I watched again the 1939 movie. I remember watching it years ago, such a beautifully made film, wonderful music and dancing. But, oh so sad. They were both very young.
Irene Castle was a fashion icon in the days leading upto and during the first world war. Gloria Swanson in her memoirs said she was sure that the reason she got her first walk-on at Essanay Studios in 1914 (she was then 15) was because of the home made dress she was wearing. "It was an Irene Castle copy".
I loved Irene Castle’s style, and she always posed so beautiful.
Cool history after watching Fred and Gingers portrayal. Thanks for putting it together.
I had never heard of the Castles, this "Step Back in Time" was bittersweet...It made me cry...Thank you, J.White for the research you do to make these videos for your fans...I love them!
I never heard of the Castles but your history is fascinating what a love story even though it had a heart breaking ending; awesome job Judy thank you
Dreary music track for a life full of beautiful music.
I felt it was so sad he died so young.
I heard about them for the first time while reading about F Scott Fitzgerald and Ginevra King's romance. Ginevra mentions Vernon Castle in one of her dreams! haha - in a letter to Scott. And in the footnote of the article it mentions how Vernon and Irene made this "castle walk" dance famous.
A fairly accurate biopic was released in 1939 starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Fred adulated Vernon as a teenaged vaudeville performer and even looked like him.
@Esmee Phillips
I read that she was also unhappy with some of the biopic and how it fictionalized some points on their lives.
@@lisakwaterski6707 She did not care for the Castles' black PA being turned into a white man (Walter Brennan). Nor did she appreciate Ginger being an unbobbed blonde. RKO paid Irene $25,000 as a consultant to soothe her: the equivalent of six months' salary for an A list star.
@@esmeephillips5888 I read bios on the Castles. She was also unhappy about how some of the dances were performed.
@@esmeephillips5888, by the way, the few bios I read were very interesting and revealing, including Irene’s life after Vernon, also that Irene’s personality was more in tune with someone like Katherine Hepburn but she couldn’t dance. And, Irene wasn’t happy about the way some of the dances were performed. I personally think Ginger Rogers did a wonderful job. I guess the studio just wanted to make the dancing a bit more current. RUclips has videos of the Castles famous Maxixe dance, so beautiful.
Small correction: Vernon Castle was an army officer in the Royal Flying Corps. The Royal Air Force was inaugurated two months after his death.
They were far from a perfect couple. He was transferred to Canada first to train both Canadians and Americans where he launched at least one affair with a local woman and planned divorce. In winter the whole training establishment moved to Texas.Training was chaotic. Planes taking off and landing all over the tarmac. Castle crashed his plane to avoid colliding with another.
If only all YT's short biographical and historical narratives were as accurate, as well written and the visuals as well fitted to the text as this. Uploaders- watch and learn.
waw..so sad. :(
Too small
