- Update; We have been having so much fun with this we are going to continue to post videos in this playlist of our many experiments. Thanks for watching!
Ever since we got into hiking & backpacking more seriously, Kristy has been wanting a freeze dryer. With dehydrated backpacking meals & snacks in mind, we also wanted the ability to make our own freeze dried foods for the trail. I purchased the medium sized Harvest Right freeze dryer for Kristy for Christmas. It came early so she couldn't resist. She has been running batches every day since. We also cover some of the essential operations of running a batch in the freeze dryer.
We have been experimenting will all kinds of foods and plenty of candy. We found some winners and found some Fails too. Most of our experiments that we have tried so far are mentioned in this video. We found some favorites for sure.
With freeze dried foods being less weight I might just become packs-a-lot....less! Enjoy!

Christy got a new toy for Christmas. Why didn't you get her a vacuum cleaner too. Lol Packs a little less, that's to funny Steven. Looks like a time consuming process Steven. Gee I just checked the price of that freeze dryer wow. I think I'll get my wife a diamond 💎 ring instead. 😇
Thank you John. Vacuum cleaners "suck"! 😂 I'm hoping I can trim down some of my food item weights by freeze drying them. It is time consuming but mostly the freeze dryer does not need attending to once you load it with food. Simply load your food then find something to do for like 20 hrs. Like go on a hike! 👍😁 When you come back, its done. Maybe, I should have checked into the diamond ring option instead. I might have saved some money! LOL. thanks for your awesome comment. I hope you have an amazing day and get out on the trail somewhere. Happy Holidays!
“Diamonds are forever!” Freeze dried food lasts 25-30 years, tops!
A few snippets of advice- invest in the silicone tray mats. Absolutely worth every penny and makes it much easier to clean the trays. Consider investing in a second set of trays so you can still prefreeze things in the freezer while the freeze dryer is running a batch. You can find tray stackers (plastic things that sit in the corners of the trays so you can stack them in the freezer) and it helps save freezer space while they're freezing- if you get these, get the bag for the "large" freeze dryer. The stackers are all the same size, but you get more in the large bag. As for steaks, you can freeze dry thin sliced steaks, like a skirt steak, with pretty good success. Best wishes!
Ah, thank you very much. This is a new appliance for us and we are just starting out. We have learned a lot. We ordered the mats awhile ago and have yet to receive them. So, my wife made some from scratch by buying her own silicone sheets off Amazon and then cut them to fit the trays. Pre-freezing is the way to go but again the additional trays were on back order or something when I went to purchase them. Thanks for the tips. I'll need to retry several items we have experimented with. I have another video coming our in the next day or two of more of our trials. Some successes and some fails. It has been fun experimenting. Thanks for watching and commenting. Have a wonderful day.
@@Packsalot We purchased the silscone sheets and cut them as needed. Works great and makes it so much easier to remove from the trays and keep everything cleaner.
@@timhammond691 Ah, yes. We have since done the same thing as well. The liners are the way to go for sure!
I bought the silicone mats for mine, and they are awesome. Two sets for two sets of trays. About the steaks...I freeze dry mine raw, and I have dried New York Strip steaks, petite sirloins, and even pork chops with great success. I made sure to mark on the mylar bag that the steaks are raw, because they will have to be reconstituted and cooked before eating. The New York strips I cut myself (not hard)...the best size is around 3/4 inch thick. Tray stackers are a must if you are going to pre-freeze your food.
My failures:
Bockwurst...(from a jar) turned to leather.
Whole gooseberries..turned to sticky gloop.
But love my awsome machine!
Thanks for stopping me using honey!👍
Thanks for watching and commenting. Good to know about what others have learned. We love our freeze dryer too. We use it a ton. We will be experimenting more and posting videos of our trials during the off season of hiking. Take care and have s great day.
Beautiful share my friend! Wonderful talks, nice food 👍!
Happy new year to you!
Thank you. It was been fun making freeze dried treats. Glad you liked the video. Have a great day.

