My tip: Learn to be a bit flexible with your routine by listening to what your hair actual needs at the moment vs just going through the motions. Example: Perhaps you always detangle at a certain stage in your wash day routine i.e while pre-pooing. Well, maybe the product you’re using that day isn’t giving you the best slip at the pre-poo level. Instead of forcing a potentially damaging detangling session, do it at the conditioning stage instead. Or at whatever stage makes more sense than the one that clearly isn’t working in your favor at the time. BTW Love your content, thx for the helpful info! 💝💝

I love sunflower oil. It's a very particular oil imo that has a good balance of penetrating and coating the hair at the same time. It's also a light oil that works for both low and high porosity hair. Other oils I like that I find are a little bit underrated are hemp, flaxseed, pumpkin, and apricot kernel. @@loreloreinaace5803 pre-poo is an oil treatment before shampooing. For me, I use a hair shaft penetrating oil (olive or avocado and babassu) and I section my hair and coat my hair with the oil. Then I put on a plastic conditioning cap and a microwave heat cap on top of that and let it warm and sit on my hair for about an hour before shampooing. Some people think this is useless because it’s done before the shampoo BUT, as I’ve learned from Curly Chemistry, it serves the purpose of filling the hair shaft with oil which prevents water from overfilling the hair shaft thereby causing swelling in the shaft which makes it weak and prone to breakage. Too much water in your hair shaft will actually cause more breakage. Allowing oils to penetrate first will keep a good balance of oil and water in the hair shaft prior to shampooing and your hair will be less stripped after shampooing. Pre-pooing makes my hair SUPER soft after shampooing and has reduced my breakage. Hope this helps!
This was so helpful! What really helped to keep moisture in my hair after washing has been applying leave-in, then putting on a shower cap to help that moisture stay in until I'm ready to apply my creams or gel.
One of my wash day tips is to pre poo the hair with aloe vera and coconut oil. I used to think pre pooing the hair was unnecessary but I think doing this and a few other things has helped in the length retention of my hair.
@Curly Chemistry So today is wash day. I added aloe juice, some essential oils, and a carrier oil to my conditioner as a prepoo, after sectioning and applying coconut oil... was that a bad thing to do? It helped with detangling tremendously! After shampooing I'll deep condition and then LCO and style. I also plan on applying a essential oil cocktail to my scalp a few times this week. Any thoughts???
Great vid! Thank you. In the vid she said she has thick hair. I have thick, low porosity hair. I have no idea how I would finger detangle it, especially dry, as it appeared to be in the video.
@@JosephineR I recommend adding oil to your hair, maybe a prepoo or simply some warm water prior to finger detangling. You never want to detangle on dry hair.
Hi! I’m using Bask and Blooms deep conditioner tomorrow 😌. Moisturizing with some protein. Though I have a question. When washing our hair, do you recommend washing once, or twice? Also. I use to only shampoo the scalp and roots, but once I carried the shampoo down the length of my hair, I found that when I deep conditioned my hair felt even more moisturized and took to it better. I don’t rub my hair together or anything like that to shampoo the length, I just let it sit on my hair while focusing on my scalp. I feel like doing this lessened the tangles, and also helped my hair adhere to my products better for moisture and style. Or is this just a short term win but a long term fail? 😂

This has changed my hair, Ms Ruby, for the better!!!!
I definitely can agree with massaging a liberal amount of conditioner in your hair after shampooing. It’s made a world of difference for me! Also, doing a hot oil treatment on my scalp WHILE deep conditioning my strands and letting your leave-in conditioner sit under a plastic cap for a few minutes before styling. Game changers for me!
@Tennille Bowens Thank you for the detailed reply. This is my exact thought process, the strands need cleaning as well, hence the globs directly on the strands. I'm going to try the method of applying directly to my scalp (which I do first), and then let it work its way down my strands as I clean the scalp.
