Guys, if your shoulder mobility sucks, or you feel so much discomfort while at it. Avoid it. If you force it just because you watch videos like this, then it’s gonna do you more bad than good and you will end up regretting your decision to force yourself into doing it. Mike is an experienced/advanced body builder and you should be wise enough not to engage yourself with everything you see him do.

I can’t believe I’m about to be 52 , never married , no kids . A couple good relationships I should have stayed with but no regrets. I just like being pumped and looking halfway decent and being able to be physical enough to remodel homes . It’s harder for me to keep the muscle on when I get really busy from now until august but that kind of the fun of it right ? Sometimes we re lean , sometimes we’re shredded to the bone and sometimes we’re carrying some weight because it feels right for a time then we get tired of it and diet down and use cardio to just to get an ounce of satisfaction . I still can’t believe 52 is coming

BTN Presses could really be a useful tool in treating shoulder mobility issues, rotator cuff pains or other existing impingements. The trick is not go heavy and stick with the tempo.
The anatomy approach : The stronger models, the standard models. While yes it’s true that you are capable of pushing more in the scapular plane, the function of shoulders isn’t just about movements within the scapular plane. Shoulders being a ball socket joint actually allow you a 3 dimensional plane to work across.
The scapular plane is a stronger model however to be able to push above your neck and behind it are as much a standard requirement. You must not go as heavy on these however compared to standard scapular plane presses unless you’ve been training for atleast a year.
BTN presses could also help address any issues you may be having with your rhomboids, traps and the major chunk of your upper back. It’s because these muscle groups together actually provide you the firm core to push from when you have entered the behind the neck plane.
Yes it’s not normal for the human body, yet it must be able to work along.
A small perk : BTN works your upper chest too 🤭Train safely.

    • @bryanholzer2782
      @bryanholzer2782 2 года назад +5

It's not a bad exercise. The major problem is that your average gym goers are so chest focused and neglect their upper back strength and shoulder mobility/stabilization to the point where they're very disproportionate and this exercise will accentuate their imbalance. The other reason is because you can overload on the exercise without realizing you're hurting yourself until you discover you can barely move your arm the next day. A proper progression in increasing the weight is necessary if you've never done it before.

@@MikeOHearnTitan True that mike, I started serious lifting around 16 and now I’m 20, if I remember correctly I’m pretty sure you were the first person I watched on RUclips about bodybuilding and lifting, I know your not an actual bodybuilder and you lift for longevity which is obvious but 4 years later I’ve stuck with your program and philosophy’s and I will continue to do that as long as I lift. Thank you for all the great information and positivity 👍🏽

Yes, Press From Behind The Neck is also an almost certain way to get a shoulder injury! Doing press behind the neck can be dangerous. That exercise besides Upright Rowing, especially heavy going heavy with a barbell, can cause serious injury to the shoulder joints. I should know because I've got one from first performing press behind the neck; it's a risky multi-joint exercise. Maybe one of the very few risky exercises; almost all exercises are safe, but not press behind the neck.
Overhead pressing is good, and productive. It is much safer to do press from in front of the neck (in italics); regular standing presses with dumbbells, or barbell. There is a natural path for the weight to travel as you press overhead, and descend the dumbbell, or barbell. If not immediate, then eventually performing presses behind the neck can get you injured; and when you do your mental state is going to suffer, not just your capability for function, and strength. And mass.

    Really good information!
I think I applied these same basic principles to the barbell bench press and particularly a wider grip barbell bench press.
I am 55 now and competed in drug free powerlifting (ADFPA) from 1987-1991.
I didn't train for years but started training again for health in my early 40s.
All I did was dumbbells for years because of mobility, range of motion, shoulders, etc
After covid I started getting a home gym and more serious.
I began experimenting with a barbell and it's bench variations using only the bar.
I couldn't touch the bar to my chest at first but I kept practicing and slowly adding weight.
I hear all these people say not to bench too wide because it's bad on the shoulders but I am benching wide just fine at 55 with no problems after benching really heavy for years as a young man.
Mind you I couldn't get the bar to my chest when I began.
I apply the same principles you guys were explaining in these video and now I may start overhead pressing too.

I've been doing so much youtubing for behind the neck. there is so much controversy
I simply need more accessory exercises to help my front strict press. I have been stuck on a 230 lb 1RM for 2 months. I really want to hit a 275 OHP by the end of the year.
Been doing Bradford presses... but now I'm considering adding simply behind the neck presses to help out too. but there is so much controversy around it
