- Tokyo Xanadu was an action RPG that first released for the Vita in Japan in 2015. It got a worldwide release in 2017 and an 'eX+MNT:' edition followed for the Playstation 4 later that year. It is now releasing on the Nintendo Switch, but is it worth getting? Well, let's find out....

I love a lot of story 😅 This looks awesome 👌
I have been waiting for a Switch version of this game for AGES let's go!!! Now get me some more Xanadu games Falcom!
Its a good year to be a Falcom fan. ❤
Yeah they are doing well for sure! Mark
Now I’m just waiting for the og legend of heroes to come to switch😭
Atlus to
Sure is, well excited for Nordics in a few months. So hoping Trails 1 & 2 get a UK release also.
Fine, I'll buy it again. This is an underrated RPG gem .
I've already have this game for the PS4. This was my first Falcom game. I played it during the lockdown, and I was fascinated by it. Thanks to that game, I got drawn in to playimg the Trails series.
I’ve never played any falcom games but I’m OBSESSED with the soundtracks, I think the ost for this game is awesome, the song Hazy Moon especially is so addicting to me
The legend of heroes team knocked this one out of the park :) their attention to npc's individual storylines that progress as the story does is incredible as always, if you pay attention to all that. Again, the more you put in, the more you get out ^^
(Cool note: if you played any of the trails of cold steel series, Towa is carbon copied, recasted character. personality, name, design and all. Super charming easter egg)
I thought i recognized her, but i wasnt sure. 😆@CupOfNoodlesMusic
So good i bought it twice 😅 too excited to play it on switch!✌️
the fact that it's 60fps proves that falcom was actually serious about making this available on switch. In case you didn't know, cold steel 1 and 2 were ported on switch in asia for china, korea and japan by a port studio called clouded leopard. I like to call them clowned leopard because they are notorious for being a bad port studio, so much so that the very same engine that powers CS 1-2 which is 60fps here, was a 30fps with lag because of them. And their PC port of YS X was so broken, it was delisted from steam.
I have no idea why falcom still allows these clowns to do ports for them but hey, it's not my money. At least, falcom now handles the switch ports themselves and daybreak was a massive improvement over reverie in term of port quality.
Anyways, great review as usual!
Hey guys! Your channel is always a go-to for me, especially when it comes to these reviews! The honesty is always appreciated. This is a game I want to like and having watched the review I can see it'll take some getting used to (especially loving Ys VIII) but it looks like it'll be worth the time. This could very well be a Xanamaybe. Cheers chaps
This game is not without its blemishes, but man is it great. Must play for anyone slightly curious, and a great first Falcom game as it sits in the middle-ground between Ys and Trails gameplay-wise!
too much talking would turn lots off
@@kidrobot.The Trails series have some of the longest scripts in gaming, so it still fits as the middle of the road.
i much prefer a "dated" look that has smooth processing, than a higher fidelity with framerate drops and pop-in.
This "dated" look is a sweetspot for me. Functionality meets art, where it's pleasant in appearance with an art style that fills the gaps and it doesn't overcompensate.
Having a lot of story and watching characters talk is a huge plus for me, I loved that from the other Trails of games I played. Man I’m definitely getting this, this week.
Nice review! I still have this game on my Vita 😊
Xanadon’t 🥸. I have no words. 😂
Probably going to get this since it has reportedly better localization. Glad to hear the performance is solid too. Thanks for the review.
yeah a new english script needs to be the highlight of the review here
@@JeskidoYT Sweet. I have the PS4 in my backlog. Sounds like Switch version is the way to go unless they patch the PS4 version. Thanks!
Lots of story, when it's well-told, adds depth and emotional weight to a game. And this really is a well-told story, because of how everything is so carefully layered together.
It all starts out seeming disjointed and episodic, but by the time the reveals really start kicking in, you realize that not only was this the best way they could have told it, it was the ONLY way they could have told it.
A sequel has been announced, as well.
Yeah, like I said - it will be a deal breaker for some and a selling point for others. As long as people know what they're buying.
