This is something that kinda bother me in the late game of a lot of FE titles. Despite your army approaching level 20 promoted they still insist on throwing at you weak unpromoted enemies that barely deal damage and die easily.
It's an unfortunate safety measure in case a 5 year old is playing and there army consists of mid to late game unpromoted units because all of their early game units died and there's no way to win otherwise. The old FE games we're handheld games meant to be played by kids and pre teens and as such were made to be as easy as possible.

The Japanese version of FE 7 is much more difficult than the American one, and it happens with other versions too, which later started to add modes like maniac to compensate for the needs of more hardcore players.

Most of the enemies actually pose a threat as so many of em are promoted valkyries with like insane amounts of speed and magic all while having to deal with like siege tomes and status staves like berserk, silence, and sleep. Fun times I tell ya
players being able to sense a genuine improvement and rise of the army's combat proficiency as opposed to enemy vs army dynamic always staying the same... le bad?
And meanwhile in Mystery of the Emblem you fight promoted Dracoknights as early as Chapter 2. Thanks, Fire Emblem.
Promoted dracoknights with fucking 10 movement in a map full of forests preventing your escape, FE3 was ruthless sometimes
