It seems that the most common theme in the comments is the price tag. So, how much do YOU think this lens should cost?
30 bucks
Let’s not overreact guys, this lens is going on sale for Christmas for $99 and will stay on sale forever 😂
99 euros would be the right price and its correct value with a large profit margin for the manufacturer
I paid 0 for this lens - free with purchase of the S9, and I still feel gypped. Useless for video, since not even a thread for an ND filter, no focus distance markings to find hyperfocal distances, and of course no aperture or AF. F8, seriously. Does look pretty on the S9.
Impatiently waiting on the review of the new samsyang/Rokinon 35-150mm f2-2.8
Can talk about pinhole lenses all day, the difference here is that this lens is £220, which is ludicrous. There are E mount AF Samyang full frame lenses at f2.8 that are as small as this, and the same price.
Are they L-mount tho ?!
@@TopshelfJunior Samyang are in the L-mount Alliance now, right? So they should be eventually.
@@bensinger6655 Word, didnt know that ! Gonna look into it and see what they have Thx !
I agree, with the caveat that you get it for free when you buy an S9, so are they really expecting people to pay $200?
@@walrusgumboot I will be.
If I could buy these lens for $50 it would make sense. But I feel like at the price point I could get a much better/more interesting toy lens or cheap vintage lens that would fill/exceed the same need as a point and shoot toy sort of lens.
My favourite thing about this lens is I always lose lens caps and now that job is already done for me 😂
🤣 Lens caps and those 'silly little plastic hot shoe covers' as you say ;)
😂🔝🔝🔝 a convenience included in its price!
It's a great idea and I love it, but $200 is just too much.
Josh.... I still hate it.
Honking bit of kit isn't it 🙈 at £200 too!
Fair enough!🤣 There's definitely more impressive lenses out there!
Having just sold my Fujifilm XF10 because of 'missed focus' issues I'm not happy I'm now getting the exact same issue with the lens, but both as you say with the S9 as well, create great images. As for video, it's bizarre they are pushing the IBIS and excellent focus then ship it with a manual focus pancake.
Hi David, thanks being here in the first 30 mins! Appreciate it. I agree, it's weird that a manual focus lens was their accompanying product to launch with a lightweight camera that boasts great AF and decent IBIS. It's definitely not a video lens, that's for sure!
@@JoshCameron and there's the reason mine is going back to the retailer. I believed the marketing hype about it being 'an upgrade' from a smartphone but after a week I've come to the conclusion that the iPhone photo and video stabilisation is better, the wind nose reduction is better and the screen shooting in bright sunlight is better. Then I got an error trying to share a 27s video where the LUT app told me to use the Instagram app to upload, final straw, the RAW files aren't supported in Apple Photos or Darkroom. It's a dud for my use case, hobby photography (no viewfinder) and car club videos(15 minute limit).
In Italy, as in other eurozone countries, it is possible to purchase this small lens for 99 euros together with the S9. This is the same price at which you can buy a similar pancake lens like the 7artisans 35mm 5.6. So I don't think it's that scandalous. From my tests, this cap lens from Lumix is also quite sharp and the results are more than satisfactory (as well as fun)
I am planning to buy an S9 and am looking forward to trying out the 26mm/f8. I also have some small Sigma iSeries lenses waiting for the S9 (24mm, 45mm, 90mm).
The Sigma contemporary lenses are perfect for the S9.
isn't 26mm same as iphone x1 zoom?
I think it'll be a fun photo lens but as a video dude mainly I just can't see myself picking it up brand new. I'll likely wait for a good deal on it from the used market then give it a try because it does pair nicely with the tiny body of the S9 and plus sometimes just a bit of for fun photography or street photography is a nice change of pace :)
If you have more fun taking the photo, does that make it a better photo? I think it does, since everyone (including myself) seems to be more concerned with specs than how much enjoyment the product actually gives them. Have I changed your mind on this lens, or do you still hate it?
I think it would be an acceptable release for $100.
@@BalatroNot even, much rather spend my money on a TTartisan lens for only 50 quid
@@CallMeRabbitzUSVI Understandable.
I don't find manually focusing fun. I have fun with action cams - no worry about focusing.
