My kid goes to a Title I school, which means majority-poor. They all receive free dental check ups twice a year, which I think is a great program. Dentists actually come to the school and do it during the school day, so the parents don't have to take time off or find transportation. When problems are found, parents are also referred to assistance programs. Our state health department has a large oral health program because they've realized how it affects overall health. The students also all get free fluoride varnishes.

People also forget/ignore that not everyone grew up with parents who encouraged them to take care of their teeth- either due to neglectful/abusive parents, parents with mental health issues, not being able to afford dental care, or simply just not having the education on why it's so important. As a kid, I never visited a dentist once, and I didn't understand the importance of taking care of my oral health (combine that with mental health and sensory issues from a young age, and it isn't good). As a result, I've got pretty fucked up teeth- they aren't damaged beyond repair, but they definitely have some bad damage that could have been avoided had I say, grown up with the money to afford dental care, or with parents who had the time and were mentally well enough to help me. I'm sure I'm not the only one in a similar situation either?

I'm the same! My parents didn't brush their teeth and they never made me brush my teeth either, least of all took me to a dentist. I never gave it a thought! I didn't start brushing or flossing until I was 15. You can imagine I've got a lot of tooth decay. I finally got to go get my 50-ish cavities filled when I was 19, 7 years later I've not i had insurance or money for a dentist since. Several of my fillings have fallen out and lots of my teeth have chipped off! No good. I'm very good about brushing and flossing and I eat fairly healthy but sadly that's not enough at this point, the damage has been done and I need to be going to the dentist regularly but of course it's ridiculously expensive without insurance. I'm 26 and I've only just gotten a stable enough job and dental insurance so here's to the future! And you bet your nipple if I ever have kids they will be flossing and brushing religiously!!

Same here. My dad was always really good about his teeth, but both my parents and in turn myself, were all raised in poverty, so his teeth had to get pulled in his 60s or so, and looking back I'm fairly certain both myself and my mom had ADHD making it difficult for her to remember to brush her own teeth, let alone teach her child to, and in turn made it difficult for me to remember to do it more than once a week until probably my early teens, and even then it was only on school days that I could remember to do it. Add on top of that, that I don't think any of us ever flossed, I don't know if my parents realized the importance of it, and honestly even now I can only remember to do it when I feel something stuck between my teeth.

I don't know where you live, but I live in the US, and I definitely agree. It's appalling the way the disabled and elderly are treated in this country, some even dropped off and abandoned at Skid Row. This country won't allow you to grow old gracefully (unless you're upper middle class or higher with a lot of money). Unless you're rich, here, you can't afford growing old. It can be 40K a month needed to take care of old folks/those with special needs or conditions. They've made growing old in this country a fearful, humiliating thing for many.

Hearing aids are way too expensive and it's wild that they're not covered. My dad was so anxious about having to get hearing aids in his early 40s. Luckily he was able to afford the huge out of pocket cost (and pay that cost again every few years when they need replacing), which meant his bigger worry was how people would treat him at work because there can definitely be a stigma associated with hearing loss. And it makes me sad when I see people get annoyed with him for not being able to hear when he's due for an upgrade, or in situations where he can't wear them - like around any kind of water, including rain or sweat, which will destroy these expensive electronics. Also worth noting the ongoing expense of constantly replacing the batteries, which really adds up and can be a barrier for lower-income folks, even if the hearing aids themselves get covered.
When my grandparents entered nursing homes in their 90s, I discovered another way people who wear hearing aids get screwed over, which is that the staff would often either not put their hearing aids in for them or arguably worse, put them in with dead batteries so they were effectively giving someone who already couldn't hear well really expensive ear plugs to wear all day. Our family had to keep reminding them the hearing aids aren't optional, they're essential. I really feel for all the people in nursing homes who don't have family available to advocate for their care.

