everyone's talking about Jenna Marbles, How is she even entertaining? She uploaded a video with the title "Claire's makeover" and that got 6.5 million views, Tell me why would 6.5 million people want to watch that? What's so entertaining on watching someone who's 33! years old act like a toddler by dressing up like a child in a full on claire's makeover. All the videos about is Jenna Marbles buying a bunch of childish stuff from clarie's and giving herself a makeover with it. Where is the "Relatable" in that? I find it so dump to be honest. Even grown adults on RUclips act like toddlers by the kind of content they still do. It makes them look 3 years old all over again.
I find it really offensive when these “influencers” act like it’s gross and sO hArD to work a 9-5 job or do “broke people things” like shop at Walmart.
i think a lot of youtubers like that never had to work to begin with. they either had wealthy families, or managed to get successful at a really young age so they didn't have to do a 'normal' job.
When you grow up poor it stays with you, and when you do get any amount of money it feels weird, like you shouldn't have it or don't deserve it. I feel like he's just trying to let people know that he didn't always have this and not flex on them and also maybe come to terms with the fact that he does have it. I mean he definitely missed the mark, but I think that's his mindset anyway
It's actually super easy to forget how successful Jenna Marbles has been financially because her personality hasn't changed and her content is still down to earth and funny
It's likely very intentional on the part of Jenna Marbles to not flaunt her wealth. Of course, it helps that she usually makes actual content that isn't dependant on milking her everyday life.
And they aren’t wrong considering how successful “haul” and “unboxing” videos are. I personally don’t care for them but those tend to get the most views. It’s beyond me.
Nozomi Tojo masquerading as a poor person in my opinion is worse because it’s like if you are rich, embrace it, be grateful for it, don’t tru to act like you are someone you aren’t. Honestly I’d rather someone brag about being rich because at least they aren’t lying.
definitely being rich and trying to act as if they are poor,if you're rich and earned your success its not a big deal unless if you're one of those kids in my schools or pretty much everyones school who only brags about her parents fame that's very annoying
Kylee Trenton I think she did in as much as she cared less about the fame as it grew and more about making herself happy and having fun. It’s something fairly unique to youtube in general I think, seeing how her success made her into a more genuine person because she isn’t trying to grow a channel anymore. It’s her beautiful plant that she can do whatever she wants with because it doesn’t need careful consideration.
I noticed a pattern with youtubers who have remained “relatable” like Sofia Nygard, Jenna Marbles, Pewdiepie etc. are often people who started their channel’s once they were adults and often already in their early 20’s. It makes me wonder if there is a correlation and if having a few years of adulthood and the struggles that come with it have allowed them to remain a bit more humble and levelheaded. This doesn’t necessarily mean that someone who starts their channel in their 20’s is automatically a better person, they just are more likely to understand the privileges that RUclips stardom have awarded them. But it’s just a thought!
Hannah Koenig That actually makes a lot of sense! Another RUclipsr who I think is still relatable is Colleen Ballinger, and maybe it was because she worked so hard as an adult to get where she is now. Maybe it is just a matter of maturity and whether you have been exposed to adult issues…
I think the reality of bills, and the insecurity of changing jobs a few times changes their opinion on spending money, whereas younger RUclipsrs who've maybe had one part time job to have extra cash for shopping before they started blogging and then started making a large amount very quickly without ever really having to depend on their savings or being super frugal before.
The biggest shift you may see is a political shift as seen by Laci Green (left to right), Cult of Dusty (left to right to Communist) or myself split between PorygonFanatics and HammableOfCarthage (Ancap to Democratic Socialist/Chavista).
i love bestdressed as a youtuber because she doesn't pretend to be poor. she talks about saving money and thrifting and things like that, but she also states that she's in a privileged position and cannot relate to a lot of strugges people face, and she's super open about her privilege as well as her issues
@@audreywang3060 everyone changes over the years which is natural. It depends on how you view it. But I still like her. I think she is actually changing for the better because in LA she never got to be her true self. Also, she actually is caring for the pandemic and is just staying in her apartment ACTUALLY being safe so if I were in New York all by myself I would change a little bit as well. But my opinion tho
@Freedom Fighter dude yea she's made it clear before that she didn't grow up poor and that she's from a small suburban town in maryland. that is not a secret. and if she resells things she thrifts then it's cause she alters them and adds something to it. to say that she's never worked is a complete lie lol
Honestly one of my favorite RUclipsrs is Micarah Tewers. She's really fun and charming while also being somewhat educational. Her channel revolves around sewing and her daily life living in her RV.
I call that The Zoella Effect She was the first one to suddenly get absurdly rich as a teenager and went from Primark hauls (extremely cheap clothing store here in the UK) to suddenly making tours of her £2M mansion
I’d also like to add Cristine, or simplynailogical, she acknowledges that she makes a lot of money from RUclips, but she encourages education. Like literally holding a contest every year to pay a semester of someone’s college tuition
ughhhh seeing the ace family "working" at the restaurant for "24 hours" made me cringe a whole lot. I currently work part time as a waitress and there was this "celebrity" who used to work for us (bcs the owner REAALLLYYY cares abt fame n publicity) and jesus christ never have I met a person so entitled to themselves before. Basically he intentionally took breaks when the restaurant was busy (the rest of us usually take breaks before or after our shift, but no he just stopped in the middle of the chaotic situation and said "kay im gonna eat lol"), and he told the chef to cook him this dish that takes a longer time to cook, and bcs the chef thought it was for a customer he cooked it only to find out that it was for our dear "celebrity." Not only did he slow down our work during busy hours by interrupting our chef, he literally took his fucking time eating his food until the crowd died down. And what's worse, the owner always sided with him, literally blaming me for not refilling water that was located outside the kitchen that the "celebrity" was conveniently standing next to when my job that night was mostly inside the kitchen prepping dishes. I don't care if you're rich or famous. And acknowledging the fact that other ppl would see u differently is important too. But if you start going around using that to ur advantage then ure a piece of shit.
Shane acts like he's poor but he's literally rich, obviously he doesn't have money like jeffree but he still has a lot of money compared to 9 to 5 workers.
I wouldn’t say he acts like he’s poor, but coming from a poor family to suddenly making more money than you’re used to, it’s difficult to come out of that “poor” mindset.
Jerom Maat no he isn’t if you see his series with Jeffree star he says how his salary isn’t that high from like from a a bit higher than normal paying job but way lower than other youtubers and ofc influencers too
