and miracles, will precede the 2nd coming.
Beautiful building and architectural design
People of faith showed Heavenly Father how much they love Him by building beautiful catherdrals and temples most with much sacrifice. This renovation is one year later and other temples have been built since then, It is still in the works.
Aloha hugs 🤗 I worked in the Laie Temple over 17 years ago we had
A Earthquake it had to be stabilize
After my two years of Service. We had to fly to Kona,
San Diego Temple is on 12 12 Foot Springs. AWESOME Structural Engineers.
THE most amazing Video.
That is frickin' AWESOME! 😃 I've been hoping The Church would make a video explaining it just like this. Thank you! 😁
This is amazing! Thank you to the producer who helped create this video for us!
Oh wow. That is amazingly complex. Kudos to engineers that came up with this stuff and workers to do it. The Church is awesome.
UNDOUBTEDLY, THIS SPEAKS TO MY PERSONAL TEMPLE. MAKING MY FOUNDATION STRONGER THAN EVER IN THE COMING DAYS AHEAD.
This is nothing short of a miracle of modern engineering.
I can't even fathom the knowledge, expertise, and tremendous undertaking this renovation is! Unbelievable!
This is truly an engineering marvel and will go down in history as one.
It simply emphasizes the great and marvelous work that is performed in temples throughout the world.
I feel so blessed to be a tiny part of this divine work.
I visited the construction site in October 2020 and was amazed to see the foundation of the Temple about 60 feet down.
I did a session in Salt Lake in 2001 with great memories.
It's fascinating just how much engineering, math, physics, geology, and other sciences go into this. Wow. Huge props to everyone who worked so hard to come up with and execute such a thorough plan. Of course that includes help from the Spirit, so I'm glad they were in tune with that and had the skills and intelligence needed to understand and act on those more specific promptings.
@ChurchNewsroom Thank y💖u for this informative update on our wonderful historical site progress of extremely hard work that is has been & is being done to our Salt Lake City Temple... Thank y💖u all from thee Church, thee faithful tithe payers & all thee hard working professionals in all your hard work labors helping preserve & restore our beautiful Temple that us members & all thee faithful members from way back in there days that worked there all in hopes to see this amazing Temple in what it is today & what it will be in the future through all the tests of time... Thank y💖u President Nelson & all those involved to help this hardworking project along... You all will be blessed & I'm sure have been blessed in many ways helping our church along 💖🏩💖🪜⛏😇🦺⚒🛠🧰
I wonder what level of earthquake this is designed to withstand. I've heard that the Tabernacle was retrofitted to survive a 8.0 earthquake. Having lived through 2 major earthquakes in southern California and seeing massive devastation, it's comforting to know that we are preparing to avoid such destruction. Incredible!
The scriptures tell of a quake that will be felt all around world around the time of the Second Coming.
Thank you for this wonderful share...it's overwhelming and I am simply touched by the wonders of revelations and gifts!!
Amazing engineering! I had no idea how extensive this renovation was going to be.
Completely unfathomable how man can think of these things and then implement them! MIND BLOWING! Can't wait until the temple re-opens!
It is a testiment to our being of royal birth. Heavenly Father's children have built beautiful cities, bridges, roads, etc. etc. on the face of this jewel of an earth. How can one say we have no intelligent creator?
The very fact this video exists is testament to the fact that we are almost certainly close to a massive earthquake in Utah,
I hope not. But the Church always taught us to be prepared.
When I saw this, I thought, "Oh, when will it be done? 2025? So we won't expect any big earthquakes in SLC until then."
What an amazing project. Engineering is a modern miracle.
The glory of God is intelligence. We are His children. He expected great things of us when He sent us down to this earth. The only thing that has hindered us from even greater accomplishments is the Detractor. (yup, satan)
Has any other stone building on Earth been given this much love, time, and resources? Symbols are worth preserving and this is the crowning symbol of love, looking up and looking down.
Thank you. It's nice to see how all the work will come together.
Makes you wonder why the church would make it earthquake proof and put out this video one week before the huge earthquake in Turkey. Heavenly Father is always with us if we are faithful. ❤
I had no idea you could do that to an existing building without destroying it! Wow, what amazing technology!!!
They must be expecting a devastating earthquake.
An engineering marvel.
It is just amazing and inspiring. It seems to me that THIS TEMPLE was designed and built to wait for this adjustment of our days. It is so miraculous to see all these holdings going through the structures. HEAVENLY FATHER lives.
I cannot begin to imagine how expensive a project like this is.
I am hoping they make a documentary of this renovation maybe even a history of the temple renovation since it was built.
That is very interesting. Thanks for sharing. I'm guessing that it was very expensive to do this work, but in the end it will be well worth it to protect the sacrifices of our fore-bearers.
