I agree. Ford really hurt my feelings when they discontinued the 300. I drove an old 1970 F100 for 6 years and I was not easy on it. I broke just about everything on that old pickup EXCEPT the motor. And yes, it was the 300 inline six.
Definitely one of the best all straight 6 motors made great torque numbers!
Yeah as long as you didn't rev it to high and float the valves
@Adam Chapman nah the aussie barra is better. Dohc, not underpowered, and the factory block can handle 2000+hp.

One of the greatest engines of all time. Awesome seeing it get some love.
My Dad was so sad in 96 when they made the new body style with the v6. He bought the last i6 they had because they were selling them side by side. The salesman asked which one he wanted, new body or current and there wasn't a bit of hesitation. On the way home he just kept shaking his head and saying he couldn't believe they were getting rid of one of the best engines of all time. He put well over 300k on that '96 f150 with the big six and all he ever did was scheduled maintenance and oil changes. Best truck ever and I wish every day that I had it right now.
And it's a shame all manufacturers stop making the inline 6 cylinders some of them bet ever made
I did a fresh rebuild on a 300 six, 268 grind comp cam, 240 heads, HEI distibutor, EFI split manifolds, and a Weber 38/38 on the stock intake, and my old gal cooks 🤙
I wouldn't even bother looking for one of these in a junkyard. Imagine finding someone's project car in a barn and going straight past it for the 🚜
This was more satisfying and way more fun then almost everything else I've seen from this show. I really want to see them start making power on all sorts of different, underdog engines.
I had a smile on my face the entire episode.
There isn't a gearhead alive that grew up around 300s that didn't wonder why that bulletproof engine never got the love the 302 and 351s did.

I've taken 2 of these apart about 4 times each now, and yes- These will run 70 mph on the highway with a half ton of sand in the bed, with 2 cracked pistons, all rings seized, and not 2 squirts of oil. Then I re-re-built it with 5 new pistons and all new rings, bearings, and a HO oil pump. Absolutely love turning the key on my '85 F-150. Runs smooth as a sewing machine, even the air conditioning holds a charge and works.
It may never go fast, but I can pull a stump at idle and 100% guaranteed to take me anywhere I need to be.
This.
Every gear-head friend I have has a similar story of an abused 300 that would break hearts, not parts. The old "they quit making them cause they can't profit from selling parts that don't break" story has stood the test of time pretty damn well
Its hard to kill an old Ford.
Had one of these in a 76 f350. Most of the truck rusted away, valves outta adjustment, and most service was "it's still running, drive it". Motor had an easy million miles on it. Still most reliable truck in the fleet.
Built Ford Tough! 👍 too bad everything that every company makes today is garbage.
I've owned two myself. Absolutely awesomely dependable engine the 300.
I want this so bad. It’s the ultimate crawl around and tug truck motor. Even the NA motor is good with a manual and 4wd. It pulls way more than you would think quietly.
Those 300 motors were in so many 1/2, 3/4 and 1 ton even I bet some heavy hauling 2 ton or so cargo trucks and flat beds throughout tge late 80's to early 2000's, most underappreciated and overworked engine probably ever.

The 300 is just one of those engines that everyone loves and has a respect for. Never met any gearhead who didn't like the 300. I grew up with several full size Broncos in the family, what I wouldn't give for a decent example with a 300 and manual everything behind it.

