You know what, I am actually happy that description from Netflix was the VAGUEST description ever.
i remember the trailer having a teeny tiny bit of detail to the story, it was very vague still

Agreed, and I can't believe I'm saying that given that Hill House was so good. But, he spent 10 years developing this story, and it shows.

Ordinary time is the part if the year where the Catholic Church isn’t observing anything special. Basically all of the time that it’s not Lent (leading up to Easter) or Advent (leading up to Christmas). I grew up in the Catholic Church but no longer consider myself religious. Love that you are starting this show!!

This is my favorite Flanagan series, but I could say "It's one of his best!" about all 4 I've seen. My second favorite is very close behind, and it's all 3. I'm so happy we get to watch both reactions (bridgeco and horror bandwagon) simultaneously, too!
Hamish Linklater ( the priest) acting in this series is so good.

One of Flannagan's best shows. This is up there with Fall of the House of Usher and Haunting of Hill House. I really think you two will love it!

In 2021 i was super sick with Covid. Bored of all the usual TV stuff i normally watch so I decided to watch this. And i was blown away at how great it was. Every episode it will get better and better. Sooo fkn gooodsd
Most of the cast in here was on Bligh Manor and youll see them all again in House of Usher.
He uses the same core cast in most of his shows.
Also, Rileys dad is the kid from ET, in case anyone didnt state it.
erin “the pregnant girl” is played by mike flannigans wife! kate siegel she acts in a lot of his stuff it’s pretty neat

Lent is the “time” in the liturgical calendar before Easter(Resurrection Sunday) and Advent is the “time” before Christmas. The time in between or leading up to those two feasts is Ordinarily time. That was a basic description as from my understanding as a cradle Roman Catholic.
One of my absolute favorite Flanagan shows yet. So haunting, creepy and well written. I love everything about it. I'm not Catholic but was raised in a very religious area and related to so much in the show. Totally excited to watch again with you!

Yes, Riley's dad is the dad from Haunting of Hill House....and ET! Mike Flanagan also does Midnight Club....it's pretty good too.
Yes, that is the dad from Hill House. Flanagan reuses a lot of actors so you'll see a lot from Hill House. The Doctor was Ms. Dudley and the drunk was Mr. Dudley (the caretakers), Bev Keene was Steven's wife, Erin (Flanagan's wife) was Theo, the judge played the mom. The Sheriff was in Bly Manor and Riley, his brother, and Leeza (girl in the wheelchair) were all in Midnight Club. Samantha Sloyan plays Bev so well. She really make you hate her.
So excited for this series. This had such an unexpected turn, an underrated gem.

Yes so happy you finally got to this, and yes it is a slow burn but amazing monologues and acting, one of my absolute favorite shows past years, just you wait for things to come :)

Yes that’s young dad from haunting of hill house. Mike Flanagan uses the same actors in every project. Including his real life wife who played Theo in hill house and the pregnant woman in this show

This show is great! Ms. Keane is the actress that played Steve’s wife in The Haunting of Hill House. While she does a great job in this, the priest, Paul Hill, is amazing! He deserved more credit and even some award for his performance in this.
This show has a strong Stephen King vibe and I didn’t realize how much I missed that until this show came out.
Can’t wait to get more of this show! I could binge the reactions of this just as much as I could binge the show!

I finally got around to watching this show over the summer, and I really enjoyed it and found myself wanting to keep on watching the next episode and ultimately ended up binging the season in a couple of days. I hope you all enjoy it as it continues from here!

Fun fact: Mike had this story WAY before he even did Hill House. He wanted to save this project until he had a chance to make it the way he wanted and envisioned😁

Referring to communion as “the church snack” had me dying. Communion/The Lord’s Supper have semi-different rules about who can and shouldn’t take communion, although, at least in the churches I have been a member of, no one has been barred, lol. I think that Catholic Churches seem to be a bit more strict in the guidelines of who can partake. In the Protestant Church that I attend, you have to be aware of what it means and understanding that communion is a sacred tradition and representative of the body of Christ. The views on communion vary pretty wildly as far as believing the wafer and wine (or goldfish and grape juice if you’re Protestant 😅) becomes the literal body of Christ inside your body. 🌈The more you know!💫
I once had a horrible sore throat and was still made to go to church, and when I said I wasn't up for communion, they told me I had to to not make them look bad... Grape wine tasted horrible, and I choked on the wafer... 😂😂😂😂
While it's a little slower getting started than some of Flanagan's other shows, once things kick into full-gear I'd say this is my favorite of all his stuff! So excited you two are jumping in. :)

Just when they said 'prodigal son' near the end there it made me think of the TV show of the same name. I think you both would enjoy both the cast and story of it plus there's only 2 seasons. Another good TV show I think you would both appreciate is EVIL. Again the cast is incredible but the story is just twist and turns and creepy stuff. Worth looking into guys 😀 we all love a horror/thriller afterall 😀

Riley was in prison. He didn't have any money to just live on the mainland. You have to have money to move (and then live) anywhere, and people generally don't hire ex-cons. Pretty sure he's living there because there's nowhere else for him to go. Honestly, his future (long term, outside the scope of the show- no spoilers) was exceptionally bleak.
Casting spoilers for who played who on what show:
That is the dad from Hill House! Young dad, and also the uncle from Bly. Miss Keane is also Leigh Crain, Joe (drunk guy with the awesome dog) is Mr. Dudley, both from Hill House. The doctor giving the ultrasound to Erin Green played Mrs. Dudley. The voice of the judge who sentenced Riley to prison was the mom from Hill House. I know you caught a couple of other regulars, like the sheriff, Erin Green, and Riley's dad (Ed), and that's all I can call up offhand.
So, you're saying I have a reason to not hate Mondays for a bit. Sweet

Just be warned, there's a lot of dialogue, monologues, storytelling, etc. in this. Personally, I think this show is great but some people get put off because people are speaking without explosions going off or car chases happening, so...
It feels personal, because it was to Flanagan, and I loved every minute of it. Also, I'm an idiot and never put two and two together as to why the Father is wearing the gold chasuble.

This and Usher are super close as my #2 Flanagan show behind Hill House. I think Usher sneaks by it just because Flanagan's tendency to monologue feels more at home in a series about Poe. And in this series there were a couple scenes that made me cringe a bit at the melodramatic speeches.
Bev reminds me of that old lady from Gremlins.
