One of the biggest gaps that I have seen when reviewing portfolios is describing exactly what role the person played in the project and what tools they used. Did they just develop the material? Did they do the analysis? Did they write anything? What is their process? Did they work with other vendors, etc. I am also mystified when interviewing people and they cannot describe their design and development process except for throwing out L&D buzzwords. Basically when someone wants to hire you, they need to know what you can do and how you do it. My advice from the hiring trenches :)
Thank you so much for sharing!!! Yes, discussing your role and responsibilities in a write-up is just as important as the deliverable itself. And that definitely sounds like a red flag if people are not able to talk through the projects on their own portfolios.
I’d like to ask, as a brand new person to ID (this sounds silly) but I started a very basic storyline on “how to make a PB&J” and would love any tips, and tricks to get the full storyline experience. I’m 4 days old to this career path.
@@unknownspecimen9725 Welcome! If the goal is to learn Storyline then the content may not be super important at the moment. I would suggest trying to recreate interactions that you see online and build any projects you’re passionate about 😃
This is great content that I wish I'd had 20 years ago! When I started as an ID in 2003, eLearning was in its infancy, portfolios weren't a "thing," and no one did videos like this (lol, if I'd thought about it, maybe I would have taken the initiative myself, but back then the audience was pretty small). I ran a successful L&D consulting biz for 15 years but stopped doing eLearning 5-6 years ago to focus on VILT, blended, facilitation & overall project management. After watching your video, I feel like I'm way behind and have to do a lot of work to be considered viable again. Although I'm absolutely not looking forward to doing all this work for no pay, I greatly appreciate the pointers and insights!
Haha, wow! Yeah, it was a different space for the content even 5 years ago when I got started. I'm glad that this content can help a bit, and I know it can be overwhelming diving back into reskilling. It can be a lot of fun, though! For me, finding an inspiring project to work towards makes all of the troubleshooting and skill-building kind of fun. And you get to use your creativity to bring something good to life (and then it helps you land work...win win win!) It does take a bit of time though so I know that can be frustrating.
This has given me so much direction already! Portfolios seem tricky to start with just because you're not sure of what kind of projects need to go in there, but this video right here is the answer to all questions. Thank you for sharing such wonderful advice with us, Devlin!
You're so welcome! I'm really glad that I was able to bring this one live, because it's definitely something that holds people back. Happy to hear that it helped :)
Well this was perfectly timed. Spent days recently thinking about this getting nowhere, this has really given my thought process direction. SO HELPFUL. Is there an active community where people discuss these ideas/learning together? I haven't seen any active ones. Wish I could afford the bootcamp but it isn't in the cards for now. That interactivity and community helps so much when learning new things and needing feedback. I think I have a decent idea finally (took ages to get there) and need to review some of your videos so I can start to plan out a project more solidly. Thanks for your continued help!
Well this is definitely timely for me as I try to decide on my flagship project idea. The more I study instructional design, the more I see overlaps with other areas. For example, you talk about identifying your client (or potential client) and this closely ties to the basics of audience analysis but also the marketing tool of creating customer personas. Perhaps even the UI/UX process as well? I think I have too many ideas right now and a few I had already started some work on during my Storyline practice. Decisions!

Good questions, Norbert. You may find success just showing visual mockups instead of the final product, but you will want to exhibit eLearning development skills somewhere in your portfolio if you don't do so here. And it can make a bigger impact if people can experience the project for themselves (even if it's just a couple of questions...such as a prototype instead of the full experience). And I would suggest getting as much feedback as you can on your portfolio. You will know it's good enough when you start getting more positive feedback and you see an impact either on the job market or in the number of leads who reach out to you with client work and comment on your portfolio :D
