- In today's video, I share what can go wrong if you do the wrong thing at the wrong time.
Sometimes you need to start from scratch, and that's exactly what we're doing here.

Dont need to use chemicals to kill the grass. All u need is a tiller, till the old grass and soil then u MUST sive the soil getting rid of the weeds, and stones. Once that is done add compost with sharp sand and till that. Sharp sand is good for drainage. Then level with lute or rake then add your lawn dressing ontop that and seeds. Last bit, use large roller to compact the seeds into the soil or use your feet and then water unitil germination depending on weather. All the best.
Who else thought they were going crazy 😂 I came to the conclusion it must be the garden from a different angle 🤣🤣
Brilliant a new project. I kinda thought it was somewhere around you with the high walls ! I am sure you will do a great job and your neighbours will be pleased.
Cheers 👍🏻
I’m an absolute novice but even I knew to wait until it got warmer before chucking seed down, good of you to help neighbours sort it out 👍🏿
That pigeon was listening in until u gave him the information he needed which was you going to seed late may then he was off to find another human about to re-seed 🐦 😅
Best comment I've read in a while! 🤣
They're all handing around in the trees on the far side biding their time!
The ground has been a bit cold of late for effective germination, but you cannot predict the weather that far ahead. Mine has been similarly patching but I won't panic by applying glyphosate. Soil temperature due to rise this week.
The main reason is because I'll be getting on this space with bent/fescue turf soon. Need a blank canvas to work with 👍🏻
Temps are looking good this week like you said - roll on the lawn care season!
Until you said it was neighbours I was thinking how many lawns has this guy got
🤣
It’s like I’m inheriting more lawns as the weeks go on!
I’d be more inclined to get a mini digger in or dig by hand. Get a skip and remove the top 6 inches of that soil. Then drainage? Then 70/30 new soil/sand mix in to create a brand new 6-8” seed bed and give you the best chance of creating a new lawn that will take and be successful. A lot of expense and time/effort but the neighbour will thank you in 12-18 months time. Good luck 🤞
It would be best, but going to try and make the most of the soil they have. The right plant should in time improve the soil.
Is this Roundup still with glyphosate? Over here we only got nonanoic acid.
Yep, still glyphosate 👍🏻
What’s with the brick work on your estate have you spoke to the builder
It’s just with the elevation as the estate goes up. It’s quite steep towards the back of the estate.
I’m surprised you have put weedkiller on the lawn, usually only do that with old lawns that are full of weeds and moss. You are going to waste 2 or 3 weeks.
I would have cut it really close then scarified and levelled it over with top soil. Re-seed all the lawn and cover with 50/50 mix of compost and good quality topsoil. Getting warmer now so hopefully germinate ok.
The Roundup will degrade usually within 7 days. Even if the gras is still quite green, it will have done the damage so getting on sooner is always an option. But I’m not seeding anymore… the plan has changed slightly since filming this
@@NoviceGardenergona lay down lawn turf?
Got some decent stuff coming next week 👍🏻
Nice interesting project to follow. Have you agreed a budget with your neighbour?
No charge for them. The landscaper they had left this space in a mess and plus, they're sound neighbours (and they're also cool with me filming in their garden which is a bonus).
And... the plan isn't to seed anymore. I've managed to sort something else which should hopefully be much, much better!
That’s really kind of you. Intrigued to know the ‘something else’. Mysterious 🤣
The neighbours must trust you, thats not an easy job, levelling, reseeding, topsoil, fertilizer etc.
I hope they are paying you well.😃
To be honest, I think it’s going to easier than I originally thought. Scarified and raked today (the footage in this video is a week old). It’s actually quite smooth now thank god!
Roll on end of May
what about just scalp whats there, level and overseed. If levelling buries what's there so be it.
It's always an option, but you'll more than likely get lots of the old stuff coming through inevitably. You can see it with this lawn now. Some of the old fescue has fought on. But in fairness, the new seedlings wouldn't stand a chance!
@@NoviceGardener fair enough and with the weeds there aswell, and I guess you want to get ride of the stones and debris on the soil there now anyway
Absolutely. Scarified today. The amount of stones was ridiculous! 😅
@@NoviceGardener what width are the blades on your sacrifier mate?
I’m not 100% sure, only a few cm apart. Quite thick too so they do a fair bit of damage.
Ok interesting, removed all the old lawn and then re seeded too early and this is the result. I'm planning on hiring a turf cutter, major reno, but least now temps are warmer so hopefully I don't have this problem.
You definitely won’t at this time of year now, temps are brilliant for seed. You’ll have germination in less than a week. The landscaper here was mad to put it down so early!
@@NoviceGardener anyone would think he was a novice gardener. 🤣😅
Instinctively it just doesn’t seem right to be spraying weed killer around… aren’t you essentially poisoning the soil?
Even if you want rid of that fescue, can’t you turn over the sod, level the top as desired and re-seed? That will keep useful organic matter within the soil, no?
It does kill the plant, but glyphosate degrades into the soil in around 7 days (just says 2 to 3 weeks usually, but that's just until it completely discolours - the grass is long gone by then).
Are you don't have leatherjackets
Nope, the lawn was actually decent before the landscaper took it off. It would have been perfect if he’d have left it as is. Poor judgement on their part
Small word of caution but I would definitely wear a mask and gloves when applying Roundup. That stuff is pretty nasty.
I know it’s not a great look however.
You’re right to be honest. It’s an unnecessary risk going without.