Packs-a-lot- less… Good one. Cool machine to experiment with. Merry Christmas to you and your family! 🎄🎁
Thank you. Glad you liked my humor!👍😁 I really am hoping to be 15 pounds lighter on the trail this year. My bones are getting older! Christmas was great, thank you. Hope your was too. Have a great day.
Once again a great video! 👍
Keep up the amazing work, I'm looking forward to the next upload.
Have a great 2022!
Thank you very much. Glad you liked our freeze drying video. Have a wonderful day.
thanks for the quick review of your candies!!
Thanks for watching and commenting. We have been enjoying making freeze dried goodies. Take care and have a great day.
Kristy got a new toy! That's cool. Can't wait to see some other recipes. I know the folks at Sofos Survival make extra servings of their favorite meals and freeze-dry them for the trail and quick meals.
Thanks Stacy. For now we have pretty much been experimenting with trail goodies and candy. We will be trying some meals too. The possibilities are almost limitless. Take care and have a happy holidays.
Wonderful gift and useful as well. I had high hopes for the honey. Great video.
Thanks. Kristy has been loving her freeze dryer. Apparently the honey will keep on its own without going bad. It was fun to experiment anyway. Thanks for watching. Have a wonderful day.
L#38 for this amazing shared.. thanks for letting us witness this process.. This is Mithz watching from Riyadh Saudi Arabia
Thank you. Glad you liked the freeze drying experiments. Take care and have a great day.
Very nice❤.
Thanks for sharing friend 👌👍
Merry Christmas 🌟🌲🌟
Thank you. Happy holidays.
Packs a lots less oh my you are truly a character Steve.🤣 Wow beautiful gift 🎁. Kristy is one lucky lady.👌Love seeing the different experiments with the different items, and your success and fails my friends. Again interesting to watch and learn. Thanks so much for sharing. Enjoyed once again Irene. 😍
Thanks Irene. Glad you liked my humor. LOL. Kristy has been using this thing nearly everyday since we bought it. So much fun doing the food preservation and freeze drying. Don't try honey, it makes a mess. Have a wonderful day.
Thank you for sharing a special and interesting video. Always be happy and healthy!
Thank you. Glad you liked the video. This has been a fun new appliance. Take care.
Big hunks and bit o'honey are our favorites.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Oh, yeah. They are delicious! We love the eggnog taffy the best. So good! Take care and have a great day.
Some fun experiments, guys. Nice gift, but who is playing with it more, lol.
Thanks Wiley. It would seem that the gift was for her but really for me! LOL. We have been having fun with it. Have a Merry Christmas, Wiley. Take care.
Very cool thanks for sharing. Merry Christmas and happy holidays. Stay safe
Thank you. Glad you liked the video. We hope you have a Merry Christmas as well. Take care!
Hello my friend, great machine...like...Happy New Year you and your loved!
Thank you! It has been fun experimenting with it. Happy Holidays!👍😀
Thank you for sharing this with us.
Thank you. You are very welcome. Hopefully it was beneficial to you in some way. Have a great day.
I heard a good tip for draining. Put an air wedge bag under the front legs, pump it up when you’re draining, everything goes to the back.
Thanks for watching and commenting. That is a great idea. Thanks for the tip! Have a wonderful day.
That was actually amazing to watch, the honey looked like it was cooking, not drying hehe 😋 So much fun to experiment with all the different items 😊
Thank you. I was pretty fascinated about the process myself. We are going to have a lot of fun with freeze drying all kinds of food. We will try a few of our favorite meals to. From what I understand you just cook your normal food dishes then set them on the try to freeze dry. Rehydrate with hot water another time, like while backpacking, and you will have your meal again. Pretty cool. Have a great day and a happy holidays.
Thank You for all your videos!!
Thank you very much. Glad you are enjoying the videos. Have a wonderful day.
Great Experimenting your own candy Sir
Cool. merry Christmas happy new year
Thank you. It was fun experimenting with the different foods. Have a great day.