I place my shampoo in an applicator bottle with a long nozzle top in a 1:4 shampoo to water ration. It allows me to place the shampoo directly onto my scalp. This makes it easier for me. 🙂
I agree, one of the things I saw give me improvement is pre-pooing with warm coconut oil (and not just a few drops...) and while I put it on I finger detangle. I am on the higher porosity side and it makes a difference on my hair (coarse, type 3a/b).
For a nursing mother with another extra vibrant child, and still, I'm schooling, I don't have time for finger detangling at all. However, I use my shampoo according to need (clarify, chelate...) But both are moisturising. Two things I do on my wash day that has changed the game are; 1. Ever since I read on Naturalhairrules about Applying Rinse Out Conditioner on Steamed Deep Conditioner, it has Cut My Wash Day in Half! 2. I also Experience Tons Of Moisture, and I'm able to Detangle In The Shower with my Wide Tooth Comb and out With My Ez Brush. 3. Investing in the EZ Brush and Leave-in/Styler With Film-forming Humectants and Fatty Alcohols has changed the game for me. 4. I've also started using Grease to seal the ends of my hair. Thanks for all your beautiful videos. May God bless you real good.🙏🏿🙏🏿
I like to hear her expert opinion on shampooing lengthy dreadlocs because it can't just be for the scalp when long dreadlocks seem to need more for cleansing. Definitely trying her hair tea.
For the past three weeks I've changed my hair drying routine that has decreased the energy drain and stress on my hair. I allow my hair to air dry in 4 braids parted in quarter sections for 4 or 5 hours or sometimes overnight and then finish with a minimal blow dry, then re-section the hair into 8 parts before flat ironing . The flat ironing is always done in the following morning after a good night's sleep.
Hey. I would appreciate some feedback. 8 months ago, I saw my hairdresser and she told me my hair was extremely dry. Back then. I used to 'moisturise' my hair with oil. I barely treated it and I wore braids mostly. I had no hair routine so it made sense that my hair was dry. However, since then, I have really started to learn about my hair and researched how to increase moisture. I do the LCO method that has been catered to my hair. I make my own products using humectants, emollients, penetrating oils, and herbs. I do the greenhouse method, scalp massages, weekly deep conditioning treatments with a heat cap. I always take hair pills (starpowa) and MSM Power. I have been doing this consistently since March. However, today when I went to get my hair trimmed. My hairdresser told me that my hair is STILL dry!!! I really do not know what more I can do, please advise?
Prepooing for an hour is much more convenient for me because I saw the difference between doing it overnight 3 times versus an hour once. My hair was much easier to finger detangle and proceed with my wash day. Even though, I did make a schedule for it on my phone prior, I have already gone in and cancel the reminders, so when the time comes I won't be bothered or proned to do something that doesn't work for me.
Your tip about the shampoo reminds me of the “just let the suds run down” saying. But I personally put shampoo on the entirety of my hair to get my hair clean so products will work better and also so I won’t have dirty hair, just letting the shampoo just fall on my strands won’t get my hair entirely clean but I get different strokes for different folks.
As usual thanks!!!! When using natural shampoo (indian powder) I actually use it on my scalp and hair 😕. The rassoul powder in my deep conditioner definitely changed my routine. My curls get so much love, they become so defined it's impressive. I also use marshmallow powder in that as a detangler and again, just amaaazing!
Coconut oil is my holy grail! Pre-poo; also mixed with JBCO, olive oil, peppermint, rosemary and lavender essential oils as my all-purpose hair oil. Coconut oil is also the only thing that keeps my very dry skin non-ashy all day in an area with extremely hard water.
omg needed that! thank you. wash days are just too much sometimes and I only have wavy hair. I can't imagine ppl with tighter curls, especially kinks and coils. I would probably just shave my head off
My tip for my high porosity hair has been aloe Vera prepoo (in a product) and then water and aloe spritz prior to applying my leavein. I’ve also gotten back to the LOC method
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. My best tip or trick is do don't buff your hair with a towel to get excess water out. Wrap it... Leave it for a minute (I prefer with a t-shirt or baby towel...) Having most of the material near the nape and edges to soak up excess water. Or squeeze the water out section by section with the shirt wrapped around it. topic request please: Can you talk about shelf life, which products should be avoided past the expiration date, and or when products should be tossed out. Eg...active ingredients in haircare, lotions, antiperspirants, toothpaste... Etc and possible risks.