Shamey Ames I’m talking about their money on their paychecks not what they save Jeffree gets paid millions of dollars as “paycheck” while Shane only gets a few thousand every week
I feel like the fact that Jenna has a Masters degree in psychology would keep her not only grounded but aware of her actions as she knows how her actions affect others at a tertiary level.
Also explains why she took the fish episode very seriously, I love her so much for how professional she is when it comes down to it, a lot of youtubers and online personalities lack that rn
sapy i think she bought the wrong size fish tank or sum?? but she made a 30 minute apology about it and that fr shows how much she cares and takes issues seriously 🥺❤️
I feel like Aspyn used to be in the same category with like MyLifeAsEva, Bethany Mota etc. but now she is married, has a kid, and has just matured way more. She doesn’t try to be the “relatable teenager” anymore(which I am very happy about, by her content is enjoyable and not cringey)
Adison Lopez when she showed the group of people in that category I was so caught off guard seeing aspyns old content, completely forgot she was part of that kind of content! I like her content now. She has been able to mature her content along with herself, cool to see a successful content transition like that
I think that one of the reasons that she's so great is that she hasn't lost sight of the ground. She prioritizes her personal life before youtube, and consistently releases creative and entertaining content.
I mean i can somewhat understand it. No he isn’t poor but growing up being really short on money i would believe that stays with you. Its a mindset more than an economical shortage at this point. Its pretty obvious he doesn’t use his money nearly as much as he could and he still seems very humble regarding his fame to be honest. Nevertheless he’s not poor and shouldn’t claim to be so but he can still be overwhelmed by others wealth without meaning any harm.
@@bitchmaffia9956 idk man, buying a mansion in LA with land around it, having multiple expensive cars, buying gucci stuff just for fun, getting a huge bouncy house, goats, dogs, a trampoline, a coffin, renting a whole ass child, ect. That's a lot and I personally couldn't afford a single thing I mentioned :/
It's only really in context to him having a lot less money than someone like jeffree star, he knows he isn't poor because he has been in the past and joking around about it with for example jeffree star isn't a big deal as long as you remember the difference in their financial situations and get that's what he's referring to
And there werent 10 ads on a seven minute video and cats like keyboard cat or nyan cat ruled cyberspace But also really happy dogs are getting appreciated this decade
now people are doing it bc they have pay bills. mostt people want to stop doing youtube but they cant bc youtube is a major source of income bc without youtube they dont havre100,000 of thousands of dollars.
yes and before the algorithm changed to make RUclipsrs have to put out content regularly for them to stay on top. I remember Tomska getting 10s of millions of views and only posting once every six months because everyone loved his animations. He could actually _take time_ to make quality content.
I think Cody Ko is really underrated in this sense, he's extremely popular and likely makes a ton of money yet he still makes the same kinds of videos and doesn't really ever talk about his wealth
He and Noel still have not apologized for the offensive things they have said, and have doubled down on them occasionally. I would rethink your position on them.
You aren’t meant to be a brand. You are meant to be a person. Its hard to watch RUclipsrs and celebrities turn themselves (personality, like-ability, daily activities) into a show for people to watch and buy into. Dangerous game. Especially when you are young and media savvy. Learn to live life without an audience. It’s okay to create but keep it separate from everything you are.
@@nm541 But she said that she was gonna use them nevertheless. Perhaps she gave some to friends and family and use the rest. I may be wrong but she seems so sincere.
It def is wasteful and as someone aspiring to be in the environmental field its not ideal. However i am interested in the content and enjoy her personality
@@nm541 there's a flipside to that argument that safiya really invests in her videos. you can tell she comes from a "content producer" background, her stuff is always well made and she's usually got several videos in production at the same time. i think she spends that money knowing it's a good investment for her channel, she understands that it's a business and a brand. i don't agree with her spending so much on unethical produced stuff like on Wish, but at least with her makeup science stuff she ends up giving the end product back to her subscribers in giveaways
james charles: changed his personality and continues to become less and less relatable jenna marbles: the same relatable dork she’s always been even though she’s gained money and fame
Not to defend James because I do not like his actions, but you are more easily led astray when you have such a meteoric rise at such a young age. Still not cool though!
Jenna Marbles id definitely depressed. She looks like shes given up on life, and her content reflects that. She also snaps at Julien on their podcast and takes things way too personally. She should just quit YT if she gives no fucks, but I guess she loves the money.
I’ve worked medium wage since I was a sophomore in high school and after watching this, I’m honestly so grateful to have that experience. I couldn’t imagine dropping out of high school to be a RUclipsr and never even being able to relate to working a day in your life
I'm pausing the video on the Pham part to say this. As a greek person, i am angry she said people shouldn't travel to greece because we're economically and financially unstable. I mean, it's very true. We are very unstable in those aspects but if people stop visiting us, we're gonna have to probably sell our country. Literally. Tourism is our biggest source of income and we are in desperate need of it. Please don't let our instability stop you from coming!
Delaney De La Torre Did you really just say Jeffree is humble? Are you people serious. He’s done several videos about buying makeup from Walmart and Walgreens... where millions upon millions of people shop and get makeup from. He was laughing the entire video and talking about how he hasn’t stepped a foot in one of those places in a long time. He is not relatable at all. You’re just a fan still, so you and many others don’t see it.
heyitsjoshco [Josh Ocampo] In their 30-40 after they will quit RUclips and all that RUclips money and fame will be gone they will remember how stupid they were to not go to school or at least learn a skill to be able to sustain their lives for not just a period of time but forever
especially in this era where you see tons of new RUclipsrs emerging, trying to be popular, the old popular RUclipsrs will realize how irrelevant they have become
so true, she spends MONEY on making her videos but usually on supplies for crafts or things for her dogs and not on big ticket luxury goods for herself. definitely helps to prevent alienating her general audience while still using her wealth to create interesting content
Sam Serrao since when were david’s videos relatable ?? he’s never been a “relatable” youtuber so it wouldn’t make sense to call him out for having a tesla and a really nice house. tbh he never really brags about having a lot of money
the moment I realized Emma wasn’t relatable anymore was when she made a video with the Dolan twins and James Charles where they shopped for each other and they all spent like at least thousand like it was nothing
honestly now she doesn’t put much of her life with her friends on youtube, she seems more relaxed and like a weight has lifted. when she was with the dolan twins and JC, she almost HAD to be the “newbie to LA” who should be spending all their money and making original videos. but now she hangs out with her friends in private and doesn’t put it all on youtube. she also seems to have got her stuff together now. she has her own apartment and goes to the gym/ has a good diet/ spends fine with her parents/ etc. she also has two days, which sound silly to say, but she’s given herself some responsibility. honestly i think by the fine you become as popular as she is, it’s hard to be the same “relatable” person as you were 3 years ago. she lived in her moms house and then in an apartment with her mom she got stalked and it wasn’t safe for her (she had money and that made her a target for crime and stuff). not here to be sucking up to her i just think that sometimes it’s hard to be the same as you were 3 years ago when she grew up 😊
Yeah. I had to pause the video and stare at the wall for a sec. Like can you imagine being this baffled by the concept of normal people working normal jobs every day.
I do think that Drew Gooden did a great job covering how RUclipsrs often get famous for being relatable and then they lose their relatability and become less likable with that. That being said, regardless of Ellen's behind the scenes personality, I watched her "Relatable" stand up special and it was hilarious because of how absurdly unrelatable it was.
If I suddenly earned a lot of money, I’d definitely buy nicer things, move into a bigger house, etc. I think I’d be a bit hypocritical for calling someone else unrelatable for doing it. I think it’s a bit simpler than that. My theory: These people were always unpleasant. it’s just becoming more obvious to their audience the more they share about themselves.
I completely agree with you. It is hypocritical, and even then why is it so important for everyone to be relatable in the first place. It is bothersome if they still “act relatable” so I do get that. As someone who has grown up very very poor, it shouldn’t be competition of who is the poorest/ most relatable or deserving of nice things.
I don't think that's what it's about... It's not that that's unrelatable, like if you take Jenna Marbles, yeah she lives in a big house, has 3 dogs and buys a lot of useless items to carry out all of her weird videos... but people still enjoy them! It's because the essence of who she is as a person hasn't changed. She's still loud and funny and weird and people click with that because that's who she's always been (imo she's actually even gotten better with time because she's stopped giving a shit about whether or not her videos are going to fit the algorithm/be well received). It's more like if your content has always been relatable and people like you, and then you make a crap ton of money and this completely different lifestyle is suddenly your main goal, but you're still pushing the relatability thing - that's annoying. Not because you can't be proud of what you've got, but because that's all that matters to you anymore and you've lost touch with an audience that was primarily interesting in you because u were "just like them". Then it gets worse when and they can't tell why people are complaining about how entitled they're acting, or make weird "you changed" videos
i think that’s not the point of the video, there’s nothing wrong w making money, just that a lot of people let it affect their content in a way that’s detrimental to their original brand, creating a disconnect that makes them unlikeble to their original viewers
What annoys me the most is people like Shane Dawson. The way he says he is poor, while we all know he lives in a mansion, wears branded clothes and etc. Also the way he cried on the floor on one of his “documentries” while wearing Balenciaga because Jeffree said he is making less money. I-
im in the age category that has seen the "girly girl exaggerated" content (even though I was a little late) and also the "white girl who will probably move to la" era that's happening/winding down? and it's really just shocking. they really are so different but it seems like other things follow suit, (musically->tiktok) (Instagram changing) (vidcon->playlist) and I guess the new "relatable aesthetic" content creators are changing a lot and it's very interesting to see how they are going to change a new wave of social media culture. (I think it's kinda already going downhill with aesthetic culture kinda turning to flex and unrelatable culture with some creators) but overall how this is going to change.
@@meowdyllic even when they get involved into drama they do whatever they can to have everyone becoming on there side, they threaten whoever involved them into the drama and say it's all lies, The ace family does that, They do it and still make money off it. They just want money. So that is why The ace family always defends themselves during any drama so that there brand can still stay together for content and money. a fucking disgrace is what it is.
@@reecee2488 it isn't high quality like saf video where she goes into detail but it's exactly what people need Jenna to be. High quality video where you can shut down your brain and just enjoy it. It's low effort to absorb what's been told but it's high quality in that it's not filmed on a potato and doesn't give motion sickness
There's also a huge difference between making content focused on relatability and making contents about your daily life. If their channel leans toward sharing their privileged life its not alienating their audience rather it's just how life has been going on for themselves and some people enjoy those type of contents, their rawness, although it might look ignorant to some but we just got to accept what they really are
Just blows my mind that so many wealthy youtubers, especially when they didn’t grow up or start off rich, start to take being poor as a joke as if that’s not one of the most stressful and depressing things people go through
I hate when Shane outright says he’s “poor” cuz he’s not obviously... But when he’s shocked by price tags I think it comes from growing up poor. He really doesn’t spend his money quite like other RUclipsrs. Jeffree was the one who got him to spend on luxury items.
I think he just means he's not as rich as people think. Especially not compared to Jeffree, Tana, Jake.. etc. He did state he didn't want to come across as "pretending" to be poor because he knows he's not. He just doesnt want to use the money and flaunt. Maybe Im reading too far, bc Im a fan loool 😂 but I guess I get what you mean.
TrulyTaekook he doesn’t make more money that them. You don’t know this stuff. He doesn’t put adds in most of his videos anymore. He does make money yes, but we wouldn’t know weather he is making more money that the people you mentioned. Stop fishing for things you can say to prove your point.
He says “I’m poor when I’m with Jeffree,” not that he’s poor. He’s saying that comparatively to Jeffree, shane really isn’t that wealthy. This difference is especially reflected in the series when they discuss how much shane is going to make from the palette.
He grew up being poor and even tho he isn't, he may feel like he is. He most definitely doesn't mean it in a bad way and it's probably just something mental. He also said that if he admitted to being rich, he'd be scared that it all will go away.
micarah tewers is a great example of this. yes, most of us don't sew that much and yes, most of us don't act like her, but her content has just gotten better and better. she also still feels like a real person, and all of her videos about buying things don't seem to be rubbing it in your face. she really is one of my favorite creators, and one of the most genuine ones as well.
@@DM-lu5lw yea, simply nailogical does a college tuition giveaway every year and donates all her merch sales to the cat cafe she got her cat menchie from. She makes bank but is proactive and conservative about it. Safiya and Tylor dont really flex tho.

