The issue with Amazon and affiliate approval surprised me. I am getting ready to publish my first book and want to upload it to several platforms but now, I am not sure. Great video! I have several books that novel rank quite high, and though I’ve been a published author for 8 years, I’ve just started with RUclips. Can’t wait to see where things end up. Yes passive income is like planting apple tree seeds, watering and keeping care of them and doing all the work in the beginning which can take a lot of work and can take months to a year or so but then the trees will grow and flourish into a massive apple tree orchid and now you don't have to do the work anymore, the apples will continue to bloom (income will keep coming even when you don't put the work in anymore cause you already did in the beginning of the process.)

Thank you for sharing this. Important for everyone to have more than one income stream, especially in these strange times. I am learning how to create a passive online income. Fiction writing is one stream I am working on. I look forward to gain more tips from you. Thank you.
A lot of great, useful info!!! It looks like a writer has to be an active, full-time marketer. Difficult to understand when a writer has time to write!
Thank you! And I agree, it's hard to find time. I have to set aside time for writing first thing before the marketing and business work, otherwise it doesn't happen!
Interested in the care packages. What do they include for the customer? What’s the earning like and how easy is it to implement? Love this channel btw thanks! X
can you self publish your book on Barnes and noble for free as it states free trial does it have a monthly membership?? or do they just take a percentage of your sales?
Goodness, you really have your career all put together. I don't even have half of what you do. I need to get my butt into gear. I just pulled my books from KDP because it says in order to have your books distributed through Barnes and Noble and such, you can't have them exclusive to Amazon. How are you putting yours into KDP and having them with other places too? I have been thinking about putting my books for sale through my website. I'm still learning how to use my website so there's that. But wow, you are a really good speaker and very informative. Thank you. This was very helpful for me.
KDP and Kindle Unlimited are actually two different things. You can publish on KDP and also publish wide. But if you sign up for Kindle Unlimited (which is a program KDP offers specifically for ebooks), then you're signing a contract to say they exclusively publish the ebooks (for as long as you're part of the program). That's how you publish on KDP and also wide. I just don't enroll my books in kindle unlimited if I want them to be published wide. Hope that makes sense, but definitely research it if you want to know more!
Bethany, thank you for making these. Such good information, presented clearly, and you are a great public speaker! Just dipping my toes into the author's world and your information is invaluable in navigating this daunting publishing process. My first ever children's book is coming out soon! I am equal parts nervous and excited! I went through a publishing company due to fear of the unknown this first time. But am really thinking hard about the publishing route for the other two I have written. 🤔😳😉 I was searching for information and found you. So glad I did!
Ahhh, I wonder what you would say to care packages/signed books as part of a Patreon offering. Were there specific reasons you separate them? Thanks for help thinking through some pieces of this process! :D
One question I had about working with a designer in regards to the corgi merch sales, does the designer get a portion of the sales going forward too with passive income? Or do you pay the designer up front and then you get the rest of the money going froward?
Hey a workaround for Amazon links is to apply to skimlinks. You can use their links to Amazon instead. Sovrn / viglink might also work. I don’t remember which one has Amazon in it.
This video is a gem for the all authors but especially someone trying to find there way. Regarding Ingram Spark do they also print children’s books? Do you know? I would assume so but I’ve put the info I use for kdp and keep getting stopped. There site is frustrating but I’m strong and determined lol. I’m going to watch some of your other video’s your information is so helpful. Thanks again!

I used to be an Amazon affiliate and they would constantly reject me for random things I wasn't aware of. So, people would click on affiliate links on my website, and I thought I'd be making something from it when I wasn't. When I'd go to look, they disqualified the sales for miscellaneous reasons or would close my account for not having sold anything. (This was way before I published any books).I see so many people doing well with them, but I just can't figure them out lol.
Definitely interesting to watch! I’m excited because I’ve been planning on doing P&T this next time, so I’m glad I watched this first! Saving this video to grab your link.