Love the tips in the video, thanks so much! Quick note, Hairlicious must have Caribbean roots because that 'Scarf Method' is something that my mum, aunts, grandma etc taught me to do - and it works!
Seems like I am doing everything right except I wash my scalp and strands because if my scalp is dirty and it rolls down my hair........yeah.... will continue my washing my whole head, but all the other tips were great! 💕
Blow drying before twisting. A lot of women like damp hair when twisting, but I notice that dry hair produces less breakage for me. And I absorb more oil, too
Olaplex #3 changed my hair game!! I’ve been natural since 2005 , I only do wash n go’s, longest wash n go before Olaplex lasted 3 days. After Olaplex I get a 7 day wash n go, EVERY WEEK!
Yes, ma’am! Paper 📄 and pen 🖊 readyyyy to take some notes! I’m here for all of it! 2021 my hair will be down my butt, maybe even down my toes 😅. Thanks sis!
If you have normal product build up, the shampoo (no co-wash) will remove it. Also, clarifying once a month is important as well especially with the amount of butters, oils, and fatty alcohols we use on a daily basis. A simple apple cider vinegar rinse will do the trick, but please dilute it.
@@CurlyChemistry so you just shampoo your scalp , and don’t touch the rest ? I use a clarifying Shampoo every time I wash my hair . Is that good ? I wash my hair twice a week
This is my interpretation: Apply shampoo to your scalp area and work up a lather. Distribute that lather through the lengths of your hair to wash your hair. Don’t put globs of undiluted shampoo on your lengths. So you actually are washing your hair, but with the lather, which is diluted.
Preppy and DC. I did both when I was relaxed and continue to do so being a natural. Also, leaving my hair alone helps. When I do protective styles, my hair thrive. All in all, remain consistent once you find out what works for you.
Thank you Tonya for breaking down wash day in a simple and easy way that actually makes sens for beginners as well as seasoned naturals and relaxed. Bottom line easy haircare for everyone. This kind of reminder is a God send because we tend to do too much sometimes especially when we are product junkies or constantly trying out new things or even simply trying to figure out our own and understand it. Hairlicious is indeed an OG and even if she has relaxed hair, she has great tips for good haircare. It doesn't matter whether you're relaxed or natural, simplicity and a common sense approach in good haircare practices is a must. I loved and enjoyed this post. Thank you🙏🏾
Thank you for another fantastic video! Definitely got to incorporate pre poo into my routine prior to minimize detangling :) two things that have really changed my hair has been using a hair bonnet for a hair dryer when I deep condition my hair and being mindful of the stylers I use and their consistency. For example, if I use a light weight leave in, I’ll pair it with a medium to thick consistency styling gel. If I choose a leave in with medium moisture, I choose a light weight styler. Making sure that my stylers have protein and moisture balance has done wonders for making my hair last longer!
Lightly twisting in 4 to 6 sections every night keeps the tangles away and makes wash day so much easier. Also taking my time to let dc and leave-ins soak in before I detangle or style let’s them do what they need to do.
My grandma used to make me wear a scarf to bed every night cause she on did my hair once every two weeks, so I’ve been wearing a scarf almost my whole life. 😊
Yep I’m from the island and lots of woman tie their hair to cut down freeze. They didn’t use to use gel back them, just brush it down very well and they tied it down.
Have you done an updated video on Aloe Vera use? I have seen many on RUclips and it seems to be the holy grail. I don't have access to the plant, so I am wondering about the use of organic aloe vera juice? Should I use it at room temperature or straight out of the refrigerator? And how long would it last in a spray bottle and still be safe to use? Thanks for some guidance.
