I figured it would be best to start incorporating my CHEAT & RECOVER technique with an exercise the majority of you are already most likely experimenting with. The Barbell Shoulder Press. Once mastered, cheat reps can really help you break through a muscle and strength building plateau, especially if you don't have a workout partner or spotter.
Be sure to comment below which exercise you would like to see next! LFGOOOO!

i am pretty stuck on 30 kg. Will try today, ty Scott!
@@kennystarfighter9899 with this technique you’ll be up to 40kg in no time!
The fact that you still manage to keep up your main grind while pushing your other deep passions with equal fury...fucking impressive and inspiring mate! Incredibly helpful info on the overhead press, as well. I have issues with this one due to neck issues caused by chronic shitty posture.
Thanks! That really means a lot.
Have you tried to really focus on keeping your core solid and your legs and glutes flexed when doing this movement?
Been watching your videos from a decade ago they still hold up appreciate you 💯
Always informative. No BS. Straight to the point. Thank you Scott for everything you do!
My pleasure man! Thanks for the support!
man, it is amazing to follow your channel for so many years
I started watching you in college, a noobie lookinbg for exercise form videos
9 years later, I follow you for the "hidden" knowledge of experienced lifters, to still continue to add lean natty muscle after years of training
appreciate you for all the knowledge you've bestowed upon us all these years
stay hard!
Appreciate all the support man! Always learning more - myself included! That’s why I can still put out content to keep teaching you guys as well :-D
Good to see you great video! Those full range shoulder press reps are brutal.
Got to do full range to keep that shoulder mobility healthy!
I'll never forget the C&R days... brutal, definitely something I couldn't do often as my joints were aching!
Yeah man, the routines for cheat and recover are next level intense! Definitely requires a bit more rest and recovery!
Herman Nation!
HERMANATION! LFGOOO!
Scott has been giving the very best advice for the longest time and people still wonder why they miss a lift or lose reps in a hard set
Thanks Scott for another great video man!
Thanks for watching! More coming soon
Wow, that's so wonderful ❤ thank you for sharing the video ❤
Don’t ever change, bro!
Don’t plan on it! Thanks bro.🙌🙌🙌
I’m sure Scott could’ve easily been a top 5 in the Olympia with his genetics work ethic, dedication for well over a decade
I appreciate the kind words man! Always putting in that hard work!
The baah bell overhead press
Huge fan, thanks
My pleasure!
This legend is still here after a decade 🫡
Yes sir! 💪🏻
Well said and good to know on those workouts
Thanks Luis!
I've stopped working out for about 3 years. Im heavier now but i definitely plateaued on OHP . Im gonna try this method when i get back into it.
I think this goes for any kind of exercise. Cheating to the point of no longer working the muscle that you want to target is problematic, as is cheating to the point of causing instability and increasing the risk of injury.
Lifting with proper technique is important only for the sake of not hurting yourself, but if adjustments must be made to make it work, go ahead.
At the end of the day, the muscles don't know or experience the same as the mind. As long as it's getting stimulated enough to respond, that's really all that matters.
Just my opinion. 29 years old, Male, been going to the gym for many years as a teenager/young adult, then had a period off, and now been active again for the last 7 months or so.
The style of OHP I use is what's sometimes called the "Press 2.0", where it's not quite strict, but it isn't a push-press. You do a hip of hip hinge in order to create some more momentum out of the bottom while still putting most of the work in the shoulders.
I mean.. if you are using a little momentum.. it’s still a push press haha, that’s not a bad thing though!
@@ScottHermanFitness I mean I think of a push press as a downward dip, as opposed to a small front hinge where your legs don't move, but yeah, neither one is a strict press.
Even with a damaged shoulder I still love this exercise. Nowhere near 135 (yet) but I'll get there if I can.
Shoulder press for sure has to be thee hardest exercise to progress! 😂🥲 I’m a huge fan of the cheat & drop set method! 🙌
Been doing this until failure, i take my time since i haven't mastered proper form.
Very happy to hear that! Your master it sooner than later!
Am I the only one who does these sitting down with a slight recline? I have never struggled at all since the back is stabilized which helps the arms and shoulders remain more stabilized during motion.
Same. I had an injury whilst warming up (at friggin 30% 1rm...) of regular OHP and I haven't done them since. I did start doing seated shoulder barbell presses though, and slowly but surely gotten stronger and stronger, up to 90kg now, my old OHP was only ever 60kg. I much prefer the stability, feel like I can focus on my shoulders better.
