Hello, Bethany I have been following you channel for a while and love it congrats with all you are doing. You inspire others. I looked at the publish and thrive it looks amazing but I am a Children’s Book Indie author. Is there anything of this kind of training and wonderful material for us? I have not found one good children’s author that is open to help others in this way. Any thoughts?

I had a professor once tell me, "Some people just aren't cut out to be a writer," after a mental health crisis kept me from completing a string of assignments - with the heavy implication that I was _some people._ That really knocked the wind out of me and made me give up on my dreams for a while. I think what hurt most was that he was trying to be kind and give sincere advice - looking back though, he just didn't have a clue what I was going through or how I ended up in that situation. At the end of the day, I'm the only person who gets to decide who I am and what I'm capable of.

I have both an undergrad degree and a graduate degree in Creative Writing, and I had SO MANY experiences with professors who hated my writing (mostly that I wanted to write genre fiction instead of literary fiction or about vampires that they wouldn't comment on my actual writing style). It's too bad you didn't have others who could have influenced you along with her. I had plenty of them, too. But my MFA also made me stop reading for a while. I learned a lot in school, but writing is the best way to learn how to write.

Hi Bethany! I'm new here and I absolutely had a similar experience with a professor. Mine was my master's thesis advisor and I had unconditional trust that this person wanted what was best for me. And he didn't. I got seriously depressed and lost confidence in myself completely. It's still pretty fresh and I'm just starting the healing process. I really appreciate hearing that you went through something similar and most importantly that you did move past it.

Honestly, your video gave me a hope I didn't know I needed.... I just graduated... I wanna become an author but honestly speaking, my family finances are not in a place where I can take risks....
I am working on a novel for almost a year now since I was a student but I think the idea of becoming an author is making my mind go all over the place... I need to take things slow and work on the way... Nothing will change within a day... I know all these good words... Just needed a reminder when I was getting overwhelmed with the thoughts...
And the fact that so many people are becoming successful in this field while it feels like I'm the only one struggling with finance, makes me just lise my mind sometimes 😭😭😭

She HATED my thoughts about poetry (luckily we didn't have to write poetry for that class-it was a critical thinking class about poetry) and I got really discouraged. Thank you for this video!!! Discovered your channel and your self-publishing course a few months ago, and you've been so helpful and inspirational. I also was burned out after my MFA in 2017. Tried to traditionally publish for years with my YA thesis novel to crickets. Allowed myself to think I wasn't good enough to be an author until you (and a few other) channels helped me realzie publishing on my own is just as, if not more, viable than before. Publishing my debut next summer (even though it's fully edited and my cover design will be finalzied next month), gives me a full year to nail my website and mailing list and grow on social media before then. This video gives me hope and encouragement that I can one day be a full time YA author. THANK YOU, Bethany!!!!

As an author I truly love ❤️ and respect your author journey. I'm also an entrepreneur and looking to do both full time. I just published a book this May! 😊 Our backgrounds are similar, I published my first book Life's Reflective Twists in 2017. The other 3 books are educational for ESL students. Thanks for sharing your journey with us. I had a similar experience as a geology major and because my math skills weren't the best, a geology professor told me I should quit the major. I felt so discouraged that I did. It took some years before I found teaching ESL and took a while to fall in love with the profession. I'd never discourage my adult students. That's just horrible. I agree nurture instead of discourage. Now my goal is to do a book signing. Not sure how to go about that but it's my dream.

Inspirational as always. I'm on my journey to becoming a full-time author. I'm at the very start with a few pages left to finish my first draft. 400 pages long. I've got a whole series planned and more books in the works as well.
A lot of creative vision without the knowledge of publishing, promotion, or any beta readers and such. I know it will happen in time. It's one of my last real shots at working as well. Physical injuries make it harder to work long times. My mom who passed away a year ago always believed in my writing from the time I was young. She inspired me to keep going when I was close to giving it up.
RUclips is one of my other passions. I love creating things and helping people. Any suggestions on where I should go next with the first novel about to be done with the first draft? I have a good friend that's a professional editor and writer herself.
She's offered to help me because she believes in my writing too. I have a poetry page that just hit 10k followers. Uh, sorry for rambling on. So many questions I want to ask! Lol. Continue being awesome!

(10:09) That's similar to my experience in college studying studio art, and philosophy. The drawing "professor" was an unhelpful miserable hag, the painting "professor" might as well have been absent all semester, and the sculpture 'professor' was an unethical grader. Contrary to prevailing post-modern views, not everyone "deserves" an A. The ancient philosophy "professor" was the worst of the bunch. He only taught Plato (albeit a distorted version) and ignored the many other ancient Greek and Roman philosophers. What's more, I found out that the guy didn't have a PhD in philosophy, nor an MA in it, or even a BA in the subject. He only minored in philosophy in undergrad. The guy got the job due to a nepotistic connection with the department chair and was tenured to the college/university before that chair retired. It's because of absurd immoral bullsh*t like this that an increasing number of people believe college/university is one of the biggest scams of the post-modern era.

I dropped out of college because of the dean of the school! Okay so you know that University Experience course that is completely useless but most colleges are requiring now. Well my class was taught by the dean of the school and I had a question about my academic advisor because I had no clue how to contact them so of course I ask in this class. Well I had never met this person and I used the non gender pronoun 'them', trying to be polite right? Well instead of answering my question, the dean of the school decides to tell me that person is a him, and I should use the correct pronoun, because I should know, because I should have already met this person before. Again never met that person before and they didn't have a name that I had encountered before, so I no basis as to which pronoun to use and used 'them', it's not like a used 'her'. Well I finally got an answer to my question and got a meeting with the advisor, just for them to push the school's scheduling on me rather than hearing that I can't keep up with the schedule. I wanted to go from full time classes to part time. So during winter break when it came time to approve the student loans, I had been listening to Dave Ramsey for a week and was like no. I ain't going into this much debt for something I don't even like.

That’s right! The self publishing course. I purchased this but haven’t gone through it yet. I’ve scoured my email and can’t find it. 😔 I’m hoping I didn’t delete it on accident. If I did, what can I do? I’m sorry if it creates more work for you!

Oh nooo! I might first try the link in the pinned comment below this video, that should take you there and then you'd just have to figure out your login or get a new one. Worst comes to worst, you could email Sarra!

Thank you so much! Publish and Thrive will absolutely apply to children's books as well, since it's about publishing, not the writing itself. If you're asking more about the writing side of things, I'm not sure honestly. But you can always check out my free video series on writing children's books - it has everything I know! :) ruclips.net/p/PL3IFBPbxQRyqzp8b2u-tRHu6Lu2uvWnjw

HI, I've been following your journey for a while. I'm almost done with my chemical engineering degree and I'm wondering what to do with masters. I definitely don't want to do anything with my chemical degree but I'm wondering if it's worth it going for a creative writing or an editing degree.