I am so glad you talked about shampooing the scalp. I have been doing the entire head. 🤦🏾♀️ Also I do finger detangling a little but now I know to use a little oil to help with the process. Thank you!
@@kcwilder5077it's saturating your hair with a penetrating oil after shampooing, then rinsing it off with warm water. I am relaxed and I deep condition using a flaxseed heat cap so I can move around as I deep condition. This allows me to have it in for an hour or more with reheating every 20 minutes for 2 minutes at a time. Game changer!
Loved this vid. I might try the scarf method again now that you mention it. It worked well all right but I just felt like the top of my head was a bit too flat but, boi did it eliminate frizz. My best washday tricks are to do everything in sections (especially shampoo and conditioner) if you have thick hair like me, and to always be detangling to avoid all those annoying knots and tangles.
Love 💕 your channnel. I prepoo. I mix 1/4 teaspoon of Henna with about 2 tablespoons of Dr. Bronners Castile shampoo. I also mix a few drops of Rosemary & Peppermint essential oils in with the shampoo. In 3 months my hair has grown 2 - 2.5 inches. I separate my troubled 😕 crown area separately. I have a scarring alopecia.
Great tips! Can you do a video series on hair tools such as the pros and cons of using different types of hair brushes, hair steamers, hooded hair driers etc.
Yes love your tips, I finger detangle, use propoo and it made a difference in hair fall and breakage when I wash my hair. Today is wash day so thank you for your video 😊💕
I apply shampoo (not too much) in my hair stands because I use hair grease. Sulfate shampoo and acv are the only way I found to break down the grease on my hair to be able to moisturize my hair again
These are really great tips! What if you have really short hair? You sort of have to put the shampoo on your hair and it's hard to work the conditioner into the strands
I was waiting for someone to ask about short to medium hair. Not everyone can avoid getting the shampoo directly on to the hair strands. I start in the middle of my scalp that is where my hair is thinning and work into a lather from there.
Squeezing the water into my hair before applying my leave in has changed the game for me. Not just the praying hands but squeezing down the section almost like ringing out a towel. My curls come out so fat and juicy!!
Pre-pooing is what I've needed all my life. I am also guilty of throwing shampoo on my hair because my hair doesn't seem to know that I'm Standing Under Running Water!!!
How can conditioning work if the hair is dirty? And why is there moisturizing, protein, and strengthening ingredients in shampoo if it's not meant for the hair?
If you are in a shower the shampoo does rinse its way through your hair but you're not applying it directly to the hair so it does get benefit of the shampoo unless you have really thick coarse hair then I don't know.
Your hair won't be dirty, because as the shampoo rinses from your hair the lipophilic tail attached to the cleansing surfactant will grab the oil and dirt from your hair and wash away with the water into the drain. As far as ingredients in shampoos, same thing...those ingredients that are designed to do certain things will still come in contact with the hair as it rinses...providing those ingredients are in the formula at an effective %. The majority of strengthening, etc ingredients are there for marketing, less than 1%, basically just there for show...not for performance.
I wash my hair when its braided. I pre poo, shampoo and condition without taking my braids down, I even moisturize my hair with my braids in.This works for me, when I do redo my hair there is less breakage. Plus it saves me alot of time.
Using a salicylic mask or wash on my scalp has helped soooo much with product buildup and winter scalp! I love prepooing w/ coconut oil because it makes my hair way easier to detangle before the shower. I have high-porosity hair but have been experimenting w/ jojoba oil as my sealant oil-do you think it’s still effective for high-po strands? Thank you for all the wonderful vids!!!
I comb hair 1st then put in loose scrunch. Then wet, put condit thru middle length/ends. Then put s.poo in. Rinse. Then take scrunch out and rinse again. No tangles!

@@CurlyChemistry Love your channel! Should hair be damp or dry before applying oil for a pre-poo?
@@lisawilliams8077 not who you’re asking, but I find it easier to do on dry hair :)
@@BeccaMoses I appreciate it. Thank you.
