Any dude who has a successful career drumming can teach drums. I love all these unsuccessful RUclips comments saying he can't. Always haters out there. Aaron got a certain style and he teaches that.
Couldn't have said it better myself! Thank you for leaving a comment with some purpose and a brain behind it, most people just leave a lot of negativity and its not cool.
Ya I agree. He can do whatever he wants. No hate from my end. I also see this is your video. So props that you got to take lessons from Aaron. So, aside from mentioning his technique, these haters are not mentioning why its bad. It's detrimental to you body. Most of these kids he teaches (very similar style to Blink182) will end up with terrible athrits or other bone/muscle/back issues. Thats the reason it's bad. I respect the guy 100 percent. I have learned a lot from his drumming over the years and have been a fan. But personally, I had to give this style up and switch my technique. I now play similar beats/rhythm but just lighter with more wrist than arm. Plus, the drum head/cymbal companies love when you beat your drums up faster. It makes them more money! Travis Barker was complimented many times by famous drummers. He mentioned it in his autobiography. But they also warned him about his hard hitting and the issues it will lead to.
Charlestown 14 you can totally play hard but you have to keep your grip loose and relaxed and play with the moeller technique. you don't start hitting that hard, it comes naturally with relaxed practice.
I agree. I have seen Jim Chapin's video utilizing the moeller technique. However, many drummers, including Aaron & Barker, don't seem to utilize it. I have utilized it with my band recently, and I find that although its better for my body, the volume is fairly reduced.
fuck the haters. Aaron is an INCREDIBLE drummer. Although he ( MIGHT) lack fundamentals, his drumming stlye is revered, incredibly specific and is full of emotion and feeling. A true genius, hated by the snobs and loved by his fans.
Aaron has every right to teach. He has come so far and is absolutey destroying the Paramore gig. Dude he has become one of my favorite drummers. I am shocked at how great he is. Nice fella too!!!
Yeah that makes a lot of sense. Keep in mind thouh that I was sitting two feet away from one of my favorite drummers. I couldn't help that natural nervousness and tension. Also, Jojo Mayer is one of my favorite drummers. Thanks though, you're definitely correct.
I have watched this video so much because i love the style he teaches and the grooves sound really cool. Aaron Gillespie is one of my favorite drummers.
Josh112096 it’s not hating his drumming. He’s good, just the endless bashing and breaking cymbals every show though? That’s not drumming. That’s abuse to an instrument.
Matt Glidewell that wasn’t the point of my comment lol. He’s good and can afford it sure, but the reason his style is frowned upon is because it’s so loud and hard hitting that you almost can’t even enjoy it. When I play live I hit hard but I also don’t abuse my instrument.
If you are referring to what we were doing around :40, we were doing something called crazy eights, which is where you do 8 strokes on the right hand, 8 strokes with the left, then 16 with the right, followed by 8 on the left, 8 with the right, and 16 on the left.
Connor man, you're like right down the road, its crazy to see how much you've come along, now you're 18 and in BAAO. congratz man, I remember the Sleep Pattern days haha
Completely agree with you man. It took me probably upwards of six years to realize that a lot of my natural style was influenced by 3 Doors Down, simply because I listened to a lot of them when I was first learning to play. I didn't realize I was influenced because I was looking for an influence, I realized it because I was listening to a song and most of the beat and fills (etc.) were almost exactly what I would have done. Influence isn't chosen, it just happens.
it's funny how people criticise aaron. he lacks technique blablabla. c'mon guys, srsly? since when music has been exclusively about technique and nothing about creativity and feeling? is it important? yes, it is. but each and every person has your own balance. aaron has his and he's (very) good at it.
Aaron Gillespie is probably my favorite musician, he's an awesome drummer, great songwriter and most important he has a love for the lord, god is using him for good things and has been since the beginning, he inspires me to play music for the lord and shows you cab keep faith and play music.
Wow. I just went to look at your channel as I was curious to find out how incredible you are as a drummer and how great your technique is. I am really just shocked that you have zero videos of yourself drumming on there. Great backing to your comment.
I really want to clear some stuff up. It really is as simple as this guys. There are so many different things to take into account. Aaron obviously doesn't care much for technique in the way of finer points, but that works great for him. Yes he is doing amazing things all around the world, and that is because people don't give a shit about ur technique on stage. These days it is how you look when you drum and the style and flair you bring. People that are saying the technique is horrible, you are wrong. There is no technique. That is literally just hitting pads at a hard dynamic with no regards to dynamics or technique.. but hey man! That works for Aaron and he is getting himself places, so it just depends on how you look at it. He obviously isn't going to be the most technically sophisticated drummer and anyone looking for proper technique lessons need to start looking in the right places, but that's not what he is aiming for. For what he does, what he is doing is perfect. If you want to be the next Dave Weckl, this video is obviously not a good place to start and if you want to learn technique, it's redundant looking at these videos, go somewhere else with the whole technique thing. The fact is, what he does works for Aaron. Sure, as a general rule, it is usually not good to hit this hard with a tense technique. It will end up hurting you later, but again I digress, because to each his own, and Aaron seems to found his own thing that works for him! Rant over motherfuckers. Side note - did anyone notice that he said thirty second notes when you guys went on to play 16ths? Gona be seeing him soon with Paramore in a few days, so it will be interesting to see what he brings to the table since Ilan. Anyway, keep practising at different dynamics and experiment with different techniques and you will find ur own style (if thats what you are going for of course ;) ). Sorry to go on but i thought i'd clear some shit up. Peace!
Which is why most moderm music really stinks nowadays. Non one cares for the technique(If you love music, love everything that goes into it) only the "Flair" and "Show."
As a musician for himself, that's fine, but if he's gonna take the responsibility of a child's musical growth and joint health by teaching, then he has every obligation to know what techniques to use to avoid damage, and to know the terminology at the very minimum. Taking lessons from him would inevitably cost this child's parents a great deal of money and wouldn't pass him in the most rudimentary drum exam. Unacceptable.
I came across this video like 2 years ago not knowing who this was and thought it was sick and now I just came back across it and realizing ITS LEGIT CONNOR DENNIS definitely one of my favorite drummers
crazy dude, I took lessons too. The second time I was there he took it off muttering something about it being a prototype and not wanting to mess it up. I asked him and he said some guy had it made and he didn't like it and so he took it. The mb20 was a 20 inch I think. He also had a a crash off to the right of his ride for part of one lesson.
It’s not hard to see here the passion and care that this teacher has. Because of the connection between teacher and student the outcome will be priceless.
I love Aaron Gillespie!!! When I was at Teen Mania doing my internship, he came to perform for us during Chapel and that was part of his solo tour!!! He was incredible!! His heart for the Lord is just inspiring! Aaron don't listen to these people on here, God is proud of you and you are inspirational to so many people in not just music but in the Christian Walk! People learn to keep your comments to yourselves! If you don't have anything nice to say just don't say it at all Cuz its rlly annoying

