    This video has been a Godsend for me! Thank you, Dr. Hogg! You’ve given me hope after suffering with constant esophageal burning for the last three months. ACV and Aloe Vera juice have made an enormous difference. I’ll be seeing a Chiro who specializes in AK tomorrow. Thank you again for all you do!

    Dr. Hogg,
    I am a 30 year old female. I have been suffering from acid reflux as long as I can remember, 10 years+. It used to happen only a few times a year and mostly when I drank a lot of alcohol in my early 20's. I know have a fairly normal healthy diet. But now when I get my bouts they are INTENSE. I mean week long, no sleep, hard to go to work. I am now suffering from one of my bouts. I also feel my anxiety and lack of sleep play a role.
    I have seen doctors(no specialists) in the past and they insist its normal GERD and just want me to take the PPI's. I don't want to take those. Also, unfortunately, I do not have health insurance at the moment.
    I am not drinking anything but water and aloe vera. I am eating light meals. I am juicing with apples, celery, kale, garlic, ginger, turmeric, and apple cider vinegar.
    I am in so much pain. Sometimes the only relief I get is when I vomit at 3am and get some shut eye. I am desperate!
    I really enjoyed your video and feel like it has truth out there to the many false things I hear or read.
    I do feel like my anxiety increases my acid reflux, which increases my anxiety.
    I NEED HELP,
    Thank you for your time,
    Katie

      HI Katie. Sorry to hear you're having so much trouble. A major cause of GERD is diaphragm inhibition/weakness. The diaphragm is very responsive to your emotional state so I agree that your anxiety is probably a contributing factor. Unfortunately, the GERD discomfort is probably adding to your anxiety so it's a viscous circle! Have you tried taking apple cider vinegar when you're having a GERD attack? The response, (GERD gets better, worse, no change) would be useful diagnostically. Given the amount of trouble you're having, it might be useful to set up a phone consultation. You can call my clinic at 563.386.9494 to set up an appointment if you like. You can also email me at drhogg@drhogg.com

      Hello Dr. Hogg,
      This last week's terrible episode I was not taking apple cider vinegar when I was in major agony. I just couldn't bare to down that when I was in such pain. In hindsight I should have to help decide what was happening. However, I have taken in throughout the week daily and it does not intensify pain.
      Thank you for your response! I will call your office and make a phone consultation.

    Hi Dr. Hogg since January I’ve been having some issues with my throat (sore and a lot of mucus). In April the doctor found out I had a gastritis and GERD which caused all the troubles. Now I’m having troubles with eating because I can’t swallow and everything hurts. They prescribed me PPI but I don’t like taking them for several reasons
    1. I’m not able to take pills because I’m afraid of them
    2. They made me feel very sick.
    What can I do to heal fast? Good to mention I also have hyperventilation so I always take deep breaths. Is it possible for one to be allergic to Aloe Vera Juice?

    Dr Hogg I had shortness of breath, my stomach felt so tight and bloated I could barely walk. I eat small meal my tummy already feels full. my mid back hurts all the time. I feel like burping after I eat or drink but I cant. no vomiting tho. dry mouth and mild sore throat. I went to ER and was diagnosed with Gerd. was given 25 gram p meds. but before I went to ER I would lie on my back and felt like a huge worm moving through my stomach with pressure. could it have been gas. I was having hard time passing gas. If I have a hiatal hernia where would be the location of it, on abdomin wall. the ER dr didnt do any xray but felt my stomach while I sat down said I had no hernias. Im looking for a primary Dr or clinic with full service in San Antonio, Tx because I want a sonogram done too be sure I have no hiatal hernias. so from all the symptoms I described, do you think its acid or I need acid. I’ve been hearing tons about Betaine Hydrochloride supplements. Would you recommend these? I’m a brand new sufferer (and terrified because I’ve never experienced anything like this before. • @jimhogg

      Betaine HCl is often helpful. Try it and see how it affects your symptoms. Be sure to take it with meals. The underlying causes of GERD can be and are treated regularly by AK doctors. If you want to permanently get rid of the problem, and not take Betaine HCl the rest of your life, you'll want to get under care. Go to icakusa.com and click "find a doctor" at the top of the page. Look for one that has DIBAK or PAK after their name. Others can probably get the problem corrected too but the DIBAK is the highest level of knowledge and PAK is the next.

