So it got 14 plus miles to the gallon along with next to no idle time?
Oh 300,000 miles. That’s a lot less than 1,000,000 miles.
FYI, apparently Kamikoto seems to be found doing foul play, beware.
Those knives are made from 420j2 steel.. literally the cheapest steel one could use for making a knive - be careful people, way overpriced those things could almost be called a scam at least the marketing is just very dodgy and misleading.
@@AgustinCesar I've heard the same about kamikoto
The intro cracked me up.
It's nice to be with a good carrier who cares about its drivers. Had a steak dinner with a slice of pie paid for by my carrier on Thanksgiving. Thanks combined transport!
A friend of mine drives for them, he’s on the specialty fleet usually runs with a 9 axle rig.
I'm glad to see you gave the guy a shout out for bringing it in rather than just keep driving it until she blows. 😂
Thanks Sir for Sharing this with us. We'll Done Sir
I worked for Zollner Piston in Fort Wayne Indiana before they we're bought out. From time to time I would have to go to the front office to visit the head of engineering and it was cool to see where field service techs would send him failed pistons. Navistar (IH) was their biggest customer, but was told that Fred Zollner (owner) started with tank pistons for the U.S. Military and those pistons made the Navistar pistons look like toys. Yes, Fred was the owner of Fort Wayne Pistons that are now called Detroit Pistons, one more history note when he died his secretary was willed the company. Nice troubleshooting video.
Destruction of the week in the spring. Frozen pressure washer left outside in the winter🤣still watching👍
Wow what a weird failure. I wasn't expecting to see the piston skirt all cracked and deteriorated with 'fossils' in the oil pan. Really wild. Such a strange way for it to break. I was expecting to see worn lobes on the cam and beat up lifters. It actually ran pretty good considering what happened to that piston. Thanks for sharing this Josh! Hope you had yourself a great Thanksgiving 👍👍🙂
I want to see a video on the big cam 400 and any and all information that you can pull things to know things to look out for when it comes to restoring running and maintaining older engines like the big cam 400 I will be waiting on this video
Look up Pittsburg Power they’re big cam Cummins experts
When I worked at Alaplex we had 20 freightliner with c12 and out of 20 we had seven of them that did the same thing
glad it didn't throw a rod while you listened for the knock!
Testament to the robustness of the block to swallow that much metal and keep running!
Hope everybody had a great Thanksgiving!
You to bub
If you don’t care for the intertrashional alarm I can promise you the Cat 420F2 backhoe with an after treatment fault will make you want to scream!!
I’ve often wondered why we can’t turn the action alarms off in ET overdrive parameters so we can think..
Forty odd years on the spanners and I have never seen that. You learn something every day
Tennessee Tuxedo you’re the greatest.
Diesel mechanics and producing RUclips videos is your calling. Great video!
I've gone back through and overhauled a C12 where someone I believe left the wrist pin puck off completely. It was nowhere to be found and the pin destroyed the liner. There was a lot of strange things I found when I tore it apart. Definitely put the caps back on the wrist pins!
Good that it's getting a rebuild because when something is out of balance in a spinning engine other parts are met with forces they weren't designed to handle. Also, having some kind of warranty on a engine that old is good peace of mind.
Good for the owner using common sense & getting the truck to the shop.
Doesn't happen much these days!
Seeing the pads instead of snap rings in the piston pin reminds me that the British engine manufacturer L Gardner & Sons used the same arrangement albeit they were aluminium, in their engines from the mid-19th century at least. Might have been even earlier. Unusual to say the least but nothing new. Only engine brand I came across with this set-up. Great video, thank you from London UK
Just an FYI the sponsor is part of a larger network of scam startups, most of which have failed. Up to you if you want to keep them, but know they are a front of some sort and might become radioactive at some point.
8:36 just reading the tea leaves here: I see major repair in your future.
Skirt falling apart is not often a good thing. Hope Charlie gets better. Be safe.
"Hard water" season here in Michigan, too. But some days it's 50. Ya never know.
I had this exact thing happen to my 6.2 Chevy diesel. I heard a bell ringing at idle after exiting the interstate. The last part of the skirt was still attached to the wrist pin but there was a lot of it missing altogether. Put a new cylinder and rings in it and it is still with me to this day.
ya know way back in diesel 101 class they tell ya don't use either to start your eng in cold weather,, it fractures the piston . a block heater of some kind works best
Congratulations to RiverCity! I know zero about diesel engines, well, my son had an F350 6.0 and that I worked on, but nothing like these behemoths. Great video, I thought the knock was from a broken crank bearing in the sump, but the piston ring had me. Good stuff!
