    Mine came without a pillow, which they informed me wasn't needed. However, I subsequently had to make one as water condensed on the outside of freezer door as long as it was running, and made a very large puddle on the floor. I did not compare dryer run time , so was happy to see in the video the it actually decreased run time. Thank you for your very informative videos.

      Exactly why I run mine with a pillow. In the few months of the Spring and early summer that it is humid, but not miserably hot out, we don't run the AC. But there is enough humidity in the air to cause a condensation issue without the pillow.

    I bought some plexiglass at Home Depot yesterday, and will be cutting it to fit the opening. That way, I can use thermometers to check the internal temps of the food without opening the door, and to ensure the process is working, along with weighing each tray. There is a video on YT that explains how to, and the benefit of doing this. And the plexiglass does cut down on the condensation on the door.

    I found that my FD developed condensation on the door without a pillow that usually results in a small puddle under the door. So, I will continue to use the pillow for less mess and quicker drying times.

    I just bought one of these units, with the oil free pump. We are just learning to play with this great Modernist Cuisine instrument.
    The pillow is simple thermodynamics. There is more thermal conduction without the pillow. That being said, from what I can see with the pillow, is that there is greater risk of losing a batch due to poor vacuum seal. Thank you for going to the effort to evaluate.

    I think the main difference is your environment. If your freeze dryer is in a controlled environment with low humidity it probably doesn't have a lot of effect. But if your freeze dryer is in an environment with relatively high humidity then you're going to have a lot of condensation on the door, and the resulting puddle beneath it.

    I'm not surprised that it takes longer without since it's not as insulating so likely takes longer to get to the initial freeze. Especially as it hasn't vacuum sealed the door yet. I've also seen comments on the facebook pages that after a few years, the relatively fast temperature changes can damage the door and it cracks. For me, I leave it off if I put something in that I'm worried might explode or expand than I want. I get a lot of condensation around the door and and rubber ring that I don't get with the pillow.
    I kinda feel like HR just took an easy, cheap way out. First they started only making one size which is why some don't fit properly, which is why people have a hard time with not getting it in right and having the seal not work. Then they'd complaints about that so decided not to supply it. I just expect that in a few years, lots of people are going to end up needing new doors. If I buy another one and don't get a pillow, I'll make one myself. For now, they have a monopoly on the machines so it's not like you can go to a competitor that does supply them.

    Thanks for this video. My husband didn't see a way to use our pillow, but having watched people put them in I knew it was "supposed" to be used but in the manual it doesn't tell you to use it! When I run it without the pillow I have excess moisture dripping down on the floor and on top of the seal ring....so I'm guessing we need to try using it. This is a 2020 model that we just setup now due to illness past 3 yrs. I had no idea the seal ring came off so easily, so I'll tell my husband to watch this. ;) Thanks a bunch!

    Seems to me that an elastic frame pillow could be created to place on the OUTSIDE of the glass door for added insulation,,,instead of the inside. I don't know if condensation would still occur, but it definitely would not risk a vacuum problem. Maybe I will get creative and see what happens. I'll let you know!!

    • @jdsbees3257
      @jdsbees3257 Год назад

      That’s the information I’m currently looking for, and what brought me here. Seems to me an elastic frame pillow, like you’re talking about, would be just as efficient, as far as helping maintain even temperature inside the vacuum chamber, with the added bonus of being able to remove it, to peel inside. I just got my machine, did the initial bread run today, and trying to absorb as much information as I possibly can. One thing about an outside pillow, if humidity is an issue, the inner surface may need to be of an absorbent material. I think I’ll break out the sewing machine tomorrow and see what I can come up with. I’d appreciate any advice or suggestions you may have come up with since this post. BeeguyJ

    Thank you for this video. I had requested this in another video comment after I received no pillow. As I expected, the time is extended for each batch which causes unnecessary wear and tear on the unit, and will cause the FD to process less batches before it wears out. Of course, this is good for HarvestRight because they have less phone calls for support and have now added “planned obsolescence” to the product, which increases their profit. I know you are an affiliate, so it is in your best interests to tell people that HarvestRight is who you should listen too. I for one, will be adding a pillow to also help with condensation issues here in South. Thanks again!