    • @jameshoggd.c.5047
      @jameshoggd.c.5047 6 лет назад +3

      Sinusitis is not usually caused by reflux but sinusitis may share some common cause with reflux. Reflux is often caused by low HCl production in the stomach resulting in loss of tone of the esophageal sphincter (valve at top of the stomach) allowing leakage from the stomach into the esophagus.
      Low HCl will often cause dysfunction of the ileocecal valve. This results in a situation where waste materials that should be on their way down the large intestine, instead staying in the small intestine where they get partially absorbed into the circulation. This creates a toxic condition that the body will try to remedy via elimination through the skin and mucous membranes like the sinuses.
      Fixing the HCl production will help with both reflux and sinus problems. You can try taking betain hydrocholoide supplements with your meals. Better yet, go to www.drhogg.com and type "dan tian" in the search box. This will lead you to a self help technique that will allow you to correct the HCl problem and the ileocecal valve problem. It's only a temporary fix but, if you follow the directions and do the technique 6x/day it should keep things under control.
      Let me know how it goes!
      Dr. Hogg

Some symptoms of too little stomach acid include: gas and bloat, fatigue after eating, rotten smelling/tasting burps, feeling that food is sitting in your stomach for hours and, sometimes getting hungry again soon after eating.

    • @jameshoggd.c.5047
      @jameshoggd.c.5047 5 лет назад

      The causes of LPR are similar to those of GERD, eg lack of sphincter/valve tone. This is often caused by low stomach acid since the esophageal sphincter tone increases as stomach acid increases and vice-versa. A sliding hiatal hernia is another common cause of losing sphincter tone. The suggestions I made in my video can help with both of these causes. What have you tried so far?

      Hi Johan. I don't blame you for not wanting to take PPIs the rest of your life. There are several scary side effects of long-term use. It's very likely that care from an Applied Kinesiology doctor can treat the actual cause of your acid reflux. Considering the complexity of your case it may take 6-12 months of care to repair the damage but it's likely to be successful. You can also try betain HCL. One of the causes of reflux and gastritis is *low* HCl causing digestive problems. To find someone to help you, go to icakusa.com and click on "find a doctor".

      It sounds like maybe you have a different digestive problem. It could be an illeocecal valve (ICV) problem which can cause the body to excrete toxins through the mucus membranes like the throat, sinuses and lungs. If you've tried the suggestions for hiatal hernia with no results, check my video on the Dan Tien technique which you can use to treat the ICV.

    What can you do about acid reflux when you have gerd episodes on an empty stomach? My first gerd episode of the day is usually as I wake up, before I've had anything to eat and drink.
    Ironically, fatty meals can make me feel BETTER instead of worse if I eat while experiencing heartburn.
    I do not have hiatal hernia but I've been diagnosed with a weak LES that can fit two scopes. PH test confirmed that I reflux on an empty stomach most of the time. However, LES pressure was normal during my manometry. I'm at a loss. PPI's make me miserable and my B12 levels plummet on the drug, leaving me dizzy and weak after only a couple of months on this terrible drug. I did have esophagitis the first time I was scoped, but it's gone now.

    • @jimhogg
      @jimhogg  6 лет назад +2

      Shortness of breath is not exactly a symptom of GERD. A common cause of GERD is a sliding hiatal hernia which is caused by diaphragm weakness. Poor diaphragm function will limit your lung capacity by about 1/3, make getting a deep breath difficult and make you short of breath when exercising.

    Lose the belly fat (stomach needs room to work), never overstretch your stomach with food or drink (weakens the cardiac sphincter), wait at least 4 hours between solid foods (stomach needs to completely empty between solids), Chew, chew, chew (the more you liquefy solids, the quicker they leave the stomach). These 4 things will eliminate 75% of reflux/indigestion and are beneficial even if you have a more serious cause.