Well great..now I want it.
I’m on octopath 2 at the moment, so I’ll stick with it. Thank you for the review, I was considering this game.
Great review as always guys!
Thanks mate!
Been waiting for this to drop for so long. Absolutely fell in love with it. Hidden gem 💎
Added this to my backlog. I had it on the Vita when I started my Falcom journey so I’m happy to be able to play the updated Ex + version.
I’m so glad I saw a review for this game before I bought it. Because now I can get this game without regrets.
Yea i'll pick this up physically but not too sure when i'll have time to play it 😅. So many good games to play!!
Facts!
Played on the Vita a while ago and absolutely loved it!! Never got round to finishing it 100% I was at around 65% so definitely looking forward to this on the switch.. This is Dusk Diver meets Ys!!! 😁👍🏽
Ohhhhh right up my alley. Yes please 😍😍
Definitely!
I'm just happy it sounds like it runs really well on the switch
I love the consistency you guys have I watch a lot of your videos before I think about getting a game Thanks 👌🏾💯
I love this game so much. I played it for the first time on the ps4, way before I played The Legend of Heroes games and fell inlove with it. Definitely worth it if you enjoy action jrpgs with relationships/school sim mix. The story is great and so are most of the characters.
It's also been rumoured they are finally making a new Tokyo Xanadu game but not sure if it will be a sequal or a whole new thing.
Great review! This looks right up my alley.
What I like about this game is that the characters don't orbit around the mc and have their own relationship.
Although this can be deal-breaker since some of the girls aren't really "romanceable"
Not during my play thru… all the girls wanted me
@@drowningin pretty sure the "S link" with Sora and Mitsuki are strictly friendship, compared to Asuka and Rion where those two are in love with Kou.
@@thieftheodore nah they just didn’t fk with you. I’m a chad
Loved this game on Vita, definitely going to pick it up for my Switch.
I played a bit of this years ago and it was fine. At a time when I have some excellent games on the go 'fine' isn't enough to tempt me.
But glad others who appreciate this type of game are excited to experience it
I played on the ps4 and loved it. Never finished it though, looking forward to this.
I remember this one, indeed its a bit like persona series, wel except the combat system but it feels a lot like this, thanks for reviewing the Switch version
The physical edition comes out next month, but DOES come with a full 4CD soundtrack if anyone’s interested. You have to order from the distributor themselves.
Looks fun. I like a good amount of story.
Kinda wish they would have swung for an english voice cast for this re-release, just to give those that want it an option and someone like me who's returning something new, but either way glad others get experience this neat little game.
And how would they handle the one part where a character reads or speaks in English if they are speaking in English already? Does that even make sense? It works for them to speak English in that part when they were speaking in Japanese most of the time. Just be glad the text is in English for our benefit.
@whitewolf3051 I mean it's not that hard of a thing to get around. Dubs do it all the time
I'm just saying it would have been cool feature for what is the 3rd release of this game.
@@whitewolf3051 In Persona 5, the characters complain about not being able to read English within the English dub. It basically serves as an auditory translation and can be done in a way that makes sense. If Persona 5 can do it, there's no excuse for other dev teams to not offer a dub option.
English dub is garbage anyways. Only game that did a good job on this was SMT IV lol
@@tiredcat1485 Play Xenoblade Chronicles. It has one of the best JRPG dubs of all time. And having the option for English voices is still nice. No one's forcing you to use it.
I have this on steam and Vita so I will definatly be picking this up for the switch.
It always blows my mind when someone plays an rpg or narrative driven game and then complains about having too much story.
I really enjoyed the Vita version. Im ready to play it again and will be getting the Switch version for the added content.
nice to hear this sounds like a good port since falcom games can be hit or miss when it comes to that on switch. remember really enjoying this back on vita so looking forward to picking it up.
Played it years ago on PC, loved it, and it led me to Xanadu Next-another Falcom title with which it shares exactly two things: both are masterpieces, and neither has anything to do with the main Xanaxu series. Or each other.