      Just an update, This is the reply I received from an email I sent to HR asking if they could provide me with test results showing the lack of the door pad would not extend the run time and wear & tear on the FD unit. Unfortunately, they seem to have avoided the question: “Hi there, thank you so much for contacting us! The sales team was correct. We have discontinued the door pad. When we did have them, all they were used for was to help insulate the machine. After our engineers did a lot of testing, we found that they were essentially useless so we decided to stop carrying them. We also learned that the door pads were causing more issues than not! A lot of vacuum errors were because of that pad. It was a fairly recent decision to discontinue them which is probably why you are still seeing them in videos online."

    I always wonder how nasty the batting in these pillows gets. Normally, it's a no-no to use porous materials in a food processing or prep area because they're difficult to keep sanitary.
    I also wonder if the pad would cause excessive carryover of odors between batches. Try doing a batch of onions, and then a batch of something bland. Try this with and without the pillow.
    What about making an insulating pad that snaps onto the outside of the door, so you can take it on and off, and not have it be inside of the freeze dryer? That seems more sanitary, and allows you to peek in any time, and remove it entirely once the vacuum process begins.
    I see no reason not to insulate the door from the outside.

    If you process and freeze dry in a room kept at a lower temperature (say 53 degrees F) you don't really need the pillow. The cold room also speeds up the freezing, costs less energy, and colder air carries less humidity, so after freeze dry less moisture gets back into the food.

    Just got my FD on Sunday. For your information, the "pillow" has one function, and one function only. It is an insulator. However, there is no harm in not using one. It all has to do with thermodynamics. Think of it this way, plexiglass has an R value of 0.86. Fiberglass is 3.8 So as your FD is cooling, the plexiglass is transferring heat from the room to the chamber, causing a longer cooling cycle, costing more money. On the other side, the FD will need to work harder keeping a consistent drying heat as it is always loosing heat to the outside. Again costing you more money. And yes, I am one of those engineering types.

    • @jaymemaurice
      @jaymemaurice 2 года назад

      @@brucejohnson1264 the initial freeze cycle is not under vacuum. It has to get to -17c first. This will be faster with the pillow. In fact my freeze drier isn't getting to -17c if I let it cool and not load it right away. I think this is because the humidity gets on the sensor and insulates it. Ice is 0degrees.

    • @jsigmo
      @jsigmo 2 года назад

      The melting/freezing point of pure water is 0 degrees C. But frozen ice can be cooled to any temperature below that. Think of ice cubes straight from your freezer. If you have wet hands, they'll freeze that water and stick to your fingers when you handle them. That's because those cubes straight from your freezer are at the freezer's temperature, which is well below freezing.
      When we use an ice/water mixture for thermometer calibration, the NIST guideline is to make an "ice slush with the ice particles the consistency of a snow cone" (Their actual words).
      This is important, because ice particles that size are small enough to rapidly equalize in temperature with the surrounding water/ice mixture, and yet large enough to not melt too quickly.
      Using ice cubes in water for thermometer calibration is a problem because the big cubes may stay well below the freezing point for a long time. Thus, your thermometer will be too cold when it's in contact with a cube, but be too warm when it's out in a space between cubes.
      Use deionized water, Grind the DI ice to be the consistency of a snow cone. Add only enough DI water to barely fill the void space between the ice particles, and pour off excess water as the slush melts, and you will have a very accurate thermometer calibration bath.

    In regards to whether the “pillow” is or isn’t beneficial isn’t necessarily food quality but time and energy consumption.
    The pillow could potentially reduce loss of temperature in its heat or cooling cycles.
    Put an energy consumption gauge on it with accurate timing…
    It would also be interesting if you used an accurate laser temperature meter and take potential “loss” readings on each heat/cooling cycle at the door where the pillow rests…

    My thoughts on this are, its less than a 5% difference between the two. Meaning that it most likely doesn't do much if at all. I come from dynoing cars, it take 3 runs in the same environment and I've seen anywhere from 2% to 10% fluctuation. No 3 tests are the same. If it was like 5 hours or even 3 hours difference I would say it helps. But I believe that if you did a few more runs it would vary between the 2. With pillow shorter on some and Without pillow would be shorter as well. Unless you saw like 15% difference in power usage as well I would say the results are far too close to call.

    My Freeze Dryer arrived yesterday (without a pillow) and I'm about to commission it with a bread-run. Looking at the comments below, I believe that a pillow has advantages - less condensation and shorter run times. It is winter here and the current humidity is 95%, so I suspect lots of condensation.
