as someone who grew up creating powerpoints, myspace pages, videos, etc, watching this helped me realize that storyline isn't that far out of things I am already used to. thank you so much!
I just got accepted for an apprenticeship using Articulate Storyboard, alongside studying in college. This is the first video on Storyline I have watched and you have done an amazing job showing the basics. I look forward to watching more of your videos.
Really enjoyed following this tutorial! I have never used Articulate before and found this easy to follow along. I have experience with Premiere, Photoshop, and Powerpoint though so a lot of this language translated. I did have trouble previewing some of the triggers, it would not preview for some reason. But when I previewed the whole project they worked and when I published it they worked fine. Might be a glitch with storyline or my computer. Thanks for sharing this tutorial!

Thank you so much. I am completely new, and at one stage I couldn't figure why I was receiving an error that didn't allow me to preview the scene. Well, problem was that I was selecting the settings button next to the device icons rather than the Preview button within "Publish options" in the menu.
Hey Devlin, thank you for such an amazing series on articulate. If possible, can you make a video on an extensive list of mistakes and lessons learned in this creative process of designing courses? if there is already such a video, please drop the link threaded to my comment. Thank you so much for all the effort
Devlin, This tutorial was great! I love the parallels between PowerPoint and Storyline. Thank you for the great tips - I never knew that to highlight an entire text box you can press escape, and the copy/paste/replace is a GAME CHANGER! I am getting ready to get my free trial of Articulate and am going to begin story boarding an idea I had. I was wondering if it is okay if I borrow your pirate idea for an elementary music project I'm thinking of doing. I'd like to incorporate it into my classroom as well as eventually into my portfolio! Students will have to figure out what note they are reading on the staff, and that will contain the key needed to unlock the chest. :)
Of course! Borrow away :D. And I'm glad you've been enjoying the content. Also, if you're looking to transition into corporate ID, it will be good to have some portfolio projects for adults :)
@@DevlinPeckYT Good to know! I definitely plan on working on that - getting into corporate ID is the ultimate move! For my first Articulate project, I thought I'd play it safe and work with content I know really well. :) Thanks again for your help!

I am trying to get a ding to sound when Blackbeard is clicked, but am not doing the triggers/variables correctly. I will look through your tutorials, thank you!
For sure! I wanted to do this but we didn’t have the time. An easy way to do this would be to add the audio to the beginning of the Blackbeard slide. Then when you click Blackbeard, it immediately brings you to the Blackbeard slide and the audio plays 😃

The SL Beginner's Guide advises using the 16:9 aspect ratio. Your video above here recommends 1280x720. I'm curious about why you suggest the wider screen and if you discourage using the 16:9? Thank you. :)
Hi Jill! Thanks for commenting on this. 1280x720 is a 16:9 aspect ratio, and this is what we recommend using. You could also go 1920x1080 for a higher resolution project, or you could size down to 720px width for lower resolution. Let me know if you have any other questions about this :D
Hey Devlin. As always, very informative and practical tutorial. I can't thank you enough,❤️ I would love to know the future of ID and where is the overall e-learning industry moving towards in the next 3-5 years and how do we instructional designers keep ourselves ahead of the learning curve. Do you have any plans to come up with a video/webinar on above topics?
Hi Akshay, thanks for asking! If there's anything that I've learned over the last several years in this industry, it's that it's very slow to change. SCORM-based eLearning has been dominating the market and it has seemed to only move further in that direction. So learning tools like Storyline should be safe for the foreseeable future. If / when I see changes in the market, though, I will be sure to post videos about them :)
Hey Devlin. It was super fun and practical session. I am a newbie in the field. I have binge-watched the 'Become ID' playlist on your channel. Hello Devlin! I was wondering about the deadline of the "storyline lab" and have some questions about that: when we can start it, I mean can we have this course any time from now? and ... in your lab you will learn us about making course and uploading course on the LMS or only we will learn about some features of storyline which are helpful in landing job? and is it possible to have access to you 1 to 1 if we have questions or access to coaches in this storyline lab for long time or we should ask all our questions during in limited time of workshop that you and your colleges already have determined? Thanks so much!
Hi and thanks for asking! The Storyline Project Lab is self-paced with community support. So you have access to the content immediately and can work through it at your own pace. That being said, you are also invited to join the private Slack channel, a project team, and pair with a lab partner. You can ask for help and support in all of these spaces, and I will stay involved with the community (although I do not promise 1-on-1s or personalized feedback in this program like I do in the bootcamp program, which involves much more 1-on-1 support but is much more of an investment). Regarding the content, the main focus is on using Articulate Storyline to its full potential. However, we also cover publishing and reporting to the LMS, browser tools / add-ons that are helpful, common requests from clients, how to minimize rework, etc. So we will make sure that you have the support and content that you need to develop in Storyline at a pro level if you decide to enroll in the project lab :). Let me know if you have any other questions!
Hi Devlin, What's your view on using the "Convert to Freeform Slide" option for doing interactions like drag and drop. It was interesting that you built your drag and drop without using that and I wondered if that is because - much the same as you have said with Storyline inbuilt states - you've had bad experiences with freeform drag and drops or any of the other freeform options such as Pick One, Pick Many, Text Entry, Hotspot or Shortcut Key and because of that you now prefer to build from scratch yourself.
Hi Carlton! For quick things like this (and for much more complex things), I use custom triggers. If the drag-and-drop is fairly straightforward and the freeform interaction builder will save me time, then I go with that. No issues with the drag-and-drop builder that I've found though if you're using it for something it's intended to do :D. Also good to go with that one if you want to grade / report to the LMS.

