There’s something new in the air. Everyone at the shop last week had a rough voice and runny nose.
Good Video as usual!
I have learned to never worry about how long it takes to do an overhead, and to just take the time necessary to make sure its all correct.
I've heard of some techs accidentally messing up the valve lash adjustments on 5.9 and early 6.7 Cummins engines. Newer 6.7 Cummins now have hydraulic lifters and no longer need valve lash adjustments.
I heard of a guy who forgot to tighten the jam nuts back down and the valve dropped, it was a brand new motor too
Agreed. However I would love to have this guy wrenchin on my trucks over other mechanics I've met.
@@cs1962 why did he adjust the valves on a brand new engine.
Awesome Josh! When I worked for Cat I was sent out to a vineyard to do the overhead adjustment on 9, C18 engines that were used for pumping water for frost protection. Took me most of the day. Just injectors and valves but totally over it by the end of the day 🙃
You're a top notch Mechanic Josh.
Thank you for mentioning the torque adapter. I have had arguments with ppl about what distorts torque.
Cool I’d not question how you used torque adapter. Made perfect sense to me. Funny how quickly you can do those without the truck in the way. Neat challenge
Took me 1hr on my C15 acert that's been changed to a 2ws so I do not have IVAs, you're right feeler gauges will killed you with what "light drag" means. I have recently bought torque adapters all because of you, I have done 1 overhead with wrenches and it's a pain. I always torque everything, I just didn't know torque adapters existed till I seen your videos.
They are great tools, take a little knowledge to use correctly, but so do most tools. Glad my videos helped you.
You answered by question so I'm guess I don't have anything for this video. Keep the good stuff coming.
Nice video and education. Never used a extender on a torque wrench so I never thought about how to use one. I will remember 90 degree or at least try to remember it. Stay safe and healthy.
Enjoyed video. Once I get the turbo and valve cover off my DT466 pulling motor I am close to your time. The biggest issue is the big turbo on top of valve cover. If you ever come to MN in summer, I take you pulling. You can see motor destruct big time.
I have lost count of how many times someone told me they can adjust gasoline engine timing by ear and when I check with a light it is way off as much as 20-25 degrees. I make a personal game of static setting timing as close as I can so startup and warm up is quick. I like to have the engine start normally the first start with the fuel system fully charged, lifters set and pumped, cooling system filled and bled.
Well done as usual!
I want to see a video on the big cam 400 and any and all information that you can pull things to know things to look out for when it comes to restoring running and maintaining older engines like the big cam 400 I will be waiting on this video
Same thing happened to me about 2 months ago felt fine no voice for a week and a half tho. Really like the videos I’m always waiting for a new one 😂
I'm glad to hear I'll probably survive then.
Didn’t get to see this video until later this evening. We had company but I got the notification and couldn’t wait till they left so I could watch another video from my favorite Cat guy!
The video posted a little later than normal Larry so it worked out, my voice was getting marginally better since this morning so I did the voice over later in the day. Appreciate you watching the videos!
@@AdeptApe love yer videos!!
You’re a fantastic mechanic! Enjoyed the video!

Classic Ren and Stimpy cut!
Well done sir 👏 👍
Keep up the great videos.
Another thing if you aren't a cat fan. In the mid to late 90's some people stopped liking cat. And they blamed it on the 3406c. What they should have known is that as all engine makers at the time were having to meet at the time very strict emissions. They confused the C with the peec
Some one at Cat is watching this and cutting warranty time for overhead down to 6 minutes. Lol great video sir
ill do this next week and try ur way :)
I'll be honest - I wish someone had explained the way to adjust the way you do years ago - it would have saved me a lot of time since I truly hate the "adjust to drag feel" bit. Kind of like "tighten to snug" - who's snug??
The way it was taught to me that stuck was E-I-E-I-0. So if you set #1 tdc you ignore its companion #6 and #5 exhaust #4 intake #3 exhaust #2 intake #1 the O is both.
WOWZERS!!! IMPRESSIVE!!!
You are my hero!!!!!
Good looking out 👍
You guys don't have a spec shop to do the more major stuff like short blocks etc?
I didn't see a change of blinker fluid though so you have to add that time.