As I am just deciding what to use for website sales (feels like a big step), could you say what you use? I'm think WooCommerce for cost/low volume to start...
I got a really good deal to add a store on WIX (it was like $5). Otherwise I would’ve continued to add PayPal as a button because I’m all about saving money. I would never want to make money and then have to give it all to the website provider
What about selling your books through Bookshop.org instead? They have an affiliate program. I guess I don't don't know what their policies are for authors, though. I'm listing both Amazon and Bookshop links in my videos.
@@BethanyAtazadeh They are fairly new to me, too. But I placed an order for Christmas and it came quickly. The prices vary compared to Amazon, but they are usually pretty close!
I have incorporated my publishing co. I supply my isbn. pOD interactive books, eg colouring. How do I get consistency? Accounts with Amazon, B&N, Kobo, iBooks each have their own sizes, papers etc. showcasing my book products on my WP site, would then have to list each seller and differences in product Pod, & I’m guessing, more isbn for each. What to do? I haven’t published yet. Getting all products ready including SERIES OF 36 CHILDRE’S 32 PAGE illustrated books.
Thanks Bethany for your wonderful videos. Please can you help educate us about publishing in china. Information on the Chinese market is scarce. I learnt they have good platforms like @t, JD etc. Please can you educate us because china appears to be a big market that can boost sales. Thanks
It also depends on your niche or genre on how well you can generate the income. Plus, Amazon will punish you if your book is not exclusive with them. Meaning your ebooks and print on demands. If you sell the books directly with them and then put them on other publishing sites, they will send you a warning and kill your enrolment in their kdp select option.
not quite! KDP is not exclusive. Kindle Unlimited, a program offered by KDP for ebooks, is what is exclusive. As long as you don't enroll in kindle unlimited, you can publish on KDP and wide without an issue. If you enroll in KDP, then it's part of the contract that they offer ebooks there exclusively, but paperback can still be wide.
Hello. I got a question. I'm almost done with a book thats based on life experiences I've had. Sort of a autobiography/memoirs type thing. I have an editor thats helping me. Its my very first book and its taken quite a bit to write it. Anyway, I have other ideas for various topics on different books. I noticed that you have quite a few books youve written. My question is do you write one book at a time or are you the type to have more than one book project open at a time?
(1) You have to pay for the commercial license rights to do that, just fyi, it’s not something authors can do without permission. (2) I DO have merch with my covers on them lol
Omg...I have a corgi too! She is a tri-color. I just published 4 books on Amazon to help women recover from Narcissistic/Emotional Abuse. Now I need to switch my focus from writing to marketing/sales. If you have suggestions I would love to hear them :) Thanks!
I have a *publishing* course! I can totally give you the link. :) www.udemy.com/course/novel-self-publishing-and-marketing-masterclass/?referralCode=4D59A9B5BB7B69999003
Oh man it's so interesting to hear all the different streams of income. I'm sure my brain would totally melt trying to keep it all straight. I'd need to go full colour coded spreadsheet lol
So glad you liked it! oh my gosh yes, if I'd tried to start out with all of them at once, I would've felt the same way! But in my case, I added one at a time over the last four years, so it doesn't feel as huge when you approach them one at a time hehe
I hope you have it set up as a business, that all those payments go to the business. That why you can’t take advantage of business tax rates and all it’s possible deductions.
Cant you just klick on KDP's "Expanded Distribution" and they publish your book in different placed like kobo etc? I think I watched an IGTV the other day from an author explaining that they had problems with ingram spark and that they discovered the expanded distribution button on KDP during their effort to solve their problems with ingram.
Depends on if they’ll let you. I don’t have access to expanded distribution, and there are some limitations from what I understand, but yes it could absolutely be a good solution!
You’ll get more money from people watching the entire ad, than those who hit the skip button. Also, you get slightly more if they click on the ads before/during/after your video.
@@BethanyAtazadeh I know authors do it. But I think there’s something in the fine print about not being allowed too bc it’s like being paid twice for the same product.

