I love the stories behind the filming of this movie. The chief laughing after the kiss on his head was unscripted. The reaction shots of Mark Frazer making funny faces was just the director going to him and telling him to make reaction faces. Matt Hannon cut his hair when he thought filming was done, but the director needed him to film some ""pick up"" shots, and absolutely lost it. That's why his hair goes back and forth from being natural to being a wig. The scene where Hannon fights, and extends his pinkies and pointer fingers, he admits he was so annoyed with the filming that he just did that.

Samurai Cop and The Room are amazing because the directors thought they were making "art". As soon as they became self aware they sucked. Which is why Samurai Cop 2 blows a chimp... the "bad movie" is only fun when its sincere.

Matt told me that Tommy (who had never seen the first SC), put it to him and the director that he should win the final fight and become the Samurai Cop. I believe they actually filmed it (or pretended to) to shut Tommy up, but, of course, they never used it. Blows my mind as I'm writing this to think I'm actually friends with both Matt and Greg Sestero.

Just when I thought this reaction couldn't get any better... WIGS! I'm actually friends with Matt Hannon. Here are a few titbits:
    1) Almost two years passed, during which Matt cut his hair.
    2) Matthew, as to what Matt is on, when I met him in Spain, we had to ship him over very precise dietary requirements. He keeps a really strict regimen.
    3) Matt was actually traumatised when the film became notorious. He hadn't even told friends or family it existed. And when he heard of the other Hannon's death, he changed his name to Mathew Karedas. He finally understood the love at our Festival in Spain, where I met him, and now he often takes the movie on tour and makes jokes Rifftrax style over the movie itself.
    4) He was previously a bodyguard, for Tom Hanks, Arnie, and, to a much greater extent, Sly. He thought it stupid to play a Samurai, as his fighting technique was to end the fight ASAP with as few moves as possible. But, as he said to me, "I got to be an action hero without having to blow anybody. Not many actors can say that".
    5) One day, he was looking out for Sly while in Sly's backyard. Sly sat down at a table and asked Matt to join him. Sly started writing in a pad, and, 8 hours later, he finished the first draft for Rocky V. Matt was the first person to read it.
    6) On our last night hanging out before he went back to LA (our encounters since have been on the phone), he told me the story of what happened to him after shooting. I was doubled over and could hardly breathe from laughing so hard. I have been pestering him to let me adapt the story into a script, so watch this space.

Have you folks ever played an RPG called "It Came From the Late, Late Show?" It's an RPG where you, as the players, play actors in a bad, C-level movie like Samurai Cop, or Plan 9 From Outer Space. Please find it. Play it. You will absolutely love it, if you've never played it before.
Anyway, we made a sequel to Samurai Cop, before there was a real Samurai Cop 2. I do not think we could've possibly made the dialogue worse than it was in this movie, or its actual sequel. And we tried. The chief still couldn't get the big club out of his ass, no matter how much we tried to get it out of there. We also had Ninja Cops and Space Cops in our group. It was amazing.

This film is a rare treat. It almost defies explanation. Often, it seems like a throwback to a decade or two earlier - even though it was made in 91. It's honestly hard for me to guess what the director/producer was really going for with the film. It seems like general incompetence all around. The insight from the RLM interview REALLY helps explain a lot. It is HIGHLY recommended. It's definitely not Remo Williams, but it has some charm to it - perhaps more charm than the previously mentioned Breen movies. I can't tell if the Breen films are trying to be clever and self aware, and I'm not sure if they'd gain or lose points, if they were. However, I like the intensity and the earnestness of Samurai Cop. It seems to be completely unaware that it's headed towards disaster, so it keeps going full throttle to its destination.
I want to mention that there was a sequel to this film, and while the first one was totally unaware, the sequel is completely self aware. It knows what the audience wants, and what its supposed to be, and it leans into absurdity. While, it's not written entirely as a comedy, like Naked Gun, it's self satirical. Somehow, it manages to pull it off and know its limitations better than any of the 2000's National Lampoon style X-Movie productions. It even ends up being more like The Room, for reasons that eventually become obvious. I hope you guys cover that one. I will be there, if you do.

The police chief actor is trying his best to actually act... Thank god for him. He is apparently the only real actor in this movie.
The wig is because for some reason he cut his hair in between filming, so they had to use a wig for the rest of the scenes.
Best thing about this movie was his freaking hair, and he cut it in the middle of filming! I think it was because they ran out of budget in the middle of filming, and then resumed filming two years later at which point he had cut his hair (why????!!!!) and then they filmed the rest of the scenes with him wearing a horrific wig! "No one will notice!!" lmao!

You two should watch the movie Rubber (2010) and Joe's Apartment (1996).

Emily needs to get a gander at Robert Z'Dar without the beard.....'cause I have a feeling she thought the beard was what made his face shaped like that.

Really enjoyed Emily's reaction to Samurai Cop. It's so amazing how a movie this bad can circle around to being good again.😂

I had a movie that probably isn't on your radar, wonder if Matthew watched it when he was younger. Disorderlies starring The Fat Boys. It was a guilty pleasure flick of mine.
