This year I recommitted to double bass. Got the pedal I’ve been pining after and threw myself into it. Also, speed around the kit is another needy area. All to be worked on this year!

Ive been playing for 50 years but had a stroke in 13. It affected my right side and to the point where I couldnt even hold a stick. Been working to get it back ever since. The muscles know what to do but the nerves cant get them to respond. Ive made great progress but i still have a long way to go. Samba's and shuffle's have been especially difficult. Even contemplated quiting. But last week the doubles have started to come back and have inspired me to keep going. So my weakness is the right side of my body especially my bass drumming. Stamina and consistant time keeping is what ive been working on lately and now il start playing shuffle and sambas to get them tight. Ill get it back but itll take time and ill have fun doing it!

I started down this road last year, in no small part because of you Rob! I hear you in my head saying, "work on your hands!" After 13 years drumming I finally got a practice pad, and I've been using it a TON to overhaul my grip, and specifically learn the push-pull technique. Definitely making progress. The reason I did that was I realized, while I have certain strengths as a drummer, speed was not one of them; you can time me with a sundial! My hand technique held me back. So I needed to get better at that and I am! I also put some good time last year into learning to play swing, and use brushes. For this year:
    - I want to continue learning swing and brushes.
    - Clean up my playing using an excellent online drum course I purchased last year but have underutilized.
    - I want to put more time in on the kit.
    - I want to join a local swing / big band.
    - Get on board and comfortable with recording myself (I don't really like doing that at this point).
    - #5, Visualize. At age 49 none of your 5 points really surprised me, except #5 did a little. Visualizing success is a habit I'd like to develop.
    Thanks Rob!
    Jeremy

Hello Rob, thanks again for your help. I really suck at a lot of things but here are the main ones: Polyrythmic (5 and 7), note grouping on 5 and 7, foot-hand coordination at high tempos, prevent injuries - sometimes after 3 or 4 hours of practice I feel pain especially in my left hand. There so many other stuff but I let some subjects for others lol. Have a very blessed and great year, you and of course your family. God bless

I stopped playing drums 30 years ago. I've decided to return to them. I have MUCH more information to draw on now...your channel being one great source. I've set up a daily practice regimen...metronome, playing with songs, and working fill drills. One of my immediate challenges is "independence" of limbs. It's the old, "rub your tummy/pat your head" syndrome. So frustrating.

    1. Getting my singles smooth fast and loose at all dynamic ranges.
    2. Playing live to a click with or without backing tracks, never needed to live but now I do. Need to discover the gear set up needed to do so and learn the software.
    3. Rudiments, both stationary and around the kit, with focus on practical applicational within a musical setting.
    4. Continue developing my heal up bass drum technique, been playing heal down for 25yrs convinced I need to develop heal up.
    5. Flow. Getting my playing to flow better when I have opportunity to let loose. I have always been so focused on groove, I can freeze when let loose.

Great video, inspired to get better in 2020!
1 - Weaker hand tends to move to next drum before the stroke is complete, as evidenced by the stripey marks across my Tom's. I need to go back to basics and train it to move after the rebound
2 - My reading and writing skills are basic at best. I've always played more by ear than learning something from a sheet.

Funny how my greatest weakness tie into my struggle getting back on a full kit instead of owning my rhythm on a djembe. My kindness is so great it's the ultimate sacrifice. Never feeling good enough despite doing everything and anything for any body. In giving my all I lose myself. The world shuts me down and I am very self depricating trying to make my name. Rudiments and practice practice are what I need I know but its so hard to flow without the presence of other souls and Instruments to express and communicate. My biggest flaws are my own insecurities.... Finally got a Roland e kit and ready to bounce back thnk you for the encouragement I will keep following up on your content as I need these roots I feel in my soul to reassure me.

Weaknesses.... HA! I’ll say.... EVERYTHING. Ive played most of my life and have learned enough to be able to play ok. I never learned to play correctly though. So.... I’m starting at the beginning with my singles. They’re harder than I thought but the more I practice your exercise the easier it gets. ROB... Thank you a ton for your dr tuning vids. SO HELPFUL 😎. I bought a pearl roadshow kit to practice on. My second kit. I can not justify spending anymore if I can’t play correctly at this point. I did get a decent Meinel dark cymbal package and still have some other paste dimensions that still sound okay. I’m 51 years old but I am forcing myself to start with learning the single stroke. Mainly on the practice pad. I could babble more but I mainly want to THANK YOU for your no nonsense approach man. You’re an inspiration. Maybe I’ll try tradition grip sometime. And yes... RIP Neal. Peace out man.

