I am also a new freeze dryer. I took a trip to Hobby Lobby and in the cake decorating department I purchased silicone molds to freeze my portions, It works wonderfully. I also used whole milk in my cereal which I put into my molds. after freezing i remove the frozen product from the mold and place it on the freeze drying tray. It makes a cereal bar or a breakfast bar of eggs and veggies. Really enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for watching. That is awesome that you have a freeze dryer too. Hopefully you are having as much fun with it as we are. My wife bought some similar molds too. We will be using them to portion out soups. We will try freeze drying them on future videos. We hope they will be great for trail meals. Right now we are like on our 30th batch of apples. LOL. So many from the tree this year. Sounds like you have some great ideas for meals and snacks too. I'll need to try doing our own milk next time instead of the store bought dry milk. Sounds like you have a great idea for doing it. Thanks again. Have a wonderful day.
Thanks. I'm headed on a week long hiking trip next week and these meals will be my breakfasts on the trail. I'm glad that the meal making worked great. This should save me money being able to make own. Thanks for watching. Have a great day.
Homemade freeze-dried meals are much better than those store-bought dehydrated meals. Thanks for showing us the whole process. Have a great week Steve.
Thanks for watching. I should be able to cater the meals the way that I like them this way for recipe and portions. Glad you enjoyed seeing the process. Have a great day.
Hi Steve I love seeing the end result of what you freeze dry . That machine is such a great invention and it means you can have total healthy meals while you are out . Thanks for sharing :) Have a great week :)
Thanks Anna. The freeze drying process is super interesting and amazing. I will continue to experiment with making meal options for when we are backpacking. Thanks for watching. Have a wonderful day.
Thank you. They all turned out great. Can't wait to try them while backpacking this next week. Thanks for watching. Glad you liked the video. Have a great day.
Thanks for watching. Yes, nothing scientific with me either. Just give it a try you never know how good it will turn out. Thanks again and have a wonderful day.
Thank you. The meal options for the backcountry via freeze dryer are many. Plus you can make the meals just the way you like them or need them for dietary reasons. Thanks for watching. Have a wonderful day.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Yes the mylar bags we purchased on Amazon. They are "GooGou Resealable Zip Mylar 6.3"x9.4" Bags. We use them for everything we store short term. For long term storage we use the mason jars or heavy duty mylar bags that are heat sealed. Hope this helps. Have a great day.
Thanks Thomas. If I can get continued success with these meals, I'll be able to save a bunch of money on backpacking foods. Customized meals too. Have a great day.
Great meal ideas! I have to say, it never occurred to me to recycle my Mountain House packets. Thanks for the reminder! I'll be packing these for long term food storage!
Thanks Sandy. Yes, we reuse the Mylar bags for preparation of the food only. We store them in the normal manner. Glad you liked the meal ideas. I'll be using these on my next 8 day off trail trip next week. Hoping they work great. If so, I will do these from now on. Have a wonderful day.
Thanks Jason. I'll be taking these on the Highline Trail next week. So excited. The meals turned out really good. Dehydrated breakfasts my way. They were yummy. Heck yeah. Have a great day.
Oh Yeah! Those looked great. "Steve's High Mtn Pantry" I can already see them being ordered. It'll be fun to see them used in the next couple of videos.
Thanks Stacy. Maybe someday I could perfect some meals for market. For now, trial runs with me. So far so good on this batch. I'll be taking these for field trial on my 8 day trip to the backcountry of the Uintas. Those backcountry lakes are yelling my name. Come on brookies! LOL. Have a great day.
Well done Steve, you did very well freeze drying these breakfasts. I find these videos fascinating, loved watching and listening to the whole process 😊 must save you lots of money doing this yourself 😊 great video
Thanks, Stephen. Glad you enjoyed it. I'm really hopeful the meals work great while backpacking. The freeze drying process is pretty cool. I'm still amazed. I'm hoping to save money by making my own. It looks hopeful so far. Have a great day.

Thanks Melissa. These turned out great. Just the way I wanted them. Trial run at the house worked. I hope they work for me on the trail next week otherwise I'm going to be on a weight loss plan! LOL. Have a great day.