I mean, in terms of gameplay, setting, art style, time period or even genre they've nothing to do with any other. It's as if Dragon Quest, Diablo and Persona were all sold under the same brand.
I have this for my Steam Deck backlog but it's looking really good on Switch as well.
Falcon strikes again. May have to pick this one up for the backlog
Appreciate the information For me knowing there's no English dub acting, I'll be out My reading's not good enough to keep up with the game. It moves that quick sanks for letting us know in your review
Hi again. Just wanted to ask a quick question. I just got Tokyo Xanadu for Christmas yesterday. And I put the game on Easy. And it said that I would enjoy the story or whatever. Does that mean I don’t do any fighting in the game?
Currently playing Trails Through Daybreak and I'm kinda interested in this but I also have Ys X on pre-order and the next Trails game on Pre-order too.
I played it on the Vita not too long a go, and quite enjoyed it. 7/10 sounds about right. Doesn't really do anything special, nor is it particularly challenging, but it does a good job with what's there. That said, it is known for having a bad English translation. I even spotted a few spelling mistakes. According to Steam reviews, this didn't get fixed in the eX+ version.
I love when jrpg are action base!! Yaaay!!!❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉😊
Gunna pick this up! Not played any of their other games which I know I need to try
Not my market but glad its well received. Thanks SwitchUp!
I have a STRONG feeling that this one will be a RARE physical release... I have 4 Best Buy's in my city and they only got 6 copies between all of them...
2 days can't come soon enough, can't wait anymore
Definitely gonna pick this one up, but not anytime soon, I'm still pre-occupied with Daybreak and also to not burned out myself since falcom titles can be quite text heavy.
I’m here for the top tier dad jokes. Well done.
This game is like comfort food for me
Did I zone out, or did you skip mentioning the entirely new English localization? That really is the biggest deal here, and it's amazing they went through the trouble to do it for this release!
I got excited cos thought I would have received my copy already as it released on 25th. Then I realised that was digital release and I have to wait another week or so for my physical copy 😭😭
All Falcom games are very dialog heavy, but the characters are good so it's cool.
Man if I hadn't already known this was by Falcom I woulda been like "Wait a minute...". From what I can see this is Trails of Cold Steel but with the combat from Ys.
Been on my wishlist for years and just never got around to pulling the trigger on it. Might have to do so now.
This is a great game, probably gonna buy it again just for not having the word chortle in it
I love the look of this game! Can you invert x and y camera?
yet another to add to the wishlist!
I was thinking about it, but I will most likely get in on Pc
Really like Falcoms take on a persona like game
Dis game play like Ys I'm all for it 😏😏
Nice treat before YS X!
I played this when it was released on the Vita. Got it because I really enjoyed Trails of Cold Steel on my Vita and it was from the devs but it also reminded me of Persona especially the school setting and the bond/romance feature like Cold Steel which is why I got it.
Also doubled dipped on the ex+ on PS4 and Steam (when it was on sale). Don’t know if it’s worth getting it again on Switch since I’m already playing it on a handheld PC like the ROG Ally.
Falcom is amazing
Imported the 2015 Japanese Vita version, then bought the 2017 localized Vita version, and now will be getting it for the Switch.
Also, if you have a problem with the characters talking too much, maybe (any kind of) role playing isn’t for you. It may be an action role playing game, but it’s still a role playing game, and rpgs are story driven, with characters talking. If you don’t want characters talking, just get a pure action game.
Might be worth noting that JRPGs tend to be far more story heavy than something like a Western RPG so if someone is more used to the later then suddenly diving into one of the former can definitely be a bit jarring.
nah, they can play jrps and skip this
To be honest too many new games these days have a massive lack of a good story and that’s why I prefer rpg’s over anything else
I was wating for a discount on ps5 (I'm not gonna pay $70+ usd for an old game). Thank god a switch version is coming, 60 fps, handheld and for $47usd on my country. Big W
Xanadu, can't hear it without the accompanying Olivia Newton-John song playing in my head lol.😅
Finished it on the PS4 just a few months ago. so I won't be getting it again. But it is worth it for those who missed it before.
