Written for and to the woman who he'd been in love with for years. He was living in the UK. They'd been together for a bit, but she wanted a more steady, probably grown up life. She moved to California, and, of course, eventually formed a relationship with some bloke. But Donovan realized that he never "got over" her. And he never wanted to either. He eventually understood...for him, there was just Her. He said he knew he HAD to write and record something so good that there was no doubt it would be a hit and so would be played on the other side of the world, and she would hear it. And she needed to know ..he meant HER. AND that it had to be a piece that would be good enough, captivating enough, charming enough to be his foot in the door to win her back. They married, and remained so. I'd marry a god damn ham sandwich if it did a song that good for ME.
I came "of age" in 1967 Don't consider myself "lucky" in any way, shape, or form. Would you consider yourself lucky to be 18 yrs old just outta high school madly in love with life and your girlfriend, great future with a company that approched YOU with an offer of a lifetime, then suddenly finding yourself forced by the governtment to DROP all your plans and opportunities forget your fiancee , your family, your passions, and go to a place you never even heard of to dodge the bullets of people trying to kill you and watching your freinds be blown away right in front of your face! Every fucking day. And YOU the moron you are wish you would have been there?
I like being still relatively young in an age of mind-bendingly rapid technological and social advancement and knowing I will live through the 'make or break' era for civilization. But my parents lived during another time of rapid change, one that laid the path for today, AND they got to be teenagers too :) AND they heard all this great music as it came out!
@@danielwilder6185 I remember that shit as my older brother was in the exact same position as you, I think a little younger. I'm glad you survived it, Daniel. I remember my whole family sitting around the TV watching the fucking draft lottery and my brother's birthday came up way too soon. He was mentally preparing to go but then they discontinued the draft or something. People forget there was a really FUCKED UP war going on when all this fantastic music was happening. It was all so overwhelming and wonderful but mostly terrifying when I thought my brother was going to die. Every night at dinner there were fights between my brother and my WWII veteran dad ("my country, right or wrong," lifelong Democrat). And my poor mother saying, "more potatoes, anyone?" Serious discussions of fleeing to Canada and my dad saying he would disown him. My boyfriend became a conscientious objector. No wonder people dropped acid.
Immediately, The Greg Kihn Band’s one-hit wonder started going in my head. But you’re absolutely right. I’m a baby. I’m just barely a millennial. But I grew up listening to artists like The Kinks, The Beatles, Van Morrison, Joe Jackson, Donovan, The Rolling Stones, Duke Ellington, among others. Even though I was born in the late 90s, I’m a 60s, 70s, and 80s kid (at least when it comes to movies, tv shows, and music). I favor the 80s, mostly, but I love the 60s and 70s stuff a lot too. I just wish that they sped it up a little bit even just once, if only in a concert. It’s already a fantastic song, but if they were able to increase the tempo from 120 BPM, which is faster than the average of 114 BPM for 60s rock to 180 BPM, which is typical of quite a few songs from the 80s and 90s. I’d speed it up by 1.5x using RUclips playback, but then their voices start to sound like chipmunks, and that’s not appealing. I’ll just have to learn it on my guitar and play it a bit faster than they do.
Not to mention he also mentioned Green Lantern. I was born in 86, but love music from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. Feel like i was definitely born in the wrong time. Even to be born in the 60s wouldve been great couldve. There are some decent bands out today, but Zeppelin, The Doors, Queen, The Who, Jefferson Airplane. Just can't come close to those bands.
We cannot underestimate how crucial Donovan's influence continues to be. E.g. His influence on the Beatles' songwriting via chordal progression & finger-picking on 'The White Album', was profound. He also made it cool to mix instruments from various cultures or epochs. Then there is the spiritual progressiveness, another intercultural border crossing. A brilliant soul. He is an honorary guest at Faerieworlds Live From Home 21-23 August 2020. True to style, he inspires generations of troubadours who still greet the world with wonder.
John Lennon went to Donovan for help with writing the song “Julia”. As you said, Donovan also taught Lennon the finger-picking guitar technique. I don’t know much about Donovan or his music, but I’m just now getting to know him better and I must say, he does not disappoint! 😀
Super cool voice and a great, unique sound. He sounds like the mid 60s in the best possible way. Most people born 80s and later don't know him by name, but have heard (and probably like) a ton of his songs from movies

