    I'm a hydraulic mechanic in the Netherlands. Those are some steep prices for a simple cilinder, probably its even cheapest to get a new tube sawn of, welded and turned at a specialist shop and keep the ram but it'll be close to a brand new cilinder. You can also get your self a secondhand one, the stroke doesn't matter that much to be exactly the same. You can use a two way cilinder aswell and put a breather on it.

  • @barrygrant2907
    @barrygrant2907 5 месяцев назад +19

    In theory, no fluid--or very little fluid--would be on the top side of the piston. Piston seals are bypassing, because of the pitting, allowing the fluid to leak the piston until it's forced out the ram seal. That top seal isn't a pressure seal but is primarily to keep dirt/water/etc. from getting inside and ruining the piston seals. But that cylinder is toast! Someone previously tried to replace all the seals, but the cylinder negated any new seals.

    Good luck on being an indepent tech! I am a John Deere tech and have had to reseal quite a few cylinders, just so you know, its unwise to use compressed air to disassemble cylinders with compressed air. They can shoot across the shop and damage things while flying. If one is stuck and dont want to come apart i usually hook it to a hitch of a pickup and yank it with a forklift or pickup, with a pallet or something under it to catch it.

    Time 357 , that square block at the bottom of the cylinder is a velocity fuse. This is used to block the ram if a hose fails / the lowering valve is wide open the arm does not fall to the floor. This is also used on forklifts and other equipment.

    • @philipchesley9615
      @philipchesley9615 5 месяцев назад +4

      They can click it like this--> 3:57
      Back around 2004 or so, we had the "nut end" of the ram snap off inside the main boom cylinder of a backhoe which DROPPED the entire boom and hammer attachment INSTANTLY to the ground. Can't remember the hour meter or warranty details but dealer service fixed it good as new.
      They tell me now that since then, that design has been eliminated and changed into a rigid safety spec & it's impossible for "free fall" anymore. I never learned why. Always fascinated me due to this accident.
      Maybe that velocity fuse idea is now integral in the big rams. But I still won't allow ANYONE under a raised boom. ANYWHERE. EVER.
      (Yep, I'm "that guy" on the jobsite lol-I don't care what they say-nobody under raised booms)

    That’s a steal for 1,500 dollars. I would have loved to have that when I was doing engines all the time. I had to use a forklift or my crane on my truck. I have an automotive size engine hoist for gas engines. I would have rather had one like you have. Nice find! When ever I rebuild cylinders like the one on your lift, I ditch any rubber seals and opt for urethane seals for both gland cup and wiper seals, and piston seals. And I’d probably run a hone down the barrel. Of course with it disconnected so to be able to flush out honing debris. And I’d chamfer that pin hole with a rol-lock scotch brite wheel.

  • @dilauroj94
    @dilauroj94 5 месяцев назад +2

    Hey buddy. I would try to find a long ball hone and clean that up. Worst case scenario you own a new tool. I would also replace the seals. On the end of the rod is the piston. Underneath that piston seal is an o ring. Even if the outer seal looks good the o ring could be cracked. There may even be an o-ring on the inner part of the piston, which seals it to the rod.
    That brass part is called the rod guide. It keeps the rod straight in the barrel. You’re correct, that’s a dust seal or wiper seal. The lower part of it that you said was gouged is more than likely a split bushing, at least that’s what it would be on all the Deere cylinders I’ve built.
    One more thing. DO NOT USED COMPRESSED AIR TO DISASSEMBLE A HYDRAULIC CYLINDER. It turns into a missile quickly. I know this because I shot a rod right between a group of people talking one time.

I think the ratings on the side of the boom refer to whether the inside boom section is scoped in or out. Check the manual to see if boom angle is taken into account. Checking the hoses would probably be advisable. Since this unit will be hoisting large items that you will be working in close proximity to almost every day, make sure it is in proper shape, so you will stay that way as well. Protect your family. Looking forward to your continued success. Take care. If you get stuck, and have to leave the hoist out over night, cover it up.

    Fluid bypassing the seal on the piston and leaking out the top seal, overhaul with genuine parts and correct oil, will work for another 20 years until seals shrink again.

      I say it’s’ smokin deal at that price. That kind of used equipment (even with surface rust and cylinder repair etc.,), is only going to get more expensive, given the economic climate. The price for a ram seems high, might look at a whole new or reman unit. You will still be ahead.
      On a side note, given the good terms of your separation from Western States, they would be exercising sound business practice in utilizing you in subsequent contract work.., or at least giving you a call.
      Great video
      Thank you sir.

