  • Don Carlo: grand-opera in 4/5 acts by Giuseppe Verdi
Above is the aria 'Non pianger mia compagna' sung by Montserrat Caballé and conducted by Eliahu Inbal with the Verona Teatro Arena Orchestra and the Verona Teatro Arena Chorus from a live performance of the opera in it's 4 act version that took place on the 7th of February, 1969 at the Arena of Verona, Italy.

Here is a short excerpt from the Wikipedia synopsis of this scene:
"...The King Flippo II enters and becomes angry because the Queen Elisabetta is alone and unattended by her lady-in-waiting. He orders the lady-in-waiting who was meant to be attending her, the Countess of Aremberg, to return to France, prompting Elizabeth to sing a sorrowful farewell-aria to her beloved lady-in-waiting and friend. (Aria: "Non pianger, mia compagna"). King FIlippo II's suspicions and actions were deeply insulting to her majesty Elisabetta."

    Libretto in English:
    ELIZABETH
    Do not cry, my partner,
    Soothe your pain.
    Bandit you are from Spain
    But not from this cor
    With you of my life
    The dawn was still happy:
    Return to his native,
    My heart will follow you.
gives a ring to the Countess
    Get extreme pledge
    Of all my favor.
    Hate unworthy outrage
    Waves I blush again.
    Do not say crying,
    Of the raw my pain;
    Return to home,
    My heart will follow you.
    Libretto in Italian:
    ELISABETTA
    Non pianger, mia compagna,
    Lenisci il tuo dolor.
    Bandita sei di Spagna
    Ma non da questo cor
    Con te del viver mio
    L'alba fu lieta ancor:
    Ritorna al suoi natio,
    Ti seguirà il mio cor.
    dà un anello alla Contessa
    Ricevi estremo pegno
    Di tutto il mio favor.
    Cela l'oltraggio indegno
    Onde arrossisco ancor.
    Non dir del pianto mio,
    Del crudo mio dolor;
    Ritorna al suol natio,
    Ti seguirà il mio cor.

What was crazier: Montsy's 23-second phrase or the audience screaming brava in the end?

Caballe's pianissimo could turn anything into a masterpiece. It's not just a dynamic with her, it opens up another musical portal.

Absolutely. It creates emotional intimacy and a window into the personal thoughts of the women she portrays. It gives life to ice-cold heroines.

@@NLidar I always thought that was one of Caballe's defining vocal characteristics- a kind of introverted intimacy combined with a regal bearing and great warmth. That's why critics said when she was about to kill her children as Norma, you knew she was never going to do it.
She is the mother, no doubt.

Amazing. Poor chorus, having to sustain their notes for as long as she did at 3:20...

Don't worry about the chorus. For them it's just a sort of relay race. Whe someone gets out of breath the one next to him keeps on singing.