Same here in the Netherlands. We have a mandatory basic health insurance that every resident needs to have, which includes free regular checkups and basic stuff like cleanings/fillings/x-rays for under 18 for free and over 18 capped at I think 150 euros.
Braces and things like dentures are not part of that basic income, but there are additional insurance "packages" that you can pay for which does include things like certain amounts of coverage for those expenses. My parents had enough money to get the orthodontics 100% insured, which was good because both my little brother and I needed braces and follow-up orthodontic treatments for at least 5 years. I now have a metal wire glued at the back of my front upper and lower teeth to prevent them from shifting. The only expense I have now is some random cleaning once every two years because I am lazy and do not use tooth picks, and the occasional once every five years 30 euros to dab some extra glue on the wires to keep them in place.
The percentages of cost that the insurance covers is I think is around 50%, 75% and 100%, with every company that sells these additional insurance packages having a slightly different coverage.

A lot of dental students come from families who are dentists so they grow up extremely privileged. We had to do programming for our classes that had activities where students role-played living as a patient on social services just so they could learn the barriers that a lot of dental patients experience when they're on Medicaid to empathize better with their patients.

Hey! Newly graduated dentist here. Really enjoyed this video and you made so many great points. Something I like to suggest for those who feel like going to the dentist and taking care of their teeth is too expensive is to try and find a dental school in your state/area to be seen. Dental schools are often significantly less expensive than going to a private office, they tend to accept Medicaid, and the quality of work you receive is still very very good if not better because everything is double triple checked by supervising dentists. I know not everyone lives near a dental school, but it’s still a really good option that a lot of people maybe don’t think about off the bat. It’s obviously not ideal since treatment takes longer, but it’s always something I try to bring up now to people who tell me they can’t afford to take care of their oral health.

I grew up poor and my teeth were always bad. My family is very unlucky with teeth and they're genetically very problematic. My tooth even fell out / broke off at the root a few weeks ago, and I'm only 21. My teeth are crooked. It's what I got genetically. They're crooked, and they hurt my lip and poke into it. I also have an overbite due to my jaw or something, and it causes me an awful amount of pain and headqches, as well as inability to open my mouth wide without cracking my jaw, and problems biting into anything, as well as making me very self conscious. I really wanted to have braces all my life, I begged my dad (they were divorced when I was about 3 and then they were distant, so he did have money, but he refused to spend it on me) and he said it doesn't matter that they're crooked, even though it causes me pain. Braces used to be partially covered by universal healthcare insurance in my country, but as soon as I turned 18 and gained the ability to make my own decisions, they stopped being covered by insurance, not even partially like before, and they're incredibly expensive. So even though I gained the ability to decide to get them, I don't have the finances for it. I got mocked for my teeth by other peers, always commented on how weird they are, that I have a weird fang and lower teeth, ever since I was a child. So now I avoid speaking or smiling when I'm with people and it makes me sad, but there's nothing I can do with the money I have, as I'm disabled and working is hard for me. My mom took me to the dentist like 5 times total, until I was 18 and we had to split. My teeth hurt, my gums are receding and the roots of my teeth show through my gums, a lot of my teeth is wobbly and kinda loose and I'm very scared of losing more teeth. I have a lot of cavities as well. Sh*t genetics. But anything that could help me is just sooo expensive. Insurance won't help here, because teeth is the biggest business in the medical industry, as literally every person alive needs dental care, unlike other specialists, where you only go with certain problems that aren't as common as dental problems. If that makes sense. If they covered it, even partially, they would lose so much money, because people need to get their teeth fixed for both health, pain, and cosmetics - which affects your social life, your work and if you're hired and respected, your love life and especially your self esteem. Cosmetic problems can affect your ability to live a normal life. For example a girl I know from group therapy has a genetic contidions where you don't grow any hair at all, and she needs to wear a wig so she doesn't get stared at or discriminated. But our insurance system considers that only a cosmetic problem, saying it won't affect your life! It absolutely affects all areas of your life, your mental health and self esteem leads to even physical problems. Just like teeth! Cosmetic problems can be extremely difficult! It's not about vanity, it's about wanting to be respected just like everyone else.