Man, Steve, you were making me salivate here... watching the process and you adding the milk (it was good to see your dog pass by too) and all that, it made me really hungry. I love your kitchen too. The grits will be awesome too. And the eggs, YUM. That breakfast burrito will be so tasty out on trail, that sealer does a great job sealing the bags
Thanks Nicole. Glad you enjoyed it. Hannah was trolling for kitchen scraps! LOL. Glad you liked our kitchen. It fits our needs better now that it has been remodeled. Everything turned out great in the experiment. Now it is time to take them on the Highline trail this month and do field testing! Crossing my fingers. If it doesn't work, I better be good at catching fish. LOL. Have a great day.
On this episode of ''In the kitchen with Kitchen'',LOl! Man you did an awesome job my friend. You'll be eating good on the trail for sure!! Viva Coke Zero!
Thanks Alex. The meals turned out great and will be used on my next multiday adventure! There are still lots of uses for the dehydrator. Dried fruit or jerky for the trail. Heck Yeah. Have a great day.
Thanks for watching. Yes, these breakfast meals turned out great for having on the trail while backpacking. Options are nearly limitless with the freeze dryer too. We have been having a great time using and experimenting with it. If you get one, I hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Have a great day
Those eggs looked so good, Steve. I wouldn't have had the discipline to leave any to freeze dry. Looks like they all turned out great. "It didn't rhyme, but it's still funny" hahaha
Thanks John. The eggs turned out great. I don't even care for eggs that much but these were good. LOL Dad joke! All the meals turned out great. Time for trying them on the Highline. I'll let you know if they are a success once again. Have a nice day.
Thanks Casey. It all turned out pretty good. Going on the trail with it next week. Time for some backcountry fishing 8 days in a row. Heck Yeah! Hope all is well with you. Have a wonderful day.
Amazing! You are going to put these other companies out of business! lol You need an Otis to taste test for you... I knew the oatmeal would be good, but it is the grits that really interest me. Winner!! Always love your experimenting. Let the adventuring begin...Bruce and Otis
Thanks Bruce. I don't know about putting the companies out of business but maybe I could start my own. Lol. All the meals turned out great. So glad the experiments worked this time. Just like fishing you need to keep trying until you get one. Lol Have a great day.
Wow everything looks great! I'm in the experimenting phase just got my FD, I also wondered if you needed to FD granola that looked so good! I can't wait to make it! thanks for sharing!
Thank you. Awesome that you just got yours too. We've had ours a little over a year now and use it all the time. Still experiencing with different foods too. I'm not sure of the need to FD granola but I figured it would remove any trace of moisture, if it had any in it. Just being on the safe side. Good luck with your experiments. Have a great day.
Thanks Sandra. The meals are expensive and pretty good. Being able to make them myself will certainly let me customize them and save money. Thanks for watching. Have a great day.
I failed my first day of the High Line trail. Was starting solo from Chapeta and ran smack into altitude sickness on the first pass. I recall your wife struggling with that too, but she went on to finish. I'd love to see a video of her explaining how she felt, and what worked for her to get her through. Once I turned back and dropped down a bit, the nausea went away. I might have been ok had I just got over the pass and dropping to a lower altitude on the other side. I guess I wasn’t prepared to risk it. The next day at home, I realized I wasn’t as physically prepared as I needed to be. Lots of sore leg muscles. I’ll be hitting the gym and doing more high-altitude preparation hikes earlier in the year to test my tolerance for such things. I might also start towards the end of July. There was so much water up there. I’ll give it another go next year. Thanks for your example.
Great job on your attempt. Think of it as a practice run instead of a failure. There is no such thing as a failure, just one step closer to completion for your next try. However many tries it takes. Well done. That altitude is a real thing. I always cross my fingers the first day on the trail. You are correct, above 10K Kristy did start having the affects. Severe fatigue, nausea, headache, & the onset of the runs. Once she descended into the next valley she started feeling better but it took her another day to fully rid of the affects. Almost always a drop in elevation fixes it quick. It also helps if you stay at the TH for a day or two to help acclimate. You never know how altitude will affect you until you try. I am heading up there again for round 3 of the HL next weekend. The trail will find those muscles you did not know you had! All you can do is prepare the best you can, and try try again.
Awesome, I can't wait to watch your report. Your previous videos were amazing and a big part of why I want to hike this trail. With all the lightweight food, I suspect you'll be able to carry a 6-pack of Diet Coke.
@@markfoy7984 Thanks Mark. I'm happy that you were inspired. Pursue your passion. I might just be a little lighter on the trail this time I'm really hoping under 55 lbs with my Coke Zero needs! LOL.
