  • Today, we run some "tests" on my clapped out 1994 Ford F-150. How long will it last at redline with no coolant? Is the 4.9L inline 6 as durable as people say they are?

    I had a 95 f150 with 300six , water pump went out on night when I was 30 minutes from home. It was getting dark and the truck was my spare so I said F it and just figured I'd drive as far as it got me. Got so hot that it locked up after 5 miles but luckily I had enough speed to jump start it again, went another ten miles and it locked up hard when I slowed way down for a turn jumped it again and it went another ten miles until I had to turn again and it finally locked up to totally about a mile from home. Got a ride home came back next morning started it right up and drove home changed water pump and drove for another 60k before I retired it.

      My friend did the same thing. It wasn't his water pump, but it was a fan belt for the fifth time. We were about 10 miles from his house drove to his house and then Change his 1980 Granada, with no tires another 15 miles to his other house. About 2 years ago, it formed a horrible rod knock, it still has daily truck. It was several years ago. But I believe it was somewhere around a 115° outside. Before we started towing his car. I got underneath his truck and And had to tell him that water was pouring out of his exhaust pipes.

    My 88 f150 4.9 (300 six) has 480,000 miles on it, doesn't smoke or leak. Still runs like new with the only significant work needed was a new timing gear at 300,000. This is my third Ford with a 300 six, they will last almost forever if you just do proper maintenance such as regular oil changes, etc.

    A buddy of mine got jealous and removed a thermostat bolt from the housing and put sand in the radiator. I went on a 2 1/2 drive out of town. Never got hot., AC and 70 mph all the way. That evening after arriving, while having coffee, I noticed it was wet under it. Sure as Shnt, there was residual everywhere. It was gritty. Opened the cap, no water, sand, and an aggravated owner. Went and got new coolant, radiator ,a thermostat and gasket as well as hose barbs and an adapter. Flushed it for an hour then did the same from opposite ends. Put it back together and it still runs like its new. 94, 120k miles. I bought it from the original owner. Great truck.

Bought a rust bucket with a beautiful straight six in it and rebuilt it and stuck it in the nice one. Later on I bought a super clean low miles rust free 96 F150 with the straight six and it performs so well.

    Some people in the comments said that that engine was good, but I wasn't sure about that. After seeing the shakiness and smoke, I knew it was worn out. When he tried to move the truck it knocked, so yes dead engine. It had oil so it was just abused before. I don't even like watching this type of stuff but ok. I had a 1997 mercury cougar with a 4.6l. bought it off a 75 year old woman who only put 50,000 miles on it. it was basically immaculate. Well me being a 16 year old thinking he was so bad ass whupped the ever living fucking shit out of it. Burnouts all the time, reverse j turns at 25 mph. Constantly smashing the gas, constantly going 130mph where it would govern off, drifting, red lines hard, dumping gallons of premium fuel into it which was only supposed to be unleaded. Racing. The only issue it had when i sold it at 130k miles is the first gear was a little stutterey before the geat change into second gear. I sold it 7 years qgo and its still running at 190k miles. Only major repair my buddy has had to make was a new head gasket which he replaced with his mechanic cousin. Fucking absolutely bullet proof ass motor and transmission.

      depends on the 302 (as you didn't say 5.0) those old ford blocks had a high nickle content to the casting...it is why chevy need 4 bolt main caps to even stay competitive with the little 2 bolt light casting ford....sorry...just saying....newer blocks forgo the nickle and that is why they came out with upper and lower girdles...the old saying at the race track was "you can't make enough power to break a Ford engine' came about because of the nickle casting.

    DUDE !
    That is epic dip$hitine$$ !
    Kind of reminds me of when a few friends and I got together with this 69 chevy truck with a 396...sure it was in pretty good shape and the engine ran like new with only 60k on the clock....but we decided to test it's durability by firing an armor piercing .50 BMG through the side of the truck and engine....and guess what !...It didn't even start !
    So all in all I would have to say that 300 is 10 times the engine as that old 396 !
    At least by your testing standards.
    That 300 held up better than most any other engine would have if it was 'tested' with the same issues.
    Only a slant six dodge would be able to hold it's own !

    Oh boy, there was probably nothing wrong with the motor to be honest. The smoke was probably more than likely from the old gas. Could of probably sold that motor for $500 easy

    • @GasGuzler
      @GasGuzler  6 месяцев назад

      Smoke was not from old gas, I hooked the lines up to a new tank because the old one was rusted. And I was told by the previous owner that it had blown a head gasket, and there were many other signs that the motor was not good internally. Also even a good running 4.9L is only worth around $350 at most, nobody wanted this one when there were plenty others for sale that ran well.

    We have it so bad in America that we can deliberately destroy bullet proof engines

    So you got a super Duty huh?.....well.....mines a "FOREVERDUTY". Shame you did this. Idve given hundreds of dollars for it. but I Appreciate the example.

      @GasGuzler  10 месяцев назад +1

      Not sure what you meant by “Super Duty”, and I stated it multiple times that this engine was already on its way out, if it was worth saving I wouldn’t have done this to it. Where I’m located these 4.9L engines are all you can find, I have a few perfectly good running motors that are for sale, if you really wanted one you can buy one of those. Nobody wanted this one it simply needed too much work.

    This ain’t no durability test. This is straight up abuse. Any engine would fail under these conditions.
