    I played this game on PS4 and wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. Just like in Persona, spending my last free day roaming around Morimiya was an emotional gaming moment for me. Clearing up remaining sidequests, speccing out my party with the best builds in preparation for the final boss and saying goodbye to the town and all its lovely residents.

      It's because the localizers are Aksys, not NISA. They're a smaller company for the most part and didn't bother dubbing either the Vita version (horrible translation too by them) or PS4 version (better than the Vita translation, at least everything was readable unlike some of the Vita's being a garbled mess, but it was still meh for the most part). This version apparently has another reworked translation brining in some people that worked on the NISA or Geofront (forget which of the two it was tbh...probably the Geofront team though) Trails releases (so if those are fine with you it'll hopefully be good).
      So chances are the Switch port version will be the west translation wise but as far as I know Aksys hasn't really dubbed anything they work on since before Blaze Blue Central Fiction (which they only did sub as well which honestly ticked me off as I played the previous games in English so it's very jarring going to a different language afterwards...not to mention the eng VAs did a good job with it imo) which was also the last time Arc System Works (developer of BB) worked with them on the series/any other project they worked on to my knowledge...their (Aksys) translations as a whole for all their games took a hit around that time as well so either they started missing stuff they noticed when doing dub work as saying stuff out loud makes mistakes much easier to catch or they lost some of their good talent and were left with mediocre talent (oh and let me clarify this as well since this is somewhat related to Trails: the same can be said about Xseed as well. Since after the Trails and Ys series moved to NISA Xseed's last good translation was Akiba's Beat imo and all after were sub par since (a shadow of the Trails in the Sky/Cold Steel 1 and 2 days) and a lot of that may have been due to some translators/editors leaving due to Akiba's Beat/Xseed wanting to skimp out on quality to get the games out faster but they refused to give up a thorough review of the games. I mention this cause I still know people say they want it given back to Xseed as they don't like NISA's translations but Xseed will probably do as bad a job if not worse nowadays and take 2 times longer at best...NISA at least has the manpower to get the series out on a timely basis and their translations are at least somewhat decent (granted Daybreak did have some BS woke moment at chapter 4 when they just had to give Van a stupid line: 'what pronouns do you use' to a character sometime in that chapter which was moronic...hell even though it's obvious by the animation reaction he was asking about the sex of the character (either cause he wasn't sure or as a joke) a better line would've been 'are you a boy or a girl' instead as nothing said/seen then indicated asking someone for their pronoun (that would suggest asking what you identify as rather than asking what you are by looking at them...and that was only asked due to the character being young enough to pass either way and the clothing worn being something either sex would wear...nothing about their mannerisms, speech patterns, etc justified asking for the pronoun rather than sex)).

    I really love this game, and I am happy this game comes to another platform too! Of course this all happens because they are working on a Tokyo Xanadu 2. If they can interest people for the first game, they have generated potential buyers for the sequel. It would be not that bad if it turns into a complete series. Maybe not as big as Ys or the Trails series, but there is a lot of potential. The first game always felt like a set-up for a much, much bigger story. A bit like the first Cold Steel or Trails In The Sky game where a set-up for a much greater story.
    And also VERY important! I hope the improved translation/localization will be patched into the PC (GOG or Steam) version too. I was already on the brink of doing a re-play of this game and I would VERY much appreciate it if I can play this game with an improved localization!! As I said in other threads here, it would be not that hard to patch it in.

    • @ifrit1937
      @ifrit1937 Месяц назад

      Well biggest improvement that Falcom can make is NOT give this to Aksys when it's time the localize the game (they're the ones that did TX 1)...their best bet will probably be NISA again as they'll get the usual localizers they've been using and have NISA's money behind it for a dub as well (Aksys didn't have one due to being a smaller company...NISA doesn't have that going for them for better or worse so they can't really make an excuse for no dub with TX2 if they get it given all the Falcom games they've done except Crossbell have had dubs and that was likely only done due to most of the dialogue being unvoiced to begin with (this is based off the original Crossbell PC games, not full voiced Vita versions) and only the combat really had voices in it (granted they could've dubbed that if they wanted to but what's really the point for so few lines? It'd be a waste of money imo)). TX2 however will be a new game, new engine (well in comparison to TX 1 anyway...will probably be the Kuro/Ys X engine), pretty much new everything so not voicing as much as possible/the budget allows and dubbing that now that Falcom game's are getting a bit more limelight would be foolish as there are tons of people out there that may be interested in the game but say no if there's no Dub (my bro's one of them for one example).
      And before you say give it to Xseed...let me be blunt Xseed's a former shell of their old selves and their translations are at best on par with NISA nowadays and usually worse (probably cause a lot of the talent that did YS/Trails in Xseed left due to the company trying to rush out the projects faster than they wanted and compromised the translations and so those talents either moved over to NISA to do it or other places).