It is an amazing work for all those who participate in it.
really cool to see the church use such a easy to explain yet complicated approach to preserve this amazing temple
Such a fascinating look at a process I knew basically nothing about beforehand
That's gonna be some earthquake. Whoever isn't in that temple during that earthquake, sounds like the place you wanna be when it happens
I am in awe at the beauty and engineering taking place.
I can't waut till I am worthy to go back in to the temple.
I love to see the Temple ❤
Wow! What an amazing accomplishment! The graphics that show us this are amazing also!
Wow. No wonder this project is taking this long. I can't wait to see it all finished!
Wow, that was a great explanation. I did not know all they were doing. Thanks.
Love this
I love this temple
This is a pretty intense process. Love the explanation, I was wondering how they were getting it done.
I'd like a sample of the dirt removed once the foundation is finished. It would be like the bricks from the Nauvoo temple.
This process is reminding me a lot of Jacob 5, how the roots must be connected to the top.
Absolutely incredible project.
Safe haven! A refuge indeed♥️👏🏽🙏
I’m amazed how they design this project. But trying to follow up on most steps they put together on the foundation is difficult. As a student studying architecture I am anxious how everything is put in place.
Thus is an awesome piece of engineering feat.
Very cool.
Amazing technology!
A more excellent way of building a house upon a stone.
awesome!!
Thank you
Amazing….just like the original building of the temple. It’s all amazing!!
"How the Titanic will never sink"
I guess time will tell.
WOW !!! A miracle from heaven................
You know they only did this because of the earthquake that's coming. Kinda crazy though how much went into shoring up the foundation. I thought it was as simple as installing the slip discs under the foundation. That was a seriously involved process.
As soon as I heard the church was reinforcing the temple to protect it against earthquakes I immediately thought this. At least we know a big one won't happen until they finish this. After that...
Amazing engineering!
It was great to learn about the renovations. The video would have been so much better without the irritating background noise (music??).
Amazing..thanks
This is amazing! Thanks for the explanation.
I love this temple. I wish to go there someday in my mortal existence 😀❤️
The millennium will be a thousand years. Read up, hopefully you'll be there. 😉
Reminds me of when the Lord told Nephi to build a ship, seemed daunting and impossible, but it happened! A great feat made possible!
Cool 😊
AMAZING!!! Just like the Ark…I’m sure there are systems and engineering going on that we probably don’t even understand…But God does!!!!
What a wonderful feat of engineering. No doubt we are blessed by inspiration and revelation from God, especially through His beautiful temples
Incredible feat of engineering
I just realized I probably should get more insurance for this on my house if they're doing this rn ;)
The temple is ready for the second coming
The Lord is about to shake things up!!!!!!
The salt lake temple is so beautiful I am sore that it will look amazing when it is completed
We love the temple.
They also said God, Himself, couldn't sink the Titanic... time will tell. I think the symbolism of the foundation is more in line with the fact that the LDS church is on a sandy foundation, really being Brigham's church.
That will be the safest building in the world
Absolutely incredible work that they are doing. What is being done to the interior? I presume the floors and their support structures are also being redone.
Wow! 😯
Has everyone in the salt lake valley bought earthquake insurance yet?
I was under the understanding that it was already built on "rockers" & Brigham Young had the foresight to put in shafts for Elevators & air conditioning 🤔 but then I was born in '61 so the last "update" was when I was 2 😁
Wow I just placed my order and the reviews are 5 out of 5 ❤
This video comes out and 12 days later an earthquake levels the middle east. prophetic.
I love the symbolism between how firm a foundation and our testimony to Jesus Christ
Church low key telling members a big earthquake is coming to Salt Lake. This is an incredible undertaking and I can't wait until St George's temples are both finished. Strange not having easy access to one.
Wow!
Amazing 👏 when are we expecting the earthquake
I have had a feeling that this building will be a safest space for Saints during coming times. It’s almost as if we will gather in our temples for protection. Anyone else? There’s no other reason I strongly believe they’d take on such a massive project.
Makes me wonder if my house will survive an earthquake 😢
I feel there is Divine influece in the work that will preserve the Holy Salt Lake Temple that has been a symbnol of the Love of Jesus
Christ for us mortals and for those who exist in the Spirit World. The Temple is evidence of the sure knowledge that we have that life is eternal and the work of eternal life goes on and on.
Do other buildings need to be strengthened against earthquakes?
The LDS church has been doing Seismic Upgrades on older churches, tabernacles, and buildings for many years. I’ve worked on some as long as 20 years ago. I’ve never seen something this complex though.
I'm curious about earthquakes occuring in Utah, not what I expected.
And this preventative appears to be all the way up to extreme.
Which is the only hopeful option of survival.
🙏🙏🙏
So is this going to be done to every temple being newly built and renovated? Is this why the Provo Temple is being renovated?
Is this how all of the modern temples have been built? Or will they need to do this to all of the current temples?
They have not been built like this. This temple is in an earthquake zone. Other temples in earthquake zones have seismic protection.
nifty.
