( www.alltfl.com/ ) Check out our new spot to find ALL our content, from news to videos and our podcasts! While the new, just-for-America Toyota Land Cruiser is finally going on sale, some versions still pack a fairly high price tag...which was one matter that kept some buyers out of Toyota's iconic off-road SUV. Now, though, it seems like the automaker is listening, and there may be a smaller and more affordable Land Cruiser on the way. Tommy and Nathan go through all the details!

I want an FJ Cruiser.... modern 2ish door and simple. No electronic babysitter, just physical lockers and center diff.
My FJ is 12 years old now. Would love a new version!
An actual off-road 4x4 built off a Rav4 might be cool.
Bring back the 4wd vans to North America!
You’re wrong this time guys. The upcoming “baby” Land Cruiser will most likely not be tiny as the Suzuki Jimny and it will be body-on-frame. The magazine you’re refereeing to explains it right there. This vehicle will most likely be based on the new work truck Toyota is already selling in Thailand and other markets, the Hilux Champ, which is body-on-frame and significantly larger than a Jimny. That truck by the way has two engine options, a 2.4 diesel and the 2.7 gas you are talking about. That same truck should also be the basis for a body-on-frame competitor to the Ford Maverick, perhaps to be named Stout.
Or you can buy a Ford Bronco Sport - if you can find one without the $10K dealer "market" write-up!
I hope that’s true! That means that the US will finally get the Toyota Hilux as the new FJ Land Cruiser!
The old FJ cruiser was based off of the Prado 90 series!
Honestly a Maverick competitor needs to be unibody. You’ll get much better packaging and interior space along with fuel mileage. Toyota has plenty of off road vehicles, they don’t need another one.
That truck starts around 10-13k...saying the SUV will start at 35k like they said is nuts....this will start around 20k-25k in the U.S. my prediction.
So in other words a Suzuki Vitara/Tracker made by Toyota? About time.
I’ve seen something called an Urban Cruiser in the ME and South Africa. Doesn’t look like the Land Cruiser but it has nice styling and could be mistaken for a small off-roader but it’s definitely a unibody
rebadge Toyota, they even asked the jimny but Suzuki politely said no.
The new frame is already developed and being sold in the Hilux Champ (the boxy truck pictured in the article)
Probably be available everywhere but the U.S.
Too gas efficient and cheap don’t ya know worlds gets it but forget America
Don't forget Canada too, we also are forbidden from having small offroad vehicles
Mitsubishi needs the Lancer Evo back, but so far, I’m stoked for what’s coming up. They finally woke up to reality and got working again.
If Mitsubishi would make Pajero and Montero at very affordable pricing... that would be real good for the off road crowd. Let's see if toyota wont bring prices down.
New Mitsubishi ASX in Europe is a rebadged Renault Captur and new Mitsubishi Colt is a rebadged Renault Clio. In a best case scenario they could make Montero as a rebadged Dacia Duster in the States.
I really wish for Mitsubishi to bring back the Montero/Pajero back to America
We want this for Europe! That size vehicle makes a ton of sense here and we crave something cooler than a RAV4. So bring it on Toyota and bring it fast!
I think Toyota would release it in Europe and most other countries except some overseas countries (North America), so Tommy will cry and dream more. 😂
Seriously, there's a possibility of releasing it in Europe as a competitor to the Suzuki Jimny.
Thought this was something new. We got this update a couple of months ago.
Guys, do you see the Hilux Champ (a small truck launched in Thailand) in the picture? I think this one would be based on the same platform
Looks a little like Suzuki Jimny. Not a bad thing.
Cheap would be 15-25k new not 40k. Love the van stuff.
No way this is actually coming to the states
So when is the TFL hyped $20,000 Toyota pickup coming?
I NEED THISSSSS!!!!!! GET IT TOGETHER TOYOTA AND DO NOT GIVE IT CVT! GIVE IT A 6 SPEED!
it's gonna be based on IMV as an alternative to fortuner in development market
it will be based on IMV used in HILUX, Fortuner, Hilux Camp and Innova Crysta not UnI crossover because no one will buy LC without body Frame
No it will be body on frame, not unibody
jimny competitor lets go
Is will be base on Hilux Champ.
I think they’re using 80/90’s rav 4, three door platform. It looks just like that model just with beefy body panels
The way you were describing the smaller Toyota Land Cruiser seemed to almost describe the Pajero Io/TR4.
Mitsubishi used to make some very cool/good vehicles in the 80's and 90's. It would be great if they were back in the game.
i would like a hybrid picup truck version of this. or whatever Hybrid AWD maverick competition from Toyota at a Budget Price! like original MSRP maverick price? maybe? likely more but... way under 30K please.
Manual option please
I believe that BestCar article mentioned the Land Cruiser FJ using the IMV chassis that underpins the Champ, Hilux, and Fortuner. If that’s true, I think it will share the same exact frame as the Fortuner. That gives us coil springs all around with a wheelbase less than two inches longer than a Corolla Cross. If the LC FJ has shorter overhangs, it could potentially be shorter overall than a Corolla Cross despite the slightly longer wheelbase.