I don’t understand the concept of spending millions or hundreds of thousands of dollars on a mansion when you’re a literal teenager. My biggest goal in life right now as a teenager is to get an apartment, no matter how much money I have. Also if I did make millions of dollars on social media or from whatever else, I would want to donate it to people in need, not as a “I want people to think that I am a good person,” but just because I genuinely don’t think that I would need that much money for my basic necessities.
I literally watched Haley Pham transform in front of my eyes. she used to be really cool and had good content then boom she got pretentious as hell and started acting all high and mighty
i know you commented this like a month ago but i relate so much I had to comment. Yea EXACTLY, i used to love haley's content and her personality like when she had this cute song at the beginning of he videos. Also her school vlogs were so funny and relatable. I totally understand what you mean by she transformed in front of my eyes, like it was gradual but suddenly her videos just seemed detached and a show off of " look at how PERFECT my life is, #relation goals # model etc and you can really see her trying to put on the act of relatable girl but its so hard to watch.
actually Ryan Trahan did not have a Tesla at 16. He worked RLY hard to get it. I also think that Haley STILL has good content and is not "all high and mighty" just my opinion.
Sophia this isn’t true at all.. he just bought a tesla a couple months ago because he’s a successful youtuber and he’s 20-21 i believe. and she bought a house on her own with her own money
@@cookwithkids3765 Same, I love Haley and she talks about how she saved fro over a year to provide for her mom. She even addressed the fact that she had changed and was focusing a lot on views. In my onion she is back to her old self now if not just a bit more mature. Also with the house thing, they work film and literally spend so much time in their house so they might as well invest in a house that are going to stay in. I don't know I'm kind of going on a rant right now.
For me personally young creators lose me when they drop out of school or act like there isn’t value in school because of how they got big on the internet. James Charles and his brother did this when they had their Brothers and Sisters videos, they talked about wanting to leave HS early which is such a big no no for their young audience. They also disparaged college as where people go to behave badly which I don’t think comes off well at all from two people who didn’t go to college. They both claimed that their internet fame taught them more than college would have which certainly it taught them different skills but the average person will probably get further with a college degree than a RUclips channel. Again it’s mainly because their viewers are very young, it makes it more uncomfortable for me to listen to them say advice that maybe 5 kids in their audience will pull off.
About Haley Pham, I used to like her back when she was making cute quirky high school videos. I took a break from her videos for a bit, but I came back and she DEFINITELY changed. Her entire personality was just kinda wack.
She even tells people to unsubscribe half the time, lmao. She never does that "like and subscribe!!!!" at the beginning of the video either, which I really appreciate.
@yall better appreciate hoseok one thing is fishing for suscribers when you're a small, young creator like she was at the start and another one is trying to get ppl to suscribe when your peak has passed. for years now jenna hasn't been fishing for suscribers.
Jenna is a humble queen and I love that she just enjoys her life and her success on the downlow. She deserves it. Her, Julien and the pups all deserve the world.
A good example of a relatable RUclipsr who blew up and still remained humble and relatable is Joanna Cedía and I believe it’s because of how she may use her revenue to reinvest into her channel with all of her elaborate works which obviously don’t come cheap. And she still remains fully honest and open about whatever she’s talking about. Most underrated relatable RUclipsr.
Cr1tikal is ultra relatable, even though he's pretty rich now. He lives in a pretty normal house and goes to normal stores, but he gives away a lot of money to charities and his fans.
Honestly, the thing that bothered me the most about the Hayley Pham trip thing was how she criticized Greece so harshly as if it was an amusement park. We should all know by now that instagram is extremely fake. Its kind of offensive knowing that every single place has it's good and bad things, doesn't matter if I'm Greek or not. Not everything in Greece looks like Mikonos ok? The lack of respect and fake expectations really hurted us man
I just came back from Athens yesterday. I loved the country. Even with stupid ignorant influencers and their audience, there are still so many people in the world who will actually do some research and get their own opinion. Everybody I know thinks highly of Greece, whether they've been there or not :)
@@sofiamitchell5314 I was only in Athens, Hydra, Poros and Egina but everything was wonderful, from the people, to the food, to the landscape and hospitality from locals. Loved every bit of it ❤
@@rocioosunabeltran9227 ah yes! We really try to be kind to tourists because there are so many and we love how much they actually appreciate Greece. :)
Sofía Mitchell I agree. It’s Hayleys fault for planning the trip to Greece wrong. Like it’s not the country’s fault she had a bad trip, it was her own fault lmao. She even tried justifying to not go to Greece because they’re economically not doing well. And I’m like so? So what? Doesn’t mean that you won’t have a terrible trip lol
That’s complicated. Most people don’t do it consciously. There’s a few different reasons we follow creators and influencers: they make interesting content, they make content you can relate to and/or are themselves relatable, they have lived you can aspire towards, or they have the type of personality that your friends typically do.
Now, I know Ashley of bestdressed isn't a super big youtuber, but I admired the fact that she mentions her position of privilege, and does indeed remain down to earth with her viewers by acting kind of like a big sister with them. She is also honest with the fact that she gets clothes for free from brands, and how she indeed tries to be sustainable and responsible with her fashion.
TroyceTV used to get death threats and thousands of dislikes on his videos because he called out their BS years ago. I’m really glad people are starting to wake up. They exploit their child viewers into giving them money
I genuinely think Catherine might be a good person away from austin. Austin is the rotten apple except he’s super toxic and irritating and I think he brings down the rest of the family. I hated Catherine too until I saw a video of her “getting rid of” Austin’s jet ski and then having to use Elle as a shield because she looked scared of his reaction. I think he is really controlling and toxic. Plus she always apologizes when Austin fucks up and she is way too good for him.