Two things I do on my wash day that has changed the game are;
Love your channel
This wash day I did:
Clay treatment, protein treatment, deep mask with oil rinse
Scalp scrubs are my new routine. Hot oil treatments and using a steamer. My fine, low porosity hair is loving the special care.
Working in 6-8 sections has helped my wash day routine big time
Sections are amazing!
The pre pooing with coconut oil has been a game changer; I used to do it and stopped but started up again. I don't know why I stopped!
Prepooing made a big difference for me! I used to have super dry hair and since I’ve been prepooing my hair it helped tremendously!!!
I add a couple drops of almond oil to my conditioner. And I’m pre-pooing with coconut oil as we speak thanks to Tonia’s recommendations.
Do u hv low porosity hair
Could you post your wash day? I would love to see how you put it all together!
Thanks for sharing! :-)
If you’re in a bad mood put on that wig, that hat, that scarf no reason to have to do your hair in a bad mood you can do more harm than good.
That’s good advice! I’ve lost a few strands due to that or being in a rush! 🤦🏾♀️
omg needed that! thank you. wash days are just too much sometimes and I only have wavy hair. I can't imagine ppl with tighter curls, especially kinks and coils. I would probably just shave my head off
My tip for my high porosity hair has been aloe Vera prepoo (in a product) and then water and aloe spritz prior to applying my leavein. I’ve also gotten back to the LOC method
Yessss. I do the same thing. I just cut up the leaf and apply it to my hair and scalp. I LOVE IT
Thank you for sharing!! Aloe is amazing! :-)
Washing in sections although Hella time consuming it helps reduce tangles so much less time consuming when I wash them in twists
Spritzing my low-po hair with quite warm water before applying ANY leave-in products. 😱 Game changer!!!!!
Or put leave in on while in the shower
My steamer was a game changer. I’ve always used heat for my dc but the steamer is the best for my low porosity hair.
Agreed! :-)
Pls which Steamer do you use.? The name pls thanks
Love the tips in the video, thanks so much!
Quick note, Hairlicious must have Caribbean roots because that 'Scarf Method' is something that my mum, aunts, grandma etc taught me to do - and it works!
Hey, thanks for the tips, as usual.
You're welcome!
Seems like I am doing everything right except I wash my scalp and strands because if my scalp is dirty and it rolls down my hair........yeah.... will continue my washing my whole head, but all the other tips were great! 💕
I use chebe in my sealing oil, I use LCO method, this has been a game changer for me, less shedding, Yay!
Thank you for sharing! :-)
Thanks sis!
Hopefully you have fine hair otherwise you may end up in a neck brace and the back brace trying to haul all of that around with you! :-)
@@sable7114 good suggestions 😅. If you cry for rain prepare for the mud 😅. So when I reach toe length I’ll have to do that 😅😅
Yayyy! Love your comment Tamanda! :-)
How will you remove product buildup on your hair if you don’t shampoo it ?
Right? Shampoo is for the scalp and the hair.
I also don't get it how I should wash my scalp and leave my hair, but I do what my hair loves
Thank you🙏🏾
Thank you!! :-)
T- shirt dry before applying my deep conditioner
Yes...100% white cotton t-shirt is smoother than a towel on the hair...and no dye with a white t-shirt
Adding heat to deep conditioners and smoothing conditioners (rinse out, deep) into the hair.
Mee tooo...cant sleep without one!😄
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Your insight is always welcome. Lots of conditioner and a wide tooth comb!
I have high porosity and I put a dime size jojoba oil to my 2nd shampoo to put the oils back in. Definitely see a difference.
Great video as usual! Oil rinsing has been a game changer for my low porosity hair.
Great advice!
What is oil rinsing?