Hi Sara! Good question. The word I actually use is "aspiring," it basically just means people who are currently trying to become instructional designers or eLearning developers. I see how it would sound like I'm saying "inspiring" though :D. It's up to you if you use the word aspiring or not in your headline...if you're doing ID work, then you may not need to use that qualifier. And the project lab is on sale until December 1st :). Let me know if you have any other questions about that.

Devlin, in order to add an image and paste on another image like you did with the treasure chest, do you need to cut the image out of its original background, so that it blends with the Storyline background? I was following the tutorial and found that when you paste an image on the slide, it does not look blended. I had some old images cut out from their original background with Photoshop and they worked just fine.
Hmmmm….as long as it is a .png with a transparent background, you should be able to bring it in without any white background appearing. You could use remove.bg website to quickly remove backgrounds from images, too.
Hi Devlin! I just started learning more about Instructional Design and just now watching this video some 5 months later! How do you download the treasure chest assets?

@@DevlinPeckYT Hi Devlin. I have one more question about installing Storyline to mac OS. Is 512GB hard disk enough to install Parallel and window 10 for Storyline? would you suggest to buy the Intel based macbook over M1 chip because it seems like parallel work better with Intel based Mac? Thanks.
@@ckernest HI! 512 GB will definitely be enough. And that's a tough call. The M1 chips are sooo much better than anything else out there, but it is a bit easier to use Storyline with the Intel Macs. It seems like people with 16 GB of RAM on their M1 Macs are having decent experiences with Storyline, so I would probably go with that.
Good question, Luis. Rise is different than Storyline. You'll need to download Articulate 360 and then install Storyline 360 from that desktop app. Rise is much more simple and browser-based. You can learn more about the difference between the two in this video: ruclips.net/video/mAEPu2utG98/видео.html
Good question. But no, you will not be. The programs are completely different. Rise is a good one to learn but you should definitely get comfortable with Storyline as well 😃
Why ‘don’t rely on the built in states’? I’ve been using Storyline 2 for a decade and never had a problem with built in states, is this a bug they’ve introduced in 360?
Hey there! I've had some issues with the built in states in the past, but I personally enjoy the option to customize. If the built in states work for you, and you haven't noticed any issues, that's great to hear!

Seems a lot like Macromedia’s Director and PowerPoint mixed together.
Hi, is it possible to generate Scorm from this project? Thank you! T.
Hi! Yes, it sure is 😃. You can publish it for an LMS by adjusting the publish settings (instead of publishing it for the web).
Articulate storyline 360 the same as articulate rise 360? Started the free trial and can only find rise and looks different than what you showed.
HI Devlin -- I have a Mac. If I learn Rise 360, will I be prepared to use Storyline 360 as well?
Good question. But no, you will not be. The programs are completely different. Rise is a good one to learn but you should definitely get comfortable with Storyline as well 😃
@@DevlinPeckYT Thanks for the quick reply! So, I should install Parallels and Windows on my Mac before I download Articulate 360, is that right?
@@hollywoodsspiesbook3496 Yes, that's right :)
I cant insert anything on storyline.
Hello Delvin can you share this software with men Google Drive... I have been following you and I am challenged to be a better Instructional designer
Hi Emeka! You can get an Articulate 360 trial from Articulate’s website 😃
Thank you
Devlin, thanks for this, but your swirling mouse/pointer really makes it hard to concentrate. Just helpful hint.
So Articulate is $1400 PER YEAR? So every year you have to renew at the same price?
Hi Rida! I believe it's $1100 / yr for individuals and you get a 50% discount if you're an educator. There's also a free trial that you can use to get started.
i dont understand bro why its used for
Captivate is working on a big update? Captivate is the second worst software I have ever used. A big update is not enough to even get it up to "usable".
to long
Thanks for watching anyway! This one might give you a shorter introduction if you're looking for some key highlights:
