This chain of replies is weird, it’s all one person commenting on themselves from different accounts to self promo their music(check their comment history if on mobile - click the name/icon - they all reply to the same thing and talk about the same thing). You aren’t sneaky.
SAME! * looks over at the Binge book on my shelf and reminisces over the Bethany Mota target collection * did we all get that feeling after seeing a joey graceffa video recommended the other day?😳
@@jolenehoneycutt2973 No. Just that the people we loved growing up became irrelevant to us once we hit adolescence. Or, at least for me, once I hit high school. So, they no longer encompass our minds and we eventually almost forget they even existed. Hence, losing relevance.
I always think marzia is such a key case to look at. She never wanted a channel or dreamed of a RUclips career instead it was expected due to being the girlfriend of pewdipie, even having her channel named marziapie originally. She eventually left RUclips all together, not due to a lack of success but because she understood it was never her dream and wanted to pursue other things. I think it was incredibly brave and a great example of someone leaving despite still having massive success, good income and a lack of drama.
Little thing (cause I'm annoying): Her original channel name was Cutiepie, which was a nickname that Pewdiepie subscribers had for her before knowing her name. Then it Became Cutiepie Marzia
It's still kinda sad that she just deleted everything. I started watching pewdiepie just a couple years ago and wanted to see what Marzia has been doing and got nothing :(
Marzia and PewDiePie are so interesting youtube wise- Marzia feeling like she HAD to start a RUclips channel just because she was the girlfriend of PewDiePie and the man himself, PewDiePie who is what you would call a youtube OG, and one of those few rare cases of an OG youtuber surviving and bringing in more success over the years instead like most, going on a slow downward spiral into what we would call irrelevancy. And the way he was able to adapt his content towards his audience + the diversity in age in his audience which I find really interesting since most people have a target audience with age.
@@am-zj4mq I find pewdiepie a super interesting case too. Always find it so weird that he isn't mentioned in videos like this when he very much changes his content every few months. Definitely feel people avoid talking about him and his success at staying relevant and diversifying his content and thats a real shame. Would love an Internet analysis on his content
One thing I've learned about myself working in a 9 - 5 is that I thrive in stability and enjoy a traditional office setting. I see so much "boss babe" and hustle culture rhetoric that makes working a 9 -5 seem like a bad thing when it doesn't have to be. Some people want to be entrepreneurs and be their own boss, others want an office job that gives a predictable workload and hours. Neither is bad, but right now people are really shitting on people who are working a 9 -5 and don't have a side hustle they're trying to make their primary source of income
I completely agree. So many people will bash you and call you a sheep, but maybe some people really want to work in, and are passionate about, careers like finance, accounting, pharmacy etc where you likely have to work a 9-5 since that’s where the jobs are. Not everyone needs to be an “entrepreneur”, and most entrepreneurs aren’t contributing anything that significant or groundbreaking anyway.
Same! I need structure and not all corporate jobs are life-sucking. I work in government, so I’m actually helping the public with what I do. But even outside of government, there are plenty of cubicle warriors who do great things.
I’ve noticed this thing with singers and actors too. They’ll hit a peak and then due to just the passing of time or other factors they’ll kinda loose relevancey then they go on to either still keep putting out music or show up on tv and people are like “why are they still trying to be relevant they need to go” like??? Just because a person isn’t as relevant as they used to be dosnt mean they should give up something they truely love doing and as long as their still able to support themselves then simply quitting their job because there not as popular is just stupid to me
Ikr!!! People are so quick to call them “flops” and throw that word around like it’s nothing. Just because they’re not in their peak anymore doesn’t mean they should give up.😭😂
Exactly! When I see "has-beens," I get so excited; I’m like yes, get to bag! Calling those individuals flops and expecting that they just disappear is akin to being happy that a "regular" person lost their job and is struggling to find another job to support themselves and their family
Crazy how Jenna Marbles was still so loved and relevant after all her years on RUclips. She was an OG! She totally restyled her content and still did pretty well, millions of views per video. You don’t see that often. What a legend. I miss her 😭
Shane Dawson was also very good at staying relevant and going through different phases of content, before his latest big drama. Pewdipie while no longer on top, has also remained relevant on utube. It is funny how we have reached the point of RUclips history where some channels with 1 million+ subscribers struggle to even get 50k views on a video.
I think simplynaillogical is the best example of a big youtuber that is making videos that are fun for her on youtube, having a lucrative business (halo taco) and have a full time job to bring balance all together
@@sin3358 I think she's fun and relatable because she's not an influencer - she's a regular lady who likes making videos! sure, she's had buisness collabs and now sells her nailpolish but she's stayed relatable and down to earth. she and ben talk about how normal day jobs and education and such are so important while other people are like ' drop out of highschool to be an influencer who flexes '
Absolutely adore and love simply, I’ve always really resonated and been compared to her in humour and energy, she’s so natural and enigmatic in her own way and stills works / has a business and is interactive, kind and authentic
@@xx-yd5mmYeah like if I remember correctly she’s like a lab tech or something and watching her doing adult thinking with Safiyah and Tyler as well just makes her feel so warm and like a fun auntie! Rather than an unreachable influencer
the creator studio is so helpful when youre just starting out as a youtuber but once you hit your "blow up" it just serves as a reminder that you need to be constantly "bettering' your content and constantly growing which is AWFUL for mental health and honestly? i dont even check it anymore because i cant deal
I agree honestly I feel like everyone has been calling his channel dead for awhile now, he’s never really talked about it but I can imagine that change is pretty hard to go through. Either way glad he’s doing what he wants to do
I love it when my old faves settle into their core audience and the hate calms down or pretty much disappears from their comment sections and they just find their happy place away from the popularity contest of social media. I feel that way about Grace Helbig. She doesn't get nearly the same amount of views that she did years ago, but her community feels so much more welcoming and comfortable now.