Very interesting and cheers 🥰😍🙏💞😎
Thank you. Glad you liked the video. Take care and have a great day.
Hey guys, I really enjoyed this video. Found the process very interesting. Takes a long time though, but the results are well worth the wait. I bet the yogurt was lovely 😊
Thank you Stephen. This has been a fun appliance to experiment with. You can freeze dry just about anything and it will make the food item very lightweight and gives it a shelf life of 25-30 years. the yogurt was awesome and I will be taking some on our hikes. Take care and have a happy holidays.
Packs a lot less 🤣. Never seen one of these, interesting concept!!! 🍻
Thank you. I'm hoping, my bones are getting older! 😂 This is going to be fun freeze drying and reducing weights plus being able to freeze dry your favorite meal for a backpacking trip. Take care and have a happy holidays.
Hello from a new friend Thailand. You are a smart man. So amazing you can make a lot of good food. I will subscribe for coming back watching your new video again. Thank you for sharing bye-bye.
Thank you for watching and commenting. Glad you liked the freeze drying video. Take care and have a great day.
Quite a nice machine !👍 You have experimented quite a few things there , you will surely like to bring some of them on the hiking trails
Merry Christmas 🎄🎅🏻🧑🏻🎄Kristy and Steve

Thank you very much, Helen & Serge. Kristy is loving her new freeze dryer. To be honest I am too! We will experiment with many food items to take on the trail. I hope you have a happy holidays. Take care.
That's awesome, so many good results from Freeze Dryer. That's is what makes it exciting, limitless experimenting weather it's a fail or success. Thumbs up! 44. Merry Christmas!
Thank you. We have been experimenting more. More fails and successes too. Glad you enjoyed the video. Take care and have a great day.
This is good Idea preserving crops

Big like 16🥀🥀 great sharing dear friend 💞💞💞💞 very nice sharing....
Thank you so much. Have a great day and a happy holidays!
Wow now that's a mac daddy fryer! My dad had one of those little circular ones when I was a kid and made beef jerky, haha well he would have loved yours!! That's so neat what some of them look like, the skittles, the egg nog, so cool I didn't know you could freeze dry half that stuff! Cool share friends! Packs a little less, lol! Thanks for showing the fails as well, but lots of sucesses!
Thank you. Yep, I have one of the circular sir dryers too but this is not your typical air dryer, this is the freeze dryer. Much more complex of a unit. This unit extracts all moisture from the food and makes it so it will last on the shelf for like 40 years. These are the same type of units they use to make those lightweight backpacking meals, powdered milk, and other food storage products. You can pour in liquid and it comes out as powder. Super cool. We have been having so much fun experimenting with it. Glad you liked the video. Take care and have a Merry Christmas.
Good thank you
Thank you. Have a great day.
Show friend 🤩 Big like 👍 sucessos sempre amigo 🙏
Feliz natal 🎉🎉
Thank you. Glad you liked the video. Have a great day and a happy holidays!
That thing is cool! I might have to get one some day. Hop you guys had a fantastic Christmas.
Thank you. Start saving now! They are spendy! They would be perfect for filling up a pantry with your favorite foods. Take care and have a happy holidays!
Merry Christmas guys! 🎄
Thank you very much. Merry Christmas to you as well. Take care and have a great day.
Packs-a-little-less 😂 That freeze dryer looks awesome! Will be cool to see what you bring on trail. Happy holidays!
Thank you. We have been experimenting every day with different kinds of food. It has been a ton of fun. Take care and have a great day.
I love that, so much fun Packs, marshmallows and egg nog even ? And werthers ? This is just brilliant 👏 👏👏
Thank you. Yes, eggnog. However, the eggnog flavored taffy was way better. The Werthers Caramels were airy but tasted the same and weighed nothing! This is such a cool appliance. The possibilities seem endless. Take care and have a happy holidays.
@@Packsalot Sounds amazing 👏
very nice and thanks for sharing great videos and Stay connected🇹🇭😘
Thank you. Glad you liked the video. Take care.
