    I bought the same landscaping rake and lawn lute after watching your channel. Absolute game changers when renovating my front lawn last month! Alongside the tools you’ve listed, the things I swear by for renovating new build lawns are the swardman aerator, gypsum, tall fescue grass seed (great for clay lawns) and landscaping fabric to cover the seed - bloody birds are a nightmare otherwise! Like you, lawn care if my new hobby and I love it! Cutting the grass every 2nd day is actually really enjoyable! Thank you for all your lawn care tips. Please keep them coming!

      Nice one! 😁
      I've had my eye on the swardman aerator for a while - the one thing putting me off is the price. But I guess it would just be a 'bite the bullet' purchase as I know it will be worth the money in the long term. How is it with getting though clay soils? I'm hoping to improve the soil on my top lawn with an aerator sometime soon.
      You're right about cutting often too. It's not a big job either when you keep on top of it!

      @@NoviceGardener can’t recommend the aerator enough. Bought a cheap one from b&q for £20 a couple of months ago & it clogged up after the 3rd time I pushed it into the ground! The swardman aerator is fantastic. Couple of spots in the garden were tough to get through but it did it and didn’t clog up! 🥳 both my front and back lawns are similar sizes to yours. Took a couple of hours to do the back lawns by hand but well worth it. If you do get one, please film it as would love to see how you get on using it!

    Great content as always. I think a good video idea would be something like "year round lawn care" where you talk through the different methods and approaches you take in different seasons to maintain your lawn. Covering things like the difference products you use on the grass, the frequency of application and when best during the year to use them

    I recently extended my first garden and improved the clay soil a bit before adding a new lawn. I did a rubbish job levelling it as it turns out but overall it's not bad. We're entering the hot period and so its a new lawn with roots that arent established fully yet, but there are patches of grass that are lush and green and full and the rest is... Okay. Lots of straw coming through under the initial layer of green.
    I'm still getting my head around when to aerate, when to scarify, whether or not we should fertilise etc.
    It would be great if you have some monthly/annual activities that keep it healthy.

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  Год назад

      It's a really tough time of year, particularly with the heatwave we've just had. It shouldn't be as bad thankfully over the next week or so. If I was you, I'd get fertiliser on it soon and keep it well watererd.
      Aerating isn't a bad shout at this time either as it will help some of the water get deeper into the soil without evaporating, but it may leave your lawn a tad unsightly for a week or so.
      I'll put a video together over the next few weeks showing what my usual plan is.

  • @David-wh7rm

    I'd say very similar to you but just different options. I chose...
    - Mac Allister corded mower (gifted to me)
    - Bosch corded strimmer
    - Long broom for sweeping up grass from paths
    - Dust pan and brush for cleaning equipment and tidying up smaller spaces
    - Fork, trowel and secateur (inherited from grandparents)
    - Patio weeder (right angled end) to get weeds and grass out from in between patio slabs
    - Dandelion weeder to spear into the lawn a few times around a weed levering it up as you go
    - Walensee coring aerator
    - Half moon edging tool for borders
    - Hozelock rectangular sprinkler
    - Hozelock reel hose
    - Gardena hand spreader
    - Birchmeier Aquamix hose end sprayer
    I've since bought the Wolf Garten Multi-Change Telescopic Handle and I can now donate some of my old tools as I can use the same handle for multiple tools:
    - Wolf Garten garden broom
    - Wolf Garten decking brush
    - Wolf Garten half moon
    - Wolf Garten roller scarifier
    - Wolf Garten leaf rake
    A lot of my choices are for space savings reasons as I don't have a big shed or garage so I don't have room for an electric scarifier, or a napsack sprayer you carry on your back but mine still get the job done.

      You've got a cracking set of kit! I've been after picking up some of the Wolf Garden tools. Do you rate them? They look great from what I've seen online.
      Also, the Walensee coring aerator. What do you think of this? I've been looking at getting an aerator for a while, but it only ever seems that the proper expensive ones get good reviews. Does it do a decent job?

