I love how he checked the oil after he tried to start the Cat. It's a bit like asking your new lady if she's married after her husband shows up with a shotgun but still funny.
These 7.3s if they are healthy will start just fine above 35 degrees without them. I used to have an old 95 down here in Texas, & just turned em off & had em on a switch so I can use them once a year when it got cold below 40-35 degrees. She would always start right up & run like a clock. I’ve got a 93 idi rn & I miss the iconic sound & instant start up. I had done a straight pipe & a ton of tuneup stuff on her & even with head gasket issues & injector issues she still ran like a clock no blow by at all. I’d get another PSD for a work truck or as a 2nd truck & have my idi as my backup/oil burner.
I’ve had the same ether experience with an old worn out 7.3 with some dead holes. Funny how it doesn’t hardly help a HEUI, but IDIs love it. Working glow plugs and cranking speed become very essential
I had a 95 7.3 PSD as my first truck. The one I had was an X-Lawn care truck & it sat in a field for 3yrs. $250 later she was mine. Towed her home, threw a set of good batteries in her, & she frigin started right up & idled instantly. She had a fuel leak, so we fixed that & a few other things. Driver her for a year then had head gasket issues & injector issues. During that time I did a straight pipe, 3.55 rear axle swap to make her better for the HWY & that’s about it. No tuning at all, & didn’t want too.
It all depends on the overall condition of the engine and components. My 96 was parked for over two years, but was in decent shape as far as starter, glow plugs and injectors. Two fresh batteries (not the half dead shit like Rich has laying around the shop) and it fired up on the first crank.
When you were cranking that engine it had a couple cylinders with low compression. You could here the cranking speed up and slow down on a regular interval.
Of course that ol 7.3 will run. These 7.3s are great. I used to have one & love the sound. I traded my 95 for a 93 idi & id like to get another 95 after hearing that redline after that 7.3 started up.
Eh, I'm a mechanic and people give me running cars all the time. You become known as the guy that will get that piece of junk out of their yard. Some of them are decent enough to turn around and sell with minimal work, most of them get stripped and scrapped.
We have a ‘99 F550 bucket truck, yea, if that engine is cold, we have to put one, sometimes two running vehicles on it just to keep the batteries charged while cranking it, and with starter fluid. Once it starts it has to sit there and idle for about 15/20 minutes before you can drive it. If the block heater was plugged in then it starts right up and runs well right away.
Doesn’t have to be a fan of the motor, but it’s agreed that the 7.3L is a stout diesel motor in terms of reliability. It’s even been stated by many that it is one of the best diesel engines to be ever equipped in a heavy duty truck or van, even buses and box trucks. International (at the time) sure knew what they were doing and it is one of my favorites in terms of diesel motors.
@Patrick Baptist I agree. The only Maxxforce engine that’s decent is the DT. I drive a bus that has a VT365, but I told myself that as soon as I was able to purchase one, take out the 365 and drop in a T444E engine. I’ve seen some run forever, and the traits the 7.3L has are second to none. Ability of running dirty fuel, even biodiesel with little to no modifications is one of the traits. Brute mechanical simplicity is another trait, thanks to the 6 head bolts per cylinder and the fixed geometry turbo. Indeed dollar per mile, the engine is the cheapest and the best engine in the IH lineup. (Nice job on the project so far 👍. Might even video log my swap if I could get a bus cheap and an engine cheap.)
Those 7.3 engines do start alot easier when being turned over fast, as for ether, a safer way to do it is to disconnect the glow plug relay then spray into the the y pipe that goes directly to the engine. Just saying for future reference
99.5 to early 2001 was good 2002 started powered connecting and will start to brake rod after 500hp. what a deal nice little engine. and i do hope ya took the air compressor out and kept it to would give ya all the air ya need in a shop.