Definitely interesting to watch! I’m excited because I’ve been planning on doing P&T this next time, so I’m glad I watched this first! Saving this video to grab your link.
Woohoo!! I'm SO excited for you!! I think you'll love it and I hope you'll let me know what you think of it after!
@@BethanyAtazadeh of course I will!
Thanks for sharing. Loads of potential!
Thank you!
Awesome! Do you have any tips on graphic novels?
I've never done a graphic novel, but I remember watching a youtube video about it once, so I bet you could find some great advice on here!
Thank you so much, very very helpful, 😊
You're very welcome! So glad you enjoyed it!
What about selling your books through Bookshop.org instead? They have an affiliate program. I guess I don't don't know what their policies are for authors, though. I'm listing both Amazon and Bookshop links in my videos.
I'd never heard of them before but they sound awesome! Definitely sounds worth looking into :)
Thanks
Bakers dozen!!! Go girl!!!
I have done both, it's really personal preference!
How much do you make a month?
Hey! If you add your books in draft 2 digital... Can you still get KDP select option which has 70% royality?
I believe D2D takes a cut but it’d be close to that
I think your book covers would look good on merch. Try it.
(1) You have to pay for the commercial license rights to do that, just fyi, it’s not something authors can do without permission. (2) I DO have merch with my covers on them lol
@@BethanyAtazadeh I design my own covers, so that puts me in a better position. Thanks for your feed back, Bethany
Omg...I have a corgi too! She is a tri-color. I just published 4 books on Amazon to help women recover from Narcissistic/Emotional Abuse. Now I need to switch my focus from writing to marketing/sales. If you have suggestions I would love to hear them :) Thanks!
Yay for corgis! And I have a whole marketing playlist on my channel if you want suggestions! :)
Do you have a writing course? May i get the link to your course please.
Great video Bethany... love the bloopers :-)
Haha thank you!
I hope you have it set up as a business, that all those payments go to the business. That why you can’t take advantage of business tax rates and all it’s possible deductions.
I do.
Is there a company that will upload to Ingramsparks that I can hire
Awwwww your Corgi! 😊❤
are your book sales and youtube videos under one LLC?
This is helpful!
Thanks Rebecca! :D
I was going to do the publish and thrive course anyway, but I’m going to use your affiliate link so you get a cut :D
Aww yay!! Thank you so much! And I can’t wait to hear what you think of it, I think you’re gonna love it!!
@@BethanyAtazadeh No worries at all! I’m so excited for it :D
Great video, very similar to my streams ☺️
Thank you so much!
"Bloopers FOR DAYS" 🤣 We love it!
Haha!
How do u have time to write with all this other stuff going on?
Because the majority of it is passive income - meaning I don't actively work on it, they make me money in the background while I write.
i think you meant 5th income shrimp swimming in a stream. yeah!
WHat if someone tries to steal my book on KDP?
Good to know
@@BethanyAtazadeh
I would suggest putting an ad placement near the end of your video if you want to increase your revenue.
How did you get a name like Atazadeh? Is your husband Persian?
Ah, I didn't know you didn't like live events :( Well, good on you for stretching out of your comfort zone D:
Thanks!
I heard you couldn’t get affiliate credit for your own books. Is this not true?
I'm not sure honestly... But I don't see why not? It's still a product like everything else?
@@BethanyAtazadeh I know authors do it. But I think there’s something in the fine print about not being allowed too bc it’s like being paid twice for the same product.
It’s generally against the terms of service for the affiliate and the retailer. If you get caught you can get shut down
Thanks for posting this. I learned so much from it, that I would hit the Like button 5 times if it'd let me. :-D Keep up your hard work. Judging by your subscription numbers, many of us appreciate it!
Yay! Thank you so much! ☺️
The title is a little misleading. Several of these income streams are not passive.... still, good content.
How do you make money on RUclips?
Wait, are you in MN too? Lol did not click before
I shall start selling drugs just in case
Making money by talking about making money 😆