You definitely know how to be organized for your next trip for sure Steve 👍 awesome looking meals 😋 The packaging looks unbelievable too so you should make a trip to tv show shark thank buddy 🙂⚓️🙏
Thanks Gary. Shark Tank here I come! LOL. Thanks so much for the kindness. The experiment went well. The food was delicious. I'll be field testing on the mountain later this month with my backcountry fishing trip. If the food doesn't work, I'll need to be catching and eating the fish instead of releasing them. Heck Yeah. Backup plan. Take care and have a great day.
@@Packsalot I’m sure the food will work perfect Steve 🙂but catching and eating the fish for dinner will be fantastic too brother 👍 good luck , can’t wait to see those videos ⚓️🙏
I do butter and cinnaman and sugar! Buy yourself some dividers 😊 Did you set to -10? If it went back in freeze mode i thought it would have moisture and you should not store like that?
Thanks. That sounds amazing also. I'm not sure about the setting. I just use the factory preset. I did not know that the temp could be modified. These turned out great for the upcoming adventure I had. Not sure about long term storage though. I would likely store it differently if I needed shelf life. Thanks for watching. Have a wonderful day.
Thank you. It was fun preparing some meals for the backpacking trip. They turned out great and we will certainly be doing them again. Thanks for watching. Have a great day.
Just watched your video. All the food looks great but those eggs! on the tortilla with sauce! Oh My. Could you add the sauce to the eggs at the end of cooking?
Thank you very much for watching and commenting. Yes, you certainly could add the hot sauce to the eggs before freeze drying. That is a good idea to not need to worry about bringing the little packet of sauce. The packets are small enough though and preserved not to spoil already so I did not try it this time. Maybe on my next batch I'll try that again. These meals worked great while on backpacking trip and I will surely be doing them again for future trips. Thanks again. Have a great day.
Other than the sugar with a bit of grits added that looked good. I usually don't even bother with an oxygen absorber when vacuum sealing, but i don't have any long lerm results on that yet.
Thanks for watching. Yep, sweeter the better for me. LOL. Same on the absorber but I did this time. So far so good on sealing freeze dried foods in sealed mason jars without absorbers too. Works great! Have a wonderful day.
@@FatemaYousef-h7q I used a freeze dryer machine. It runs a cycle at like 40 below zero as part of its process before it expects all the moisture content. I have not tried this with an air fryer. Hope this helps clarify. Have a great day.
@@Packsalot thank you for replying. I have a harvest freeze dryer and I am new at this and I am confused about the setting. What temperature do I put and for how many hours. Appreciate your help.
@@FatemaYousef-h7q I didn't know there was such a custom setting. I just put the trays in, hit the start button, and follow the prompts on screen. Then depending on what your freeze drying, the process time to completionisr anywhere from 7 to 30 hours.
The pump oil level varies from batch to batch. I try to keep it at the midpoint. During or after a batch it will fluctuate slightly. Thanks for watching and the comment. Have a wonderful day.
Nothing can go wrong with bacon bits and cheese. Yes, chef should try before it goes to freeze dryer. Ah, I learnt your trick to poke the blueberries before we freeze it, so thank you!
Thanks for watching! Yep, cheese and bacon bits are delicious! Glad you learned a new trick. Always need to try it. Yummy too. Take care and have a great day.
looks good, I will now have to try. this If I could recommend, if your trays are cold, always warm them before removing them from freeze dryer. This way you will not have condensation drawn to your food. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching and commenting. These meals turned out great on the trail. I'll be doing this again for future trips for sure. Yes, we have noticed that too about the cold and condensate. Thanks for the tip. Have a wonderful day.
Thanks for watching and for the comment. We decided to go with the medium sized freeze dryer. It holds the 4 trays as shown in the video and does well for most of what we like to freeze dry. We have not freeze dried any milk yet. I just used store bought dry milk this time. Also, all the prepared meals were used while backpacking last month and they all turned out great. I'll be doing these again. Take care and have a great day.