Much of it’s the same, just a different size.
Lynden transport had a shitload of these these pulling 105,500 and within about 6months of each other those pin buttons failed and would window the blocks. The worst one was coming down cabbage on 84 in Idaho with the Jake's on, and he went a long time before he stopped. I couldn't believe what I saw when it came in but it windmilled #3 so bad the only thing holding the block together was the cylinder head, and the crankshaft.
I hope Charlie will be ok
Great vid, certainly surprised that didn't go catastrophic!!
Amazing content, and we all appreciate ya!
Great mechanic mate love the video . Been at it while my self
Hello Josh !!! HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU ASWELL AND YOUR FAMILY....
Very unusual failure it looks like the piston skirt just cracked apart under normal operating conditions.
Hey Josh, learning a great deal from every video, contributing to that semi-complete Renaissance understanding of the mechanical world 👌 I don't own intend to own any Caterpillar engines, but, just out of curiosity for what the average operator has to contend with, what does a full rebuild on one of these four-cylinder engines cost? Thanks sensei, and keep it up!
Poor Charlie 😿
Another good video. Thanks.
Man, I like this videos. Wish they were a bit longer
Had a 3406B come in with a weird knock. Turned out to be a wrist pin missing the C clip and the wrist pin was carving a pair of grooves in the liner. This was a new engine still under warranty. You know that cat pays for bare minimum under warranty. Had to reuse bearings. The customer had to pay for oil and filter. Crazy.
Have seen the snap ring cut through the bottom of the piston. Cat then changed the design and made it wider. Warranty does not pay to make it new. If the oil and filter was contaminated they would have paid for it. I would have written the claim up finding metal in the oil filter from the grooves cut in the liner. Since cylinder pack failed Cat would have paid for one rod bearing as the other ones did not have to be removed. Warranty 101 class.
Well stated, John. The factory dealer I was at was like a watchful customer who didn’t trust anyone. Warranty claims were scrutinized.
I have a love/hate relationship with my magnetic pickups as well. Last week I dropped my screwdriver into a belly pan, while I was pulling it out the magnet decided to stick to the frame and knocked my screwdriver off into and even more inaccessible location. 🤬
That's unfortunate to hear, but magic like magnets have a mind of their own.
And to make it worse it was magnetic pocket screwdriver. Double magic!
@@SuperSecretSquirell sorry to hear that. That is the main reason I stopped carrying little tools and pens on my work shirt pockets. It is uncomfortable when your are working with your chest against something and absolutely not worth it to drop something in the wrong place
Josh, could you drop a sleeve in the cylinder with a new piston/rings? I guess that would depend on how the crankshaft condition.
Three destruction of the week's in the video!
Red filter on a yellow engine, ketchup and mustard give me a squirt!
Pete 385 with c-12 310 650k on the clock slung rod threw side of block. Installed cat reman engine tuned 410hp at 670k on the clock hydro locked and dropped a valve. Did complete overhaul, coolant was the culprit it was having cavitation problems caused tiny holes in liner.
You make some pretty cool vids
Good video
Interesting and informative content as always.
Love the blooper 🤣
Haven't watched for a while. Back again your content is awesome. Thanks for all you do and Hope everyone had an awesome Thanksgiving!
Thank you.
The amount of Cat parts I receive w/Made in China on the wrapper doesn't help me stay all yellow. Can't even get trad Cat yellow paint lately.
True ..I am furious and switched to Komatsu Japan made in Japan now.
CAT sold out to Ccp China.
The weak point on this design is around the wrist pin bore. first thing I look for is putting all the pieces that come in contact with the pin. Most of the time you will find a piece that shows signs of polishing. The rest will be rough and woody looking. Second failure is from the wrist pin flexing causing it to be ob-longed cracking the skirt. On this type of failure, you won't find any polishing as it occurred fast. The pin flexed from a dropped valve or over speed. Also I would replace the EUI rollers if they start with a 115 part number and check intake and exhaust rollers for loose pin. Update the flash file and reset the FLS/FTS per the excel spread sheet.