I've always suspected that Jenna Marble's departure from youtube was partially due to her feeling done with the platform or bored with her content. This way, her exit was more "graceful" than if she had fought through the controversy only to leave 6 months later anyways. She found herself at a natural stopping point and, though ending on a low note, took advantage of it.
Yes, absolutely! Anytime I see people saying they wish she’d come back (which is often), I fight the urge to tell them that Jenna probably doesn’t even WANT to come back. She was ashamed of her past mistakes, yes, but she had also outgrown the platform and wanted her privacy back. And she was smart enough to see her controversies as an opportunity to reset.
Also unlike many new/younger RUclipsrs Jenna has a graduate degree in a non-media related field she could just get a normal regular job, SimplyNailogical style and probably be pretty happy.
I'm glad at least some people have sense when it comes to this. I always have to fight the urge to say the same thing too. She saw a chance to dip on her own terms and took it.
this may be an unpopular opinion, but i think it's a little self absorbed to demand someone else change because your interests have changed. and that goes beyond RUclips, that's just life.
It feels like a lot of us have the same worries/concerns - is there already a group chat/discord somewhere for us to join and chat/share/ask questions etc? 👀
@@HeyRowanEllis reddit has a great chat about this without naming the chanels, the intrested trend I am seeing is more disability content and parodies in in the algorithm some take it more gracefully than others.
i feel like there's also a LOT of creators that started as a "i'm just like you" type of personality, and as they blew up, they tried to "maintain" this relatability. and obviously, it's quite hard to relate to someone who now lives in a mansion and orders take out 3x per day when you're living in a one bedroom apartment, struggling to make ends meet. I think that's probably the one type of video that a creator cannot get away with maintaining forever...
Thank you so much for the love Tiffany!! It's so great to know that my experience and perspective was able to provide context and space to feel understood :)
creator studio has become such a negative place for creators, i find myself scared to open it and see my “evaluation” now 😩 i’m glad i’m not the only one who feels like this! also definitely needed to hear what you said about choosing your metrics of value at the end! another great video!
I would think a beautiful thing about being an independent creator is not being subjected to degrading performance evaluations. Don’t subject yourself to it if it leaves you more discouraged than inspired!
IT’S A TRAP no but really, you said it perfectly, you feel the best when you’re growing and it’s 100% unattainable to continue to do better than your most recent upload. yay for setting impossible standards!
Loved this, as usual! Christine and Ben from SimplyNailogical have spoken on their podcast a few times about why they still have full time jobs despite being really successful on RUclips. They also speak about how important study/university can be. I think having something like work or study outside of RUclips keeps your mind from being absorbed by the metrics
Yes yes a million times yes! Another youtuber named Penny Tovar made a vid on going to school a while ago. Back up plans aren't just smart; they're a necessity.
theyre a lovely example of people who despite being past their peak of almost 30 million views some years ago, do their best and give their best content to their audience (especially as their audience gets older) ... theyre also expanding their content across so many different genres and its incredible kfnfkdjd
Omg the creator studio dashboard is the soul sucking bane of my life 😅 it’s so frustrating when a lot of the differences between videos are how much RUclips has promoted the video which we… do not have control over?
I think it's so weird that people actually want to be famous. I want my artwork to be famous but not me. That's way too much pressure and people looking at me.
Yeah, like I kind of like the idea of having a small RUclips channel that brings in a just a little bit of extra spending money. But I think I would HATE having a very "successful" RUclips channel. I do not want strangers to be discussing me or recognizing me or whatever. It's too much.
@@thatjillgirl I share similar sentiments! I don't shun success, but privacy is very much a gift. That's why, if I were to pursue YT, ideally I would want to be one of those channels that create video essays or in a similar format. For example, the channel 'Oversimplified.' Great videos, amazing number of views per video, but they never have to show their face. It's brilliant!
Whenever I have a "low performing" video I have to remind myself that RUclips is not like other social media platforms. With Instagram or Twitter your post will get most of it's engagement in the first few days then it will be lost in void. With RUclips a video that was posted 4 months ago or even 4 years ago is easily found through a simple search. So even if a video gets low views in the first week it may still end up being my best video in a couple months. As a small creator I'm not making videos for my job so that stress isn't on my shoulders so I can distance myself from the views easier than a full-time RUclipsr
Absolutely agree! The fact that my older videos can be found by people when they need them, even if it's years after they were initially created, is what I consider the beauty of RUclips! But I also agree that it's easier not to stress about analytics so much when RUclips isn't your main (or only) source of income 😊
I grew my channel doing reaction videos, when I made original content I didn’t get even close to as many views as I would doing a reaction video. I felt like I grew an audience that didn’t really like me, for me and it was hard to process. I still get comments about having a dying/irrelevant channel and it used to bother me but not many people actually put themselves out there to fail. I just try to ride the waves now, and enjoy it while it’s happening.