People that go out to buy Gucci “slides” are completely changing what those companies started off as and what they should be. One of my favourite blouses is Gucci. Bought it second hand for about £30. Beautiful design, fabric and very simple. Only if you look at the tag, you know the brand. What happened to appreciating good design and craftsmanship? I don’t get it.
looking good has never been cheaper, but "Fashion" has never been more expensive. the expense is the underlying value for many narcissistic people, rather than the utility of an item. it's a way to signal your status in the hierarchy, as a way to possibly climb that hierarchy. climate town's video on fast fashion is a good place to start. ruclips.net/video/F6R_WTDdx7I/видео.html
As a lower middle class person who is able to cover my bills even if money is tight, the idea of becoming that rich and buying a purse worth 50K or whatever "luxury" brands cost instead of helping lift someone else out of poverty or donating to a variety of causes that could save lives and the planet just blows my mind. I'm not in their shoes, so what do I know, but what a stupid gross and honestly pathetic way to spend money. A way to stay "relatable" after becoming rich is to keep enough to be secure and comfortable but share the rest -- essentially don't become disgustingly rich. Why is this so hard.
I don’t mind if a RUclipsr has money, but please don’t minimize your wealth, act poor, or patronize your non wealthy viewers. Shane: acts poor, but clearly has money. It’s obnoxious. I like him, but not a fan of the “I’m poor” line. Jeffree Star: clearly has money and is honest about how much money he has. I’m cool with it. He has earned it, worked for it, and doesn’t pretend he lives a modest lifestyle or patronize those who don’t. And that’s just his personality, so it works for his channel. Jenna Marbles: the personification of humility. I will never tire of watching her. Ace Family: I think there fast food worker video says it all. They are awful.
It’d be hard to live off more than about 50k a year if I was a RUclipsr. You just never know when the gravy train will end, and if you get used to spending a million a year what do you do when you’re making 20k a year at Walmart because you have no other skills?
Jenna does good because she doesn’t try too hard, and she doesn’t try to act poor or rich, she acts like a normal person and that’s what makes her likable
Shane Dawson’s only personality trait is “Being bRoKE” yet he is LITERALLY a multi-millionaire. Let me repeat that, MULTI-MILLIONAIRE. The cognitive dissonance that is required for him to even utter the words “I’m broke” is just...... whew. Can’t even imagine.
Chloe Wiley He has been poor for most of his life though. He only learned to really start spending more money (buying gucci etc) recent times. He still wears worn out shirts with holes in them, drives an old ass jeep, etc. He generally only talks about “being broke” when he’s comparing himself to someone waaaay wealthier like jeffree. I agree he sometimes says it and I go like “shut up” but I get why he says it.
@Welcome To Poppy's World yes she built a mock farm where she would dress up in a silk milk-maid outfit and pretend to milk cows and pet perfectly groomed sheep. There's a reason she was guillotined.
Eline Hoes that’s actually a myth but the idea behind it is that she was really disconnected from the real world and French people, which is definitely true
i think also though it's important to remember that these people have been making videos over the course of several formative years and obviously your personality will change as you grow up like that's life. and blaming people for changing and growing up is extremely hurtful b/c its not really something you can control.
The only point I disagree with is that Jefree isn’t trying to be “relatable” when he’s eating Burger King, Taco Bell, etc. He just really really likes fast food
I agree I lost think that he is more relatable to a certain audience but not like the way of his lifestyle but the way he think and acts plus a lot of his audience watches him because he is funny and entertaining and for his credibility on make up that doesn’t mean they watch him solely for him being relatable
Megan Ealey ya I also think jeffree doesn’t try to be relatable at all. He just wants to show how far he’s gotten by working his ass off and being an entrepreneur. Aka he flexes. People watch him pretty much solely because of that, and because of the emotional shane content (which does make him emotionally relatable).
Megan Ealey and he’s not relatable just bc he likes greasy fast food either. It’s not relatable to eat Burger King in his private jet that’s ridiculous. Donald Trump eats McDonald’s everyday and he couldn’t relate to a “poor” upper class person.
it’s wild because even watching jenna’s new house video just elicited feelings of pride and happiness for her. maybe because she’s been around and “in my life” for ten years and it’s like watching your hardworking big sis get something she deserves...or maybe because it wasn’t about how big and fancy it is but just the fact that they were proud of getting to own a home for the first time, together. idk but jenna is just so sweet and mindful and self aware and it’s easy to celebrate her successes with her.
I feel like what Jenna spends her money on is what *I* would spend theoretical money on -- no matter what my income is, I'm not going to wear Gucci slides, because I feel like they're ugly and wasteful. I would ABSOLUTELY buy a crateload of Halloween costumes for my 17 dogs. The mansion is okay because we all know it's mostly just for Kermit.
@@nessapie8407and watching her videos you probably don't really even think about how much she spent on them. The money spending is just a catalyst for her content, it's not a part of the content itself
@@mmybickers i think that's a huge part of her popularity and appeal to millennials. like she's achieved the real millennial dream; not of obscene wealth and fast cars, but a nice well-lit home with her supportive partner where she plays video games and does weird shit and has a bunch of pets and plants.
haley pham confronted her change and explained so well, having so much popularity can really change a person and we can't really blame them. But she came back so fast and is so herself now and i love it. I feel like she's grown so much and so respect her for recognizing her change and what she's dealing with.
I don't see any problem with her. I mean obviously you won't buy the same things when you get more money. Also, that's her own money. If we like watching her buy unnecessary stuff,it is OUR(VIEWER'S) fault
I just watched Micara Tewers' new video, in which she reveals that she bought a house. It's an amazing 14 minutes of watching her be excited and having fun, and in the end I almost felt like _I_ bought a house. It's one of the most relatable videos I have ever seen, and I'm not even close to thinking about whether I could buy a house one day. Anyways, this seemed relevant
When you played a clip of NoFlex I actually cackled! Cody and Noel are great creators and are super down to earth. They understand their position, have fun together and are just good friends. They even realize that they are getting out of touch with the "Youth" and try to be understanding and make honest apologies when they learn they were wrong about something. I just really respect them as people and happy to see how far they've come. It feels like respect going both ways is a major portion of relatablity as well as staying informed. Super cool video!
These rich people trying to live 'poor for a day' literally remind me of Marie Antoinette and co., when they build a fake mini vilage to play sheepherders. On the grounds of Versailles of course. *Proceeds to eat cake offendedly*
@@jennamcfly they did! Search for the Queen's hamlet - it's a mock of a farmhouse. Charming and utterly unrealistic. Impossible not to admire it with a certain level of head shakes.
A better example from Marie Antoinette is her portrait after she miscarried but the hall of mirrors is in the background. She literally was trying to relate to those who also lost children but she's a queen.