4:27 could you expand on this? what are your gripes with focus peaking on Lumix cameras?
The only things that comes to mind is that there is no “touch to magnify” in MF mode. You must turn the focus ring. Sony cameras has excellent touch to magnify feature in MF.
Arr the photos taken in this video in camera luts or lightroom presets? Any link?
totally agree with you ...seeing a lot of reviews going that way of only reviewing by the specs, not even having tested it themselves, just talking specs and making other reviews opinions their own. What's the point of 'reviewing' this way? This lens is very nice for what it is meant for.
It serves no purposes at all - can't be used for video since no ND possible, can't be used in point and shoot mode because it has no autofocus but needs to be focused, not a lens for creative uses since one cannot alter DOF for a given subject camera distance. It just looks good on the S9 - it's a decoration.
@@markr041 my guess…you’re just sharing based on spec reading and not used it yourself? Because some of things you’re saying aren’t right. Since it has f8 you can shoot video with it, if you’re used to MF this isn’t a issue when shooting. Also, this lens is meant for travel/ streelt photography…and if you’re familiar with true street photography then you would have known that f8 MF is like the holy grail. And belief me, those pro shooters are fast, able to capture that decisive moment at F8 MF.
Also this is like a lenscap-lens ..so what bad is there to talk about exact the obvious ‘limited features’
@KevinvanDiest You can't read - I said I received the lens for free. You also have no clue about video. At base ISO 640 for Vlog and shooting at 30 fps using the 180 rule, f8 will lead to massive overexposure without an ND filter on even a cloudy day. I don't have to use the lens I own to test that, because I am an experienced videographer. Do you want to see overexposed video on my channel to convince you? Maybe at night at the second base ISO of 4000 f8 might be ok, and I might try that. But, what's the point? I would still have to manually focus in the dark. Is that "fun"? The lens is a prop to make the S9 look good. I think the S9 is great (and you understand I bought the S9 and got the lens with it for free).
Do you have the lens? Do you know anything about video?
@@markr041 good for you👌🏼
@@KevinvanDiest I hope you learned something. You are welcome.
Thanks for your job, your channel has been huge inspiration and the source of information regarding Lumix cameras. What is your opinion regarding quality of Lumix S line lenses? I've got myself 5iix not so long ago, and still wondering how to expand my lens set. However, there's many reports regarding poor QA for Lumix S series, specifically about glue separation on the inner lens element. It made me worried, and after examining my 50mm 1.8 I've indeed found quite large circle around the glass somewhere inside the lens, which ought to be the thing everyone is talking about, glue separation which can lead to bubbles inside the lens and totally destroy it. On top, my 20-60 has some visible moisture, oily spots behind the front element. Which makes me think if I should keep this system at all. It's a shame, because both the camera and the image quality of the lenses are amazing. Thank you.
Nikon has a 26 and Lumix could of done the same. A bit disappointing
Josh, great video. I love my S9 and growing very fond of the 26mm. Question, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to double punch in to magnify the focus area. All I can do to magnify is to use the focus mode on the command dial and zoom in. Any suggestions on how to activate double tap? Cheers for the great content mate.
$200 seems steep when the 7artisans 35mm f 5.6 is available for $100 and has a built in lens cap. Or just a little thicker you can get a 50mm f2 from TTArtisans for only $70. So I can see that it might be interesting, but the price needs to come way down.
Would this make a great landscape lens then?
When I saw this lens it made sense. To buy a L mount full frame lens starts at £400. That's second had price. After going through the specs of the S9 and all the things it can do I feel its ahead of its time. To be able to link it to a phone app and edit on the go. Can take it out for the day and upload footage or pictures when you have a break. I think Lumix looked at how many social media tiktoker or instareamers use there phone for content. They want to take footage or pictures and upload it quick. They want a camera that is small as a phone with a good enough lens that is better then their phones. Means they aren't using their phone battery. They don't need a EVF as the camera is pointed at them. They don't need a mic jack as they are posting selfies or dancing videos or gym workouts. If their on holiday they can use the camera instead of a phone. The negative the S9 got did a world of good for Lumix as it was the most talked about camera for a month.