    Hello.
    I've been having issues for the...I'd say about 8 months. I would rather often find myself gagging, just that feeling before wanting to puke. And sometimes I actually would puke (Usually after eating). It would come and go throughout the months. For a while, I kept feeling nauseous rather constantly, after eating especially. I went to a doctor about it and she prescriped some medicine (forgot the name) for acid reflux. In any case, I stopped taking it at some point. Then about a week ago, I started having awful shooting pains in the middle of my chest, accompanied with tightness/pressure throughout my chest and sometimes focusing on slightly lower middle part of my chest. It hasn't gone away since, it's been mostly pressure. It comes and goes. Wakes me up at night as well. I went to a doctor about it, and he checked my heart and got an x-ray of my chest and things are fine. So I'm thinking it might be acid reflux but I'm not sure. What do you think?

    • @jimhogg
      @jimhogg  6 лет назад +2

      Glad you had your heart checked. Hiatal hernia, one of the common causes of acid reflux, can cause symptoms similar to a heart attack. The nausea after eating (within the first 40 minutes) can be due to low HCl in the stomach. Of curse, it can also be due to a hiatal hernia. Have you tried the suggestions in my video. The results (or lack thereof) may be useful diagnostically.

    Hello doctor, I am from India, I really liked your video, i am facing this issue since 3 months, & right now i am on ppi, & elevated bed sleep, i am sleeping well but always have dry throat & hoarseness in my voice, i have shown to three different Ent specialist, none of them helped, i have shown to Gastroenterologist, who did my endoscopy & said i have inflamed lining in stomach & tiny superficial ulcers in my dudeonium, small intestine i guess as per report, they already did my biopsy but it was negative for H pylori. I had heartburn for just a week like a month ago & i don't have it anymore, also doctor said i do not have any hital hernia, i am also very thin. My main issue is in throat, i researched a lot & my symptoms are of silent reflux, burning sometimes in throat, hoarseness in my voice, sometimes also feeling of dryness & something stuck in my throat, i am already on 40mg ppi & antacids since one month, & don't seem to feel much improvement. I work on a cruise ship & my joining is in few days, I don't know whether should i continue with ppi & antacids or try natural treatment..I would really appreciate if you take few minutes of your precious time & reply. Thanks Again..

      Since the PPI drugs aren't making much difference in your symptoms, I strongly suggest you try something else. There are a number of serious long-term side effects of PPI use. The problem with using an upper GI to diagnose a hiatal hernia is that it will only be positive if the stomach happens to be up through the diaphragm at the time of the exam. A "sliding" haital hernia is called that because it will slide up sometimes and down at others. A negative upper GI test does not rule out a hiatal hernia.
      I would suggest you try taking some Betain hydrochloride (1 or 2 pills) with each meal for a day or two and see if that helps your symptoms.

    Dr Hogg,when you say to rub the chest area do you rub away from the heart , I am curious because I have always heard to rub away from the direction of the heart when applying lotions etc. I know that probably sounds like a silly question. Also I started taking the ACV today and stopped my prevacid ..so far I have a slight burn but tolerable,I was wondering if you could take too much ACV ? What do you think of taking probiotics and Kefir ..is it something that would help gerd or make it worse in your opinion ? Thank You for this video,I found it to be very helpful in understanding gerd ! I have suffered with it for at least 15 years and been on prevacid for it for as long. I am really concerned with how long my doctor has left me on it and she really doesn't do any kind of follow up on my symptoms. I am trying to be proactive now.

    • @jimhogg
      @jimhogg  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Betty,
      You've made a good start. Unfortunately, most MDs do exactly what yours did. They put their patient on a PPI forever and figure they've done their job. Unfortunately, as you probably know there can be serious, sometimes fatal, side effects from long-term use of PPIs like prevacid which does nothing toward treating the actual cause of GERD.
      Rubbing the sternum (aka breastbone) helps to improve diaphragm function which helps control leakage into the esophagus of stomach acid. It makes no difference what direction you rub. Just rub firmly all along the sternum for about 60 seconds every day.
      Probiotics and Kefir will not hurt and may help. Don't go crazy with the ACV. 1-2 tbs with each meal should be enough.
      Dr. Hogg

      Thank You so much for your reply Dr Hogg. I was wondering , can I reverse the negative effects from being on this drug for so long ? ( at least 15 years ) ans also can you heal your esophagus once it is damaged from the acid ?