Idk if this will make you feel better as I dont watch ur vids but a pov from a consumer of a lot of reactionary content. It's not the original content I find funny. I watch reactions as I want to see the creator react to some balls to the walls content. To me, reactionary content makes a boring tv show funny, I'm there for the reactions and the person, not just for the original content. So they dont dislike you, it's likely that they just prefer the way you bounce off something that's already there. To me those kind of videos are just more charismatic than someone just alone in their bedroom. I would almost describe the OC as a comedic lubricant, to help bring out the funniest version of you
I don't know how long ago you started doing more original content, but it could just be that the viewers who enjoy that stuff haven't found you yet, and all your current subscribers are the ones who love reaction videos. Like maybe it will just take time for the right viewers to find you, because in a way, you're almost starting from the beginning again. So in that sense, it wouldn't make sense to compare your channel now with how it was before, you should think of your channel as if it were a completely new channel.
Just know that your videos are so great that I’m always gonna enjoy them no matter how many views or likes they get, please remember that if the creator studio ever lets you down ♥️
I’m glad you mentioned the lack financial literacy that many creators have, especially when you began making an incredibly high income within weeks, months, or even days. It can be incredibly jarring and I wish RUclips offered more support for lower-income/younger creators on budgeting + financial longevity. Also unfortunate that Glozelle is the only creator to speak on a reality I’m SURE many creators have and do go through. Anyways, great video as always! 🥰
siply nailogical is always an interesting example of a youtuber in my opinion, how she still has a very normal everyday job and still has youtube as a hobby. when i first watched her talk about that it honestly changed my persepctive of what a youtuber is
This reminds me of glitterforever17. she went from making videos for teen girls like DIYs and funny videos about school, to making weird videos about period life hacks, to faking a mental illness, to finally admiting that she was broke and had no money left. She explained that when the views started going down she made those weird life hacks videos and then started faking emotional breakdown on live (she made 10k$ with this lives) to finally having to admit she was broke and had been doing what she did for atention. She was then evicted from her house. I feel bad for her but it's also an interesting way to see how losing your fame may affect you.
“We shouldn’t expect our work alone to fulfill us” YEEEES 👏👏 if I could share my perspective on this: I’m a new grad nurse who gets to help people as a JOB. But there will be bad days, like days I feel unworthy of being a nurse cause there are ppl who are smarter, more compassionate, etc. Then I changed my perspective and realized that a nurse is not all that I am. I’m good at being a nurse but I’m also a good artist, a good daughter, and a good friend. It made me feel better about myself knowing that I was affecting other people’s lives in a positive way that wasn’t just linked to my current occupation as a nurse.
I literally cheered when you brought up Charlie McDonnell. He was the entire reason I got into watching youtubers, and I feel like no one remembers him which makes me feel ancient. But he’s such a great example of a creator who was open about their mental health and leaving the platform before it was a common thing to talk about. And I always admired the way he handled the Alex Day situation.
The creator studio should remind us that RUclipsrs are not self-employed, but actually work for RUclips. RUclips profits off of you and makes the rules.
I’m so happy there are captions already! I have auditory processing disorder and it’s hard for my brain to process what I hear without captions, and most videos don’t have captions for hours or days, if ever. I greatly appreciate the thought you put into the video’s accessibility!
I feel like commentary channels or channels that talk about social issues have a big advantage because there is always SOMETHING to talk about. Anything from celebrity drama to global warming and activism.
Interesting comparison while watching: Burlesque dancers of the 40s and 50s actually ended up in the similar financial situation (around 12:44). They spent the money they had to display the veneer of the lifestyle (furs, gowns, jewelry, shoes, cars they didn't know how to drive) and many of them are destitute now. Burlesque as a desired performance medium was edged out by go-go dancers and later strip clubs and the performers didn't plan for the future.
I also immediately thought of stripping. When I interviewed at a place to dance once they had an in house financial advisor to help all the girls manage the huge amounts they could potentially earn which I thought was really cool
Similar issues with pelota/jai alai in places like Miami. The sport still has massive popularity in Basque Country but the issue is in the US it was pretty much only big with Cubans of Basque ancestry and Mafiosi. The kids of the defectors Americanized and didn't give much care for pelota, but the issue was the Mafiosi flooded the sport with money to be laundered and because the mobsters loved to party down in Miami, everyone wanted to be around them so you'd have halls of ten thousand fans watching and gambling. Now the halls are empty even before Covid with maybe a hundred gamblers in there as the mobsters were arrested.
I think it’s just anyone suddenly making more money than they know what to do with. They’re always another set of Joneses to keep up with. Every bankrupt millionaire went out buying bigger chandeliers, more cars and new islands.
Yeah I definitely needed this one today! I barely have my feet in the door of the "content creating as a job" realm but every video that underperforms has me convinced that I've lost my relevance and my channel is dead. Watching this helped ease those fears and now I feel more prepared (or at the very least, more educated)!
In terms of graveyardgirl I think her staying true to who she is and what she enjoys is completely fine. For me I use to watch her videos but then just entered a new phase in life. I think we all go through that and our interests change. She will always get a new audience as other people go through change and stumble upon her channel.
Tho her videos aren't getting as much views, The rise of shorts really helped her get back again. I respect her for staying true to her brand. Edit: there's a certain charm to it
I had a hand on trying to live off being a Twitter artist. I quit my 9-5 and did a lot of commissions and had decent number of followers and engagement. But I never expected it to impact my ego and mental health so badly. You see it with how art youtubers would start beefs with each other to keep their relevance and how the internet can be incredibly hostile to the extreme. Eventually I went back to a 9-5 as a designer and I realized that a structured environment is where I thrive. The hustle and grind being an internet person is really not for everyone, you need a lot of mental fortitude to navigate that world.
this!! so much. omg i tried to do the online artist thing via Instagram, had a pretty solid following and fan base, but it absolutely killed my drive to do any type of art whatsoever. i ended up having to leave the account and move to a new one because i would get so much anxiety even looking at it. especially since i had this mentality that i had to keep posting “new” and “fresh” ideas all the time- it became more of a chore rather than something i enjoyed doing. i love making art and i am extremely passionate about it so losing that part of me, for a period of time, was very devastating. so you’re absolutely right that that kind of hustle and grind is not for everyone. all in all though, i’m happy to have my drive back with being creative again 💞💞
I would love to hear your thoughts on the "I don't dream of labor" trend. Obviously there is the anti capitalism aspect and going against the hustle culture mentality (yay!), but it seems as if many of these vídeos ignore the fact that most people can't just quit their 9-5 job.
Yes! I've only watched a couple of them so maybe others are different, but all my friends and I can only find minimum-wage, insecure, casual shift work service jobs, despite university qualifications and talent or whatever, and I can't see any way out. I don't find it gratifying when an upper middle class twenty something quits their 9-5 in a high growth industry to go freelance or something. The security of those jobs, man. I want that.
@@orladdin Exactly! The titles themselves irk me a bit as well. Who really "dreams" of labor? But even with a regular job, there are ways to be fulfilled/creative. Although as someone who is also working minimum wage jobs trekking through college, I often feel too exhausted to pursue other things.
Usually when you see a lot of young people wanting to get into these (for lack of a better term) overnight fame and success careers, like influencing, singing, modelling etc, it’s usually sign that they don’t have many job prospects and opportunities EDIT: I mean that that lack of prospects is indicative of a society/economy that doesn’t offer much hope for the future, not that the individuals themselves are hopeless
Yes they are usually lazy I see so many videos can you get me famous I do t want to work and smart ones have a job and do these as an extra or way to expand their business or whatever
Also most employee-type jobs in the 21st century are not pathways to even the middle class and involve a great deal of dehumanizing experiences. Why wouldn’t someone dream of doing creative, independent work for a great income? Make a better society instead of judging the kids, boomers.
As a small RUclipsr and someone who dreams of being a successful RUclipsr, this video was strangely relevant and comforting. I always worry about my dream not being sustainable and it's comforting to hear someone talking about making projects for the love of it, instead of to please the cursed algorithm. Thank you, Tiffany :) Your videos are always a joy to see on my feed.
@@Kasia_Luna, I also agree about the weird censorship in anime, especially within the lgbtq characters. Anime constantly puts out wlw and mlm characters for fan service, which is weird. I can respect Bunny not trying to change her content and self to 'stay relevant' and 'please the audience'. She obvs started the channel for her, and to connect with people like her, and it just unexpectedly took off and became hugely popular. But now ppl have moved on, but she still is the same, and hopefully can now continue to enjoy making videos the same way she did before becoming very mainstream popular. She's certainty made enough money, and obvs has lots of side hobbies, so for sure just ticking over with the amount of views she gets is enough, funds wise.
I couldn't agree more! I love respect for those who adjust their channels to stay relevant. It comes off as fake or insincere to me. I'd rather support bunny over any of them because bunny is doing what makes her happy, to hell with the money and popularity. Personally, Shane's video about her was pretty disgusting to me!
I remember Bunny getting so anxious that her numbers dropped, a few years back. It was bad and you could tell she was struggling. While I don't watch her that much anymore (all these unboxings and collecting stuff messes with my anxiety), I am happy she seems in a better place and makes videos that she likes (I still watch her tea vlogs, love them 😀)
And some of us weirdos have just discovered her. Maybe because I subscribe to Ask The Mortician and Vivian Tries….you tube thought Bunny’s grav3yardgirl would be appreciated.
In all honesty idk who she is however such creators are the best to me. They usually have the best fan base and truly do connect with their fans. For example my favorite youtubers are those that post content that is meant only for a specific audience, like say crime stories, and they make the audience connect together. It makes it so much easier to feel connected with strangers on the internet although you've never spoken to them before, and that is because you're all there for the same reasons ✨
My heart broke when you were saying you call yourself a flop weekly due to self esteem and how your videos perform. The whole time up until you said this I was (and throughout the video) so impressed and inspired by what you're saying. It's completely thought provoking and so well done. I honestly don't think I could ever be a youtuber as a job. the lack of stability scares me. And having so many people know who I am would send my anxiety through the roof .
