    Great video. I love the fact that you keep it real and show realistic steps on a lawn that's been decimated by the weather. You actually inspired me to renovate my lawn towards the end of last year, and fortunately, the weather hasn't ruined my lawn much. It's a nice dark green, quite long, but the weather has been wet. Every time I go to mow, it rains 😂 sods law mate, honestly!

      That's sound! I wish my lawn had faired as well as that!
      The weather is a nightmare. Hard to catch a good couple of days at the moment 😅

    loving the content, back in last year i decided to reovate my lawn too but I made a mistake by putting the soil down and then the grass seed after that and leaving it and then we got a load of rain like way to much and alot of birds were picking away at the seeds so my thinking for this year is to just mow the lawn at the lowest setting and then scarify the lawn and then mow over it again and then with the soil patches left from last year im just going to go over it again with some soil and grass seed, would you have any advice if im doing it right or wrong? thanks.

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  3 месяца назад

      That's definitely what you should do. As the existing grass starts to grow back, it will give the new seedlings some good shade whilst they germinate and start growing so hopefully that will deter any birds!
      I'm going to try and time my renovation this year with the weather (but I'm not holding my breath that I'll time it right! 😅)

    Thanks for the content! subscribing with interest 👍🏻 I had a brand new lawn layed over topsoil and sand mix due to the clay underneath in Sept it looked great originally but it has gone really thin now and probably due for a cut! any tips on thickening up the lawn ?

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  3 месяца назад +1

      Fertiliser for now and then once we get into April, you can look to over seed and then it will start to really thicken up.

    When you said you cut on your 3rd highest setting what mm would you say that is? I commented last week about doing my first cut last week at 60mm. Going to mow again on Monday (weather dependant) was debating going 40mm but I'm conscious of getting giddy and taking too much off??
    Really like your videos I'm over in Manchester so your videos are very relatable with given the weather etc!!

      Hi just follow the one third rule, ie never cut more than one third off it at a time so measure the height of your grass if it's 60mm then one third is 20mm so cut it at 40mm and you'll be fine👍

    • @NoviceGardener

      Nice one 👍🏻
      To be honest, getting on at 40mm would be ok now, I’m cutting just below that at the moment. It might look rough for a week, but it will bounce back, especially if you get on with a fertiliser. Don’t go lower than about 40 for now though if it’s that long at the moment. With the warmer weather coming, it will be good to get it trained at a good height before bringing it down later on in April and May. Hope that helps 👍🏻

    You still need a week of sun on that back lawn before it starts kicking up. It's not rained for 5 days here in London but the lawn is still too soggy to work on properly.
    Take care!

    When do you recormenf I scarify my lawn? And which lawn seed would you recommend for overseeing.
    Also shall I fertilise my lawn around now like yourself before scarifying/overseeding.

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  3 месяца назад +1

      I’d hang on until April before doing any over seeding. Depending on temps, it could be a while before it germinates

      I use a Hayter which gives a good stripe - it’s quite heavy which helps to stripe the grass nicely. But pricey though. I also use a Bosch. They’re just over half the price of a Hayter, but cannot fault them!