Very interesting, nice!!
Thank you! Glad you liked our experiments. I just put some bacon wrapped grilled steaks in there tonight. I hope they turn out. I'll be taking them on my next backpacking trip to catch some fish! Take care and have a happy holidays.

Very now nice post informative also
Love to watch
Thank you. Glad you liked the video. Have a great day.
Well, I certainly haven't seen one like that before. Cool! Just looking at getting a food dehydrator myself to try some experiments. I do enjoy a great kitchen gadget! Although this may have been hard to fit into a stocking! 😂🧦 Take good care and enjoy! Bruce and Otis
Thanks Bruce. I don't think this will fit in a stocking this year! LOL. We have been using a typical dehydrator for for awhile now. They work great for like your fruits and stuff. But freeze drying takes it to a new level. You can take just about any perishable food, beverage, or your favorite meal and freeze dry it so it will last on the shelf for 25-30 years. It extracts all moisture from the food. Plus, it removes like 90% or more of the weight. Awesome for backpacking food. Less weight to carry. Ice cream sandwich on the trail with Otis without the fear of your ice cream melting? You might go for that! Have a great day.
@@Packsalot I'd never get Otis back to loving his dried liver after a dehydrated ice cream sandwich! LOL
Welcome fellow freeze dryer, Try biscuits and gravy for back packing its great. Honey has too much sugar to dry completely.
Thanks. We will be trying lots of meals and treats. Good to know why the honey didn't dry right. It was a fun experiment. Take care and have a great day.
Lol Tim got me a vacuum cleaner but this is so much better. Very interesting process and funny on the honey. It looks so good when it's done. Definitely nice to have options on the trail. I could do gluten free stuff a lot with this
Thanks Nicole. I think vacuum cleaners "suck"!!! LOL. Yep, is better left along. It made a mess. We are going to experiment with some of our own backpacking meals too. Most of the candy we like turned out great. Plus, like the skittles they were like a 1/4 of the weight after dried. Pretty awesome. Have a great day.
Another Great Video 🥰🥰🙏🙏
Thank you! 😃 Glad you liked the video. Take care.
wow. so good ❤️
Thank you. Take care and have a great day.
Very educational video, my wife has been interested in a freeze dryer for a long time now - agree w/ Senior Hiker 77, the price can be pretty steep. I had no idea it can take 13 hours to do a round of freeze drying. Or that you can freeze dry ice cream sandwiches! Yum! Thanks for sharing, I learned a lot from this video.
Thank you. It is pricey and certainly a luxury item. It has been really cool to experiment with different foods and beverages. Your typical candy takes about 13 hours. Coffee, eggnog, eggs, and other liquid based products takes about 30 hours. Ice cream is a hit for sure. Ice cream sandwich after a long day of backpacking. Pretty cool. Glad you liked the video. Take care and have a happy holidays.
@@Packsalot Thanks and Merry Christmas you guys :)
wow a great one wow really amazing wow amazing wow really stunning cool
Thank you. Glad you liked the video. Take care.
Wow yummy..merry xmass & happy newyear my freind ...❤️
Thank you. Glad you liked the video. Take care and happy holidays.
Awesome stuff Steve! I’ve wanted one of those freeze dryers for a while. My buddy Jared has one and brought a freeze dried Pork Chop he smoked before freeze drying! It was so good!
Thanks Christian. I'm actually going to do bacon wrapped grilled deer steaks tonight. I did broccoli yesterday to go with it. It should be good. Take care and have a great day. 👍😁😃🤤
Looking so beautifull and your work is amzing I really like your content my dear best friend nice..
Thank you so much. 😊 Have a great day.
Yummy options and how you stored them in jars is awesome
Thank you so much, Nicole. Kristy did an amazing job of storing the food. She did a full pantry muck out and organize after this video. I'll need to send you a picture of what she did. Take care.
That was cool!! The ice cream sams were genius! Nice try on the honey. Thanks for showing us this contraption! So if you cooked beef stroganoff and freeze dried it, you could put it in a pouch, like the brand names and add the boiling water? THAT'S NEAT! I've never tried any of the meals but watch Nicole (and others) enjoy them. Thanks!