    • @jimhogg
      @jimhogg  6 лет назад +1

      Many of the negative effects can be reversed. To help with this it will be good to take Betaine HCl with your meals. This replaces the stomach acid that has been missing for 15 years. "Now" brand makes a good OTC version. If ACV helps, the Betaine HCl will help more. The aloe vera juice (use Lily of the Dessert brand) will help heal your esophagus. If there is a lot of scar tissue, the aloe vera alone may not be enough but try it and see. Both healing processes will likely take from 1-2 years for maximum healing but every day will be a small step in that healing. BTW, you need protein to heal your esophagus, the absorption of which was being interfered with by the prevacid.
      Good luck and let me know how you're doing.
      Dr. Hogg

      Thank You for your reply Dr Hogg. I am feeling bummed today because the heartburn is back and I am trying to tolerate it. I had a pretty good day yesterday only having to take 2 tums last night at 11 pm. Already today I have taken 4 by 2. I am watching my diet pretty closely but it seems like even water triggers it. I know its only day 2, and I need to give it time but I am so afraid that the burning will do even more damage to my esophagus. my prevacid is capsule so I can't even take only a half one to break down the dose..I may have to take a zantac. I was wondering what do you think of the surgery to fix the valve so it will close again ? So sorry for all the questions. I have so many of them.

    • @jimhogg
      @jimhogg  6 лет назад

      Surgery is not a good idea for the valve and should always be a last resort. You may want to try tapering off prevacid. Start by taking it every other day. After a week, if things are going well, try going just every third day for a week or so and then try stopping altogether. Have you tried taking 1/4 cup ACV in 1/2 cup of water when you're having a heartburn episode? You could also try 1/4 to 1/2 cup of aloe when the heartburn is present.
      As I said surgery is not a great idea because your valve is probably not deformed and surgery could actually make things worse....permanently. If you need more help, you can find a doctor trained in treating GERD without drugs or surgery by going to www.icakusa.com and clicking "find a doctor" at the top of the page. If you tell me who is close enough (set the search for at least 50 miles) I can tell you if I know them.

    Hi doctor Hogg. I live in Toronto so i m guessing you live in U.S or not in my area. I am 30 years old and have been suffering majorly from GERD or chronic heartburn for like 10 years now. I have been taking pantoprazole for about 7 years now. If i dont take it first thing in the morning i will have big problems later in the day but i don't want to take it anymore because i fear that its not helping me in the long run and surely it hasn't. I m tired of watching what i eat and what to eat or drink there for i don't know what to do anymore to stop this acid that is producing in my stomach. I been for a endoscope test and they couldn't help me very much. So i m thinking of surgery or any other alternative to make this go away forever if that's even possible. What can i do doctor??

    • @jameshogg4760
      @jameshogg4760 6 лет назад

      I agree that you don't want to stay on a PPI for the rest of your life, which may end up being shorter than it should as a result of taking the drug. The endoscope test can't really rule out a hiatal hernia. A positive test is significant but not a negative test because the stomach can slide up and down through the esophageal hiatus of the diaphragm. You should be able to find a well trained applied kinesiology doc in the Toronto area. You can go to icak.com, click on the Canadian chapter link and look for docs in the area at that site.'ve treated dozens of patients with symptoms similar to yours with good results.

      I'm not sure what your thought process is regarding citrulline malate (CR) but CR does not increase stomach acidity, which is the purpose of apple cider vinegar. To little stomach acid causes the valve at the top of the stomach to loosen, contributing to reflux. As an alternative, you could buy some Betain hydrochloride and take one with each meal to see how it affects your symptoms.

      Try following the suggestions on the video for GERD. It's possible the excess saliva is caused by mild reflux. Also try using some baking soda mixed in water as a mouthwash (don't swallow it). I underwent a complete physical which included a full abdominal ultrasound, Chest X ray, Blood Urine and stool tests and also heart enzyme tests. The results showed that I had fatty liver, Urine and Stool tests were completely normal with no parasites or H pylori in my stool tests. A stool culture was normal. The belching suggests that bacteria are feeding on what you're not digesting. Humans don't produce gas as part of our digestive process, it's from bacterial activity. The aloe vera may help with the lump but not the belching. Its likely the nexium will make the belching worse since the purpose of all PPis is to interfere with normal acid production in the stomach which is needed for your to digest your food and not feed bacteria.
      The acv helps with this by giving a little weak acid but it may not be enough. I suggest you find a Betaine HCl supplement from a good company and try taking it with your meals. Start with 1/meal and increase every day by 1/meal until you get the best result. EG, if you are up to 3/meal with good results, decreased belching and going to 4/meal and no better, go back to 3.