I’m below the poverty line, had an eating disorder, and because of this I had to have 5 adult teeth extracted by age 24 because they were too far gone. I have about 5 more that are in pain and need root canals or to be pulled. The infection can be dangerous, so if you can’t afford thousands of dollars of work…Medicaid will cover to pull them. It’s so sad because I grew up with caring parents who took me to the dentist and paid for braces, and loved my smile. It makes me feel gross and irresponsible that I can’t address my teeth as an adult. I scrambled together a little over a grand to fix one in the front, but I’m sure I’ll have partial dentures before 30. It’s an awful feeling. Having to find a casual way to tell someone you’re dating that you have like 4 molars total is not fun. The unpopular opinion from a Russian girl: American whitening looks extremely unnatural, creepy and uncanny. As an artist, I can easily recognise the white teeth of a puppy, when the pure white color of it still has some natural slight warm yellow greyish shade, while American teeth whitening has a colder shade which reminds me of a toilet cold blue white shade, which creates this uncanny fake creepy effect. Also, naturaly white teeth aren`t supposed to be so white that it looks like they are almost glowing. I understand why these people want to fix their teeth, but dentists make these teeth look too perfect, ruining the natural healthy effect of slight imperfections (dunno how to explain it), and this makes influencers look like they have long horse teeth or smth
I wonder if Tiffany has veneers since her teeth look gorgeous, they are naturally white with subtle greyish tone ( still gorgeous I am just an artist, sorry).

Thank you for this expose. It is helpful to learn that teeth that may not be pretty might be healthy and pretty teeth might not be healthy. Dental work is a daunting prospect for health. Some folks in the chronically ill lyme disease community people get a lot of dental work to try to heal; there are many stories of how many dentists butcher the patients' mouth. All traditional dentists know how to do is extractions , drill and fill and without any clue about testing the oral microbiome for pathogens. If there is an overgrowth of pathogens in that person and the mouth they make healing difficult or can compromise the patient after surgery. Dentists don't know how to effectively clean root canals after extraction and so people get infected after surgery.. a nightmare.

I work in an area that has RAM services. People not only drive for hours to get there, they line up for it super early to try and get in. So much so that they end up doing a “lottery system” for dental work and I’ve even heard if you do “win” that lottery, you can only have a section of your mouth worked on at a time due to time constraints and wanting to help more people.

Anyways, I am going back to school for Dental Hygiene at my local community college and I am currently taking Sociology for a prerequisite, and I shared this video in our forum about the chapter about health and inequality. I hope as a dental hygienist I can help others with their health and make people feel secure about the look of their teeth. I hope I can help change things in the system instead of perpetuate problems. I am pursuing this career because I love helping others and I hope I can do this in the fairest way possible. Dental health has been a big part of my life as well, I am going to need periodontics surgery in March which will cost a lot out of pocket in addition to paying for school, which thankfully is quite affordable at my community college... I am not taking out any loans. Thanks for making such high quality video about important topics. - Mary

BUT when I did go to the dentist as a teenager, I had insurance for low incomes & instead of giving me a root canal or anything else, your only option is to pull your teeth. There is no other option because you’re poor so now I have two teeth missing because I had no idea you could do anything else back then. (Edit: I was on WellCare’s Medicaid! I’m still on it but now I’m on another better dental insurance as well- BUT I still have to put my dental bills on a credit card with my mom’s help to afford root canal’s & crown’s. The closest place I could find that accepted dental care was an hour away.)

I wish the material available to DIY it like I can pop my own zits and color my own hair, tattoo my own body, and pierce my own ears. 😆🤣 but like I can't afford to fix the teeth my parents neglect ruined.