Toyota subsidiary Daihatsu used to make the terios full time 4wd with no low gear. The first generation looked quirky but could be driven anywhere. Newer models were based on first generation rav4 and were actually less capable offroad. They also have the toyota rush. So many vehicles it could be based on
Yes you're correct, old gen rush / terios were available with 4WD,
New gen only 2WD
@@drive-channel1834 I owned the first Gen terios and I used to compete with Jeeps on some dune climbs and that was before I learned to deflate the tires
So right now we have a cheaply built “Land Cruiser” that is expensive, but we are going to have a cheaply built one that will be cheap? Excellent!
If they making this, they should make mini gx550 😂
Simply breathtaking design.
So they are saying that there is a cheaper version of over price 4runner, I meant the landcruiser is on the horizon. 🤯
Btw. It looked similar to the first-generation rav4
Saw this a few weeks ago on another car channel. It was uncertain if it will be coming to North America as far as I heard. If it does then might be the replacement of my Mitsubishi Outlander 2016. 40k is a great price here in Canada 🥲
yeah basically a Toyota designed/build Suzuki Jimny alternative with an efficient powertrain would be very attractive
The frame will most likey be based on the Toyota Stout(Mini Hilux
)
Based on the Jimny 4-door?
They’re going to use the “hilux champ” frame because it’s about to be launch the hilux champ 4x4, and the hilux champ engines are : the 2.7 petrol from the 4cyl taco, the 2.4 turbo diesel from the 4x2 hilux and a 2.0 hybrid, would be awesome to have the old and trusty 2.7 petrol with the 4x4 driveline from the past generation Prado (after all a land cruiser name plate can’t be a part time 4wd to have the same engine but with hilux driveline), Just to think about it got me hyped ‼️ as I’ve seen the Baby FJ it’s gonna be the size and proportions of the old 2010 Suzuki Grand Vitara, with the old 2.7 from the old Prado and the latest technology to be a great offroader
I hope they pull it off better than the tacoma with sales down 60% because of being so over priced.
Another Toyota SUV? Ah just what the world needs.
Interested if this comes as a fully-electric off roader, not interested at all if this is a hybrid of gas burner.
How many different SUV in the same market space is Toyota going to have. They have the Land Cruiser at $55,000+ where will the 4Runner be? $45,000+ this new mini Land Cruiser $35,000+.
Mitsubishi should bring the Triton to the United States.
I can’t imagine Toyota denigrating the LC nameplate with a unibody.
RAV4 prime powertrain with more off-roading credibility
Land Cruiser "Sport" ?
😁
Very interesting little Land Cruiser for sure. I could very well be a buyer in a few years if my local Toyota dealer didn't dress their salespeople in plaid pants with white shoes. Toyota, and their dealers in my area have become the sterotypical used car dealer of the past.
Everything about this screams that it’s gana be a south asia/international specific Land Cruiser but i hope it comes to the united states cuz this would be my dream vehicle
If it's not made in Japan, I don't want it
If it's cheap , like 30k , sign me up . 40k you are on drugs to call that cheap for a uni body tiny gas CUV.
Pipe dream. 😂
The affordable $55k landcruiser hybrid are finally here and they are not going for $55k at all😂
All toyota has to do is release the 3rd gen 4runner again. Fix the problems it had and thats all🤷🏽♂️
Im all for a downsized LandCruiser, even if it's close to a Jeep Renegade in size.
Give me a 2 door version and I might bite
vans don't sell like wagons dont sell but they should bring back the urban gorilla
My theory of the cheaper upcoming Land Cruiser is that the frame is likely a unibody like the Bronco Sport, or the partial/hybrid unibody with U ladder frame instead of the square tube ladder, like the Daihatsu Terios (considering Toyota own part of Daihatsu shares).
mini Land Cruiser looks like a plastic toy and the Corolla Cross dimensions are not good - so hopefully you're wrong
PLS TOYOTA BRING IT TO THE US
Size ford bronco sport for mm translate a pulgada
Toyota's going into Suzuki territory since Daihatsu blew up in their faces 🤷♂️
It looks like the Jeep Renegade that never was
looks like an updated Jeep Renegade🤣
I dont dream of landsnoozers
Toyota junk. Not interested
lol 😂 Toyota overpriced new generation 4Runner makes this mini land cruiser look like a bargain…
Toyota has become trash. It’ll be crazy expensive, small, stripped of most features found at such a price point. Reliability will be in question too.
TFL always calls something cheap then you find out it's $40k before dealer mark-ups. 😂😂
I know right. It may be cheap to them since they making RUclips money but us normal regular working guys think its to expensive lol
A new 40K off roader is cheap
@@jmax850 A Jimny is only about $20k-$23k starting in Australia and Europe. When it comes to Off-Roaders, we are being suckered into paying more.