To be fair, when it made 88HP the governor for the industrial application was still in place(you can see it above the alternator in the first dyno run). Just removing the governor and properly tuning the stock carb should have easily gotten it close to the automotive engines 170 gross HP rating.
@@STAY-GOLD-VINYL The efi ones had the good exhaust manifolds and the higher compression head (though i think the carb head can be made to flow better). I think starting off you'd be better off to carb swap an efi motor than to start with the carb one. Youre swapping intakes to lose the YFB anyway

Gee thanks guys. My 87 f150 300 4x4 B.W. 4sp stick short bed I've had for 20 years honked twice while watching this video. My other is a 93 f350 7.3 4dr 4x4 auto and it deserves a turbo first. Both best motors ford ever put in a truck. My grandkids will drive these trucks. Both have pulled unbelievable loads. Neither are fast but are unstoppable.
My friend had one in a delivery van and ran it for months with 5-10 lbs oil pressure.
It's fun, seeing someone finally giving the "Big Six" the recognition it deserves! Good job, guys! I had a 1982 Ford Econoline van, with this engine in it, and I agree: This is the best inline six cylinder engine on the planet. I gained a lot of top end torque, by merely installing a bigger exhaust and down-pipe on the stock exhaust manifold, paired with the factory intake and mono-jet carburetor.(Identical to what was on your engine when you got it) I had the 4-speed overdrive transmission, which was created by changing the 3rd gear ratio to create the overdrive. That meant, the transmission acted like it was a 5-speed transmission, missing 3rd. With the huge RPM gap between 2nd and 3rd, it would "run out of breath" in second, before I could get the RPM high enough, to be in its torque curve in 3rd. The big exhaust solved that, by giving it enough torque band, to cover that spread. I was able to use it to pull a travel trailer.
Ford 300 is one of the best engines ever made. I drove one for two years, doing flooring work, overloaded as hell, and had 488k miles on the odometer. Had close to 550k, when trans literally fell out, van had some serious cancer. What hurts the 300 so much is that 60's cylinder head. I'd love to see a modern free valve head made for the 300, and see how much it wakes up.
Have you seen the Australian barra motor?
Literally those inline 6 engines (the AMC, slant 6, and even the chevy 250/292) were just undestructible, wonder if someone got one to a million miles...

My concern is always longevity. I’d be interested in NA upgrades at the 250-300hp level that still preserved the reliability the 300 is known for.
With the turbo: o-ring the head, steel head gasket (may already have one), water injection, inconel valves, electric water pump drive. Their intercooler helps keep temperatures down. The piston rings become the limiting factor, but they might last 100k even with hard running.
It will last as long as the Toyota turbo i6s. Strong ass engine. It can handle the turbo.
My bigger concern is torque, for a pickup build
Of course, keeping longevity
@@rylan642The nice thing is this is an industrial motor built like a brick shithouse with very strong components and internals that have great reputation. They did not need alot of boost to make over 400 hp and plenty of torque to back it, which would be more than plenty, unlike the new ram hurricane which is a 3.0 gasser non industrial motor pushing 27 lbs of boost to be in the 500s club and 22 lbs of boost to make 420hp big difference those motors are not going to last in my opinion even for an I6 I think they're too damn hopped up and not built strong enough because it's for mass production and its stellantis lol.

