    Any passive income opportunities for writers/readers that I didn't think of? I feel like there's got to be more and would love to hear what you think!

    As always, this was super helpful. I was going to say that sponsorships are another passive income stream but I don't know if that would be considered passive since it's a one-time paycheck usually. Lol. I love when my favorite creators have multiple streams of income. I want artists and authors and creators to be able to make a living off their work if that's the path they choose! I don't understand why that's sometimes seen as a negative thing. I get when it's a scam, yes. But why not just judge it based on a value of the product instead of being like "you should ONLY be doing the artistic thing! Nothing else! You're not a real artist!" Like, no. If you've created a valuable product or you're an affiliate for a company you love, why does that equal scammer?
    Thank you, again, for being so upfront and grounded about the financial side of creative work!

    • @BethanyAtazadeh
      @BethanyAtazadeh  3 года назад +3

      Oh yeah, good point! I wasn't sure how sponsorships worked because I've never done one, but I ended up skipping it more because I was thinking that was more of a youtuber (or maybe social media?) type thing versus a writer-specific thing? Idk though, it could still be awesome, so it's worth mentioning! :D And absolutely agree, thank you so much!

    I love this video! My husband has a passion for podcasting, but me not so much. I tried, but no. I am launching some journals/notebooks/coloring books soon. I have a passion for those, and I’m kind of excited to see how those go as I polish up my next novel 💜 I also have merch and a membership site for moms with chronic illness (rather than just a course). My last stream is affiliate. I’m just getting started. These are all at the beginning stages, so they are snowballing, but I love seeing them start small and grow (just like babies 🤣). (I do RUclips also, but mostly just for fun)

    All of these ideas are fantastic. Definitely gave me some things to think about as far as what I can implement or improve on that I'm not doing already. I only started considering doing audiobooks after I fell in love with them as a listener, about 2 years ago. I have a couple under my belt now and they are a TON of work and time, more than I had anticipated. If you don't enjoy it or aren't going to make money from it, it's hard to justify, but I personally would love to see more of your books in audio if you ever get around to it. 😊

      Yeah. Most of my projects are writing-based, which will definitely have continuing returns once I finish them, as will the video game on my bucket list of projects. I'm actually considering selling asset packs for game devs when it comes to pixel art, since that's a small hobby of mine. It may not be tons of money, but any extra would help with the long-term goal. :)

    Well, your definition of passive income is mine too. Just taking the linguistics, "passive" means that you don't do the stuff, but it is done (lol) for you, so yeah.
    I was quite surprised about the audiobook thing. I never thought about it, honestly, so it is interesting that you talked about your personal experience, but also about how writers could also make money from it in different ways.

I struggle with organizing all the various parts of the writing life - which I believe includes many, if not all, of these kinds of passive income streams. I tutor and teach teens, but I love that, but I also would like my writing and writing life to stand on its own a bit more. So, thank you for the encouragement and all the ideas!

      @@BethanyAtazadeh I found your older video and that was good too. I think maybe I'm not ready to launch yet. I got a great mark on my dissertation recently and my girlfriend encouraged me to start a Patreon - even just friends and family at first, while I'm finishing the novel - she was thinking I could share short pieces of fiction and maybe offer a proofreading service. I felt really enthusiastic about it at first and did some research and planned out my tiers and benefits - deviating from her ideas somewhat! It's weird trying to think up benefits when thinking of my audience because I haven't built one yet so it would just be through my personal network, so I got confused about what makes sense to offer as benefits. I guess my questions would be around whether I should definitely wait until I've built an audience. My gf knows someone who started a Patreon early but they got commissions to do paintings which makes more sense than with writing. I guess I'm just trying to figure out how to bring in an income as a writer before I'm published and without creating too much additional work!

    Loved the ideas, thank you. Do you think creating a YT video that summarizes the book or series might be a good marketing tool? I have been thinking of creating a video with a some artwork related to the story and a summary of the story, maybe some dramatic music too. Do one or two for the book and maybe one or two for short stories of the universe surrounding the story? Do you think those would be good? Or have you tried something like that and found it not really helping? Thank you!

      That sounds like you're talking about a book trailer? Those can be fantastic and a fun way to share with readers, maybe for the cover reveal or release day especially. As a teacher, my time to develop other streams of income is not as great as I would love it to be, yet I also know that I need to begin establishing other income sources - I love teaching but I do not love dealing with the discipline issues. Do you look at reviews or talk to companies directly? What's your best advice on approaching that research? What fo you think is the most important thing to consider in this area?

      Honestly, my number one goal was to connect my store to RUclips, and at the time of setting it up there was only one option that I was aware of. (I think there's at least one other option now, but not sure how many RUclips partners with.) If that wasn't a factor, I might've had a harder time deciding, but that really narrowed down my options to just one. I'd recommend watching other youtube creators who've actually done multiple stores to get a better idea of what's out there! :)

    Save as much of your income from writing and all of these sources into retirement and taxable investment accounts. A pair of total stock market and total bond market index funds or ETFs will be more passive than all of these sources. Don't take my word for it though. Research into these to truly understand the value of these sources for yourselves.

    KDP only really works after you have a following and to get that following means more work than you're ever really going to make from your books. When Amazon promotes every publisher book over self published books you're never getting a good deal. I do cookbooks and even typing in my name as author leaves my books somewhere down the list below who ever has paid Amazon for promotion.

    • @BethanyAtazadeh
      @BethanyAtazadeh  11 месяцев назад

      That's definitely not true. There's also all kinds of other paid advertising like Amazon or Facebook. A following is just organic marketing = one type of marketing you can do.

    So, if you make 70 cent in royalties a sell on an eBook you'd have to sell 71,428.58 books a year to make a 50K year. So yes, backlist backlist backlist - build that backlist!

    Remember, all that matters is how you feel about yourself. And how Keanu Reeves would feel about you if he met you. (Not my joke but I couldn't resist!)