    • @jclosed2516
      @jclosed2516 Месяц назад

      @@ifrit1937 Well - First of all - The improved localization is already finished and done, so the only thing they have to do is port it to the PC (and maybe other platforms). This is simply a technical software thing, so no translator or localizator is involved at all.
      For Tokyo Xanadu 2 we will get what we get. Whatever we say as fanbase will never change the decisions the publisher and/or Falcom takes. You can anticipate and get angry and start shouting and have some "gnashing of teeth" for the translating/localizating company involved, but it won't change a thing. We get what we get.
      I personally am glad with all the translations we got so far. Are they perfect? No, but no localization will ever be perfect, because what one person thinks it's a perfect translation, the other will fiercely disagree with. I am in the middle.
      As long as we do not get a literal translation or a machine-translation. And as long as the translators/localizators can catch the overall feeling and broad meaning behind situations and story, I am fine with that.

      @ifrit1937 Месяц назад

      Well it's better than the Vita version (a garbled mess) but nowhere close to Xseed when Xseed was good (they're meh nowadays imo with their translations...I think they lost too many of their good talent when they pissed off some of their editors who left for being rushed with the Akiba's beat localization as well as losing the Trails/Ys series as Xseed wanted them to translate them much faster even if it meant compromising the translation a bit which the editors didnt' want to do...some even went to NISA when NISA got the translations to help the translation as much as possible there (into the best but it probably would've been worse without them and anything done by Xseed now will be worse than what NISA does now)).
      All I really know about this version is either some members of NISA or Geofront (probably the later) helped with this new TX translation so it should be better than the first 2 on Vita and PS4 so you should assume it's at least on par with Ys 8 at worse (first NiSA Falcom translation if I'm right)...well not sure if it'll be before patch Ys 8 or after patch Ys 8 (I only played it pre patch...it was mostly fine imo and some re-translated words after the patch were worse imo (if I'm right they reworked ancient species into Suarians or something like it...I don't like the new word lol)...and hell even the 'Big Hole' translation was at least funny and still technically spot on with its description lol).
      If anything should be a factor in if you buy it again I'd say it should be if you want to play the game stationary on a home console or would prefer to play it in handheld mode lounging on the couch/in bed or something...that'd be, imo, the biggest reason to buy the game again for me (which would be the 3rd time lol, got it on Vita (sucked due to translation), got it on PS4 (new content was great and playing it handheld on Switch could be cool and the translation was passable unlike the Vita version), didn't get it on Steam though due to having the PS4 version so if I buy it again it'd be to get the new content and better translation on a handheld option...granted right now cash it tight though so not sure I can justify buying it on release)). Visuals probably won't be much different between the two so the only other real thing to look at/research would be if it has any switch specific performance issues (for example Namco's latest Tales of Symphonia Remastered version on PS4/5, Xbox 1/Series, and Switch had performance issues that ONLY occurred on the Switch that caused constant frame drops in some areas and crashes while the other versions or older versions played better). Only other thing to consider would be the controller I guess and if you don't find the Switch controller or joycons (in and outside of handheld mode) comfortable or not (or more likely than not having stick drift on the Joycons will also be a big or at least annoying issue if your joycons have it).

      Yea. Came out on Vita originally (translation there was horrible though...they probably got the rights to the PS4 version midway and decided there's not enough people here to warrant doing the job right and half assed it midway through...definitely probably happened as it was fine for about 3 chapters before it become bad).
      Then after that the PS4 and PC versions release which have additional content that's NOT in the Vita version (so of all versions released it has been the better choice to go with...also more accessible than the Vita version for most people also helps). The translation is a vast improvement over the Vita version but even then I'd say the translation was still meh/stiff and could've been quite a bit better if given to a better localizer.
      The Switch version will be based on the EX+ version like the PS4/PC version but the translation was worked on again from what I've heard and should be better than even the PS4 version (hopefully) so in that regard it'd be the best version to get.
      None have dub however so it will be Eng sub only (Aksys (the localizer for TX) barely does dubs anymore to my knowledge...probably don't want to shell out the extra cash for it even though going sub only will probably lose them/lost past versions sales they may have got with a dub).