Not exactly, this time controversy didn't lead to more sales. The S9 is still fully in stock all colors at BH, Adorama, hell I can pick it up today at my local Best Buy 😊
@@CallMeRabbitzUSVI never said more sales. I said talked about. The GH7 came out a few weeks away that hype lasted for 2 weeks or less. The S9 was talked about for longer.
It has a mic jack and influencers and vloggers use external mics all the time - wireless lavaliers often.
@@markr041 was ment to say head phone jack. As people complined that it didn't have that.
I give you a 10 for your constant Panasonic optimism but as us Aussies would say, that’s a hard turd to polish. On your people judging before using comment, I am pretty sure you were given one, the average user is asked to pay 200 pound to try in most cases so that comment is slightly unfair,
That damn camera though. Not only do they insult us by giving us the ubiquitous side hinged flippy flappy rear screen, they then rub salt into the wounds by giving it no viewfinder.
I'm totally fine with both of those things, so I guess it's just down to the user's preference. I rarely use the EVF on my S5II and S5IIX, and I'd rather a flippy style screen than a limiting up/down tilt screen :)
No camera is perfect for everyone I guess!
It's impossible to shoot from the hip with this setup, I hadn't realised it wasn't tilt 'on the body', I found myself having to hold the screen with my left hand with screen opened and tilted up to me.
@@DavidMBanes Which camera do you like / or gonna buy instead ?
@@TopshelfJunior I’m not. When I returned to photography a year ago I was looking for a ‘social media’ camera for use with my car club. There wasn’t one so I bought a Fujifilm X-E4 for photos and video, then a very old used X-M1 for walk around street photography. I believed the marketing for the S9 so intended to sell the Fujifilms; of course now I’m keeping them.
@@DavidMBanes Word. I'm getting the S9 in 2days, it'll be here. Backup body for the S5ii.. But one thing about it, I am DEFINITELY still keeping my X-T5 lol. I love that thing.
I could get behind this lens except for the lack of filter threads. A lens like this screams to have some sort of diffusion filter added (or built in with toggle switch?) like a pro-mist or glimmer glass. I think it's correct that this was made for people wanting that manual disposable camera feel, so why not give the photos a little extra personality and film-like appearance?
It seems similar to the g mount 14mm. With the small aperture, focus doesn't have to be perfect
The worst thing about this lens is after the preorder period is over (which it is), it'll cost people a whopping $200.00 to get one. Ouch.
I wouldn't hate this lens if it was priced accordingly, which is less than $50. But it costs $200.
Let's just compare it to Canon 28mm f/2.8 which costs $300:
Canon is 3 (I repeat, THREE) stops brighter, has variable aperture, has auto focus, has filter thread, has customizable ring, has MF/AF button and better construction.
Panasonic 26mm pancake is terrible for $200.
LUMIX/Sigma need to release some short 2.8 lenses in the same vain as Sony, Nikon, and Canon
They are already here - the Sigma 45mm f2.8, for example
5:20
Proceeds to compare it to Leica Q3. "Its only 2mm wider. Their lenses are autofocus and stops down to 1.7, and this one is manual-focus and only f8.....😅
Lol I know that you are being facetious here, but its like comparing a Lada to a Lambo 😂
I get what they were going for, but not for $200. It's a pretty big miss by Panasonic.
What I don't understand: it's an f8 26mm FF-Lens, why does Panasonic don't have marked 3 Meter on the lens? If You focussing 3 Meter, all is sharp from 1,47 m to infinity!
I must say I agree with people who are not happy about this lens. It's not only overprised but manufactured with inherent flaws such as plastic body, no filter or cap option. I mean make it €100 lens and add thread for filter at least - noone will complain much about it. But this is intentional and just a money grab. So no thanks.
p.s. how are you supposed to switch from photo to video with this lens - switch the lens every time you decide to grab a 10sec video?
Love it! but i’ll probably get it used
Why would I waste my precious time on a lens like this when I have fantastic Sigma 17mm and 45mm lenses? Life is short. I can use my super nice Sigma lenses in MF no need to spend 250 extra.
Wow
canon r8 + 28mm 2.8 and 50mm 1.8 destroy it witout any chance
Panasonic wasted money by manufacturing this lens to be honest.