It was summer 1977 .... An apprentice working for the Santa Fe railroad signal department had just bought a F-150 inline 6 Ford 300 cubic inch and it was a short wheel base all wheel drive getting about 18 miles per gallon with a definite misfire driving from Phoenix Arizona up Black canyon freeway to Flagstaff. As I was riding along to check this rig out it was used and I told him let's definitely get a set of plug wires when we get to Flagstaff. I popped the plug wires on there for him and the next few days we were getting 20 plus miles per gallon on the same highway and we're cruising 60/65 miles an hour. Like I said it's used it's not beat up kind of a dull turquoise green color. Can't remember how many miles it had on it it was pretty clean under the hood no oil leaks. Suspension seam tight no rattles good rebound compression dampening. The wheels were just stocked with hubcaps probably 7 and 1/2 in wide with g something maybe g78 radial tires that you would find on a station wagon. So I said hell let's find out what she does and hit they are royals and see what it does in the sand. And in loose white dry sand like sugar it held its own. Even back then six cylinders were gaining popularity. Just a few years before my 69 Nova won its class and third runner up in super stock at the Indy Nationals ... I can't remember what the guy gave for the truck used but it wasn't unusual price either way but to me it looked like a blank canvas. Today you can still get performance parts from Clifford research places like that I haven't checked but I'm sure you can probably find a lot of stuff at summit racing. It all depends on how you want to set it up to do whatever you want to do. Nothing will replace the sound of a sweet little V8 sitting in the same truck.. but in line 6 have a lot of advantages as you can see in this video. Have a sportsman was just setting up the truck to go hunting with or fishing or whatever and outdoors woods type truck to beat around in with the boy had there on the railroad I believe would be perfect. For one thing if you're out there and places like Arizona and your hundreds of miles from bum f*** Egypt and you got to change a belt or a hose or maybe a bunch of hole in the oil pan you need to get in there and do it now cuz nobody's going to be around for years. You set yourself up a tool kit for all kinds of emergencies pack it away you got a mechanical ability. That little F-150 Ford is like a Swiss army knife you can turn it to whatever horsepower you want and torque to do whatever job you want to have. Pull your boat to the lake. What street tires go play with people on the drag strip. Polish it up put some bling under the hood take it to a car show.. and for people who hate cluttered up dog houses with huge V8 you got lots of room on that inline six do all kinds of anything without busting your knuckles. For anyone into Motorsports inline 6 f150 is your everyday driver it's your bulldog it's your tractor. It's going to drag home you're blowed up race car. It's your family beater grocery getter. Tune it for performance.. make it comfortable power steering power brakes air conditioning tricked out stereo custom cab. Compared to cowboy Cadillacs. It's your mustang off-road sports sedan
The kid has my respect. He knows his stuff!
Mine too,,Yo👍💯
Wicked to see. I take care of around 40 of these that run oilfield pump jacks. Would be wicked to see this turning a jack 😂
It'd run that one pump jack so hard, you could shut the other 39 down, and still make production
Kinda pointless dont those jacks only turn like 1800rpm
@@rustedratchetgarage6788 yea was just joking.
@@rustedratchetgarage6788 Kinda pointless? Kinda joking.
I had a 300 6 in a Bronco. It wasn’t fast but it was unstoppable. It’s one flaw was a sticking float valve. I still kidded about fixing it with a hammer.
You guys have the most fun job ever, great video.
I was going to say that I really wish they would do less of these esoteric builds and more LS builds but i'm a rotten liar. Bravo PN and vive la différence!
Great job Pat and Frankie, my favorite Engine Power build to date! Everyone loves and has a good story about a 300-6 they had.
Exactly, such an iconic and prolific engine. I would love to see more series with the criteria of iconic, in tons of stuff, not really sought after but simultaneously loved by most who have owned and worked on them.
That's weird but true. I never thought about that. I have a million stories.
Hands down best episode yet.
I, and every friend I have, have always had a love for the old 300 motors. With the Barra being not offered stateside, we all wondered what an old 300 would do.
I hope to see many many others follow your footsteps and see a slowstang powered by one on the various street/strip racing social media accounts soon.
I had a grin on my face as soon as you showed that rusty hunk of iron.
I am in AUS, it would be great to see the guys do a Barra and be blown away literally.
@@Blackbirdrod81 a Barra engine its same thing on 300 .just the head its crossflow air and the its the plus cause I have more room to grainger some aluminum of and. Make bigger exhaust and intake, cause they Barra its aluminum head then add goods to make power 800hoses
Barra the world 💯
I keep coming back to watch this over and over….
Always wanted to build one of these, not sure how common it is but these guys proved it was a worthy engine build 👍
Amazing engine and a lot of people do cool stuff. I've read on the forums of heavy haulers that people put on a cummins turbo then take the cam and advance it one or two teeth to move the power band lower in the rpm range and make mountains of torque. I rebuilt a 300 that the cylinders were so worn in the center that the glaze breaker stone wasn't touching and the bearings were only showing the copper. New bearings and rings and she still ran amazing.
Glad to see Pat stepping out of his NA comfort zone!
Have to say I love these type of builds. So cool to make big power with other engines than a LS.
That's a pretty smooth power delivery. Almost linear. Damn what a nice build!!
Just like Pat says, gotta love those old 300 sixes. I fondly remember my 84 ford. Almost 300K miles and never cracked open the engine. Never added a single drop of oil between changes.
One of the best engines ever produced mine has 210,000 miles never uses a drop of oil between changes using Shell Rotella T4 10w 30 diesel conventional
I'm not buying it. 300 000 miles and never been serviced? Come on.