Thanks Sue. Yes, you can make just about any meal that you want and freeze dry it. Add hot water later, then bam! you are eating it again later. So cool. I did deer steaks the other night. I will post another video soon of how they turned out. It has been a fun new appliance for sure. Have a great day.
@@Packsalot Can't wait to see more!
that is a really cool machine. merry christmas
Thank you for watching and commenting. It has been fun experimenting with different foods to freeze dry. I hope you have a happy holidays. Take care.
Wow! That was really cool to watch. I literally felt my blood sugar sky rocket on most of those items,LOl! Now the eggs and the peppers would be delicious I bet. You did a fantastic job! Maybe honey's just not meant to be freeze dried,I have no idea. Kristy got one heck of a Christmas gift. I just got my wife a book,Lol! Merry Christmas guys!! Viva freeze dryer!!!
Thanks Jim. It has been really fun experimenting with all the different types of carbs! LOL. We need to try some of the healthy foods now. She did manage to freeze dry spinach into a powder that she can put in her smoothies. A l note to all the guys out there, Don't freeze dry your honey, if you know what's good for you. LOL. Lots of people like to read! I hate it. Reading laws, codes, and ordinances every day at work has ruined me in that department. We will bring you some no carb goodies in May. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
the investment will be amortized, congratulations ! thanks for sharing, have a great day
Thank you. It will take awhile but it will eventually pay for itself. It has been fun experimenting with different foods. Take care and have a great day.
Really cool appliance. You should consider doing a running series on freeze dried foods. Merry Christmas!
Thank you John. I will definitely put a video of what we do periodically. It has been a whirlwind of fun experimenting with it. I have been thinking a lot about that ribeye you had in your last video. That might just be my next freeze dryer video. Steak! On a side note, if we get serious about freeze drying I might start a subchannel for it specifically. Take care and have a Merry Christmas!
your video is cool my friend 👍 I like to see it greetings success and health always God bless you and merry christmas may the peace of Christmas be with us all
Thanks. Glad you liked it. Have a happy holidays. Take care.
watching all your videos and supporting this channel, Hope I can count on you, Lets be friends. Never Quit, 2022 is gonna be a great year for you. Keep making videos and doing what makes you happy. Success is yours!!!
Thanks so much. I hope you have an amazing year as well. Take care and have a great day.
Looks like you guys have been playing with your new toy a lot. I'm sure you'll think of lots of cool things to try.
Thanks John. I bought it and brought it home as an early present over 2 weeks ago and it has had a batch of something in it every day since! LOL. She loves it! We will be trying some meals for the trail and more food storage items. It has been a fun appliance for sure. Take care and have a happy holidays.
I read honey is an almost perfect prepper food, it does not rot, does not go rancid. They took perfectly edible honey out of Egyptian tombs
Thanks for watching and commenting. That is super interesting. We kind of figured the honey would keep fine and we have a lot of it in food storage already. We were wondering what this process would do to it so we sampled some of it. It is fun experimenting with the different foods. We have been running a new batch of experiments everyday and will post our results in future videos. Thanks for watching. Take care and have a happy new year!
Love the yougert bites !!!
Thank you. They turned out great. I'll be taking those backpacking for a snack for sure. Have a great day.

Wow very nice yummy yummy merry Xmas godbless po 👍👍👍
Thank you. Glad you liked the video. Take care and happy holidays.
Very interesting how the different foods react. I have to agree the honey did not work well!
Thank you. We are trying many different foods. It is so fun. Thanks for watching. Have a great day.
My dad's wife makes yogurt drops and strawberries that are amazing.
Thanks Jason. Any suggestions are welcome. The yogurt bites turned out good. We are going to try ice cream bites too. Tonight we are doing broccoli. I had rehydrated steamed broccoli on the trail last year that was amazing with some butter. I think the possibilities are limitless. I hope your fishing trip went well at MW. I hope you had a great Christmas too. Take care.
