We know that instructional design is more than eLearning development, but what else does it entail?
We can learn the models and theories like ADDIE, SAM, and Gagne's Events, but there's more to it than that...right?
Right! While there’s definitely a lot involved in regards to the learning science, multiple models of design, the types of evaluation you might use, and various concepts and principles, it doesn’t have to be complicated.
If you’re looking for a clear outline or overview of what instructional design entails and how you can sift through all the theories that have built this field into what it is, be sure to watch the video!

Devlin, you're a saint! Final round of interviews for a Curriculum Manager/Course Leader position (a lot of ID) and your videos have legitimately been my primary starting point for all preparation.
Happy to help, Nick! Good luck with the interviews and let us know how it goes :D
@@DevlinPeckYTRealized I never came back to this comment...I got the position! I recently completed your ID survey with info about this position for your report. Still referencing your videos all the time!
@@nickbyrd1027 That is so great.
I was a classroom teacher for grades 6-12 for 10 years and have been doing private tutoring for the last 4 years. I really want to take my current skills and turn them into something that is still meaningful but gives me a better work-life balance with financial goals in mind. This video showed me that I am in my wheelhouse to learn and become an ID. thank you Devlin! I want to do your bootcamp but I just can't swing the financials right now, so it is really great that you have so many videos available at no cost.
No worries! That's what the free resources are for :) Glad they're helping you make the transition.
Thank you so much, Devlin. Your videos are truly excellent. I constantly use them to learn new concepts and to remind myself of things I may lose focus on over time. I'm also grateful to your team members and collaborators for their contributions. I have 9 years of experience teaching engineering graduates and over 5 years of experience in instructional design, and I am currently based in the UK.
Glad to hear you're enjoying the channel! Thanks for watching :D
My comment is the same as everyone else's but THANK YOU. This pulled together all my previous learning so well, and your extra comments about the real use of the models was SO HELPFUL.
That's awesome, I'm glad it helped! Thanks for watching :D
I was a little confused with the "Cognitivism" part because I thought the ">" sign meant greater than, rather than a flow of sequences.
After looking over it again, it made MUCH more sense. Thank you for all you do!
Ah, so sorry! I should have made that more clearly an error. Good feedback and I’ll try to add some hyphens before my greater than signs in the future 😃
Your instructional design videos are simply amazing! I'm blown away by your ability to explain complex concepts with such clarity and depth. As someone who's been a trainer for the past three years, I'm transitioning into instructional design myself, and your videos have been an absolute godsend. Your diverse range of examples really drives home the lessons and inspires me to think creatively about my own training methods. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise and passion with the world! Looking forward to learning more from you!
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you're finding the content useful :)
Thanks Devlin, this is SO helpful! Some of my grad classes do not spend a lot of time on the theories, but you are expected to apply them to projects. Your review is a huge help for me in my ID program!
Super helpful - thanks so much. Leaving classroom teaching and hoping to pivot and this was exactly what I needed to see where my skillset overlaps.
I've been watching this over and over for the past 5 days and already have so much in my brain! This is so comprehensive but not so much that it's cramming my brain. Thank you sooooo much!!!!
It's always nice to hear that you're not experiencing cognitive overload haha :D Thanks for watching!
This video was so helpful. I was feeling overwhelmed with all the models and where they fit into the bigger picture, but this video really broke it down well. Your explanations and examples are so clear. Can't wait for your book!
Thanks so much, Jessie! Glad you enjoyed it :D
Taking an introduction design class as part of my master’s. This is such a great resource! Thank you ❤
You are so welcome! Good luck with your MA!
this is so helpful! I needed something like that that put all the theories and models in one place and made it easy to understand. Thank you!
You're welcome! So glad that it helped :D
Man I'm just so grateful, this video is a master piece
Amazing content and delivery - thank you SO much!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for your videos; I have learned so much from them. One quick clarification, though. When talking about rewards and punishments, in terms of behaviorism, you are actually talking about operant conditioning (Skinner and Thorndike are the major contributor's to this theory).
Great one! 👏👏 Please continue!
Thanks Cyril! Another theory vid coming next Thursday 😃
Just getting into this and discovered your videos, which have been fantastic and a great help so far! Thank you!
Great to hear they're helpful! Thanks for watching :)
I like the idea of beginning a project with Kirkpatrick's evaluations in mind.
you're a superstar!!!!! Thanks heaps.
I appreciate Devlin Pecks videos so much. I am just beginning a masters programme in ID and these videos have really helped me understand the various concepts. The masterclass is truly a master class.
What I'd like though is if you could go through the entire process of ID using 1specific example in a corporate setting so from say analysis to evaluation
Thanks! I'm glad this was valuable for you :D And great idea, this article might help you piece things together on your own projects:

@DevlinPeckYT thank you. This is awesome. Wow I can't believe I received an instant reply. You're awesome
I really like the rigor applied to the Objectives. If one cannot measure, one cannot manage (paraphrase roughly from former head of Intel, Andrew Grove). Assessment will out.
Very informative, detailed and helpful
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Devlin. Can you recommend a book with worksheets to practice writing objectives?
Thanks for this explanation, I am trying to find the right career for me. I appreciate
Best of luck!
I'm just starting in ID and thanks to your videos and knowledge I just got selected for an internship where there was a lot of competition to get in from younger and with formal training candidates but I got it... Thank you very much.
Where can I apply for the ID project Lab? and for the mailing list...
Hey, thanks for asking! And huge congrats on securing that internship. You can learn more about the project lab here: www.devlinpeck.com/id-project-lab
I failed my first lxd and Ed objective assessment, so I here to help study more.
Do you ever use UBD for creating curricula? (UBD is Understanding by Design) it's about creating units with a backward design? It has 3 phases. First phase, we figure out the results we want to achieve for the unit; the 2nd phase is creating the assessments for it and 3rd phase is the activities/games/worksheets that will support getting to the end result. It's not a program; it's more of a framework on how to create curriculum units. Do you have any opinions on how it relates to today's field as ID?
Great intro and synthesis of some very complicated concepts. Question: So much of Design is framed in terms of defining a problem or behavior. What if there IS no problem or behavior to change? Compliance, New Hire orientation, regulatory and other types of training are just information dumps and memorization for learners. There’s a need, perhaps, but nothing that’s really corrective.
Good question, there are definitely a ton of info dumps out there! Trainings like that could be a cool opportunity to address and design for cognitive load. Thanks for watching!
Do you do one on one consultations?
I dp, please would like to know if you do a one-on-one training on Id
Do you need prior multimedia design experience to obtain a Master's degree in ID & technology? My Bachelor's was in business and marketing.
Nope! Plenty of people transition into ID from different fields. Thanks for watching :)
❤❤
Thanks for watching!
Wondering how much was the role of chat GPT in this video?🙃
Haha didn’t actually use it for this! It has been helping me come up with questions for my shorts though 😃