    Playing with dynamic control.

    Ghost notes

Tip #5 is the most important. If you don't visualize you doing what you want, you'll never make it. I was told about the visualization when I started training. The trainer told me to visualize myself with more strenght and weight loss. I didn't try at first. It was like he was joking. However, I started to visualize and after a few months I reached my goal.
    Now, getting to the weaknesses;
-Left side of the body (foot and hand)
    -Creativity
    -Time keeping without metronome

I'm a self-taught drummer and probably the number 1 thing that helped me the most was that I started playing with other musicians right off the bat.
And by right off the bat I mean that this was before I knew to hit the bass drum and crash cymbal at the same time. The second thing that helped me the
most was to play along to my favorite songs. I would make a cassette of my favorite jams and then play along with them. I'm talking stuff by Kiss, Alice Cooper,
Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Return to Forever, Billy Cobham. Granted, the stuff by Cobham, RTF and ELP was over my head but it forced me to push myself.
I did not know paradiddles so I did not practice those. I was blessed with a good set of ears though and I managed to figure some things out by ear. This was
long before the Internet and youtube. Another thing that helped was going to concerts and studying the drummers. All those cats were my teachers. I cannot stress
how important it is to play with other musicians early on. It's great if you can rock the world in your bedroom by yourself, but you need to be able to interact with other
musicians because ultimately, THAT is what it's all about. I hope the young cats today realize how lucky they are to have channels like this and all the free resources on
the internet. I no longer play but enjoy watching videos such as this. Thanks for all you do. Rob. I wish you were around when I started :-)

Hi Rob, Happy New Year! I love your channel and videos. I want to say so many good things about you and your channel, but it would be quite lengthy. As one commenter alluded "I always walk away a better musician after watching one of Robs videos". What really compelled me to comment is your tuning videos. I just love the simplicity and speed of the method. I thought every beginning drummer needs this so they can be musical ASAP, and Rob deserves credit. I figured I could make a business card and point people in Robs direction. It would be my little way of supporting the channel. And then I took the thought a little further. Why couldn't Rob design the card to his liking and offer them on his merch page. I would gladly buy them from you at a profit and distribute them knowing I was helping you and your channel. And I sure I'm not the only subscriber that feels this way.
Thank you! For all you do.

I am just starting to learn, and focusing only on keeping time, and after 2 months I still suck at it, like a lot, I accelerate for no apparent reason :D I keep working on it, every day.

Bit late to this but definitely my hands (still!), more consistent and more powerful doubles, faster and more controlled right foot, improved left foot hihat and BD pedal control, soloing. Loving the videos Rob!

Music sheet reading and the timing for the left foot (example: right hand plays 1/8 notes on ride, left hand plays ghost notes on snare, left foot opens the hi hat with 1/4 notes and Bassdrum plays what ever you want) I can do that I little bit but not perfect
PS: tip nr4 is really good because I play for 12 years everyday to my favourite songs(I’m 15) and my teacher says that this is the best way to practice

My biggest challenge for 2020 is to work on my improvisation skills. I know I could pick ideas from your 2019 program, but there is also a "psychological" aspect of it which might be the biggest part. I have a lot of troubles to keep it natural in front of musicians I don't really know or in front of an audience. I think the lack of confidence in my playing is locking my creativty and I can never end up satisfied with what I came up. I would like to be able to come up with more creative ideas and develop my "story "telling" in this kind of situation.
Big up Rob, you had such a positive influence on my playing and motivation, Keep it like this !

Thanks Rob. I would like to learn to better flow over the kit, rhythmically and dynamically. To be able to take rhythms and phrases and apply them to the kit more effectively.

Excellent video Rob. I think my weakness once again this year will be off hand doubles/triples as it has been for the last 25 years. Noticed you had a Saints jersey on... Pretty rough week. Thanks again for the vid.

Couple things I'm weak at: Rudiments, stopped doing them for a long time. Triplet fills, they sound quite awkward or rushed when I do them. Fill variety, Ghost notes, Left hand strength and speed to name a couple more.

Wwakness: my internal clock between 4-and and 1. It's where you come out of a fill and back to the groove, especially complex grooves.

I suck at pretty much everything, but this year I want to improve my right foot...getting control at singles and especially doubles. Tied into this would also be to make sure my hands and right foot foot and playing in sync, not flamming when they should be playing together.