Like your finger tight technique 👍
I just finished replacing my injector cup seals and new injector cups on my single turbo C15 installed in a car hauler , with 1.4 million miles on , injectors seem original and are dated 2003 I cleaned the tips with oven cleaner and blew them out with compressor air, I also replaced all the injector seals and valve cover gasket’s, I used your video to do the valve adjustment and the adjustments on the jakes and checked the injector height , first time I did a valve adjustment job in over 15 years, i use to work on diesel cars in England like VW and Vauxhalls , fords but all had hydraulic lifters so they was no adjustable setting on the cam gear, I also has a brief spell working on big diesel trucks and some other ohv Diesel engines , the cat engine is similar to the VW pd engine on how the injection system works but the cat engine is a better design as the VW PD engines are bad for worn cam lobes on the injectors, also the injectors will eventually eat there way in to the aluminum head s and leak fuel in to the engine oil as they rack up over 250k miles so best replace the head when they do that , they are no cups for the injectors to seat in to, so that’s why the injectors do that and destroy the head over time.
Any way my engine runs perfect now and no fuel is mixing , thanks for your videos they have gave me the information i need but I’m sure you use to set the exhaust to 30 thousands and not 25 did that change on different years ? My engine is the bridge
Your engine would be .030" on the exhaust, many of the smaller Cat engines like the C7 are .025" on the exhaust. You did yours right 👍
your exhaust brakes setting is dependent on the horsepower rating,
Cool thanks glad you confirmed that, I was thinking shall I redo them at .25 😬, cool you replied lol, your like a local celebrity in the cat world , I've stopped at different cat dealers in US with my car hauler if I need parts like sensors or the odd seal etc all the shop guys know who you are when I mention your channel .
Last time my Cat mates did a tappet set fast, they dropped to push rods into the sump. I work on scania products, removed sump, retrievedbent push rods, fitted new rods and tappet set 1 hour. Why rush a easy job and make mince meat.
Thanks for sharing
The tool I use to torque the adjustment nut is a 8T0833. It is for torquing fuel systems on 3408 and 3412 engines. I heat it up and bend it to a ninety degree angle. Has a 3/8 square drive end, 9/16 box end and about ten inches long I guess. High enough to clear Jacobs Brake on mechanical and over turbo on electronic engines.
This one mechanic and myself timed each other on a rack adjust and valve adjustment on an 8V71T Detroit. He beat me by an hour. But his engine self destructed when it ran away. He was let go right after.
Definitely better to be thorough than fast.
whats the intake set too?
The old guy who taught me would put the feeler gauge in and then do the squeeze. He'd pull on the feeler gauge while backing off the adjuster from squeeze. When the feeler gauge started to pull out he'd lock the adjuster nut down. He's probably rolling over in his grave cause I still use the slight drag method haha
That would probably work too, there are probably a ton of different ways.
Really ilove you man ❤
The peec was a bridge engine like the 6nz but the bridge was way more drastic. Went from push rod to ohc. C-15 didn't have to make that jump.
Question for you......what would you expect to see in terms of the long term effects from not adjusting the valves? (i.e wear, damage)
I ask because I own a 1998 Nissan Patrol with a TD42 engine (4.2 litre inline 6 cylinder turbo diesel)
I have owned this car for nearly 10 years and can say with certainty that the valves have never been checked/adjusted, but it runs just as well as the day I bought it....and yes feel free to roast me for my lack of mechanical sympathy!
So you're not feeling the feeler gauge. You adjust to moderate pressure on the gauge and leave it at that? You don't drag the gauge back and forth (feel) at all??
This is how the manufacturer figures out warranty time... In chassis
I'll gladly do any overhead adjustments. As long as it's not a cummins ISM. Those make me want to set things on fire. Maxxforce nonsense.
Ever do a valve adjustment on a mechanical 3406 with a 349A Super Brake? I will get a part number on the tool I use to torque the adjustment nut.
can you make a video for torque specs using crows foot and torque adapter
Can you do a video on re-rating motors? And what you can and cannot do to them?
That's a wide subject. Cat made 1100 series, 3208, 3306 series, 1600 series, 3406 A (now called), 3406B, 3406C, 3406E, 3176 series, 3100 series, C-10, C-12, C-15, C-16, C7, C9, C11, C13, C15, C16, 3408 for the on hi-way truck market.