      @@NoviceGardener appreciated 👍. For what it's worth I've watched through all your videos over the past few months, and I didn't realise you'd done a whole renovation and thought originally you were a garden RUclipsr then I watched back over the complete channel and you earned my respect very early on, fair play to you, honestly I never would have attempted what you did.
      The Wolf Garten kit was highly rated by Shaun on another channel on here so I bought them and honestly I've been so impressed, they're really good quality and the changeable handle means you're not spending money time and time again for the handle, you're only paying for the end bit that you're interested in.
      I've found the Walensee coring aerator to be great too, and there's a plant pot hack which you can do to catch the spent soil cores and save picking them up off the lawn, I can't post a link but you could Google "F1Fcy7AeXeL.mp4" (you'll get the full link in the pdf)
      Again this is from Shaun and his shopping list which I found incredibly useful, your RUclips video though is useful too though 🙏 I can't post a link but you could Google "Lawnright shoppinglist.pdf"
      The only thing I've found with the Walensee is if the soil is too damp then it won't eject cores it just pushes the soil downwards into the lawn which I don't think is the fault of the aerator, it's just the soil conditions. I've found if the soil is dry enough then it does exactly what you'd hope for. The only word of caution is if the soil is left to harden in the tines then it becomes next to impossible to get out. Without fail you need to run water through the tines and push soil out with a long Allen key or screw driver, do not let it harden overnight. Apart from that it's a great tool. Also lubricate it, for any garden tool I really like Niwaki camellia oil. The only thing with the more expensive units is that they have replaceable tines but you could buy this unit a number of times over with the cost of those more expensive units.
      Really enjoy your channel, you're definitely one of the UK gardener channels for lawns now, especially because you seem to not be a professional or that it's your full time job, and you come across as a normal person like the rest of us, especially as I've got a new build too.

    one of the best channels I've subscribed to. Top shelf. Even inspired me to do my garden from scratch. any advice on the top soil? I've had to dig out about 5cm of my old clay soil and picked up a lot of stones and bricks.

      @NoviceGardener  Год назад +1

      Nice one! 😁👍🏻
      If you're replacing clay with top soil, don't go for a 70 sand/30 soil mix. Go with either a 50/50 or a 70 soil/ 30 sand. It's back breaking digging out the clay, especially at this time of year. But it will be worth it!

    Recently bought a new build with a large garden and have found your videos very useful! I’ve bought a Bosch strimmer but regrettably bought the corded one. I’ve tried watching different videos on how to use correctly but I’m sure I’m still doing something wrong, getting up to the edge of the fence still isn’t getting the weeds down and I’m still left with a thing long bit around the edge which is so frustrating and the closer I get the line on the strimmer breaks! I’m sure it’s just that I’m doing something wrong but if you or anyone has any tips that would be great, or a bit of a tutorial on using them properly for someone completely new to all of this would be hugely appreciated. Keep up the content!

      I'll try and get a video together in the next few weeks!
      I had the same issues with a cheaper strimmer that I picked up a few years back (you're talking a £20 strimmer). It was the line that was proper naff. If you pick up a more robust line, you'll notice a massive difference. Just make sure it's the same diameter as the one you have.

    I tend to start my lawn renovation from April onwards, then I scarify it using an Aldi Ferrex corded Scarifier, I then brush in Jack’s Magic Compost or Supa Grow, reseed, (still experimenting with various seed) then level out with Supa Grow Top Soil, then mow, (hopefully) at least twice a week with a recently acquired used Hayter Hawk off of eBay ensuring the blade is constantly sharp

    Great advice. Re the scarifier, how good are they in pulling out weed grasses so you an overseed. Or do you still need to dig out stuff like pop annua manually. Will probably be doing th first mega lawn renovation in September and you channel has been a good reference. But weed grasses are my main challenge.

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  Год назад +1

      It’s not bad with weed grasses. I’m doing this today to my back lawn and quite a bit of weed grass has come through, it’s driving me mad! But it does a decent job at getting rid of the seed heads. Not as good as a verticutter, but it’s the next best thing 👍🏻

    Hi. I enjoy watching your videos. I am starting on my lawn restorations and currently us a corded Bosch. I have been intending upgrading to a battery mower and am impressed with the results you are getting with the Hayter. My lawn is a bit bumpy and uneven so how would the Hayter with a rear roller handle that compared to say a Bosch battery that has 4 wheels?

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  Год назад

      Nice one!
      It entirely depends on how bumpy your lawn is. And it also depends how high you're cutting too. The Hayter should be fine if there are only a few bumps across the lawn - and if you keep it a tad longer too, you won't notice the bumps.