Adrian, I know I'm commenting two years after you posted that, but never mind the jerks. I still remember first impressions of some music from when I was even younger than that -- two pieces by Chopin, in particular. I have the sense that these pure musical impressions came from a time before I even learned language. Some songs are of that unique quality that sticks, and even from when you were as young as 3 the song can still take you back. This is definitely one of them, though I first heard it when it first came out and I was a teenager. I call them memory magnets. They "get ya"... y'know what I mean? They go straight to your brain's "hard drive" and stay there for the rest of your life, along with your sensations of that particular moment. I believe the oldest memories many people have are of music. Another of Donovan's songs that has that quality is "Mellow Yellow." So, yes, I absolutely do believe you and understand what you're talking about, because I've experienced it myself. Sad that some of these other commenters can't relate to it. BTW, I'm 71.

One of the nicest people you will ever meet . I met Don in Vancouver 3 times - Expo Theatre - Town Pump -Commodore Ballroom. Thank you Donovan for sharing your talent with the world and your warm welcome each time we met .
Loved this song when I heard it back in the sixties- was just a kid ! Still love it and I’m 60 this year! What an amazing period in time. This music and so much more from that era , just awesome!
Have you ever seen the version with Sue Lyon, photo's. That Was his girlfriend, Once. Stanley Kubrick's absolute favorite MODEL! Need Not ask Why?? Wow, from CJ Cleve./ Akron - of course ALWAYS loved the Sound of V-Twins, the Motor Company, used to make, too..!!!
This song's kinda ahead of it's time, lyrically. I can't recall Superman and Green Lantern being referenced in many other rock songs from around this era, which is cool considering is by a famous artist when most people just saw comics as kids stuff back then (at least from what I've heard, could be wrong) But I also love the trippy metaphors for tripping acid and going down on some hippie queen of his, that was pretty slick.
I have loved Donovan forever!!!! I never tire of hearing his lilting melodies and his silken voice!!! I adore playing our music for young folks!! Ultimately, they always come to dig it ...........
The bass JPJ plays here is Resonet (Jolana) Arco standup electric bass, made in Czechoslovakia. It fits in just perfectly. He used it with Led Zep, on LZ III - BYA Stomp, and on Black Country Woman, also played her on LZ concerts
I was 5-1/2 years old when I heard this while wading in the city fo Norwalk CA public pool in 1966. The radio was playing and I thought it so cool even to this day.
While Donovan’s music is still great to this day, many comments suggest Donovan himself is “the most under rated musician ever” and similar statements. But the truth to the matter is that these other legends of musical talent were playing for Donovan, and it’s their incredible talent that makes this music so special. And yes, Donovan’s voice fit the music very well also. But when a singer has Jimmy Page writing and playing the guitar parts, and John Bonham on drums laying down a perfect rhythm AND John Paul Jones laying a bass groove perfectly tight with the drummer, how could anything go wrong? These guys would of course later call in Robert Plant and become Led Zeppelin. One of the most successful, famous groups of all time. And that’s why we can’t contribute all of the success of Donovan to the one man singing! It’s a team effort, and it involves the best team in the business.
This commercial has played nonstop where I live, and this song constantly intrigued me, even entering into my dreams. I just had to look up where it came from and now I’m pleasantly surprised.
IT'S SHORT, BUT THE LEAD BREAK IS JUST BRILLIANTLY MELODIC, I KNOW THE LYRICS RELIGIOUSLY BUT I LISTEN TO IT MAINLY FOR THE LEAD, JUST LIFTS ME OFF THE GROUND FOR EIGHT OR NINE SECONDS. SATT.
Woke up with this song on my mind this morning, remembered the artist and all. I was born in ‘54, of course I remembered from the ‘60s> loved it then, love it NOW! ❤
In 1997, Imani Coppola had her one-and-only Top 40 song with "Legend Of A Cowgirl" in which "Sunshine Superman" was sampled, and that probably helped in its success
Omg I’ve fallen down the weirdest rabbit hole. It’s started with watching the show “would I lie to you” recognizing a contestant as the guy that plays the pirate with a wooden eye in pirates of the Caribbean. Googling him to learn his name, learning he plays the British version of Dwight on the original office. Then I went to see his current roles, saw a show called Brittania. I thought it sounded interesting so I clicked over to its page. It said that the first two series openings used a song by Donovan, Season of the Witch and Hurdy Gurdy man. I’m like, hmm never heard of the latter. Click it, learn it was conceptualized while he was studying transcendental meditation with the Beatles, which two podcasts I’ve listened to recently intercepted with that and mentioned it which was odd enough. So I’m like, “I need to hear this song” and low and behold I do know it so I’m like, “hey let’s see his other videos” immediately I recognize mellow yellow title, and season of the witch and now hurdy gurdy man, so I’m like let’s see if I recognize “sunshine” and I do!! Long story short apparently Donovan sings a lot of some of my favourite songs. I’ve always been really good with lyrics but trash with names, people, bands, songs so it’s not shocking I often miss connections. It just delights me to make all these connections.

