    One of the scenes that unexpectedly tugs at me is when Maggie saves food from her diner customers. I've had to do that in college and again in 2009 when the economy went bad. --------- I thought it was such great writing to show that Maggie had deep poverty, but she had belief and determination. --------- I cry everytime. Great reaction by Sam and Daniel.

    The crazy thing is Frankie didn’t want to take his original fighter to the championship fight because he wanted to protect him. He gave in and took Maggie to the championship fight, and she lost her life. He must’ve felt horrible. But that’s what she wanted. That is what fulfilled her life. Such a great movie.

    Probably one of the key features to this movie being such a success was that no one had divulged the gut punch twist that occurs towards the end of the movie, taking it in a whole new direction. People were going to see what they thought was a female boxing movie, and coming out overwhelmed by having seen a searing account of euthanasia.

    Maggie's story is like a twist on the classic Cinderella tale. Her good father dies, leaving her at the mercy of her dishonorable family, who try to keep her miserable. Frankie is her prince all throughout the film, and her boxing gloves are her slippers - her opportunity for happiness. Maggie's mother wants her to get married, but not to be happy. She wants her own daughter to be as miserable as she is. Don't be great, just marry a man and live in mediocrity.
    Only a cruel twist in the story destroyed Maggie's dream, but her prince still saved her at the end...but not in the way that we expected.

    I resonate so deeply with Maggie's struggle to become better without proper training. ---------- The scene when Maggie is training solo on her birthday cause she has nothing else good in her life. --------- So much of the practice moments in life are in lonely gyms and soccer fields when no one is looking. Getting good at something is such a lonely pursuit.

    Fun Fact: The actor who played "The Blue Bear" was a real boxer. While she's tough as nails, she's actually really nice in person. She experienced a bit of depression when people started harassing her on the streets, confusing her for the character she portrayed in this movie. They'd yell horrible things to her on the streets, and sadly she became something of a recluse. Similar to Jack Gleason and his portrayal of Joffrey in Game of Thrones.

    • @Bensonders
      @Bensonders 2 дня назад +8

      Its so crazy and very scary that people can't separate the actor from the character!
      I mean sure, I had trouble with this topic, too, when we had to read Ghoete in school and some of his work contained too many parallels to his real life. But that was exactly the moment were we got taught to separate the art from the artist!

    The writing in this movie is so subtle and next level, it takes this movie to that God-tier level. ----- When Willie leaves Frankie, he says, “You taught, me everything I need to know”. ---- The talks with Morgan Freeman reflecting on past failures. ---- The story of Maggie and her dads dog ‘Axel’, getting Frankie to pull the plug. ----- Amazing writing to let the dialogue guide us through the present by reflecting on the past. ---- This is the reason I watch amazing movies. Clint Eastwood never fails.

    Unfortunately, Hilary Swank does not have many good movies to her name. If you had told me back in the 90s that Hilary would win Best Actress TWICE, I simply wouldn't have believed you. Prior to "Boys Don't Cry" and this, I only knew her from "Next Karate Kid" and a guest-star part on "Beverly Hills 90210". Now "Boys Don't Cry" is even more rough that M$B, as far as I'm concerned. See it if you want, but the one I'd recommend is Christopher Nolan's "Insomnia" with Al Pacino and Robin Williams. Two good movies in which she plays supporting parts are "The Gift" and "The Hunt" where she has an incredible fight scene.

    You guys asked a question about Billie the blue bear. Here’s how it would’ve went down. Boxers sign, a waiver so they cannot be charged with wrongdoing. However, the blue bear hit her after the bell went and from behind. This is what they consider an illegal punch known as a rabbit punch. Therefore, the waiver, you sign would not protect you from prosecution and criminal negligence. She would’ve definitely faced criminal charges. The boxing Federation would’ve also stripped her of her title and giving her a lifetime band. She would never box again, professionally.

    Clint Eastwood has had such a long career with so many great movies. One of my favorites which scared me as a kid is Play Misty For Me. Hillary Swank is a great actress Million Dollar Baby and Boys Don't Cry are 2 of her best known but she has been in more than 30 movies.

    The Actress who played "The Blue Bear" is the great Lucia Rijker out of the Netherlands. She's probably the best female fighter we've ever seen and by all accounts a sweet person. I watched her fight many years ago and her Wiki page is just fascinating! "P.S., I Love You" and the best on a true story "Boys Don't Cry", a very good.

    Clint is such an amazing director. I watched this movie several times in the theater. One of those times I sat in the back row and realized that during some of the scenes in the hospital, I could hear the projector running. I realized that there was absolutely no sound and pretty much nothing happening on the screen. It felt like Clint respected the viewer enough to allow the viewer time to think and feel.
    There were no good choices and I don’t think anybody can know what they would do unless they were in that situation.
    I saw this advertised as coming up and I knew that it would destroy you but that you would be glad that you watched it.
