I really appreciate your videos. I have a series that I have been trying to get done for over four years. I used to be a storyteller, and want to start writing instead. So far every time I have told anyone about my story series, they get super excited to hear more. When I go to write on my story, I get overwhelmed, because of not understanding the process or even how to outline the story. I also deal with predominantly inattentive type ADHD, so getting motivated or organized has been difficult because again, I didn't understand the process. Your videos are thorough and easy to understand. Since I found your videos three months ago, I have made more progress than I have in the entire four years. Now, I have gone from random scene clips on a thumb drive to a full 40k word count and an organized outline for the other two books! Thank you so much for your time and guidance!
I loved seeing your process for proofreading, Bethany! It actually made me look forward to sitting with a proof of my book and reading it to mark it all up in the future! 😅😂😁
I'm planning to get my first proof copy of my first book next month, and this makes me super excited to read my book in a different format! Thank you for sharing this and for making these videos!
I just came across your videos. I have edited and self-published my own short story anthology and line-edited three novels for a local self-published author. One thing I noticed as I was doing final proofing is that I'd occasionally find a word space before the first word in a new paragraph. It's easy to search for two word spaces in a document, but I don't know of a quick way to search for single spaces at the beginning of a new paragraph. When finalizing the text in Word, the copy is proofed, then once each story is in layout, I'll proof again, and the final check is with a proof copy of the book - but there are always stragglers that somehow slip through. I started out as a proofreader way back when, so I do all the proofing myself. I enjoyed this video and will be checking out your others as well.
Thank you so much for your in depth video. I'm still not done with my manuscript, but already I feel the editing and proofreading process looming over my head (I already started taking notes what details to watch out for later on).
Have you tried using "Edit out loud" its an app on the google play store. It reads out the book to you. I read the book along with the auto-generated voice. And it helps a lot to catch a lot of typos, and what not.
That sounds so cool! I'm a heavy visual learner and with audio I tend to zone out so for me personally I'd probably fail at proofreading that way, but it sounds like a really awesome tool for further back in the editing process! I have also set up Microsoft Word to read out loud (and google docs does too I've been told) so if I can remember how to set that up I might totally add that to my editing process :D
Thank you for this video Bethany!! I really enjoyed it and may try your process when I get to that point in the writing/editing process (forever in the drafting stage I'm really slow). Also thanks for your videos on formatting. I use Google Docs for drafting but I've found some of the formatting things you showed in Word I can do also in Google Docs. You are be far one of my favorite Authortubers and I appreciate you. I'm so excited for you and The Enchanted Crown!! Preordered it the moment the preorder went Live. Praying God's blessings on you and your beautiful book.💕
Loved this look into your proof reading process! I'm trying to develop a more methodical system so this had a ton of great tips I'll try out to refine my own system! Thank you for sharing! P.s. so so so so super excited for TEC!!!
I loved watching this! I'm approaching my edit phase real soon and I've been loving seeing how ppl do it and their progress 😌 you'll get it all done in time!
@@BethanyAtazadeh Ohh good! I knew you'd be able to do it! Even though my focus is flash and micro, I found your process thorough and helpful. Also, I'm aware of word and phrase over use & repetitiveness but never heard the term word echoes. The latter appears to be more subtle to spot, more specific. And I spied a Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino on your desk. Have you tried the Brown Butter Caramel? ;)
Newbie here. So you have a printed book ... I am assuming it's an advance copy of the actual book that you use for editing... is this correct? What software are you using in writing? (I guess I can search your previous videos too :) ) Thanks for this video - it's very helpful
Just starting out and I've finished my first manuscript. How do you get a printed copy of your own book like that to proofread? Also, do you hire anyone to help with editing? Or do you do everything yourself?

Hey Bethany, I'm planning to order my proof copy from KDP here in the next few weeks and I was wondering, if I use their free ISBN, do they take care of the front matter for me? Or will I need to format that page into my manuscript? Thank you!
@@BethanyAtazadeh Yes, fair enough, although it's an ungainly contraction that's rarely used and can just as easily stand for 'it would' or 'it should' as for 'it had'.
Do you hire professional proofreaders? I'm asking because I had a highly professional copy editor, who went over my book twice and did a great job, and I wonder if I should just proofread myself or hire someone.
Personally no. I have a team who reads beforehand in exchange for a free copy and I proofread myself. I always find things no matter how good the copy edits are, a copy editor is just one person so they’re bound to miss things.
Dumb question but you publish your book, buy a copy for your self and then you do all the corrections you just did? If so, wouldn’t your book be published so everyone could buy it WHILE still making the corrections?
@@BethanyAtazadeh Thank for the tip. What I want is for the chapter to begin always on the right in a print copy , double side pages, for beta reader copies. James
Grammarly or something similar is obviously what Proofreaders use. I don't blame them. Using Grammarly cuts down the mistakes she will find and cut down on my correcting my roof draft.
I can't proofread. Grammarly tells you mistakes and makes word suggestions and sometimes rewrites a whole sentence for you and it is better and you just plug it in.
"Echoes" ahh, that's a good word for it. 😅

'It had' (7:25) doesn't have a contraction. 'I'd' is a contraction of I would, as used later in that same sentence.