    • @VitaminJ7734

    • @jimhogg
      @jimhogg  6 лет назад

      The gas production is not due to a high bacteria count necessarily. It's more likely due to the fact that you aren't digesting your food properly. What you don't digest provides food for bacteria who produce gas as part of their digestive process. The fix for this is to improve your digestion. You can try taking some Betain Hydrochloride with each meal or find a qualified AK doctor in your area to fix your digestion

      Good question. Keep in mind that this family of drugs has shown to cause increased risk of anemia, osteoporosis, dementia, kidney disease, cardiovascular disease and stomach cancer if used for a prolonged time. Have you tried taking apple cider vinegar? It's a good test when you're having a reflux attack. If it makes the symptoms worse, it could mean that you have too much acid (HCl) in your stomach (unlikely) or that your esophagus is so irritated from the reflux that the vinegar is burning the raw tissue. If it does not make symptoms worse or even makes them better (fairly common) it means that that you definitely *don't* have too much HCl and the medication, which may hide the symptoms, is probably making the actual cause worse.
      If you have a hiatal hernia, which is much more common than most people think, your best bet is to find a doctor who is certified in applied kinesiology and knows how to treat both the hiatal hernia and balance your HCl. Where do you live?

      Aloe vera juice will help the esophagus heal. Take 2 tbs after each meal. If taking ACV made no change then your problem is probably not too much HCl.
      With the red spots in the esophagus, you definitely need some immediate help. I strongly suggest you find a doctor who can deal with the actual cause of your reflux. . It's possible you may need the drug temporarily to speed up the esophageal healing but you want to get the cause corrected and get off the drug asap. Fortunately, there are a number of good AK doctors in Las Vegas. Go to icakusa.com, click
      "find a doctor" and type in Las Vegas on the doctor page. Look for doctors with "PAK" and especially "DIBAK" after their name

      If finishing the treatment means taking the drugs for a week or two, it's not going to do much harm. There's a slight chance you may clear the symptoms from taking the drugs for a short time so it's worth trying. What you don't want to do is stay on the drugs for months or years.

    • @jameshogg4760
      @jameshogg4760 6 лет назад

      A common cause of constipation, slow digestion, gas and bloat is low stomach acid production. This can be caused by cranial issues that may be a result of birth trauma which would explain why it has been such a long-term problem for you. The fact that PPI drugs don't help supports this theory. You might want to try taking some Betain hydrochloride pills with each meal. Start with with 1/meal and, if no results, try increasing by 1/meal up to a total of 4. If it helps, then you know what the problem is. The cranial problem can be addressed by a trained applied kinesiology doc that you can find at icakusa.com if you live in the USA or icak.com if you live in another country.

      The typical medical approach to this problem, using drugs to treat the *symptoms* is not particularly effective in the long run because it does nothing to address the actual cause. In your brother's case, it sounds like he's not even getting short term symptom relief. The tone of the lower esophageal sphincter is strongly affected by the level of acidity in the stomach. More acid = tighter valve contraction. To little acid = sphincter laxity. Have your brother try taking 2 TBS apple cider vinegar with each meal in a little water to increase acidity. He might also want to try taking 2 TBS ACV or a little more when he have a heartburn attack. This is not an ultimate solution but gets closer to treating the actual cause than the drugs with no side-effects. It's useful diagnostically too. Let me know whether he feels, better, worse or no change with the ACV.

    • @jameshogg4760
      @jameshogg4760 6 лет назад

      If the ACV caused immediate pain, it could be because of esophagus irritation from the heartburn. You might want to try taking Betain hydrochloride capsules with meals instead. These won't dissolve until they get to your stomach and so won't immediately irritate your raw esophagus. Start with one pill/meal. Try for 2-3 meals. If you notice symptoms increase, stop taking them and find an AK doctor in your area.