He writes fantastic parts that accommodate the music his band plays. That's the important part! Anyone can learn a song and say "I can play that." Can you write it though? Well done Aaron.
ohhhhhhh yes. those... snares... sound... awesome....... i love mine though. its got some nice pop and then just a little bit of overtones and thats what i love :)
Indeed I'll be nervous too is Aaron G, You're lucky too. Besides I've seen some of your band videos and you are rally good and you've improved a lot, so congratulations, and good work.....and if you meet again with Aaron G, give him my best, that Im a fan of his work during Underoath and The almost.
Connor how the hell did you get to practice and learn with aaron? He's deff one of your favorite drummers growing up cuz I see some of Aaron's influence in your playing. Your going to become one of the best of all time cuz your only being 21 n seeing how far ahead of the game you are and how amazing of a drummer you already are. Yup il be telling my grand kids about connor denis while I'm teaching them how to play drums 40 years from now. Can't wait to see beartooth live to see you play.
Hey man, how do you guys like to tune your drums and what heads do you like? The snare sounds awesome!! How do you get that "cracky" sound? I do have a maple 7x14.

Not to discredit him or say he is a bad drummer but when you both played in this video everything you did sounded better simply because you did not try to kill your drums. Your technique was great and it showed in your playing. Trying to hit your drums that hard to me is careless and poor use of dynamics when the instrument has so much to offer.
That kids the drummer for Beartooth now, crazy
are you shitting me?
xXEzYmOnEyXx Nope, hes the touring drummer for Beartooth. Played drums for their latest album, his names Connor Denis

Why is this fun to listen to? I'm not even a drummer but I appreciate Underoath and Aarons skills.
Coz the dudes a serious skin and stick abuser, its great
because aaron is battling with this kid for real
@KRL Productions L R L L R L R R
@KRL Productions Love you too buddy

It’s wild watching this video knowing where you are now. Pure talent
Such an effective style of teaching. I watch this a lot.
So many people hating on Aaron, while they are just sitting at home, not touring the world
Right? They just hatin cause they can't keep a beat to save their lives 🤣
Josh112096 it’s not hating his drumming. He’s good, just the endless bashing and breaking cymbals every show though? That’s not drumming. That’s abuse to an instrument.
NathanDrums that’s rock n roll mannnn
@@nathandrums0 he can afford the new cymbals an drum heads. I wouldnt worry about it
Matt Glidewell that wasn’t the point of my comment lol. He’s good and can afford it sure, but the reason his style is frowned upon is because it’s so loud and hard hitting that you almost can’t even enjoy it. When I play live I hit hard but I also don’t abuse my instrument.
Arron is so good. But
This kid has some
Talent! Great job
You rock man. You're definitely blessed to have lessons from such a seasoned player.
Amazing. The both of you played off each other perfectly. Love this. You are truly an amazing drummer.
Aaron proves over and over to be my all time favorite drummer. I got to see him live on his worship tour and he is AMAZING!
This is some awesome drumming.
Damn what a privilege that would be to learn or atleast hone existing skills with such a power house drummer.
You're so lucky. I would kill to take lessons from my favorite musician on earth
If you are referring to what we were doing around :40, we were doing something called crazy eights, which is where you do 8 strokes on the right hand, 8 strokes with the left, then 16 with the right, followed by 8 on the left, 8 with the right, and 16 on the left.

