Something I heard once, and tried to take to heart with my music is, the reason to practice so much is to train your muscles to forget how to fail. Jay's playthrough has that natural, organic, maybe even carefree feel of a drummer so comfortable in the song that failure isn't even an option anymore. In the pocket, in the moment and from the heart as much as from the brain. I love watching this guy play!
Jay is an absolute boss. So many great drummers out there right now. He is in the top tier. Genius.

Back again for another look and listen. By far, my favorite drummer. The work on the toms @05:40 is so tasty against the ambience of the guitars.
You absolutely have to see Jays Meinl video of Sacrifice. One of the most fluid inspiring songs I have ever heard and the sounds of his cymbals are phenomenal!
You really do need to listen to Jay playing "Sacrafice" - it's super tasty.

Check out Jay's Meinl playthrough of "Juno", it's worth it just for "the fill" he throws in towards the end (that isn't in the studio version), you'll know it when you hear/see it!

The kick pattern in that one part is wild
To your point at 18:30, Tesseract has been one of my most listened to bands over the past 8 years, and I'd like to think I can play along to a lot of the rhythms, but with the limb independence, precision, and mind-bendy transitions, I want to burn my sticks too.
I've been subscribed to his catalogue of drum lesson/modules, and with how well he breaks everything down for all levels and how his lessons build on themselves, it's no wonder he's so relaxed and fluid. All about that flow..

Jeez those fills and the way he transitions is so mindblowing. People who say modern music lacks soul really just don't explore enough especially with drummers like Jay around.
The craziest part of the Tesseract is many of their songs start off from programmed drums. Who thinks of rough drafts like this on the pc xdd?

All of their albums so far have been programmed drums on the final release! Jay learns the parts afterwards and puts his own spin on them.
@@mjstories7181 The drums on their first album, "One", and on their newest album, "War of Being", are actually recorded drums played by Jay. The drums on "Altered State", "Polaris" and "Sonder" were programmed by Acle Kahney due to constraints during the recording sessions.
Never forget what the great Neil Peart said: "Other musicians might hear something great that would make them want to give up. For me, it was always, 'Oh, I want to go practise.'"
Hope you can make a short one where you play the majestic groove from around 13:53 minutes. And by tge way yes still waiting for an interview with the mighty drummer and also guitarplayer 66Samus!
After Gavin Harrison, Jay is my favourite drummer when it comes to ghost notes execution.
Ge reminds me a lot of Ray hearn, smooth poly's ghosting across the board and a big ol' smile on his face making it look easy af.

Jay is the Keith Moon of Prog Metal/Djent ;) Hopefully with a longer lifespan! Absolute ledge.
The most expensive part oh my kit are the Meinl Byzance cymbals, but I'm ok with this. They sound spectacular and respond well to various different techniques and approaches from jazzy to stoner doom.
Jay is just so fluid and groovy. Check out any other playthrough because they are all top tier
the way you mic drums and cymbals is entirely different if you don't have to make sonic space for other instruments, or are, featuring drums/cymbals.
The instrumental version of this album is one of my favorites of all time.

3:37, not Jay but I think is about 95% exactly as the record is played. maybe different toms but the accents, snares, crashes are all set in stone. Which cymbal he hits I think is maybe a bit different.
Would be cool to see you cover one of jay's vids where he leaves the click track in the audio.

Everything on all of their studio albums has been programmed drums, and Jay has done an excellent job of translating it to live performances.

Tesseract have a million times more "musicality", and Jay Postones has so much more style than Portnoy ever did. You literally can't get more stiff than Dream Theater.