Since the kit lenses for the previous models was a 20-60 with a faster aperture, I'm guessing this is strictly targeted as what you used it for, a walk-around lens. Useless lens for me, but informative review. No viewfinder on the S9 is no big deal for me as I'm 99% video and don't use a viewfinder. ProRes is a huge plus for me tho, so saving up for that S5iix.
Camera arrives in two days, but I can't find that lens ANYWHERE !!! If anybody has any leads let me know. Looking forward to this setup.
Where are you based? I didn't realise this lens was so hard to get a hold of!
@@JoshCameron I'm in the US, in Los Angeles. It's on pre-order / out of stock on Amazon and B+H. Seen a couple people selling it for almost double.. It's weird, everybody talked crap about it but, it's sold out everywhere lol. Randomly, and I mean no disrespect here...I saw on soome Japanese YT and influencer YT's in Japan that, the lens was a hot commodity, w/ the camera. Not saying they bought all of them but, just saying...people want the S9 + pancake combo.
I think this lens can be quite fun but I have to say what everyone is saying. It's too expensive. For like 99€ I would consider it, but 240€. For that prize it should be a F2.8 (or F4) with AF.
What exactly is fun about this lens - trying to manually focus? It is a decoration.
@@markr041 FUn cause it'S tiny and you can ez carry the camera everywhere. Also with an F8 at 26mm there ist no real focusing. You maybe have two ZOnes 0-10m and 10- infinity. If you miss focus on that lens, the there is no hope for you :D
@riseGoib I can use the Sigma 45mm f2.8 and carry the camera everywhere, and have fun creating shots to look like I want (vary DOF, for example) and not worry about focus (AF). And I can shoot proper video. The lens cannot be used for video (180 rule, 640 base ISO) leads to massive overexposure at f8 during the day. Again, if I want fun, worry free video I can and do use an action cam. The lens on a FF camera makes little sense. It is a decoration. I got it for free, so my view has nothing to do with price. And if you have fun with it taking photos on a camera basically oriented to video, that is great.
@@markr041 See that's the problem. Not every Lens is created for you. This lens is for the S9. It's for people who want a tiny Camera to carry everyday and don't worry about Shutter Angle or anything like that. I don't know what the 45mm has to to with a 26mm but okay. There are always people who want the best pic quality and take 5 lenses with them everyday but those people are few and not the target. It's for the people who just want the smallest possible FF Setup (cause Social Media is all about FF, if you need it or not).
I would love some Pancake 2.8 lenses pared with my S5 II X and I don't even like Wideangle like 26mm but I can accept that Lumix will not always release stuff that I like. That's what I mean with would be fun, to use and try a Wideanlge like 26mm without breaking the bank. I won't spend a few 100 Bucks at a lens I maybe never get comfortable with.
If it was £50 then okay. But I’m sorry there is no way I’d ever even consider paying £100 for that lens let alone £219. No chance.
$200 for a $25 lens
Sounds rubbish! I'd rather adapt a pancake vintage (Nikon EM 35mm f1.8 with dumb adapter) and have change left over 😂 please don't become one of these soul-selling brand RUclipsrs. 😭 £200 it seems niche & novelty for a premium price.
I appreciate your opinion, and it's the same opinion that most people have! But, please don't confuse this video as me 'selling my soul' to the brand - the take I have here is pretty neutral with a firm understanding of the good and bad sides. I agree that the price tag is too high for a lens like this, and I also agree that it's definitely not a "must have" lens for 99% of people.
I did enjoy using it however, and that's all I want to report on :) I'm just enjoying the creative process at the moment, and this channel has always been about creating with Lumix gear, regardless of whether I'd actually recommend it to the masses or not :)
@@JoshCameronyeah sorry, not kind to say that really, no reason to distrust you; you're my go to for Panny reviews.
Just been bitten by RUclipsr camera/tech people a few times now and sick of the hype and cover ups that goes on, Gerald Undone recently did a video along those lines.
In other news, are you going to be reviewing the Samyang 35-150mm L-mount? Really excited to see what people make of it in L-mount before buying it. L mount kit is a pain to sell (or mega depriciation) after commiting in buying it, so always skeptical in buying it.
I can't its a good optical quality lens
