At first, I also wanted it to be more difficult, but after playing a whole lot of difficult metroidvania, I started to really appreciate a more casual and lighthearted experience where boss fights won't end up giving me a Carpal Tunnel. I still enjoy difficult games, but sometimes a change of pace is welcome.

@@IDreamofIndie And even the whimsical and tongue-in-cheek story comes in nicely as a palate cleanser after a mind violation like Baldr Sky (which I absolutely love, but its story is rather twisted and heavy).

The difficult hollow knight clone thing is old af. Prefer actual metroidvanias. Not hollow likes. Those are an instant no-buy for me.

not me, i'd prefer they added a hard mode. i cannot enjoy a game that's pathetically easy. there are so many rpgs over the years that looked like something i'd really enjoy, but when i found out there's no challenge to it at all, i completely lost interest.
many games have hard mode and very hard or nightmare mode, not sure why a lot of games, rpgs especially, refuse to add these challenging modes for those who want it.

@@Jack_80 There is a boss challenge mode with 6 difficulty stages in the game. Once you reach the Underground City, you find a room with a series of altars. By interacting with them (more unlock as you progress, btw), you can fight bosses you defeated and progressively ramp up the difficulty.

i really appreciate this review. sometimes a game has nothing wrong per se but just doesn't blow out the walls either, and that kind of game must present a unique challenge to reviewers. you guys did a great job capturing that feeling we indie fans are familiar with. this will be a wishlist for me and i'll wait for a sale :)

This summary sounds rather similar to what I remember playing of the game back when it was in early access and I look forward to playing the full version once I have more time to do so. For those curious about Tower Hunter: Erza's Trial, it is a roguevania with gameplay based in a style influenced by Dead Cells, but with some influence from Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night also thrown in, especially in the visuals and in the cosmetic items that can be collected to change Erza's appearance. For viewers who would like to learn more about that game, I will be covering it in much more detail in an upcoming IDOIG video of roguevania recommendations.

I always love the style you bring to your very fair and honest reviews. This sounds like something I'll keep on my wishlist for a sale, since one of my pet peeves is wandering aimlessly without a clear objective. Since it doesn't sound too difficult, though, I can probably look past that in this one.

I had an interest in this because I enjoy a good metroidvania and I like RPG elements in them too if they're there. So while this had my eye, I still never took the plunge and picked it up. I suppose I was waiting to see how the full game was. It feels like this could have done with a bit more time cooking, but that it's okay overall. I might wait for this to hit a deeper sale before picking it up, but it still seems decent enough for those who don't have much else in the way of Metroidvanias in their backlog. Thanks for the review..

I'm not a fan of the overly heavy dark themes in most Metroidvanias nor do I get all twitterpated by the brutal difficulty of the genre as well. That's well and good for some folk, but for me, not my cup of tea, as you were wont to quote off and on in your review. I am a *huge* Dust: An Elysian Tail fan, but that's a pretty tame Metroidvania as far as the genre is concerned but what kept me going was the combat and the story. Not to mention it wasn't all dark and brooding.
All that to say, Frontier Hunter looks to be okay when it comes to combat, but meh when it comes to story and that's kind of a no go for me. It looks pretty and the anime vibe is dope, but I'd rather just go watch an anime than be saddled with a 7/10 Metroidvania with a mediocre story.
Ah well, thanks for the review.

It's quite different actually. It's a lot heavier on combat, as it has a whole lot of actually useful special moves which can even be used as combos. You can also hot-swap between three characters like in Trine games. Also, thank goodness, it doesn't have the outdated and obnoxious collision damage. A few enemies DO have it, but they are more an exception than a rule.

as soon as i you said normal mode is really easy, i lost all interest in the game.
i know i'm not the only one who won't buy overly easy games, so when devs refuse to add higher difficulty options for those who want it, they're costing themselves sales. makes no sense to me, it can't be that difficult to add more difficulty options, a lot of games do it.

    • @Jack_80
      @Jack_80 2 месяца назад

@@darinherrick9224 that's why games should have a multitude of difficulty options. the trails games are rpgs that have 6 different difficulty options ranging from very easy to nightmare, so everyone can get the level of challenge they want.
devs that try to force one or the other are just costing themselves sales. although difficult games like dark souls seem to have a much larger market than easy games. the easy games don't really advertise themselves as being easy, people have to google it to find out.

After being disappointed with Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth I'm glad this one turned out to be just as good as Bloodstained ROTN.
My only gripes were the infuriating puzzles, and the lack of New Game Plus after beating the game.