There are so many RUclipsrs who I used to watch back in the day that I just have absolutely no interest in anymore. Of course, my taste has changed and so has their content but I do feel the same way, the OGs have become wildly unrelatable. Naturally, people grow and their ambitions will change but so much of their content has shifted from "having fun doing collabs in my bedroom" to "watch me live" and then the whole 'losing relatability' thing really shows because all you see is them in their house or something. It used to be about entertainment and now it feels like filling the RUclips hole because this is their job. Luckily, there are a few wholesome OGs that I still love and occasionally slip back into watching like Tyler Oakley and Jenna Marbles and their content really makes my day.
ok but like is no one gonna talk about how this video was made with "chapters" i absolutely love the way she made so yuo could see the topics she discussed
@@karoliinakettu1353 so is it bad they're furnishing their house and having vacations? Marzia's Instagram is none of pewdiepie's "content". He never even moves out of his usual setup lol.
My issue with Shane is that he hasn’t “grown” as a person. His personality still revolves around “oh look I’m ugly and disgusting and poor” which has been his shtick since 2016. I dunno, but his personality feels more like a character than somebody who wants to be taken seriously. It’s just boring now to watch him repeat the same gestures, faces, and jokes😐😐
Yeah it’s getting super annoying. I literally have to stop watching the video to process how weird it is that he has millions of dollars and is saying he is ugly when he looks perfectly fine
even the word "relatable" sounds like it's fake now
astrid kjellberg I--

