The exploration of faith, life and death and addiction here is flanagan's most personal, incredibly different to, yet still holding on to the poignant dramatic monologues and the use of horror as a tool to flesh out characters which make the haunting series so perfect. mike's major stephen king influence really screams in this as he shows us once again the scope of horror as a genre. placing characters in these situations and in the setting of fear as a storyteller brings out truths to them that no other facet of human emotion could reveal which is just absolutely gorgeous and traumatising and cathartic to consume as the audience. no hidden ghosts hear just a primal horror. religion is freaking scary:)) beverly keane is probably the most terrifying villain in forever and we all probably have one of her in our circles. would love for you take a look at more flanagan and horror that clicks into this side, loving these reactions!!

You know what the ingredients are, but that’s okay because you just get to enjoy the meal, rather than having strange flavors jump out at you that you weren’t expecting. The writing, camera work, and acting take center stage, and it’s much like you all noted where the supernatural material is primarily happening in the background. Not one thing overshadows another, it really does feel like Flanagan’s best work.

A popular Asian/Filipino folklore that every Filipino has heard from their parents and a lot of villagers believe to be true. A Shape shifting human/vampire that turns into a demon with wings at Midnight and sucks blood out of its victims. It dies in the sun and does not like garlic or salt. I know it’s not as talked about as the other 3 series, but I highly suggest watching Flanagans most recent series The Midnight Club. It didn’t get many streams and nobody talks about it but I loved it, even though it has a clearly different vibe.

I love a TV series that feels like an adaptation from a play, especially if it has something to say.
Flanagan chooses the moments well where his characters voice their (his) ideas, provocations and sometimes politics, while keeping the tone intensely personal and authentic.
Btw that color grade in coordination with the music score is genius tone setting.

Oh I'm SO excited y'all are watching this! I found your channel through your Hill House series and I was hoping you'd eventually make your way to this one!
Some notes for this show: This isn't technically part of the "Haunting Of" saga, so you don't need to look for hidden ghosts--there aren't any. This show is a lot less horror and a lot more psychological horror. Also, a fun fact: Mike Flanagan signed on to do Hill House with netflix, and they wanted him to do Bly Manor, and he agreed to do it only if they allowed him to make Midnight Mass, because this is his passion project. Mike is a recovering alcoholic and grew up as an altar boy in the Catholic Church, of which he now carries immense catholic guilt and trauma. This show was his way to cope with what he went through as a child, which led him to drinking.
Also Oak, don't feel too bad: I've never hated a character the way I hate Bev Keane, and concurrently, I think Hamish Linklater deserved an Emmy for his portrayal of Father Paul--what an outstanding and charismatic character!
Here's all the actors who reappear from Hill House & Bly:
    - Carla Gugino (Olivia Crain / The Narrator) - The Judge
    - Rahul Kohli (Owen) - Sheriff Hassan
    - Samantha Sloyan (Steve's wife) - Bev Keane
    - Annabeth Gish (Mrs Dudley) - Dr. Sarah Gunning
    - Kate Siegel (Theo / Viola) - Erin Greene
    - Alex Essoe (Perdita) - Mildred Gunning
    - Henry Thomas (Hugh / Henry) - Ed Flynn
    - Robert Longstreet (Mr. Dudley) - Joe Collie

Dude the Brady Bunch was on in the 70s and that actress was probably in her 30s back then. Mrs. Brady would be in her 80s at this time--it ain't her.
I never thought I'd think or say it, but I think this series is even better than Hill House. I guess Mike worked on this script for like 10 years, and it shows. The actor who plays the priest does such an amazing job. I've only ever seen him in the TV show The Newsroom and the movie The Big Short. Flannagan is set to do I think two more series, one of which is based on A Turn of the Screw, and I think there may be yet another adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower directed by him, I would assume in show or limited series form.
This guy has done so much to reinvigorate, reinvent and raise the level of quality for horror and mystery/thriller, I'm looking forward to anything he does in the future. Glad you guys are watching this one, and so soon after Bly Manor.
Oh yeah and I don't think there's meant to be any "hidden" background easter egg creatures or ghosts in this one, it's just pretty much straight-forward.

    • @ct6852
      @ct6852 Год назад +1

I think he was referring to the Brady movies from the 90's. The show based on Turn of the Screw was The Haunting of Bly Manor. I think it was released two or three years ago. This fall he has one coming out on The Fall of the House of Usher.

The horror element of this show is not the jump scares or visuals. Real horror is the way people are depicted in this show. The horror of what a human can do when they are at their lowest, or forced into fight or flight situations. The show is one of the best slowburns I've watched that pays off at the end.