Take for example the 3406C. You have DITA, JWAC, PEEC, serials number prefix includes, 5KJ, 3ZJ, 8PN (parts don't like other prefixes) 4CK (PEEC only), small wrist pin, big wrist pin, narrow crank, wide crank. 3406A, 92U you have PCT, PCTA, DIT, DITA wide taper, rods narrow taper rods, straight rods. Starting with full electronic engines, 3406E 5EK for example, you had low HP family, high HP family, serial number breaks, 329-548, 549-1184, 1185-1820, 1821-53003, 53004-67192, 67193 and up.
Re-rates always start with what transmission and clutch you have. For that will be the highest you can go on torque.
Some re-rates will not let you go from one family to another. One re-rate that I know of, once married up to that IL code. ECM is frozen and cannot be changed. I just rerated a 7FB, 350 @ 1800 to a 400 @ 2100.
Nice
I like to think, if I do something right the first time even if it takes longer. I’ll still be ahead if I rush and mess up and do it again
Josh, I just had oil change done on my 3116 but I forgot to tell the mechanic to save an oil sample. How long/how many miles should I wait before pulling a sample, since I would like to get it done before next change. Thanks.
How do you do it with the rocker box still one
I notice you pinned it on the starter side, and your video in 2016 you pinned on the turbo side. Both were C7. I have a 3126B and not sure what to do, any help?
May be a little off topic but... Is there a asymetrical cat turbo that would work with a 5.9 or 6.7l cummins? Or not possible?
Definitely hate subjective measurements. Moderare drag, light drag etc. is completely different if i do it, or my 80 something year old mom does it.
Thanks for the vids.. would you be able to direct me oh where to buy 3406 overhaul repair manual .. thanks
Just compare adjustments on the tractor, how long it takes
I have a few question about a c15 acert how can i contact u to send a video
That’s why they pay you the big bucks.
😎👍
My 2005 cat acert 550 idles at 590 - 600 // too low right ?
Default from Cat is 600 RPM's. Drivers/owners choice. Lower idle, goes into gear easier, burns less fuel. Most drivers like 700 at idle. May not shake as bad, maybe less slobber out the exhaust.
ISX
first. fack it. somebody gotta do it
For those of you that think cats don't pull I have this to say: I drive a mxs acert. Due to Iva's she is derated. I don't know how much the debate is. I progressive shift and get 6 mpg out of here. Way caterpillar engines love to run anyway. I haven't found any modern engine that can get me on takeoff or pull with me up a grade. And in my application if it ain't yellow it will be a destruction of the week. Proven fact. Red green and many other fossils Lay dead Everywhere. In my yard we only have one bone. It is an sdp. Nothing wrong with it other than a broken crank. Any other color of engine would have a broke crank and you could see daylight in the crankcase. Next to this 1.2 mil yellow motor sets a 500 k red 40 thousand dollar rebuild with a junk block rebuilt by said dohc cam manufactures painted red send their engines to get a new life
mxs cat was paying fines since they ran out of credits on emissions and they do run well
I've done it in that time also. Not uncommon.
Pretty awesome Josh. Knowing this by heart basically. Destruction was epic. Great submission. You are Mr. CATMan. Simple engine designs are always the best. Cheers Josh. 💪👍🔧🪛😍
Thanks Jeri, haven't had a destruction from you in a few weeks now. Started to get worried.
@@AdeptApe yes Josh. Absolutely this is very concerning 😟
I do tune-ups on a 3406 e or C15 generally in 45 minutes from the time it hits my door that's pulling the truck in my shop tearing don't doing the adjustment putting everything back together and getting it out the door Cummins usually takes me about an hour and a half cuz I work in the Rust Belt and you can never see the a b and c mark on the front you always have to grind down the front do your marks and then tear everything down to do your tune up on it which usually takes about an extra 20 to 30 minutes to try and find all your damn marks you need and it doesn't hurt that I've been doing this stuff for almost 40 years now
I'm sure there are many people out there faster than me, I'm either dumb enough or smart enough to post the videos though ha ha.
once you find the first mark the left engine mount nut or bolt head is almost spot on for the next mark to be lined up so no guessing where to clean the damper
Any way I could get a way to contact you? I have a C15 6nz I want to get some info and possibly put in your shop. Thank you
Email at Adeptape@yahoo.com is the best way to reach me.
i can do better
No, you can’t
post a video to prove it