That's been the deal since Vine was a thing
Never thought I'd see another kjellberg
SammyPebbles excuse me vine WAS AMAZING even if it wasn’t relatable
everyone's talking about Jenna Marbles, How is she even entertaining?

When she started talking about how great Shane Dawson was I automatically thought “this must be from 2019”
shane YAW

I think that shane thinks that being “humble” means acting poor
Yeah it’s almost annoying
When you grow up poor it stays with you, and when you do get any amount of money it feels weird, like you shouldn't have it or don't deserve it. I feel like he's just trying to let people know that he didn't always have this and not flex on them and also maybe come to terms with the fact that he does have it. I mean he definitely missed the mark, but I think that's his mindset anyway
@@gray1648 but he reiterates it so much is very obvious he tries too hard to seem relatable.

Kyleigh Caicedo YES!!
Yeah even when her videos weren't great, she never jumped away from who she was - which is admirable. Her views never dropped as a result.
It's all for the dogs; the dogs deserve that house
It's likely very intentional on the part of Jenna Marbles to not flaunt her wealth. Of course, it helps that she usually makes actual content that isn't dependant on milking her everyday life.

only mr beast can make that work
idk whats worse: being rich and bragging about it or being rich and masquerading as a poor person
Nozomi Tojo masquerading as a poor person in my opinion is worse because it’s like if you are rich, embrace it, be grateful for it, don’t tru to act like you are someone you aren’t. Honestly I’d rather someone brag about being rich because at least they aren’t lying.

Jenna Marbles is a perfect example of someone who doesn’t let fame get to her head
She's the perfect example of everything honestly.
She’s just a perfect example of a good person and youtuber
i agree. i love that she still makes the same sort of content and hasn't 'sold out' at all.
Jenna Marbles just makes me happy at the fact that a person like that exists. It makes me happy that other people appreciate her as much as I do.
Really good point! They had already formed their personalities possibly?
The biggest shift you may see is a political shift as seen by Laci Green (left to right), Cult of Dusty (left to right to Communist) or myself split between PorygonFanatics and HammableOfCarthage (Ancap to Democratic Socialist/Chavista).
That makes sense
i love bestdressed as a youtuber because she doesn't pretend to be poor. she talks about saving money and thrifting and things like that, but she also states that she's in a privileged position and cannot relate to a lot of strugges people face, and she's super open about her privilege as well as her issues

I currently work part time as a waitress and there was this "celebrity" who used to work for us (bcs the owner REAALLLYYY cares abt fame n publicity) and jesus christ never have I met a person so entitled to themselves before. Basically he intentionally took breaks when the restaurant was busy (the rest of us usually take breaks before or after our shift, but no he just stopped in the middle of the chaotic situation and said "kay im gonna eat lol"), and he told the chef to cook him this dish that takes a longer time to cook, and bcs the chef thought it was for a customer he cooked it only to find out that it was for our dear "celebrity."
Not only did he slow down our work during busy hours by interrupting our chef, he literally took his fucking time eating his food until the crowd died down. And what's worse, the owner always sided with him, literally blaming me for not refilling water that was located outside the kitchen that the "celebrity" was conveniently standing next to when my job that night was mostly inside the kitchen prepping dishes.

honestly now she doesn’t put much of her life with her friends on youtube, she seems more relaxed and like a weight has lifted. when she was with the dolan twins and JC, she almost HAD to be the “newbie to LA” who should be spending all their money and making original videos. but now she hangs out with her friends in private and doesn’t put it all on youtube. she also seems to have got her stuff together now. she has her own apartment and goes to the gym/ has a good diet/ spends fine with her parents/ etc. she also has two days, which sound silly to say, but she’s given herself some responsibility. honestly i think by the fine you become as popular as she is, it’s hard to be the same “relatable” person as you were 3 years ago. she lived in her moms house and then in an apartment with her mom she got stalked and it wasn’t safe for her (she had money and that made her a target for crime and stuff). not here to be sucking up to her i just think that sometimes it’s hard to be the same as you were 3 years ago when she grew up 😊
And do you want her to not spend her well earned money just so you guys can feel good about yourselves
"we are literally working at a restaurant" i hated the way she said literally. smh
Yeah. I had to pause the video and stare at the wall for a sec. Like can you imagine being this baffled by the concept of normal people working normal jobs every day.