It makes sense that being past your peak would be the best place to be as a youtuber, ESPECIALLY if you've been financially responsible while you were at your peak. You get all the fun of content creation but without all the downsides (although, they have been through their downsides...)
This reminded me of the incredible discussions Hank and John Green have had about "jumping the shark". Their situations are obviously different than your average beautuber, so the dialogue resonated with me in a larger "peak of your life" kind of sense.
@@schoo9256 oooohhh, John and Hank have a loooong history on the Internet. Their channel is called Vlogbrothers, but you might know them from Crash Course and Sci Show (their educational channels) or from their books (John wrote The Fault In Our Stars, and others; Hank wrote An Absolutely Remarkable Thing and A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor). They've been on RUclips since 2007 and have worked on a lot of projects (eg: they founded VidCon), so their insights when it comes to internet and RUclips things are very interesting.
Around 2013-2018 I had a RUclips Kids channel before this one that blew up, had several viral videos, and then completely died. (I made stop-motion short films with dolls, even worked with American Girl & Mattel Inc. a few times.) You PERFECTLY described the feelings of losing relevancy and the crushing defeat that comes with checking Creator Studio after you know you’ve peaked 😅 I basically accepted it and decided to move on as if I’d never done youtube- got a 9 to 5, am working on finishing up college, and am uploading on this channel on the side just for fun. I love your point that it’s integral to have a plan for when your “influencer” career ends!! It doesn’t mean you’ve failed, it just means your life is moving in a new direction :)
25:19 ironically being a youtuber used to be shameful and embarrassing because there was that stigma that it’s not a real job and that you need to do something “real”
My side of RUclips is mostly history, mythology, commentary, a little of makeup, movies, music and finances, soon coding will be added. Just run away from the massive RUclipsrs that mostly cater to teens and kids
i think it's better now, there's a lot more diversity in the content today. back then a lot of the big stuff was to be honest, a bit vapid and thoughtless. like all the vlogs and collab games back then, like theyre not bad but they dont come off as having a lot of effort made into them.
I swear to god Tiffany’s comment section at this point is just a list of great mid sized youtubers you should probably be subscribed to already lol, literally counted 12 other people I follow just on this video
I would love to watch a video on Brent Rivera and their squad and the effect that their content has on their audience who are primarily just children. Great video, by the way!!!
texan in tokyo literally decided one day they wanted a family and straight up put in their two weeks notice to youtube basically. They shut down all social media, Grace shut down her blog, and they completely ghosted the internet. According to their LinkedIn, they both now work in some corporate jobs in the US. I admire them a lot for doing that. They quit one of the most flexible jobs in the world, left Japan, and headed to the American corporate world just like that. That must have been incredibly difficult.
@@hwang9756 it was a rlly long time ago and i didnt follow it closely, i think i actually found the channel around the same time ppl were criticizing it a lot. basically from what i remember most criticism was just about grace not ryo (i think those are their names) mainly because she was doing a lot of begging/guilt-tripping ppl into giving them money, and the overall low effort some of her content seemed to have made a lot of ppl think of her as v entitled and lazy, and then ryo quit his job to help her youtube channel and ppl were like this isn't a good move. there was also generally some critiscism about her comic which i never really read so im not sure but i think ppl thought there were some racially insensitive things or like some racial fetishization on her part. i think it was generally wise they quit because looking back i think the situation might've been not super healthy w grace basically at home all day isolated in the country side some of the perceived "lazyness" ppl were getting might've been just depression.
I respect their dedication to not exploiting their kids a lot and even though I miss the laid back style of their vlogs I think that was the responsible move
Only a few minutes in but I just want to say how much I appreciate how honest you are about your feelings and the behind-the-scenes of being a RUclipsr. 💙 I'm sure I'm not the only one that's super interested in that kind of thing!
When you touched on getting a regular job, I immediately thought of the Slow Mo Guys. They have normal jobs in two parts of the world and meet up every now and again to film some videos. They have an audience of 14 million and work a regular job too. I think that's really nice, you can really pick up on that they're still just two dudes who love watching stuff explode in slowmotion.
I just found wheezywaiter at the beginning of quarantine and I love his videos! I also really enjoy that he's not the trendy young creator, he just brings something different.
I'm not even a YT creator but I love the wholesomeness of all the other creators in your comments. You seem to have hit a nerv and you have a great community here. I started watching you since the early internet analysis phase and really anjoy your channel.
For me personally, I love 99 percent of the RUclips videos I watch. What keeps me from watching or finishing a video is a lack of time. The internet is so oversaturated with videos and vlogs I don’t have the time to keep up with my favorite youtubers. 😳great video, very thoughtful!
