- A few dozen construction workers removed the circular granite capstone of the Salt Lake Temple, along with its time capsule contents on May 18, 2020. This was done for preservation and refurbishing during the temple’s seismic upgrade that began in January 2020. Two days after the capstone’s removal from the temple, the First Presidency joined a small group in the loading dock of the Church History Library to witness the initial opening of the time capsule.
Some materials, such as a copper plate, coins and medallions are in good condition. The gold-leafed copper plate, discovered in the north cavity, is inscribed with the names of the Church General Authorities present for the laying of the temple cornerstone on April 6, 1853, as well as the names of Church General Authorities present at the laying of the capstone on the same date in 1892. Some 400 coins have been found inside the concrete - mostly nickels and dimes, some pennies, a few quarters, and six-pence, three-pence, half-dime and three-cent pieces. Some coins remain unexcavated in the concrete. Books, photos, letters and notes, on the other hand, suffered significant water damage because they were surrounded by cement.

Yeah, it would've been nice if some being could have warned them so that they preserve it better, but apparently no one knew, so they flooded it with destructive moisture almost immediately.
Love It! Church artifacts are amazing. I hope we uncover more. Even though some of these things may seem simple they're important to us. I personally have a piece of granite from the original Nauvoo temple and while it's not much it means a lot to me.
Interesting how they could manage to build that ornate and massive structure but apparently didn't know that concrete is going to partially destroy their time capsule artifacts 🧐

It's quite sad that most of it was ruined. Europeans often look towards African cultures for what they can loot insted of what they can learn. Preservation techniques in African Egyptian culture would've told them all they needed to know.

Hahaha thats true and they lived thousands of years ago,the first Pharaohs dynasty originated over 3000 years ago, they certainly were an advanced civilization for their time. They definitely knew a thing or two about construction and preservation,the Pyramids at Giza are still standing today.
Too bad they didn't know that concrete would mess up their timecapsue back then.

Everyone knows concrete is very alkyline and hydroscopic- THE worst thing to have anything in contact with that is paper, wood, metal. The fools should have out the stuff in a soldered copper box inside
yup and today before we place anything in a capstone or cornerstone we wrap it in plastic, place the plastic in a rubber mold, place the rubber mold in a copper, zinc, or lead box, weld the box shut, place the box in a stone sarcophagus, and bury the sarcophagus in cement under a cap or cornerstone. North Ogden Union Station and Salt Lake Temple were built 130 years ago the North Ogden stone survived the Temple Capstone was damaged in the quake and the artifacts were destroyed and crumbled into dust because they were encased in cement and drenched with rain from a leaky roof and subsequent restorations. This time when Moroni goes back on the roof we will do it right the artifacts we place in there when Moroni goes back up will be encased in rubber, copper, and stone and will never get wet and the spire will be sealed to prevent leaks.
Did the original construction crew carry the orb and gold statute carried up there on that scaffolding? Did they have cranes back then? Are there photos?
I think there may be. There is a book - I don't recall the name, that has photographs of the construction. It was in that book that you can see a photo of the gold plaque that was placed in the capsule. My great-great-great grandfather's name is on that plaque.
My understanding is that the Mormon church of later day saints is founded on a patriotic hyeracy : but look what stood the test of time in this case *a coin from a young woman. 😔

I doubt it. The interior was filled with concrete.
Think of it this way, imagine putting a paper message into a bottle, and filling it with concrete. How would you extract the paper message from the bottle filled with concrete?
Were the items intended to be viewed at a later time and these people were ignorant or were they never intended to be viewed again? The chambers appeared to have been hollow.