I had them taken off when I was 18 because I couldn't keep paying for them and most of the serious dental issues were already fixed and adressed. My retainer broke after the first few weeks of getting them and i have a big gap in the front of my teeth where it broke. I had to get the braces because i had huge, problematic gaps and overcrowding and my teeth were too large for my mouth, i had many removed as well before getting braces. It was 5 years of a lot of issues and I still have issues from it but now i can't afford the problems it still causes me

I agree with everything in this video with one caveat. I do think that Invisalign/braces should be seen as essential health care too. My teeth being crooked/my misaligned bite have been a major contributor to my dental issues: my teeth have chipped away to a horrifying degree over the years because of the way my teeth connect, I have gotten cavities from crowding preventing adequate flossing, and even my breathing has been affected because my teeth prevent proper tongue placement in the mouth which makes it harder to breathe through my nose. I live in Canada and I was lucky enough to get dental checkups every year and had fillings/removals done when I needed them because my mom has insurance, but she also was a single parent and worked at Walmart so straightening my teeth was out of the question and now I’m paying for it as an adult. I had a tooth pulled as a preteen because it was so out of alignment that it was damaging my jaw, and insurance covered the removal but not the straightening to save it, and now my teeth on that side of my mouth have migrated and are all over the place which means when I can afford to straighten them it will be more expensive, costly, and harder to maintain for the rest of my life :(

Got complimented on my smile by teachers as a kid, I'd just smile at everyone when I had nothing to say. There was some pressure for me to get braces but I actively refused, saying "My body, my choice" when I was 12. Parents were glad, since we didn't have much money anyways. Never wanted any to not lose my unique smile and risk looking "fake". Plus I just didn't want the looks or hassle of them like a typical teen. Thought some kids looked so different after braces.
10 years later I don't regret a thing, did get one tooth pulled to avoid crowding but that's it. I've grown into my teeth and it looks super natural on me imo.

i grew up poor as hell. my parents didnt enforce me actually brushing my teeth or flossing so i didnt start doing that regularly until i was in middle school or high school, when i was self aware enough to know i needed to be doing that and had the discipline to hold myself to it. that's part of why even at 23 i still struggle really badly with my dental care. if im going somewhere that day, i can almost always get myself to brush my teeth in the morning and sometimes floss too. but if im not, i just feel like i cant. part of this is having major depressive disorder, another part is me having fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. the desire is there, but the energy isnt. i know i need to just stop making excuses but god damn it genuinely is that hard for me to bring myself to do it. i've been very lucky to have an incredibly kind dentist, orthodontist, and endodontist (i had to get my first root canal this past year) who are super understanding and nonjudgemental, but my dentist is retiring here soon and im really worried about who im gonna end up seeing after that. i've had the same dentist my entire life. the older i get, the more aware i become of the fact that you only get one set of teeth and damage cant just be reversed easily, if at all. i gotta start taking care of myself more *sigh*

Thank you for making this video! It is a very complex and important issue. I've personally went through a lot of these things you've spoke of. Growing up, my parents were of working class, and we were (and still are) part of a marginalized community.. My sister and I didn't get to go to the dentist much growing up, as our parents rarely had dental insurance. And to add to the issues, I struggled with eating disorders since I was 12 (and am now in my 30s), which made my teeth even more sensitive and painful.. As an adult, I worked many jobs that had no health insurance (let alone dental or vision)..and even once I did, the system is so flawed and expensive. I'm still dealing with a ton of pain and discomfort, as well as the fear of being judged by others. And you're correct, some dentists can absolutely cause anxiety for patients, as some treat certain patients as if they're "less than" or they act as if everyone who has serious dental issues must be lazy/stupid/trashy/on drugs/etc.. I've had experiences that caused me great anxiety, when a dentist treated me like a piece of trash, because of some of the issues I've had.
Dental care IS healthcare! It is absolutely essential, and these most basic of health services should be available to all!
And also, as someone who lives in a conservative state (Ohio), there is absolutely prejudices and hurtful behaviors from the dentists here, *especially if you're "poor" and/or on Medicaid/Medicare* (if you can even find one in your area who accepts Medicaid).
Thank you so much for this!