    Bought and beat the game 2x so far: once on Vita (and yes the translation there is beyond ass...worse than almost any other I've played even Sword Art Online Hollowed Fragment (well technically that one's worse grammatically if I'm gonna be honest and an even more garbled mess but some of what they translated was hilarious...TX Vita wasn't funny at all with it's translation). The PS4 EX+ version improved it quite a bit so everything was now understandable/no longer garbled but it was still fairly meh/stiff and could've been a lot better...which may be the only reason i'd consider dipping in for a 3rd time (granted...cash is tight now so not sure if I can justify buying now...maybe later though like for Christmas or sometime after I get a better paying job since I'm on the look for one now anyway (granted one goal with that is also a new PC as this one's nearing 10 years old now)).
    But hell I liked it so much it ALMOST took my favorite game of all time which Tales of Symphonia has had for the last nearly 20 years now due to how well the story's written/laid out (story subject matter may not be the best but as far as the rules of writing go TX and Symphonia as well as say Valkyria Chronicles, Dragon Quest 8 and 11, Tales of the Abyss (granted the 3rd act may have felt a bit too tacked on to expand the story's length than it may have needed to be as that 3rd act was mostly a rehash of act 2 imo with only a handful new plot points that could've been dropped in act 2 if they wanted to), and the Trails series when taken as a whole and not just each game or arc by themselves (Trails as a whole is easily the best writing in video games at the moment if not ever imo as all games plotline flow into each other naturally due to the setup each previous game provides...if looked at alone each game's weaker of course, same for each act (granted you can start on say Zero or Cold Steel 1 or Sky 1 if you want but definitely not any game with 2 or 3 or Azure/Revirie as all of those more or less need the previous game to understand who the characters are and what events occurred to lead to that point in the story/how they got together...if you start with a later entry it'd be like starting with Harry Potter 2 instead of 1. As for Daybreaka nd why I don't list it as a good starting point it'd be because it has far too many references/characters coming back from previous games that I can't in good faith recommend it first even if it is the newest game and getting more sales close to release would help the series future...you can I guess but there will be a lot of things said that will lead you to question 'what are they talking about?' in the game)).
    But going back to TX I'd say it was the perfect blend of Ys combat (specifically Ys combat from Origin/Felghana/Napishtim...which tbh is my favorite system of the Ys series even if you don't get new moves you can change like you do in 7, 8, 9, and from what I've seen 10) and Trails style of storytelling. The only real issues with the game was the bad translation with Vita and somewhat meh one on PS4, a lack of a dub (may not matter to much and some people will prefer Jap dub however there are a lot of lines said mid combat/while moving that are hard to read and concentrate on the enemy, especially boss, at the same time...even if dub voices may suck in some people's opinion the advantage with them is you you hear them rather than need to read thus you can follow the story that way without getting distracted by trying to read the text...other sub only games like say Tales of Hearts R also has this issue (granted during combat what you mainly get is just characters yelling move names and the like rather than any real story dialogue...though some may be said as well in boss fights, especially the final boss as sometimes the protagonist and antagonist will mouth off their ideals/goals with one another and criticize the other for them...most of the main stuff is said via mostly static cutscenes however so it's not that much of an issue) on top of that some players will not buy games without Eng dub as well (my bro's a prime example of this), and finally the last issue would be kinda the same issue as with Trails of Cold Steel (and less so with the Crossbell games) the bonding system kinda forces romance only between the MC and the heroines and the relationships between the other guys and girl you don't choose pretty much go nowhere in that regard...it is not as bad as say Cold Steel though as they do focus a bit more on more platonic relationships between the other characters but they don't do anything like say pursue anything more between each other for the girls you don't pick...throw in even with picking the girl there's no real big romantic push with them from what I can tell (nothing as obvious as Rean with any of the girls besides Millium anyway) outside of maybe 1 girl that can be viewed as the main heroine (and let me be blunt...it's not the girl you probably think it is who's on the box art/focused on in marketing...anything more I'll avoid as I'd have to outright spoil who it is but they have major plot relevance at the end of the game (base game, not the after story added to EX+)).