      You probably only need the pipe section! A good hydraulic shop should be able to make one up pretty easily! You can try to hone it, but depending how bad it is, it’s going to be hit or miss! I would definitely try a hydraulic shop first! Maybe they need some truck service work done 🤷🤷🤷🤷!

    A great move You need to start your equipment purchases with smart buys like this Make sure you get it appraised when your done(quick paint and hydraulic work, also a air over hydraulic remote pendant hoist is a great addition) Often over looked is not accounting for your tools actual cost That's a $6000. asset You should be credited for. You might be able to get a reman ram

    Josh, all your content is interesting. Don't worry about the subject, just make your vids, they're all great. Best wishes for huge success with your new venture in wrenchin' on your own.
    Not a hydraulics expert myself, but I bet a hydraulics shop would refurb that cylinder, up-size the glands and seals, and move forward with it. Not sure how much could be removed from that inner wall without affecting the rating of the ram. Curious how much damage happened to it on the inside.

    Been subscribed a long time - first comment. The channel Cutting Edge Engineering Australia, has many videos refitting / rebuilding hydraulic cylinder's. He uses a lathe to part the old steel eye from the damaged cylinder. Cylinder's are usually mated to the eye using an interference fit and welded in place. The lathe is used to remove the old weld, and prep the new cylinder for welding. During the eye removal, Its important to stop the lathe before you cut into the eye itself- once the weld is removed a hammer or torch will release the eye from the old cylinder
    Whats unusual about your cylinder gland - the assembly appears to have a dust seal only? Is it missing a composite bushing or O Ring that sits within the gland seal nut? With those deep gouges you are probably better to find a replacement nut or make a new one.
    It might be possible to source another complete cylinder off a destroyed excavator, but again the connecting ends must be retrofitted and of-course the travel must be correct. Honing the old cylinder is an imperfect solution unless you have a large honing table and then adjust the piston composite rings and rubber o rings to compensate / fit the new diameter - Honing the old cylinder, may be more work than its worth. Good Luck.

    There must be somewhere that does those or that kind of cylinder as far as I’m concerned that’s a ‘score’ of a purchase .. $1300 seems a bit steep but it’s an 8-10 grand piece.. hoping you get a good deal somewhere..

    Yup, the barrel of that cylinder is pooched unfortunately.
    Might be worth taking it to a local hydraulic cylinder repair shop. They will be able to make a new barrel and it's not always as expensive as you think.

    You can buy Hydraulic cylinder tubing and have a machine shop thread the ends (the cylinder is most likely threaded into the base) If not they can machine the old tube out and weld in the new one.

    Dunno what the machinist scene is like up there, but you might be able to have a new barrel made for half that if your rod is in good shape.
    Pocatello used to have the Navy's large-bore gun factory, and a bunch of supporting industry, but thats been a long time ago.

    Josh.
    If you have a local hydraulic shop that is full service, they can likely repair the cylinder by boring and resealing. They might put a bigger piston in it.
    Lots of options if you have a talented shop in your area… including selling you a replacement.

    I would have loaded it up and took it to WESCO hydraulic shop. I am sure they would have given you a good deal.
    I would hone it, put it back together with a new seal kit and test it. Then start looking for an replacement cylinder. The worst it's going to do is leak.

    It actually was the rod seal, it let water in and the water settled down under the oil at the piston level. Thats insane that it got that bad though

    It may make more finacial sense to simply replace it in its entirety. You see if the honing process would sufficient to try and correct the problem in the barrel. It would be oversized so a new ram may need to be fabricated, the current ram would need to mic"d to ensure no wear spits on the exterior, plus checked for straightness... but that only if the chrome itself isnt overly damaged, and through the camera it looked a bit rough. You would also need to do complete reseal, and oversozed for the barrel. I dont know machine shops near would charge to check it and spec it out. Simply replacing the entire thing, and then somewhere down the line think about a complete rebuild of this one. It would get the lift up and running sooner than later and save you a bit of money in the mean time. Thank you for another wonderful video, and praying for much success in your new emdeavor.🙏💜

    Dude, that's awesome--pulling big engines is a pain without one of these. Most guys I see on YT use telehandlers, but what if you ain't got a telehandler? "Time to do some sketchy shit, doo-dah, doo-dah." OR be a clever ape and find one of these for a steal of a deal, like you did. Super nice, super jealous.