@@kcwilder5077it's saturating your hair with a penetrating oil after shampooing, then rinsing it off with warm water. I usually follow up with my deep conditioner after to help rinse off the excess oil. It leaves my hair super moisturized! There's a lot of videos here on RUclips that gives step by step instructions on how to do it and also Google if interested☺
Omg.. thank you , thank you , thank you .. you broke it alllll the way down I am sooo happy that I found your youtube channel.. Learning a lot of things I didn’t know by watching your videos… You are a life saver. Thank you!! ❤
My hair steamer. I put on a shower cap while I have aloe & deep conditioner on it. Miraculous
!
After I learnt about pre-pooing my hair has never been the same !!! I use aloe Vera gel and coconut oil for my high-porosity hair... its amazing
Yaaaaayyyyyy a new video.. i look forward to all of them...
Thank you so much! :-)
I love how u get straight to the point
I am relaxed and I deep condition using a flaxseed heat cap so I can move around as I deep condition. This allows me to have it in for an hour or more with reheating every 20 minutes for 2 minutes at a time. Game changer!
Where did you purchase yours for
@@anitanwaugo6372 Amazon of course!
Yes I agree. @curlychemistry please do a video about this
For me it's matcha tea. It has reduced hair fall so drastically in wash day.
Do you drink it? Sorry these days anything goes on your hair 👀
Yes love your tips, I finger detangle, use propoo and it made a difference in hair fall and breakage when I wash my hair. Today is wash day so thank you for your video 😊💕
Yayy wash day! 😆 And you’re so welcome!
@@CurlyChemistry🤗
I apply shampoo (not too much) in my hair stands because I use hair grease. Sulfate shampoo and acv are the only way I found to break down the grease on my hair to be able to moisturize my hair again
I allow my shampoo to stay on my hair for a minute or two before washing; it defines my curls like crazy!
My tip is doing an olaplex 3 treatment once every two weeks.
Using satin or silk hair ties for my stretch out method to gain more use of my wash day style/curls.
Pre-pooing my hair before shampooing and deep conditioning made a big difference in my hair.
Love the shirt Tonya! Thank you for constantly dropping your gems on us honey!!
You're so welcome!! :-)
All I can say is God I love your channel. I LIVE by this advice. THX
Thank you Traci!! :-)
I love your videos 🥰. Prepoo has made a world of difference. How long do you recommend prepooing with oil?
Thank you!! I usually prepoo for at least an hour or overnight.
@@CurlyChemistry Thank you for responding.
I always pre poo my hair before my wash day. Love this! And every other day I do my oils mixture in my LOC method.
Your hair tho😍😍. I need this protective style in my life.
Thank you for this content. Prepooing has made a difference for me.
You're welcome!
I comb hair 1st then put in loose scrunch. Then wet, put condit thru middle length/ends. Then put s.poo in. Rinse. Then take scrunch out and rinse again. No tangles!
Jbco is my routine as a prepoo sometimes as a leave in sometimes after gel... It depends on the mood but always in my routine👍👍
Finger detangling my hair has done wonders! .. thank you for these tips💕
Thanks for the video. I always find useful tips from your videos. The PMP method is helping me greatly with my extremely dry, high porosity hair! It's been a real game changer for me. Thank you!!!
Yay! So happy to hear that Erisa! :-)
Love your channel, very informative. Could you talk about the max hydration method, the science behind it and whether or not it works?
Everytime i watch your content i always learn something new..had no idea i can use murumuru butter to pre-poo my hair..good to know
You’re welcome!! ☺️
use conditioner (with extra slip) to finger detangle, since the hair is fine/thin don't need much of it
Wash day is today! I definitely needed to watch this!!
Pre-pooing (I use olive oil) def made a huge difference, wayyy more of a difference than deep conditioner. Pre-poo is def a must for moisture retention for me.
Great video, thanks!
What kind do you use? Like organic, cold pressed, extra virgin, harvested from a small family owned farm in Italy? Or just the Walmart kind
Lol sorry that was unnecessary, my hair hates coconut oil so I am looking at olive oil but apparently you gotta get the right kind
@@itsmidtrib1569 extra virgin works fine for me