@@AkioWasRightJimny XL starts at $34,990 in Australia. $30,490 for the 2 door. Not as cheap as you are thinking. The fact is, it’s not 2003 anymore. 40k is cheap for a vehicle. It’s just the times we live in.
@@dus10remi $30,490 is in AUD. That converts to $20,221 USD.
So no, it's actually much cheaper than you were thinking.
New and Affordable doesn't exist today.
The 2.7 would be awesome. It’s Toyotas most reliable current engine.
How about just a striped down regular sized Land Cruiser, with a tailgate, no luxury options and the same infotainment system as the 1958 model for $40,000. That’s the car everyone actually wants lol.
I've hoping they would do a "throwback poor man" 80 series with the clamshell tailgate..The new 250 looks like you could modify the tailgate to a clamshell tailgate
They should go full-on retro and put in the V6 the 5th Gen 4Runner and 2022 Tacoma had. Give folks a choice.
40k is pretty steep
I guess it depends on your idea of cheap?
Don’t fool yourself. Toyota and affordable aren’t a thing anymore.
It will never come to North America. Other channels have reported it will be a BOF built in Thailand and will be the cousin of that little $10,000 pick up truck on the same page as you posted. This vehicle will be built with the 2.7 and will never pass the NA crash test standards.
Oh snap! I am more excited about the Delica than the mini Land Cruiser. Even though I am a Toyota fan and I own and wheel an FJ Cruiser. Make Mitsubishi cool again!
So the RAV 4 is getting redone this year, so why not just square it off a little and make that the new vehicle you’re talking about. It would give people something different looking than the CRV and you can just slap the same hybrid and drivetrain options from the Camry and they’d sell like crazy
I can understand the concept of a regular hybrid, but the plug in hybrid seems rather silly and pointless to me. With the regular hybrid at least your not increasing your electric bill/usage in order to save gas or gain extra power.
You save way more gas with a plug in hybrid and plug ins usually give you an electric mode with a okay range
Agreed, there's an article called "Plug-In Hybrids? Just Say Hell No" that gives a good overview. You can make the case that it's the best of both worlds but I think it's worst of both worlds, namely because it means having to get a home charger installed and then plug in every time you park without much benefit except cost savings but the PHEV version costs more so fuel savings cancel out anyway. Realistick also has a video from a few days ago about how the PHEV Prius Prime makes no sense. I think pure ICE or pure electric make the most sense and regular hybrid can work for some people or if it gives better performance, i.e. adds to capabilities instead of just cost savings.
I really hope something like this comes out. All the Trucks in the US have gotten way too big and expensive. I just hope they don't go crazy with the price and also I really hope they don't skimp on the features like they do in the Corolla Cross.
Looks like the size of the 2nd gen Rav4
Like someone else said, it based on the Hilux Champ its the white truck in the lower left of the magazine @:47 it even has the Hilux Champ interior, Toyota should also sell the Hilux Champ in the USA too as there are a lot of people who want the Hilux Champ.
The size of a jeep renegade?
Renegade sized?
So it seems Toyota is looking to name all their 4x4 SUVs "Land Cruiser"?
Ok, I guess.
That leaves the RAV4 and Sequoia out.
But that may be purposeful as they are far more mall-crawlers than offroaders.
@2:15 The profile picture of the Land Cruiser in yellow surprisingly looks like the Jeep Renegade, let me know if you agree.
40k isn't cheap
Bring back the 4wd vans to North America!
I want nothing to do with a full electric or hybrid.
Hope they come with straight axles
I bet they will offer a small stellantis/toyota diesel engine for Europe.
I know Toyota ruined the Supra name by putting it on a BMW… but I seriously doubt they’d stoop as low as badging a unibody vehicle as a land cruiser of some sort.
Likely won't be unibody, they missed a lot of obvious info here. The screenshot they used shows the non-unibody truck that it will be based on.
Will this compete with the Honda Passport/Subaru Forester?
hopefully the Mitsubishi Delica would be exactly like the D:X Concept and not narrow and extremely unstable like the old models - also it's great that Mitsubishi have a former Dakar rally raid champion with multiple championship wins helping guide their future for off road performance
They already have the frame to make it body on frame. Just check out the new Hilux Champ being sold in Asia right now.
It sounds like they intend to compete with the Bronco Sport and the Forester. Its not a bad idea, I see plenty around so I'm sure the segment is doing well. But can we please stop referring to $35k + vehicles as cheap? If its not sub $30k, it doesn't even begin to deserve the title, and the last thing we should be doing is suggesting these insane new car prices are affordable.
I would be interested in this
Return of Off-roadie xB 🤣💪👍
Toyota fans getting excited for this is like Jeep fans getting excited for the renegade.
Lol nailed it!
I agree with Tommy on the FJ's size. It has to be like a Rav4-size-4x4-capable similar to that of the Land Cruiser 250 but with a smaller wheelbase. In some other countries the 250 is still too big for some.
The thing with Toyota is the lower priced cars are never in stock at least in the area I live in…can’t find a Prius can’t find a Corolla Cross , Camry LE then you jump to the 40g range way out of my league.