    I have it on PS4 it I never finished it. It’s fine but it’s not as good as the Trails games IMO and I prefer turn based combat.

      I enjoy the Trails games but I feel weird about getting this game if it has 14 / 15 year old girls being sexualized so much. That's just .... creepy. I'm 36. Maybe if I was 16 or something.

    I beat this game right after playing the Trails in the Sky trilogy, by the same developers. The writing is shit in comparison to those games. The combat and dungeons are both really fun. If you want it for the action, make sure you play through the Ys series of games first for a more pure ARPG experience in the same vein. If you want it for the social sim elements, you should play the Legend of Heroes franchise first (Start at Trails in the Sky or you WILL have those games HUGELY SPOILED by the later ones.)

      To be fair the writers (I'm assuming you mean writing in terms of how the story is told/progresses and not the localization for now) was done by a new team they made just for this game to give some newer employees more or less practice in making a game with minimal supervision (they did get some supervision by some Trails members but most of it was supposedly up to the new team) and for what they gave it was at the very least a solid game if you remove comparing to the Trails series and comparing it to most other jrpgs out there (hell it'd beat out a lot of them tbh, even works done by long running teams in other companies). Comparing TX with Trails is like trying to compare a 3* meal with a 5* meal while most other meals out there (other jrpgs in this case) are 2* meals or worse.
      Now if we're talking localization writing as being your main issue for this comment that'd be because the localizers are completely different. Trails was done by Xseed at first and then later NISA (who also got some of the old Xseed team to work with them too) while Aksys was done by Aksys who never did any particularly good work and their translations had become notably worse at around that time when they stopped doing dubs in general (they did Blazblue for example which had fine translation until Central Fiction where they stopped dubbing the game/most games they localize...all the ones without dubs have issues from what I can tell likely due to the fact when something is said out loud it's easier to notice mistakes...granted the initial translation on Vita was so bad it looked like they took google translate and then somehow edited so ti was even worse than what the AI gave them...hell some lines on Vita didn't even pertain to what was happening or said 1 word and nothing else when it's obvious there was more said (like 1 part in the later half just has a line that says "Shio" (who was a character in the game) and nothing else even though it's obvious they're aksing him something in said line or making a statement to him).
      But ya even with the story writing in general (not talking localization at this point) the game was a few steps below where I'd prefer it to be...hell if they did a bit more there/reworked some plot aspects (not that big of a fan of the school aspect...bonding events also could've been better, granted better than Cold Steel's at least in terms of not having all the girls lust after Kou to the point the girls in CS do with Rean while leaving the other guys high and dry lol...in general TX did cahracter interactions/relations better imo than CS but not as well as other Trails games (CS is the weakest arc imo due to all the romance bonding events BS...due to that there is bascially no shot of any romantic relationship between the other main cast members guys and gals...TX in comparison only really has 1 girl that shows obvious feelings towards Kou while the others are barely hinted at with it even at max bond and feel more platonic/just friends if anything and most of their bonding events focus on back story without the romance being pushed much/if at all...they also explore relationships with the other guys and gals to ad degree too (not really romantic either but show that they get quite a bit closer to each other than say the other girls and guys of class VII in Cold Steel...romance focused bonding events was the worst thing Trails did for the series especially since how it's supposed to be handled in Kuro onwards is questionable as how is Rean supposed to interact with all the girls now as there is no canon romance but the game lets you get to a romantic relationship (Lloyd and the others in Crossbell have this issue too but he had far less options than Rean)...these games make sense in one off games or series but don't work well imo for games that are interconnected directly with different arcs focused on different main characters but bringing in old characters too)) and the translation was done well and preferably done then TX probably would be sitting in my favorite game of all time slot right now rather than Tales of Symphonia (who has had it for 20 years now)

    Did they change or remove all the frequent *CHORTLES*, random nonsensical Cthulhu references and other cringeworthy translations such as "hitting me in the feels", "fukkleducks" and all the other liberties our so-called localizers took when translating the game?
    I already know that the gameplay and story are for me and it's great that the Switch port is running well, so the loc's the only part keeping me from buying it as of right now. Thanks in advance.