I have been waiting for this episode for months, I'm so glad it's finally here!
There are reason(s) those 300 6's lasted forever, and you guys just nailed what they were.
My two favourite underrated engines are the Chevrolet 4.3 V6 & this glorious Ford 300. You fella's did them both super justice. I've owned both, and loved both for different reasons.
Thanks a bunch.
All I can say is!!! WOW! Thank is impressive. I’m a Chevy guy and this impressed me. Great job guys.
In the early 1990's, we used to sell this motor in F-150's as the million mile motor because they never broke down nor wore out in a stock configuration.
@@bigboreracing356 , maybe the durability and reliability performance had something to do with it being in production since 1965? Nah, it was just a low rpm powerplant. You're right!!! SMH
@@bigboreracing356, my sarcasm wasn't due to being offended. It had to do with the lack of competence about the topic. The emissions may have had an impact on the discontinuation of production of this powerplant. The 302 in the F-150 only had minimum performance gains and less reliability. 60 mph you say, where do you live; don't answer that! Lol The 60's were the muscle cars original era. I would rather have a 1996 F-150 with a 4.9l I-6 than that year with a 5.0l V-8 or a 1997 F-150 with a 3.7l V-6 or a 4.6l V-8. Thanks for your comment, good talk; really!
@@bigboreracing356 Big lazy motors are reliable, the fuel efficiency wasn't so great but it sure was an admired workhorse
@@bigboreracing356 , no truck salesperson would sell an F-150 with an I-6 if they were planning to pull a maximum load ever. If they needed more towing capacity we would sell them an F-250 with a 5.8l V-8. Let me explain the reason for an F-150 reg cab truck. It's and entry level truck for the person or company that only needs basic performance and capability with marginal towing capacity. Have a nice life.

Been waiting for this all summer!! Finally comes out on my last day of summer, sweet!!
Best project I've seen in recent memory. I hadn't heard of this show. Awesome build.
Learned so much about the anatomy of a turbo system from this - on top of the epic result from the I-6!
Pat wanted more boost like he wanted more pens in his pocket. Great episode! 💙
Hahahahaha

@@nonsequitur807 Brought back memories of my dad coming home from work and all his writing utensil-filled pocket protectors. This was the 60's.