They were like "imagine working at a restaurant lmao"
I do think that Drew Gooden did a great job covering how RUclipsrs often get famous for being relatable and then they lose their relatability and become less likable with that. That being said, regardless of Ellen's behind the scenes personality, I watched her "Relatable" stand up special and it was hilarious because of how absurdly unrelatable it was.
You were on the Ellen train waaay before everyone else was.

I like your theory of "they sucked all along"
If that's what you do after getting a lot of money, then you're bad with money.
(I think it's kinda already going downhill with aesthetic culture kinda turning to flex and unrelatable culture with some creators) but overall how this is going to change.

they do get enough credit lol, do you see jennas and safiyas views? Idk bout Simply doe.
@@reecee2488 I mean that is what quality content was on RUclips when Jenna first started and lots of people still like that kind of content
There's also a huge difference between making content focused on relatability and making contents about your daily life.
Meg R i mean, jeffree was homeless at a certain point of his life and look where he is
TrulyTaekook he doesn’t make more money that them.
He also said that if he admitted to being rich, he'd be scared that it all will go away.
you literally forget how rich jenna actually is because of how humble of a person she is, and how her content stays the same.
micarah tewers is a great example of this. yes, most of us don't sew that much and yes, most of us don't act like her, but her content has just gotten better and better. she also still feels like a real person, and all of her videos about buying things don't seem to be rubbing it in your face. she really is one of my favorite creators, and one of the most genuine ones as well.

Also if I did make millions of dollars on social media or from whatever else, I would want to donate it to people in need, not as a “I want people to think that I am a good person,” but just because I genuinely don’t think that I would need that much money for my basic necessities.

actually Ryan Trahan did not have a Tesla at 16.

That’s complicated. Most people don’t do it consciously.

Jeffrey Star has earned money by knocking off his competition by making sick strategies against them lol
it’s really classy that you where constantly referring your audience to other content creators !!
When you try to be relatable you stop being relatable, being yourself and just living with it is enough.
He still wears worn out shirts with holes in them, drives an old ass jeep, etc.

i think also though it's important to remember that these people have been making videos over the course of several formative years and obviously your personality will change as you grow up like that's life. and blaming people for changing and growing up is extremely hurtful b/c its not really something you can control.
The only point I disagree with is that Jefree isn’t trying to be “relatable” when he’s eating Burger King, Taco Bell, etc. He just really really likes fast food
Megan Ealey I think she met that in comes off as relatable not that he’s trying to be
Megan Ealey 100% Jeffree has ALWAYS LOVED TACO BELL

@@user-np9lb1xh7k there not from actually poor people either, there from others who see being poor for a day as a trend too, so we're still not "making it their game"
I love Shane but he should rlly stop saying he’s poor.
@@JoHarryDaddee why? Haha 😂 Iove Shane too tho
Jo Daddee but he’s not especially now
Omfg your profile pic caught me off guard 😂
Robert Rodriguez i feel like he only says that around jeffree because he doesn’t have as much as jeffree does.
Yeah like he has sooo much money and him saying he’s poor?! Like damn tf am I?
girlie it seems like you've hit algorithm lottery
I second that
I saw that too. She was like "my last few videos haven't been getting as many views :/" and youtube was like "i gotchu" xD
Yup
Add PewDiePie to your list. He is down-to-earth. He's also living in a minimalistic lifestyle. He does not brag in his videos.
WAIT WHAT?! stan pewdiepie for clear skin 🧚🏼♂️
Minimalistic lifestyle? Have you seen the glamorous pictures by Marzia on her social media? What about their lavish vacations?
@@karoliinakettu1353 so is it bad they're furnishing their house and having vacations? Marzia's Instagram is none of pewdiepie's "content". He never even moves out of his usual setup lol.
The unholy trinity of relatability are Jenna, Joanna, Safyia, and Cristine
What?! I never said I was good a math!
ahahha yeah
Who’s joana?
@@snowleopard064 Joanna Cedia. She’s basically the funny, actually relatable version of Emma chamberlain. I’ll link her channel

My issue with Shane is that he hasn’t “grown” as a person. His personality still revolves around “oh look I’m ugly and disgusting and poor” which has been his shtick since 2016. I dunno, but his personality feels more like a character than somebody who wants to be taken seriously. It’s just boring now to watch him repeat the same gestures, faces, and jokes😐😐
thats why i dont watch him anymore...its just annoying
This has been apart of his shtick since he started posting to YT, so its been about 13 years now.
I think his poor childhood had an impact on him that being rich hasn't taken away or he at least acts like it hasn't?
Yeah it’s getting super annoying. I literally have to stop watching the video to process how weird it is that he has millions of dollars and is saying he is ugly when he looks perfectly fine
Yeah self-deprecating humor is hard to watch. Like please, Shane, love yourself even just a tiny bit.