The more you decline the more you bring chest into the movement.
Glad to see, you, recovered from your injury!
@@ScottHermanFitness 2 replaced discs and all. Pretty proud of myself lmao. Just wish I could utilise cheat reps but knowing me I'd break something doing them on shoulders anyway.
@@ScottHermanFitness yeah. I recline it just enough to clear my face with the bar. Only downside to sitting for the barbell shoulder press.
It's OK to cheat but not yourself
This is true! That’s why we always go full range of motion.🔥🔥🔥
@@ScottHermanFitnesswhat do u mean by that
Love overhead press hit 135 for 10 paused a week ago. Im gonna try your method once I hit a plateau it’s does seem more logical to cheat for ohp with a push press and slowing down the eccentric than a “conventional” dropset.
Don't cheat anyone in anything even ourselves in exams but it's ok to cheat in some exercises.
Damn right man! You’ve got the right idea!
My shoulders just can't cope with barbell presses, have to use dumbbells in a neutral grip
Nothing wrong with that! You could still utilise this.. although with dumbbells you would be better off seated to move more weight. Might be worth working on your shoulder mobility too!
@@ScottHermanFitness Yea, I do them seated! I have Big Loz as my program writer so hes pretty on the ball with stuff like that.
I'm just a bit weird with BB vs neutral grip in general, I have more power that way and in person trainers and remedial specialists have all been weirded out by my arms and legs acting in ways that don't make sense lol.
I doubt the shoulders can be fixed, the left one especially is like theres a tooth from a cog in there and so at one point its a big old clunk, lots of tendonitis in the long head and waiting for plastic surgery on the chest on that side from seat belt damage in a car crash.
The right shoulder has issues pulling at elongation if thats a word, so like a chin up position, need to have the palms facing me to not strain it, but then theres no issues with it full stretched with a heavy dumbbell, so I'm never really too sure on whats going on and neither are the people I speak to about it all. Theres been improvements though since the beginning of the year when I started my journey
Lost 75lbs and gained some decent muscles as a 40 something year old, so its possible for anyone if its possible for this old broken skinny fat dude that could barely walk lol
Cheers Scott
@@TheKruxed oh man sounds like there is a lot going on with that shoulder lol! Congrats on the weight loss man! Awesome work! Age is just a number 🔥💪🏻
@@ScottHermanFitness I'll let you know how it goes, cheers
Try the Z press. Using little weight but without cheating.👍💪
Yeah that’s good too! But not for this purpose ;-)
Damn your still alive used to watch you when i was a kid
Alive and looking as good as ever 😉
Check out what I’ve been building for the last 18months. www.wagmigame.io
What happened to cheaters never prosper? Cheaters never win? And, winners’ never cheat?
Those all still ring true.. but not for this lol
Thx for sharing

So close! #3rd
Old school ending
Are we not going to address this??
Yeah man! Taking it back to the good old days!
It's not called "Cheat Reps", it's called "Push Press"! 😅
Yes a push press on a standing shoulder press is the same as a cheat rep. However. With the cheat rep there is a bit more focus on controlling a slower negative. But yeah. Basically the same 🙌
Great
The only good cheating is in video game codes and cheats because it makes the game more fun.
Scott, I want to make a workout request: do a video on Bruce Lee's workouts. I'm currently watching one of his later movies: The Fist Of Fury.
Haha I remember back in the day searching up cheat codes! And thanks for the suggestion!
It's OK to cheat on your diet during holidays. Let's live a little. My best workouts came after I destroyed a Thanksgiving meal
Cheat and recover barbell rows slapped
Scott no hate, why did you chose to not progress your physique? it has been intermediate for literally a decade and i'm sure you have the knowledge to get it further
I think you mean legendary, not intermediate. You do realise I’m about 10lbs heavier than I was a decade ago? I’m still progressing man. I’m just doing it naturally 😎
@@ScottHermanFitnessyou sure Scott? You look smoll
👍👍👍
👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Is it okay to cheat on my boyfriend?
Only if he doesn't know how to change a flat tire. Better off finding a new man anyways. 😛
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Cheating is amazing
Its a great tool to have in your arsenal as if you ever hit a plateau!
First viewer
BOOM! You made it!
Natty techniques now 😂!
Scott - get on PEDs and let’s see you take it to the next level lol
Wow I haven't watch Scott Hermann since maybe 7-8 years ago!
What happened? Seems to have lost a lot of his gains...