I don’t mind long cut scenes but sometimes I just need to save so I can put it down lol
Okay I'll add it to the backlog
Was interested in this from the upcoming games video, so def glad to see a review
So many good games on the switch this year + upcoming ! Have you guys heard of the game "Torn Away"? Just bought it to play for a trip later and would love to hear your opinions on it ^^
is this actually coming out on the 25th? majority of online retailers are listed as august 9th for physical at least in the uk
Im from Puerto Rico and had it pre-ordered from a mom/pop store and my copy arrived yesterday (7/25).
@@xavito4337 its been delayed in europe to august the 9th.
Had it just come earlier...
But Reynatis is my game
I just recently beaten the ex+ version on pc and I had an amazing time with it but the quality of the english translation is not so good in some parts and it was more noticeable around the near end of the game.
**chortle** But this new relocalization makes me curious enough to replay it again just to see what changes they made to it, the people who worked relocalizing it claims that it was much more better quality now so lets see...
edit: fixed the markdown
Im sure I'll rebuy it. Played it on vita years ago and beat it. Remember it being an OK game
Yeah, it's pretty decent!
I've always wanted to try a game like this but I'm just so bad at finishing longer games that it has never seem worth it.
The school looks like Yasogami High
It's going to be a xanado from me!
Wait, isn't there already a Ex+ version out for the switch ? Is it the western release ?
I didn't see that pun coming 💀
This is another one for the Wishlist. Does it have even more dialogue and cut scenes than, say, Xenoblade Chronicles 3? Just wondering.
Ps vita days 🤩
I played the original years ago on the Vita, and was on th fence about getting it again.
Got it on the Vita, the only Play Station console I have, twice. Imported the 2015 Japanese version, then got the 2017 localized version. Will be getting this one for the Switch, so I’ll be triple dipping.
I promise I'm an adult, but heehee that results screen said ass. Will wait for a price drop on this, it's one I've seen for years on PS4 but never quite convinced myself to give it a buy.
I know you said that you haven't played the previous releases but can you tell us something about the updated localization?
The old one had frequent cringeworthy translations such as "right in hte feels", "fukkleducks" and all the frequent "chortles" whenever a character began dialogue with a chuckle.
This game is for me and I wanna support Falcom, but at the same time I don't want to support meme localizations...
I had nothing that sounds as ridiculous as that so I'm assuming they've improved the translation for this version.
@@SwitchUpYt Thanks for the response, I'll wait for more info to drop after the official release.
Maybe on a sale. It seems cool and I like the story premise but I know JRPG’s and that a lot of time going into so much bland world design. I’ll pick it up on a sale. 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
How does this Switch version compares to the PS4 version?
Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick and Tich...
(one for the OLDER viewers there!)
Can you review easy red 2?
Are they doing an esrb physical for this?
To my knowledge yes as I pre ordered a physical copy on Amazon
Tried this on my playstation and couldnt get into it. Maybe with the switch port now i can give it another go
It came out on PC too, why console people act like PC don''t exist, I play this on my Steam Deck, it's on sale every other week for £3.50 and they are charging Switch users £50 LOOOL
this is def the best persona like title since it did its own thing by being an ARPG instead of being a direct clone thats worse
Falcom is never going to write adult protagonists in these adventures are they? It's always going to be schoolkids balancing school and adventure. Seems like hell will freeze over by the time Japan comes out with a modern day action-JRPG where you balance office life, a dating scene, paying bills & taxes, and going on fantastic battling adventures, with an all-adult main cast.
Get over it. And they have plenty of games with Adult protagonists. They don’t make games to cater to westerners.
The newest Trails game has an adult protagonist and it isn’t in a high school setting. Also in many of the Ys games Adol is an adult and it’s never been in a school setting either.
@@eastcoasttone3952 that's a little reassuring to know.