I really try to maintain myself and take care of my teeth but it's just really hard and because I don't have any "visible" or "rational" reason for NOT going to the dentist (for example a financial reason), people just assume I'm dirty and disgusting and that I don't care about how I look at all and it really does in turn affect my mental health because I'm constantly thinking about people judging me .....ya know, it's a struggle and I am glad people are starting to talk more about the ugly "disgusting" parts of having mental health problems so that we can all at least find some comfort in not being alone

I live in Sweden and here dental is free up until you are 21, most kids get bracers for free here. I had bracers and dental surgery for free until I was 21. Most adults don't go to a dentist as often since it's quite expensive but during the later years some things have changed to make dental be part of healthcare so that that doing check-ups costs less and there is a roof of how much dental can cost you (so if you need to get crowns or bigger things it's still a capped expense). But it's still not free as our other healthcare is (well atleast almost, our healthcare comes with a small fee, so it's not free-free, it's at a very low cost, like $20).

Ah this is great. makes me even more sad to be born in a crappy country. I'm 18. I've had problems with my teeth since middle school (my baby teeth didn't fall and new teeth grow in weird places and positions) and mom didn't take me to a dentist/ orthodontist (we don't really have any good ones where I live.. orthodontics is something new to us so.. anyways) I've hated my smile ever since.. when I became a little older (high school) I told them I had to fix my teeth.. dentist told me that I should've come earlier and that made me even more depressed.. that was about two years ago. We had to postpone it because of financial problems.. here I am worried that it gets worse... and many who had braces in my city warned me to do it here and told I should travel to the capital if I don't want to mess my teeth up. My parents promised to do it this year so I don't know..
But I had to think about evey single time I smiled for the past 6 years of my life.. never felt good about smiling makes me self-conscious and nervous.
Really no one deserves this... Glad not all kids have to go through something similar but definitely getting something like braces shouldn't be that expensive...

This is such a sensitive topic for me. I haven’t had dental care literally in years, and I need restorative work done. I’d love to have an “imperfect” smile at this point because it would be 100% better than the condition my teeth are in now. I finally have health insurance again and I’m dreading going to the dentist. Some wouldn’t understand, but there’s so much shame and embarrassment involved when your teeth get bad. Unfortunately not even all the people working in dentistry know that..I still remember how I felt over a little joke that a tech made years ago during an appointment.
So I’ll be looking for a provider that takes my Medicaid and trying to get past the anxiety and knowing that it will take a small fortune to fix my teeth.

I work in dentistry as an assistant, I always tell my patients that let themselves go from depression or just general life the same thing
"You're here now and that's what matters"
Please please please do yourself a favor and don't let your dental anxiety be the reason to not go. Make the appointment, notify the lady on the phone, the front desk upon check in, and the assistant or hygienist about your anxiety they will accommodate you, and if they don't it's not a good office. Some dentist prescribe a days worth of anxiety meds to help you get through your visit.
Always speak up, pain is never normal during a dental visit, if you feel pain TELL YOUR DENTIST, raise your left hand first to get their attention.
And i am just trying to place perspective here, and I don't want to scare you, but I've seen so many patients that "dissappear" for a 2 or more year period of time that needed like 2 or more crowns and root canals and a few fillings, that turned into full mouth extractions and dentures.
Don't let embarrassment and anxiety be the reason you need dentures at a "too young" age. (Too young is usually under 65-70y.o)
Good luck! I hope this helps ❤

I'm very lucky because I never got a cavity until last year (it got very deep because I didn't notice), but I only found out I have genetically good teeth like at 19/20. I didn't know it was a thing. I also didn't know that teeth whitening can increase the risk of cavities and such and that naturally darker teeth are usually less prone to problems. At the risk of sounding “woke”, it seems a lot of the systems are made to maintain class structures. Many people don’t want equality. They want more for them and less for you. The dental associations and schools are intentionally impossible for most people to pay for. It makes it so you have to be fairly rich to even become a dentist. Then, once you graduate, if you have even some debt, which is likely even if your parents are dentists, guess where most of the dentists and orthodontists go? To the big cities like LA, where they can get their money back. Hence a boatload of dentists in rich cities, and virtually none in poorer places. It’s a classic vicious cycle of late stage capitalism.