Same. For the sake of work/school/mentally health I use an app on my phone that sets a limit on how many hours of social media I have per day. I literally do not have time to watch everything even without that limiter, and with it I have to pick and choose deliberately
I think I would still be watching her if her main channel videos didn’t became an endless stream of product placement that I just wasn’t interested in. I liked her very much, and her story of growth make me realize how the hell success works in RUclips space
I really respect creators who choose to take time off or work against the algorithm even when they’re seemingly at a career high. (See: Dan Howell’s relationship with RUclips)
yes! i feel like looking at dan and his beneficial/harmful relationship with his fan base and youtube is really interesting in the terms of what it’s like to be a youtuber and why people step away
What I'm concerned about young RUclipsrs & influencers throwing everything including education to chase fame. On the other side I see RUclipsrs started to prepare their other sources of income & basically know that eventually, they will change careers. Especially now when the cycle is way faster than a few years ago. I have so much respect for Cristine from Simply Nailogical that she still keeps her job.
How do you know they will need to change careers? There are lots of RUclipsrs that are in their 60's, 70's and beyond. If someone is talking about a timeless topic they can have a great channel their entire life. If they are a gamer that might be tough since that's mostly kids, but otherwise, not chasing fame is good and building a YT channel can be great your entire life.
charlie was such a positive role model on youtube even though he himself was just a teenager, and he continues to be super cool as an adult, just wins all around
Charlie is a prime example of how someone can "blow up" on youtube as a teen but not let that get to their head and turn into a circus of scandals and flexing. I love how he was able to bow out gracefully and on his own terms and still retain the friendship and respect of most of the friends he made on this platform.
Love this video. I would really like to take it a step further and question exactly WHY "dying" channels are viewed in such a negative and toxic light. Why do people see channels that used to get more views and think "This person is a has-been" "This channel is dying" "This person is not relevant anymore" like those are measures of worth or success? What does it say about the people who think these things? What insecurities are these a reflection of? As someone with a channel that did sorta peak in the early days of youtube, hearing that kind of talk scared me from trying new things. Nobody said it directly to or about me, but I saw plenty of my youtuber friends who trailed off and moved on to something else being spoken about in that way. So then it's like, okay I used to get more views, but now if I put work into these videos and don't get more then it appears like I'm trying too hard, or I'm failing, or I'm embarrassing myself. Why do people see it that way? Why does relevancy matter to so many people and what even makes a person "relevant", and when they're not relevant anymore, why do people literally want them to just disappear off the internet and never come back?
I'm soooo glad you're talking about this! I'm working on a video about psychological safety (and the lack of it) in the online creator space and how that links to so much of the burnout and fear we see in creators
It's sad because like a lot of people, I grew up during the birth of RUclips. I remember when RUclips was kind of like the Wild West and subsequently, being a "RUclipsr" wasn't a thing. I kind of miss the old RUclips, but things are destined to change and we therefore must be ready to roll with the punches.
Hello from a german viewer. The way you pronounced "Schadenfreude" was almost perfect, just the last vocal got lost and therefore it sounded a bit like good old Sigmund Freud :D And what is it for a syndrom, to feel proud bliss you if you (f.e. your country) gets directly adressed, even in the most trivial way haha? Fascinating, btw i love all of your videos 🥰
creator studio making us question EVERYTHING always 🙃thank you for talking about that! this topic has always been fascinating to me and i loved this video as always!
I love your channel and the way I see it , the more authentic it is , and the more natural it feels the better. No one wants to feel like they are watching an add the whole time lol. Like just keep doing you because your fans , myself included , love you for you !
I've never been so early for a video with subtitles! as a non-native english speaker that way is much easier for me to follow the video, and auto generated subtitles are sometimes bad. thank you so much!
I’m a content creator too. I’m not a youtuber, I make independent adult videos, but I find content about being a youtuber really relatable and validating, and I appreciate you for discussing it. Most people in my industry never publicly get personal because we have to put up this sexy image all the time. It’s so easy to get caught up in the numbers. I’m glad that at least it’s not public information how many clip sales I’ve made as opposed to the view count on youtube, so my metric performance can be more private. I love being a content creator but wondering what will be next (and why) is a big mystery. I don’t think it’s ever too early to start saving and exploring your ideas for what’s next. Anyway, thank you for sharing.
Would love to hear about this perspective more in depth. Its an aspect of content platforms dont like promoting and we hear SO little. I bet this type of fame would be so cool of story to tell.
I love how you bring up that there are benefits to leaving RUclips and going to another job. There is absolutely no shame with that and it speaks to the creators desire for true happiness 💕💕💕
Same, except that i grew older and had no longer interest in her mystery boxes, other wasteful hauls and personality that frankly crash against mine. So departure was natural, but i never held it against her that she did not stick with new video format, which i actually enjoyed. She could do half and half.
I used to love her "does this thing really work" series as a child, but honestly in the last few years, I've grown to worry about her. She often passes as simply 'quirky', but she's well into her thirties and all her content is about buying mystery boxes and collectible knick-knacks. She also seems to have a bottomless need to fill her home with increasingly creepy decorations. There is a difference between having a personality that not everyone understands and being unstable, and I'm genuinely worried that she's crossed that line in recent years. I hope she's okay behind the scenes.
