- In "The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle" Fred and Ginger's new manager, Maggie Sutton, gets them an audition at the prestigious Cafe de Paris and they go from near starvation to stardom.
Their return to America was a big event, and now they are everywhere, introducing new dances, authoring a book on modern dancing, appearing in Broadway plays, opening their own dance school, nightclub and restaurant, and merchandising several product lines. Ginger becomes a fashion icon, from clothing to hairstyles. I am lost as to why the story omits their big broadway play "Watch Your Step" (1914), Irving Berlin's first musical. It was here they refined and popularized the Foxtrot. The Foxtrot scene was cut, and the dance is displayed for just a moment.
Yep, it wasn't long before their name was merchandised! Ginger loved her clothes and Fred loved his shoes! Ha! I love it. The dances are always superb, wether it be ballroom or swing hall material, it fit the bill! One of my favourite parts that show their dancing in the film is on the giant 'United States floor'! The effects and lighting are to be marveled.🙄
What I find funny about the whole thing is Irene and Ginger had the same experiences by the time they made this movie, so they should get along, right? NOT. Ginger's PageBoy haircut (I think that is what you call it) from Vivacious Lady was a trend setter, Ginger was a clothing trend setter (ostrich feather sales BOOMED after Top Hat), and I have an image of Ginger on an advertisement for makeup products, a facial cream I believe. Irene wanted Ginger to dispense with any and all traces of herself, and Ginger refused. If she cut her hair as short as Irene demanded, she would have had a real mess for her next movie, which was a constant. Irene fussed about the shade of a shoe... Ginger was like "it is black and white movie!" But then Ginger had gone into great detail explaining the blue shade of the Ostrich feather dress... ALSO in black and white, LOL. There was not enough room on that movie set for the two of them.