'Cause I made my mind up you're going to be mine
I'll tell you right now
Any trick in the book now, baby, all that I can find
Superman or Green Lantern ain't got a-nothin' on me
I can make like a turtle and dive for your pearls in the sea, yeah
A you-you-you can just sit there a-thinking on your velvet throne
'Bout all the rainbows a-you can a-have for your own
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine
I'll pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine
I'll pick up your hand
I'll pick up your hand
Thanks for the lyrics, amazing how he still sounds amazing

Thank you😊
Thank you for typing the lyrics for us, and me. I often don't catch a word or phrase in many songs, especially The Stones. Mick can't sing clearly.....I think he must move and ji rate in the record studio!😅😅😅
Dam I miss good music on the radio, guess that is why I don't listen to it. This is some of the best. Makes you feel good inside.
In most countries, there are specific channels for each genre. Look for a 60s channel :)
In this instance it is spelt damn not dam which is a barrier to hold back water.
@@davidparris7167 Oh back off, you miserable pedant.
The Golden Age of Radio music
One of the nicest people you will ever meet . I met Don in Vancouver 3 times - Expo Theatre - Town Pump -Commodore Ballroom. Thank you Donovan for sharing your talent with the world and your warm welcome each time we met .
Donovan has a VEVO channel? Life = complete.
Feel u XD
Had not heard this song in many years until the "Farm Fresh Florida" commercials started showing on South Florida television
Me 2. I didn't remember what they were advertising
Fresh fruits and vegetables
True lol
I know this bc of my Dad he's always singing cool tunes 😎🔥💋✌️
Loved this song when I heard it back in the sixties- was just a kid ! Still love it and I’m 60 this year! What an amazing period in time. This music and so much more from that era , just awesome!
Always appreciate Donovan’s music
Thanks
Trippin on some Lucy listening to Donovan is as good as it gets 😮
Was either 8 or 9 when this came out on the radio. The year was 1966. What a great song!
Just amazing?? Where in the hell did he come up with these lyrics ?? Unbelievable !!
We were living it ~ 🌅
He was under rated
I love this era of rock/pop production.
This song's kinda ahead of it's time, lyrically. I can't recall Superman and Green Lantern being referenced in many other rock songs from around this era, which is cool considering is by a famous artist when most people just saw comics as kids stuff back then (at least from what I've heard, could be wrong)
But I also love the trippy metaphors for tripping acid and going down on some hippie queen of his, that was pretty slick.
obviously not a lyrical reference but there’s a dr. strange comic panel featured on Pink Floyd’s Saucerful Of Secrets album cover
superman and green lantern were popular types of lsd at the time, printed on paper with the characters symbols
Saw him live about 4yrs ago❤Still THAT COOL!!
I have loved Donovan forever!!!! I never tire of hearing his lilting melodies and his silken voice!!! I adore playing our music for young folks!! Ultimately, they always come to dig it ...........
Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones (of Led Zeppelin) played on this song
wow I never knew this , also shocked duane Allman played on Layla
Really? Awesome! I'm guessing that's Jonesy on bass, but did Jimmy do rhythm guitar or that little solo?
Holy shit I didn't know that either... I'm learning something new everyday since I've been locked in my apartment for over a month...
Woo hoo
@@NoTaboos Page was on Season of the Witch
Happy Total Eclipse 2024!
The bass JPJ plays here is Resonet (Jolana) Arco standup electric bass, made in Czechoslovakia. It fits in just perfectly.
He used it with Led Zep, on LZ III - BYA Stomp, and on Black Country Woman, also played her on LZ concerts
I didn't know JPJ played on this record! Thank you for that awesome bit of information!!
Imagine going on a trip with your father looking for dead animals listening to this gem
Priceless
I was 5-1/2 years old when I heard this while wading in the city fo Norwalk CA public pool in 1966. The radio was playing and I thought it so cool even to this day.
You described this memory in great detail. It painted an awesome picture in my head.
This song will always throw me back to the hot summer of l966.
it is cool
the first time I heard this it was 1966 and I was 11.
You were listening to pirate radio ships back in those days. One of those DJs is the legendary Tony Blackburn.
Heard it in 67 from older neighbors record player outside his window..he had the cream..beatles..arlo guthrie... donovan...
@@dennis12dec i heard it on the armed forces radio, far east network, tokyo. lol we were stationed in japan.
I was 12> loved it then and NOW ❤
While Donovan’s music is still great to this day, many comments suggest Donovan himself is “the most under rated musician ever” and similar statements.
I remember hearing this in Cleveland Ohio, on the AM Radio at the Local Plunge. Summer 1965.
1965: Wrong year. Summer 1966 is correct.
Donovan was an artist.
Mod into psychedelic, he crossed the bridge.
Some artists I appreciate more now that I’m older. Donovan’s one of them. This is my favorite of his. ❤
Theres quite a bit of ore to mine, once you start digging.
@Thedonovanofficial. Would you want to rephrase that ?
この曲のインスト盤が「鶴光のオールナイトニッポン」のCM時のフィラーとして使われていましたよね。当時はドノバンのこの曲が原曲だったとはまったく知りませんでした。苦笑
Does it even get more 'cool' than this? His music and voice are just so slick. And I like tons of music.
This song is used on the Fresh from Florida commercial on tv. Every morning, my husband and I hear it and do 60s dancing. Lol.
This commercial has played nonstop where I live, and this song constantly intrigued me, even entering into my dreams. I just had to look up where it came from and now I’m pleasantly surprised.