@@alainaatk.6210 I agree, after not watching her channel for a bit, I felt uncomfortable with the lack of growth/maturity in her content. It would’ve been nice if she had grown up with her audience instead it seemed like she became super childish to connect with her young audience. Before she blew up she was a lot more alternative and would talk about ghost stories that were more teen young adult oriented. She needs to find a healthy balance
@@alainaatk.6210 Honestly she's the type that will be featured in Hoarders down the line. But at least she hoards things she like, not literal trash. I really do like her style and its fine if she never change.
Oooh, here it is, the concern trolling about people who like cReEpY decorations! Because people who collect things YOU think are “creepy” certainly must be unstable, right?
This video was extremely helpful to me: I recently experienced a growth spurt on my channel and it's given me severe anxiety every day since. I had one video that just kind of took off and the rush felt amazing but then the traffic died and I've been so stressed trying to come up with "what's next." This video really reinforced in me that as long as I'm happy with my content and I'm having fun, the ebbs and flows should be expected and it really shouldn't matter. Thanks for doing this. It's literally exactly what I needed today.
There was also another RUclips who went into massive debt because they were not being responsible with their finances for the same reason. I don’t remember what her name is but she’s white and American. Her channel is one of those creative diy for children type of channels. She made kinda a small series about not watching her spending habits and getting more than she could afford. She had to sell her customized home, moved into an apartment, etc. It was refreshing to see another youtuber being transparent(:
thats what always amazed me about people like jenna marbles, like she stared YT before it became this big money maker and then managed to keep her content down to earth and relevant for like a decade before she left. honestly we don't give her enough credit for managing to do that when 99% of channels gain massive popularity and then fall off in a few months or years
She didn’t take herself seriously but she was also incredibly consistent making videos every single week for all those years even if it was just one video they were all successful because of her humor and personality and eagerness to learn about what the internet was up to
Wowww charlieissocoollike is a DEEP CUT. That brought me back to a time on RUclips I had forget that I watched. This was a super interesting video! Love the insights you bring and how concise everything always is!!

Hey holomom
hi Simply! I love your videos! ❤️❤️
Hi to Menchie and Zyler
I kept thinking about you and Ben about how you decided to keep your day jobs. I really think it's the right route.
Seeing Tyler Oakley in the thumbnail made me realize how much of a dinosaur I am in RUclips years.
I haven’t seen his vid since 2015
Same with me & grav3yardgirl 😅
same hahah
How old are you?
SAME! * looks over at the Binge book on my shelf and reminisces over the Bethany Mota target collection * did we all get that feeling after seeing a joey graceffa video recommended the other day?😳
It really makes me sad when people don’t remember the ones we loved growing up
Omg I love your videos, wasn’t expecting to see you here.
What does that even mean? Do people have amnesia? Or early onset alzheimers? i mean seriously, what are you saying?
Maybe because when you grow you start liking different things which normal
@@jolenehoneycutt2973 No. Just that the people we loved growing up became irrelevant to us once we hit adolescence. Or, at least for me, once I hit high school. So, they no longer encompass our minds and we eventually almost forget they even existed. Hence, losing relevance.
Should we just continue to watch the same prior fur life just because of loyalty. That is rediculous
I started watching pewdiepie just a couple years ago and wanted to see what Marzia has been doing and got nothing :(
Tbh Marzia's had the financial security of a top youtuber spouse, making her quitting that much easier.
The trick is to never peak.
So true
HAHAHHAHA
Getting to the top is not hard staying at the top is
Then I’m succeeding lol
Boss move
One thing I've learned about myself working in a 9 - 5 is that I thrive in stability and enjoy a traditional office setting. I see so much "boss babe" and hustle culture rhetoric that makes working a 9 -5 seem like a bad thing when it doesn't have to be. Some people want to be entrepreneurs and be their own boss, others want an office job that gives a predictable workload and hours. Neither is bad, but right now people are really shitting on people who are working a 9 -5 and don't have a side hustle they're trying to make their primary source of income
same! I don’t do well without structure and I would therefore be terrible at being my own boss
@@trackandhp7 yep! I’d rather work my nonprofit job where I like what I do and have good coworkers
I love my (not so) 9-5 ❤
Just because they’re not in their peak anymore doesn’t mean they should give up.😭😂
Yer people are mean. I used to do that but now I try not to any more.
It is funny how we have reached the point of RUclips history where some channels with 1 million+ subscribers struggle to even get 50k views on a video.

wait i had no idea, i love that for him
Same for Charlie. His streams are really chill and comforting.
Oh a hundred percent. She got her bag, that was it.
I'm glad at least some people have sense when it comes to this. I always have to fight the urge to say the same thing too. She saw a chance to dip on her own terms and took it.

i feel like there's also a LOT of creators that started as a "i'm just like you" type of personality, and as they blew up, they tried to "maintain" this relatability. and obviously, it's quite hard to relate to someone who now lives in a mansion and orders take out 3x per day when you're living in a one bedroom apartment, struggling to make ends meet. also definitely needed to hear what you said about choosing your metrics of value at the end! another great video!
I would think a beautiful thing about being an independent creator is not being subjected to degrading performance evaluations. Don’t subject yourself to it if it leaves you more discouraged than inspired!
I think a 'performance metric' is a way for the company to whip you.
Lol that’s probably because you’re not relevant

Yesss that is such a great point!