Rod knock number 4 possible broken bolts that hold crankshaft at c5
I’m gonna do a blind guess that it’s a cam, cam follower, rocker or push tube related failure…..will update after the video
Wow, I was way off on that one. On our C12’s we’ve never had a piston or bottom end issue beyond normal wear, it’s always been cam and valve train related….and there have been a LOT of instances of that. It seems like even using genuine CAT cams and followers we can’t get over 150,000 miles without one failing causing the other to fail, usually it seems like the rollers on the followers flatten out and grind into the cam lobes. With aftermarket PAI parts the lifetime is about the same but the cost is around half what the CAT parts are so it’s just more cost effective.
You sounded like Guilford Godfrey when you holland about the oil pressure.
I believe it's Gilbert.
Knock knock! Who's there? Cylinder 2
5:45 a.m!! What time does your shift actually start and finish Josh?
Awesome video, but the sponsor is junk. They use the lowest grade of steel possible and you have to go really digging through their site to find that they use 420J2 soft steel that does not hold onto an edge. Plus, the knives aren't made in Japan, they are made in China.
Cat hat record holder!
I had a Baldwin filter spring a leak and scatter a motor. They assured me they had insurance for that and I was covered. Yeah, they never paid for it.
Seen one of your alls flatbed truck today on I-84 12-5-22
Ouhhh that's a broken piston skirt listen to it wow!
no I don't wash engines off at 20 deg either but I do have a 2ft blow gun and a vachume
3:39- "hello!? anyone there, let me in!"
It seems you have a collection of "wireless" pistons, is that the new trend nowadays 😇
Arrggg... can't believe you jumped on the knife band wagon, they ask you to buy your square foot of Scotland yet. Fyi, these guys are based in Hong Kong.
They sent me the knives, I liked the knives. They are the sponsor of the video, so they are helping the channel. I need to do some research on them based on the comments I've been getting.
The last company used Baldwin filters they never had a issue with them why don't you like them ?
When the first 3406E came out several trucks came in with low power. Fuel PSI was OK. Baldwin fuel filter was restricting the flow. Swapped out the filter on a chassis dyno and HP would jump up around fifty if I recall.
What well happen if you mixed coolant together? Were are you located? HAPPY Thanksgiving
300,000 miles bummer but it’s already needing a rebuild
Piston buttons, I've been told lol
It's got a knock? That's ALL diesels! Lol
Knowledge thank you very much for sharing it
My teacher Adept Ape
PRODIGY Adept Ape
From Nick Ayivor from London England UK 🇬🇧
Charlie is a pizza fuggin chit, ese!!!
Now, did you rebuild the whole engine or just the piston that was damaged?
damn i was way off...thought it would have been an otr truck...
Your supposed to do price is right rules with number guessing, closest without going over.
Almost close lol
What's your best advice for breaking in a fresh mxs 625hp I don't have access to a dino?
There is a hole through my CAT 3126 oil pan. Does this mean I need to put more washer fluid in it
Was it a MBL? I've seen two like that, one lived 😆
Bridge engine like the MBN. Smart waste gate, bad about cracking turbo's and exhaust manifolds if you don't reset the FLS / FTS and update the flash file.
Your right that filter doesn’t look right, i over filter my fuel for that exact reason they gota match lol
first! love the vids Josh keep it up!
I would have just put a new piston in
Outake👍😂
It got the "Hemi tick" that's normal..
starting fluid ?
Wait! Why is the truck beeping like that?!
The DPF’s clogged 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Knives and the title thing are a scam. Research them as they're the same Chinese company.
You're welcome.
Can’t do trucks with exhaust leaks.
I see Any other filter on a CAT engine other than a CAT filter I’m gonna be mad wanting to throw it away. That beautiful new CAT colored filter it goes along with the motor and has the CAT logo on em. It just looks so damn good. Makes the engine run as intended because well it’s CAT on CAT. I’d say the same with Cummins. Cummins filters on Cummins engines. NAPA filters are not bad. That stupid crappy red filter on the CATs I see a lot I don’t like it either man
yellow and green should never be seen, except of course in the wash machine. ( in this case red )
😎👍
"Charlie" Has Issues 🙃
It's KaaaMeeKoeToe.
I’m going to guess 113,450 gallons of diesel
You wanna know what I think?
I wonder if it fractured due to heat or bein' hydrauliced into smithereens due to non-combustible fluid gettin' trapped in there some how... Hmm...
I can definitely think of worse brands than Baldwin. Definitely not as good as cat but better than Fram.
Baldwin is great for aftermarket. Obviously oem is usually the best. Fleetguard is my favorite
Ether shot
300,000/ 70005 Gal = Oh My. 4.3 MPG ???????
334k gallons of fuel