Memories of Pirate Radio ships playing this song in the 60s.
Love stories about pirate radio. Stickin' it to the man with tunes.
Later, studio backing musicians *John Paul Jones* on Bass and *Jimmy Page* on Lead Guitar formed a little know band called Led Zeppelin...
Greatest song of the 60s
@Keith Stevens What's wrong with that Keith? His sexuality shouldn't matter, it's about the music he produced.

Donovan got the Beatles going!!!
Bob Dylan got Donovan going.
I love the rhythms present in Donovan's tunes. They are original and memorable.
This is just one of many songs on my mind this morning.
Good Day Sunshine
Good Morning Starshine
Sunshine Superman
Aquarius/Let The Sun Shine In
Sunny
Kind of a theme, there?

Thanks for reminding me of "Sunny". (Bobby Hebb) What a good song! Brings back memories.
Thnz to Netflix Dahmer series this song is still alive ..loved it here from the Philippines..👍🙏🏼💖🇵🇭💿
bruh it's not because of this goofy series💀
60s rock is my jam! This song is a banger!
IT'S SHORT, BUT THE LEAD BREAK IS JUST BRILLIANTLY MELODIC, I KNOW THE LYRICS RELIGIOUSLY BUT I LISTEN TO IT MAINLY FOR THE LEAD, JUST LIFTS ME OFF THE GROUND FOR EIGHT OR NINE SECONDS.
SATT.
A young Donovan gave us this gem in the sixties!
This song is terrific 🎉🎉. It's very criminally underrated along with the artist who sang this song 🎵 🎉
How can 499 people dislike Donovan????
Woke up with this song on my mind this morning, remembered the artist and all. I was born in ‘54, of course I remembered from the ‘60s> loved it then, love it NOW! ❤
Excellent
It was an OK song in the 60s. But about 10 years ago I heard it with great speakers and the music drove me insane with its greatness. Try it.
This is mind blowing amazing!!! Jim is smiling sumwhere!
In 1997, Imani Coppola had her one-and-only Top 40 song with "Legend Of A Cowgirl" in which "Sunshine Superman" was sampled, and that probably helped in its success
It was nothing without donovan .
my favorite song by donovan
I remember this when I was just a little boy,,,,,,,,,'bout '65/66/67..............WOW!

Jimmy Page beasting on this one
Every Donovan song is an instant mood brightener.
I'm currently in High School, just found this, now sharing this with friends.
This is ridiculously good.
Really like this song in the sixties. Really groovey man🏅🎸🥁📻🙉
changed my ways...loved this !!!!! I made my mind up your gonna mine....

He has a Cool voice! I'm still listening in 2022