@@Packsalot My snowmobile broke so I will try again next weekend. Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas
Thank you. Happy holidays!
Packs a little less aaaaahahaha! I got some freeze dried skittles from His Way Homestead. I ate myself sick on those things. Wow that's a neat little machine. Well not really little. Took longer to drop temps than I figured it would. Oh man that honey might be hard to clean off. Weird it's reacting that way. The yogurt bites remind me of the marshmallows in lucky charms. Ah so you did skittles. They are delicious!! I've heard ice cream sandwiches aren't too good freeze dried. What did you guys think of them? That's really cool that you can do all that. I would do it, but not sure I have the patience for it. Think the excitement would wear off quick and then it would just be taking up space lol.
Thank you, Felix. Maybe I'll be lighter on the trail this year because I'm getting lazier the older I get. Tired of packing the extra weight. Our favorite has been the eggnog flavored taffy. My daughter loves the ice cream sandwiches. Skittles are addicting too. I really liked the Hi-Chews. they are better dehydrated than fresh. The excitement better not wear off of this pricey appliance! We will bring you some of our favorites for your road trip. Take care.
@@Packsalot Aww thanks! That's so sweet! :) Hopefully the excitement doesn't wear off. And I may not for you, but I know me LOL
hello friend happy morning watching from hongkong
Hello and thank you. Glad you like the video. I hope you have an amazing day. Take care.
Woooooooow!! 🤯🤯😳I mean I agree that it's super cool and easy to use but is it practical? or even worth buying one at all in the long run?
Thank you Dave. Well, I think this is more of a luxury item for us. But I do see the potential for filling up a food pantry in preparation for a zombie apocalypse! LOL. Actually, we will be using it mainly to freeze dry foods that would normally get thrown out if they go bad because they are perishable. Additionally, the added bonus of freeze drying your favorite at home meals so you can take them on road trips or extended backpacking trips. Not to mention all the treats for our sweet tooth. Thanks for watching and have a great day.

Wow, I didn't even know you could get a home unit to make freeze dried food. That was very interesting! Have you tried some main courses like lasagna? Maybe, since we can buy those, it is not worth it? This is so fascinating. Does it really reduce the weight of skittles? Sorry about all of the questions. What a great new toy. Merry Christmas to you and Kristy!
Thank you. Kristy had to wait a couple years, but I finally got her one. It has been real fun experimenting with different foods. We are going to some of our favorite meals. Lasagna should work as well. Food times go in at their normal weights but come out like air. Reduces the weight significantly. I'm so exited to be able to reduce some of my food weight on the trail. Keep having fun on the island and have a Merry Christmas!
Really good news nice recibe 🇪🇦👍🏻
Thank you for watching. Take care.
i wonder if you put parchment paper under the honey and over it if it would work better?
it would contain the mess more for sure. Thanks for watching and commenting. Good luck on your freeze drying if you have one too. Have a wonderful day.
Can you show freeze drying meals and meats? Doing it the way mtn house does, but better?
Thank you Tom for watching and commenting. Yes! Actually, we will be experimenting with some meals for sure. We are hoping to make homemade meals that taste just as good on the trail as they do at home. I will try to get a video out at least every couple weeks on the freeze drying experiments and demonstrations. Thanks for following along. Have an amazing day.
This is why they say not to freeze-dry sugar. Honey included.
Thanks for watching and commenting. It was fun experimenting with the different foods as we are new to the freeze drying process. Take care and have a great day.

Just ordered a medium Harvest Right FD. Can you put plastic ice trays inside the machine?
Thanks for watching. You will love the freeze dryer. Ours has been going nonstop since December. I do not know for sure but I've seen on amazon that you can buy spacers and stackers which I think are plastic. So maybe it would be ok. Items that we put into ice trays we freeze first in the regular freezer then put them on cold freeze dryer trays as we are putting them into the freeze dryer. Seems to work pretty well. Good luck. Have a great day.
