  • Watch as we cobble together a turbo system for a Ford 300 straight six using junkyard parts booger welded together!
The turbo is an HX35 from a Cummins diesel, running 5-6psi with a mildly ported head, stock valves, cam, and bottom end, Megasquirt, and 42lb injectors.

It’s not the best or most efficient way to do this. I did it because I was able to fab literally everything I needed so I was only out the cost of the turbo.
You lose ALL low end torque being setup this way, but the top end will put a grin on your face.
I would only do this on a toy I didn’t have to worry about being reliable or safe.

My only experience with this family of engines was a '66F100 with the 240 with a weak oiling system. It failed a crank at 85k miles in about 1980 and we turned the rusty truck into a trailer. I would never ever have thought of one of these as a candidate for boost. However, based on all of these positive comments about the big block sixes , I must have just been unlucky. So maybe in the future if a truck with one of these becomes available I won't automatically write it off. I used to love the sound of the rocker arms in these rumbling under the hood of my '66 F100.

On the 300 if older models if you don't change the pistons out some of the original pistons only have only a little distance in the amount of aluminum material between the top and 2nd ring so if you push it too hard and ts got a little mileage on them it will stress the material in places in that very small and then material and break it out if you try and run a high rpm I know because I drove one home after winding it too tight and breaking that lip between them like taking a pop-top on the can and lifting it up and down till it snaps off and damages the rings it ran like crap and people were blowing their horn because of the smoke it created trying to get it home, needless to say, had to have t bored 30 over to get the damage out of the cylinders replaced piston with ones that have a lot more meat between the rings so about 850 later it's running great lol but its a 1971 model best truck I ever owned that was 20 years ago still going strong I gave 1200.00 for it back about 25 years ago only thing wrong today is the manual trans roars in 1st and 2 gear its a 3 speed nwith 4th which is over drive with the side mount shift which has the aluminun housing i plan on pulling it his summerand replace the bad bearing or bearings since this transmittion is not out there anymore or hard to find they were used it in some mustangs also and few other cars (PS the pistions i put in back then were Baggers .30 over

I am a fan of the belt driven centrifugal superchargers that you can get for these trucks. Turbo is "better" overall, but the process is much less complicated. The centrifugal is quite a bit more efficient than a roots blower and makes more peak boost at the cost of a reduction of lower end boost.

    • @zarkeh3013

I did something similar and used a 1996 distributor without any module. then drilled distributor cap cyl1 and epoxied hall sensor and maget to the rotor for cam sync.
Using the TFI setup might work too but I did it this way.

I pulled 1 degree of timing per psi of boost and only run 93 octane or above. How much timing did you have in it? Do you have megasquirt controlling your timing?
I'm running about 29 degrees at 9psi at 5500rpms. Before boost, I had it set at 38 degrees. Trick Flow recommend 36-38 degrees total timing with their heads so I just went with their number. I'm only running 9.17:1 compression. Mine is a 350 Chevy engine. Your little 6 is a cool build. Good luck rebuilding everything.

You can also use a bead roller on the end of cold side piping. A bead and t-clamps will take a surprising amount of boost. Bead roller is available from Jegs and Summit fairly cheap.

I too would love to hear how you connected the megasquirt to the 300 I6. As a fellow man with long hair and several Prince shirts I have to support this channel on custom of our people.
18:20 you also cannot use an MLS gasket because there's no way you can clean the surface of the block well enough for proper adhesion without removing it from the truck; that sucker gotta be FLAT. Besides, having a head gasket that lets go early can save the block anyway as insurance, as Matt Happel said with LS engines and why he uses the paper gaskets so much.
For a rebuild, you might want to look into relocating the coolant inlet to the engine; the Ford 300s got all the cooling to the first piston and they tend to have issues with fuel burn because they literally never get warm enough (I8s had this problem too). the HAMB I know, has had a few threads on relocating it to a midpoint in the block.

Yep. I remember being young and enjoying turning wrenches. Now i'm middle age crazy and dread turning them. Good thing i chose farming as a career. 🤪 Soon as one thing is fixed, another breaks down..... Ran two 1982 Ford straight 6's and one 84 when i was young. Headers, intake, 4 brl carb, and cam on one of them. That one had some top end. And man were those dual 12 inch glass packs loud! Traded the last one (82 4×4 F150 short bed 33x12.50 all around) on a brand new Ford ranger XLT. Wasn't a mud hole around that truck wouldn't go through. But the lack of a/c (didn't come with one, was a Colorado truck) am radio, no cruise, got old. New ranger was "loaded" and the amenities were nice. The 4 cylinder wouldn't pull a sick whore off the pot! Now i have a 91 Dodge W250 Cummins, and 08 Tacoma. Dodge has around 500k, and is tired. With a rusted out cab. Tacoma 200k. Runs and drives like the day i drove it off the lot.