      A lot of functional doctors tell their patients to take Betaine HCL pills to increase stomach acid, because heartburn is actually lack of stomach acid and not an excess. If that is the case, PPIs only make it worse not better because they do the OPPOSITE of what you need. If that doesn't work, you might want to get checked for a Hiatus Hernia. There are some exercises for Hernia which could provide a lot relief and possibly cure the hernia as well. Other reasons could be an Ulcer which gets irritated all the time by the food you eat. In that case you need to find the cause for the Ulcer (eg. H.Pylori infection) and take some DGL Licorice and Slippery Elm to soothe and heal it. DGL Licorice also should suppress the bacterial infection (although you'd better create a more aggressive protocol for such an infection). And finally, if all this does not help you might want to get checked for SIBO/Fungal Overgrowth/Gut Dysbiosis. That's the stuff I've discovered these last 3 years. I hope it can give you a better idea on what to do.

    • @jimhogg
      @jimhogg  6 лет назад +3

      Burping and throat clearing may be related more to low stomach hydrochloric acid production than a hiatal hernia. The low HCl will loosen the sphincter at the top of the stomach and allow leaking of the weaker (but still too acidic for the esophagus) acid into the esophagus. Gas production is usually the result of bacteria digesting the food we don't digest because of low HCl, as well a a few other causes.

    • @jimhogg
      @jimhogg  6 лет назад

      It's not uncommon for people with reflux to inhale some of the fluid, resulting in lung problems, phlegm, coughing etc. The burning throat is probably also from acid reflux. Your neck pain can be a result of coughing. On the other hand, the nerve supply for the diaphragm comes from the area of the 3rd, 4th and 5th cervical vertebrae in the neck. If there is a misalignment in any of those 3 vertebrae, it can cause poor diaphragm tone, a loosening of the esophageal sphincter resulting in reflux.
      Your case sounds complex enough that the suggestions in my video, while they may help, may not be enough to resolve your problem. • @jameshoggd.c.5047
      @jameshoggd.c.5047 6 лет назад

      Unfortunately, ranititine doesn't really correct the problem, just minimizes symptoms. The two primary causes I see for acid reflux are both related to esophageal sphincter laxity. This may be caused by diaphragm weakness that allows the stomach to slide up through the esophageal hiatus of the diaphragm, creating a sliding hiatal hernia. This compromizes the esophageal sphincter, the valve at the top of the stomach, allowing the stomach contents to reflux into the esophagus.
      The second common cause I see is ironically, *low* stomach acid. The esophageal sphincter tone is linked to stomach acidity levels. More acid = tighter valve = less reflux. Less acid = looser valve = more reflux. Proton Pump inhibitors lower stomach acid. As a result, there is usually more sphincter leakage but it doesn't burn because it's non-acidic.
      Gave some tips on the video about working with the hiatal hernia at home. If you could find an AK doc in your area that would be better. Try going to www.icak.org. You can also try taking 1-2 betain hydrochloride pills with each meal

      The aloe juice from Lilly of the Dessert can help. You might also want to try deglycerized licorice. Making sure you're relaxed while eating (not rushing, watching exciting or annoying TV) is important for the mucus production in your stomach that protects the tissue there. There is sometimes a bacterial infection that must be dealt with. Aloe is both healing for the tissues and has mild anti-bacterial effect so may help in a couple of ways.

    • @jimhogg
      @jimhogg  6 лет назад +1

      For an ulcer, yes. Apple cider vinegar *might* help but it's very likely the right brand of Aloe will. They do very different things. If you find an AK doctor, they can evaluate whether you have low stomach acid. Unless you do have low stomach acid, the ACV will not help and it might irritate the ulcer. BTW, low stomach acid makes you more susceptible to developing the bacterial infection that is one cause of stomach ulcers.

      Many people find the aloe juice helps. Are you taking any medication for the heartburn? Hopefully not because there are all kinds of nasty side effects of long term use. Since the ACV didn't make symptoms worse, try taking 1 tbs with each meal with just enough water to make it palatable (no more than 1/2 C water). Often heartburn is caused by stomach acid that is too low, causing the valve at the top of the stomach to be too lax and leaky.