Well now I'm curious if anyone will comment and tell you that you should clean those off before you use them. Kristy, add bacon bits to the grocery list aaaaahahaha! Looks so darn good. Might have to whip some of this up with my fake eggs. I've got some instant grits in my cabinet. Oh the way you like them. Yeah, they're just plain. I got them cuz I never tried them. I just used butter. It was fine. Think I'd probably like them better with cinnamon and brown sugar too. They remind me of malt o meal. Is malt o meal grits? I need to google that. BRB. Nope not the same I guess. Malt o meal is made from barley, cream of wheat from... well... wheat, of course, and grits from corn. So they are all different. Interesting. Wow 17 hours. I can't get over how long it takes for things to freeze dry. Haha those grits look like styrofoam. Sounds like a good idea to me to add the dry milk to the granola. So cool that the granola and grits worked. I'm sure your eggs will work too. That's gotta be a bit of a money saver to do it yourself rather than to always buy the meals from the store. Heck yeah! breakfast burrito. That was fun to watch. Glad they were all a success.
Thanks Felix. Well, if you watch real close you see that I reached in the bowl right after cracking it open to retrieve a piece of poo! LOL. Bacon bits are on the list! Hahaha. I like my grits sweet like most things. Sugar makes me happy! The process does take awhile to get every last bit of moisture out of the food but when it is done the food will last for 20+ years if stored properly. All the food actually turned out great this time. Time to start saving some money on those backpacking meals now that everything was a success in the experiment. Thanks for watching. Take care.

Heck, ya good video
I like the activities you do. very entertaining. I'm from Indonesia, greetings and waiting for your return
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video. The freeze drying process is pretty interesting. Take care and have a wonderful day.
Awesome! I never had grits with brown sugar.
Thanks John. Grits and brown sugar with cinnamon is really good! Have a great day.
@@Packsalot I like grits with butter, salt, cheese, and topped with a over easy egg.
What’s the Dry temp did you use? And for how long ? Thank you
@@FatemaYousef-h7q I used a freeze dryer machine.
@@Packsalot I have seen several creators use different settings for different food. That’s why I asked
@@FatemaYousef-h7q Interesting, I'd have to look at the instruction manual. I never knew there was such a setting.
Do you have your pump oil on the max level?
The pump oil level varies from batch to batch. I try to keep it at the midpoint. During or after a batch it will fluctuate slightly. Thanks for watching and the comment. Have a wonderful day.
Nothing can go wrong with bacon bits and cheese. Yes, chef should try before it goes to freeze dryer. Ah, I learnt your trick to poke the blueberries before we freeze it, so thank you!
Thanks for watching! Yep, cheese and bacon bits are delicious! Glad you learned a new trick. Always need to try it. Yummy too. Take care and have a great day.
Good video
Thanks. Take care.
looks good, I will now have to try. this If I could recommend, if your trays are cold, always warm them before removing them from freeze dryer. This way you will not have condensation drawn to your food. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching and commenting. These meals turned out great on the trail. I'll be doing this again for future trips for sure. Yes, we have noticed that too about the cold and condensate. Thanks for the tip. Have a wonderful day.
i think i would also try to make my own too
Thanks for watching. They all turned out great. Good luck on yours. You can make it they you like it too. So awesome. Take care.
Wow nice one full support ❤️ idol
Thank you! Have a nice day.
What size is your freeze dryer? Have you experimented with freezing your own whole milk? Thanks for the video. Very inspiring.
Take care and have a great day.
wow wow nice vlogs
Thank you. Glad you liked the video. Take care.
Hello packs my friend💖💖🌹
Hello. Thanks for watching. Have a nice day.
Great video guys looks yummy 😋 just found your channel very good we will check out your other video too new subscriber 👍
Awesome! Thank you! These meals turned out great. I will be using these on my next backpacking adventure. Thanks for watching. Have a wonderful day.
Take care.
if you gad put those blue berries in a food processor and just pilse once or twice would have worked better.
Awesome. Thanks for watching. That sounds like a pretty good idea and a time saver for sure. Take care and have a wonderful day.
Hi, I Watched your full video and I think ❣️❣️ this is huge potential work . My wishes for you get huge success in your future 👍🔥👌❣️👏🍓🍉🍎🍅🍇🍒🥑 Amazing🥑🍒🍇🍅🍎🍉🍓
Thank you very much. These recipes turned out great and worked in the freeze dryer and trial run. I can't wait to test it again. Should be a big money saver for backpacking meals. Thanks for watching. Have a wonderful day.
I saw that you used store boughten powdered milk. YUCK! Freeze dried whole milk you make yourself is amazing. This video is 10 months ago, so you probably already have done this. 😊
Thanks for watching. Yes, indeed. We have freeze dried our own milk since. These meals have turned out great for our backpacking trips. Thanks for the tip. Have a great day.