Been waiting patiently for Richard to do one of these. He's mentioned it a time or two. Y'all beat him to it and knocked it out of the park! Those numbers were Amazing and not even at a full atmosphere!
"Quick! Get the welder!" Dad/Mechanic jokes are the best.
Thank you for finally giving the love this motor deserves. Best engine by far.
Awesome results!! Would love to see a centrifugal supercharger on it next and compare the Dyno curves between the turbo and the supercharger!
I LOVE this! 300’s are awesome and always wondered what one would do turbo’d. Thanks guys!
Had I known you were going to turbocharge the build:
Borrowing from Pittsburgh Power-I would have stuck with lower compression ratio pistons. This is the Pittsburgh Power method of reducing the peak pressures but still building a lot of horsepower big semi truck diesel engines.
I would love to see you at 20 lb of boost would be on 8 1/2 to 1 compression ratio pistons. I had a 1992 Ford Probe with eight and a half to 1 compression pistons and it was a slug. I was one of the 90%. The lucky 10% had a turbocharged version of this car with the same engine and it rocked! Especially by 1992 standards.
Next Ford 300 l6 build see if you can build it to be turbocharged from the get-go. Attempt to get a more sturdy head gasket.
It's so incredible that you're almost getting two to one horsepower to cubic inches!
A shop I worked in used to build 6s for racing. With a 6-pack, 12:1 compression, modified head, header, balanced and blueprinted, the 300 would dangle the front wheels down half of the straightaway on a 1/4 mile oval. The cars were '30s sedans and coupes with straight front axles in "Hobby" class. We also built 292 Chevs as well as the smaller 240, 250, 232 and 225 inlines. They were all awesome, but the 225 Chrysler was a beast.
Those 300 are hard to kill. Nice work guys.
I've always been a 302 guy.. but damn this engine build has me rethinking my whole truck/car life
By far my favorite series so far, I’d love to see this in something soon
I built a 300 with a 2-barrel intake, 302 carb, headers, and a torque cam. It twisted the 1/2 ton drive line out of my truck a piece at a time in 6 months. I had to replace Everything with 3/4 ton Dana Posi, 1-ton granny trans, 11-inch dump truck clutch and a custom driveshaft. Two years later I had to weld, box and fish plate my frame back together to live behind that engine. I NEVER had any use for a V-8 after that.
We had to service a turbo 300 back in the 1980's. It was being used as an water pump drive for a irrigation well and ran on natural gas. The thing was a beast and pumped many GPM. The farmer called us in as the pump had quit. When we arrived the engine was missing. Seems the blow off valve stuck closed and it bootstrapped itself to oblivion. It was a very cool set up and had worked well for years. We installed a small cam small block Ford in its place.
My jam dropped when you revealed the stats on the last run! You guys have the best job in the world. Playing in the world of big boy toys.
Love the underdog engine stuff. Keep that stuff up! Throw in more engines that don't get enough love!
I love the straight 6's, currently in love with the 98' Volvo s90 but also had an older late 80's Mercedes Benz 3.2 that just rocked but the 300 started it all in a 70's ford 4x4 tow truck... glad to see it
A bought a 1995 f150 with a 300 4.9 out in Denver Colorado, I did oil change thermostat belt got on the truck and drove it all the way to Californian and roll this day I’ve been using the truck as my daily driver. I’ve had the truck for near one year now and I can say I love it it’s a five speed sheet bed 4x4 .. dude if you guys would raffle that engine or you ever want to sell it I hope you pic me to win it lol.. I never want to sell this truck I want it to stay in the family for ever my dad had one when I was younger and he passed it down to my older brother I always wanted one because my older brother taught me how to drive stick shift on it so every time we work with our pop’s I would go get lunch for all of us on that beautiful blues truck 🛻. Now I want to pass my truck to my son or daughter .. I love 95 and down Ford trucks and it better be a straight six.. if you’d like to give that beautiful engine a home I promise it’ll always stay in the family.. good bless us all and America... man you guys are awesome thanks next you should build a dodge slanted six....
Honestly this is the best episode ever!! Imagine this in my old bronco.. I'd rock it for sure!
Ford has made some great engines over the years and this is one of them!
Wish they would bring back a good straight 6

My favorite episode ever! I had to watch it again! Now I need to build my own!
This episode was so much fun to watch, I didn’t even know I needed to see this.
Where can I find Pat's parts list for this project. I want to use at least part of it for my 300 rebuild in my 1994 F150.
In the description of the video scroll down and you'll see it
Don't waste the money. For what you'll spend you could drop a 351 in
@@raabsand This has got to be the dumbest comment on here. Anybody who's half smart can see that thing easily puts a 351 to shame with how old and robust it is and still putting out 500+ with only 14 psi boost and a mildish build. The exotic nature of the build itself makes it more fun and desirable than a plain v8 block you're goning to expect 500+ out of with the same level build or bigger. Plus who actually runs a combo like this and can say they pump 450+ in an inline 6 instead of the same v8 everybody else runs?