I couldn't agree more man. Very well said! Thanks for watching!
I love that you're an A7X fan!
Matheus Akira Funayama Welcome to the internet, where everyone could be better than everyone else, they just choose not to be
As far as teaching lessons is concerned having proper technique is much more important than creativity and feeling.
nick payne yet he’s the one touring the world and making a living while a standard drum teacher is in a small room all day making 25$ a lesson. Right
everyone hating. yet both of them are touring now.
this is awesome! I bet it was a great experience learning from Aaron.
man i wish i could take lessons from him .... aaron teaching aaron
What I can say is those drums are awesome
Aaron Gillespie is probably my favorite musician, he's an awesome drummer, great songwriter and most important he has a love for the lord, god is using him for good things and has been since the beginning, he inspires me to play music for the lord and shows you cab keep faith and play music.
Aaron's take on drumming, out of typical norm.
Learned a lot from him,....student....watch out for this young man!!! Rock-in!!!!
Dang! Both Arron and the student kill it in this session.
Wow. I just went to look at your channel as I was curious to find out how incredible you are as a drummer and how great your technique is. I am really just shocked that you have zero videos of yourself drumming on there. Great backing to your comment.
Remembered watching this when i was in highschool, then now im 30 i recently found out he is drumming for beartooth.awesome!
It's funny how everybody gets all technical and becomes a judge drummer.
OMG! you have no idea how glad i'm to see someone else see that right and wrong is subjective. Thank you for this!
Crazy how effortlessly he makes it look
Its fun to thing that this guy played a huge roll in the influence in my musical journey.
Well, that just inspired me to practice! Thank you!
This is just awesome dude! You're so good too! Keeping up with Aaron is a hard thing to do and you nailed it! Nice work! :)
And now i miss my drum teacher.. i love How i Can See their passion!

I think this is fantastic . Great to see the work being put in . Well done

I love this!!

every comment is about how many hate comments there are, yet I have only found one, and it was more of a back-handed compliment. Shut the fuck up about the "haters," I don't see any of them anywhere.
But just to say something... This DOES show solid technique, just not the traditional technical fundamentals of music theory that we're all taught in music school. In the end though, it's not about who has the most technical foundation, it's about who has the most entertaining chops. He has a cool style, he's obviously not restricted to 4x4 as a lot of popular drummers are, and that alone is a huge leg up on 95% of "drummers" in general. Period.
He's not a session musician, he's a member of a band, right? He doesn't NEED traditional fundamentals, he has his own style.

He writes fantastic parts that accommodate the music his band plays. That's the important part! Anyone can learn a song and say "I can play that." Can you write it though? Well done Aaron.
Aaron's kit has the best rack tom sound I've ever heard.
ohhhhhhh yes. those... snares... sound... awesome....... i love mine though. its got some nice pop and then just a little bit of overtones and thats what i love :)

those snares sound so fucking dope
OMG!!!!!!!!
Speechless!
:)
"were you rushing or were you dragging"
Damn this video+the comment section is kinda legendary. I love reading reading these comments now.
real question is
what are the specs on both those drums? The snare the kid is playing sounds amazing. And that's coming from a camera
i think it sounds amazing...because it does
Hey man, how do you guys like to tune your drums and what heads do you like? The snare sounds awesome!! How do you get that "cracky" sound? I do have a maple 7x14.
how awesome would this be if the sets were miked?
those drums are the most explosive i've ever heard.
While his dynamics may not be the most efficient, when it all comes down to it, writing a good song is the most important and relevant skill any drummer or just musician could have, with that being said, aaron is one of the greatest drummers of all time. The drum lines he wrote were incredible.
Now they're on tour together :)

Whos care?
He looks so pissed when playing lol
that kid is good! he's got skill!!!
I wouldn't say he's my teacher, but he does offer lessons every now and then, and I try to take that opportunity whenever I can!
This would be a dream come true omfg
que honor estar ahi con Aaron
They are awesome
The beat from "Issac" love that!
Watching in 2024, two 🐐s right there
Ahhhhh! so much skill!