Absolutely agree! The fact that my older videos can be found by people when they need them, even if it's years after they were initially created, is what I consider the beauty of RUclips!
But I also agree that it's easier not to stress about analytics so much when RUclips isn't your main (or only) source of income 😊
Remember, the YT algorithm works in wonders and for that reason, you have videos reccomended to u that were posted 4 years ago, lol
Imagine reaching a peak in the first place
I would almost describe the OC as a comedic lubricant, to help bring out the funniest version of you
bro, it takes conviction to follow what you truly are passionate about and not just the views
@@cryingeyebrows2773 this was so perfectly worded!! I 100% agree

I’m so happy there are captions already! I have auditory processing disorder and it’s hard for my brain to process what I hear without captions, and most videos don’t have captions for hours or days, if ever.
I greatly appreciate the thought you put into the video’s accessibility!
Always happy to! ❤️❤️❤️
Or OF
I was a neo-burlesque dancer for several years and got to meet a couple Legends and participate in fundraisers for them. It was always hard.
Good luck dear. I'm going through the same
This made me miss 2014 RUclips when Bethany mota, mylifeaseva, maybaby and Alisha marie dominated RUclips with the tumblr routines and school videos
Alisha is still around and thriving
hearing all of those names brought me back to my elementary days and now I feel kind of old lmao

The hustle and grind being an internet person is really not for everyone, you need a lot of mental fortitude to navigate that world.
this!! so much. omg i tried to do the online artist thing via Instagram, had a pretty solid following and fan base, but it absolutely killed my drive to do any type of art whatsoever. i ended up having to leave the account and move to a new one because i would get so much anxiety even looking at it. especially since i had this mentality that i had to keep posting “new” and “fresh” ideas all the time- it became more of a chore rather than something i enjoyed doing. i love making art and i am extremely passionate about it so losing that part of me, for a period of time, was very devastating. so you’re absolutely right that that kind of hustle and grind is not for everyone.
all in all though, i’m happy to have my drive back with being creative again 💞💞
what’s ur twitter?
Is it anti-capitalist though? I find the whole get-rich-on-the-internet thing to be very pro-capitalist
@@miaomiaou_ it isn't but they frame it as though it is.
Ofc.
Usually when you see a lot of young people wanting to get into these (for lack of a better term) overnight fame and success careers, like influencing, singing, modelling etc, it’s usually sign that they don’t have many job prospects and opportunities
EDIT: I mean that that lack of prospects is indicative of a society/economy that doesn’t offer much hope for the future, not that the individuals themselves are hopeless
🤡👊🏽
@@NafisaLondon what does that mean 😅

Yes they are usually lazy I see so many videos can you get me famous I do t want to work and smart ones have a job and do these as an extra or way to expand their business or whatever
Also most employee-type jobs in the 21st century are not pathways to even the middle class and involve a great deal of dehumanizing experiences. Why wouldn’t someone dream of doing creative, independent work for a great income?

As a small RUclipsr and someone who dreams of being a successful RUclipsr, this video was strangely relevant and comforting. I always worry about my dream not being sustainable and it's comforting to hear someone talking about making projects for the love of it, instead of to please the cursed algorithm. ❤️❤️❤️ same to you, Alexa!!
Hola Holly! Qué sorpresa verte aquí! Soy fan de tus videos :D
This reminded me of the incredible discussions Hank and John Green have had about "jumping the shark". Their situations are obviously different than your average beautuber, so the dialogue resonated with me in a larger "peak of your life" kind of sense.
I always think about John and Hank when I see these types of videos come up. Their perspective is so interesting and appreciated

i think it's better now, there's a lot more diversity in the content today. back then a lot of the big stuff was to be honest, a bit vapid and thoughtless. like all the vlogs and collab games back then, like theyre not bad but they dont come off as having a lot of effort made into them.

texan in tokyo literally decided one day they wanted a family and straight up put in their two weeks notice to youtube basically.

@@gwynhibbard571 I mean I meant more his thing with not uploading for years but yes that too
What I'm concerned about young RUclipsrs & influencers throwing everything including education to chase fame.
Pretty much
I'm soooo glad you're talking about this!
RUclips profiles were like MySpace!

Yes, agree. It makes it so much easier to actually comprehend the content 🤗
I’m just waiting to reach a peak that I can then fall from

I love how you bring up that there are benefits to leaving RUclips and going to another job. There is absolutely no shame with that and it speaks to the creators desire for true happiness 💕💕💕
I've had so much respect for graveyardgirl for just sticking to what she wants to do and staying true to herself

Breland! Now she does OnlyFans.
Wow
Indeed😊
thats what always amazed me about people like jenna marbles, like she stared YT before it became this big money maker and then managed to keep her content down to earth and relevant for like a decade before she left. honestly we don't give her enough credit for managing to do that when 99% of channels gain massive popularity and then fall off in a few months or years
She didn’t take herself seriously but she was also incredibly consistent making videos every single week for all those years even if it was just one video they were all successful because of her humor and personality and eagerness to learn about what the internet was up to
I don’t feel like I’ve hit my stride yet but I think about this a lot. I’d love to see an Internet analysis on educational channels.
