Appreciate the videos! I’m not buying a diesel because I don’t tow enough to justify the extra cost, and until the emissions issues are done away with. Your videos on the 6.6 and 7.3 is exactly what I’m try to decide between!

As someone who has had both trucks mind you they where half ton trucks they Chevrolet is 10 times better in my opinion because they ride and handle way better than ford and i personally think they tow better as well. Love the video look forward to more on these trucks. Side note a diesel isnt worth buying unless you plan on towing all the time much like a hot shot driver. Just cant justify paying 10,000 more for a diesel engine and paying over a dollar more per gallon to fill up, let alone the maintenance costs like you mentioned before.

It makes complete sense that the Chevy is the better riding truck. WIth the IFS in the Chevy, you not getting as stout of a front suspension as the Ford or as robust, which if you use one to plow snow that is a big factor. However, for tighter turning radius or comfort of ride, the Chevy/GMC is going to ride nicer and others I know who have owned both, say the same as you in their observations.

The problem with diesel owners is they have to be validated on their purchase. They spent insane amounts of money on diesels. Like you said most don’t tow over 10,000 so why do we need to spend the extra money ?

Thanks for the good honest real comparison. I have a 2020 F250/7.3/3.55 CC SB 4x4. 38k and no noteworthy issues. I tow a 7600 lb travel trailer mostly around where I live, GA and the southeast. I’ve pulled to Denver once and to San Diego via I-40 down to I-8 once. Both trips averaged 9.5 mpg for the entire distance out and back. I used 87 octane mostly but premium when I got to the mountains, it did make a difference. Like you, I tend to keep my ascent and descent on steep grades slower. It’s good to hear that confirmation from a pro driver. I haven’t had any issues yet except what I would call an unusual buzz/vibration when the truck downshifted to 3rd coming down the last steep descent on I-8 into San Diego. Speed was about 55mph if I remember. Never had it happen before and only a time or two since, in 3rd only while engine braking.

I really appreciate your insight and thoroughness on this test. I have always tried to keep an open mind when I came to my tow vehicle for our RV. When we started RV travel we had 1 child and my first tow vehicle was a lifted 2 door Tahoe, what an idiot I was. We then gravitated toward a 3/4 ton Suburban as the family grew and loved it. As our RV outgrew the capabilities of that Suburban we eventually had to make a decision on what to do, buy a diesel Ford Excursion or Swap a Duramax and Allison in to our Suburban, the Ford rode so bad that we went the swap route with zero regrets. With the wife, 3 kids and 2 dogs it was very comfortable and towed like dream. So I quickly became a GM guy. When it came time to finally switch to a truck in 2020 as the kids aged out I looked at them all. RAM (terrible payload numbers in the 2500), Ford (still rode like crap) and Chevy/GMC (just right). Even though the GM just never got any love from the testers on RUclips, RAM and Ford always won in their tests, I was scratching my head. I keep saying, this truck performs great, why do they always pick a truck that either rides terrible or has such low payload numbers it barely would qualify as an HD. Is the interior design really that important to the performance of an HD truck.. So thank you for the honest assessment. And as far as gas goes, their is a reason why the GM V8 is great, from the venerable 350 to the ground breaking LS, GM gas engines have always performed, and now that it has a 10 speed behind it, its going to do well. Keep it up, I have subscribed.

Nothing irks me more than some guy giving a review of a high trim truck that every other channel is reviewing. I would never buy one so all the over priced features don’t interest me. Nice wrap up and you did a great job with a very real world test. 174 miles is a very typical towing trip for guys. When I go racing my minimum trip is 176 mile round trip and my more common trip is 260. So good job.
My take away is I’m not surprised. I’ve had a 2022 2500 6.6 gas 6 speed and as far as towing stability goes the truck is rock solid. I don’t have great roads either in East Kentucky and especially in Southwest Virginia and I tow my 8.5’x24’ enclosed car trailer with one hand on the wheel. It’s rock solid. And a lot of that is the weight of the Chevys. They are just heavier than the Ford and that extra weight is what you need to control these big heavy trailers.
So good job. Hopefully the hurt feelings Ford guys won’t bust you up too bad. And I wouldn’t be shocked if they didn’t report you to TFL on the last videos. Those comment sections were pretty intense and I’m sure this one is going to be much of the same.

I will say if you ordered a 2500 at4, that is one of the best looking trucks you can get, and big red is crushing it pulling. Maybe it was indeed for the best. From what I have seen if you are unlucky enough to have a problem with the 7.3 Ford will replace it with the 6.6 GM says that's normal. At the mpgs you would need to add 6 quarts of oil every 5k miles. If GM would stand behind the product better it would make my decision much easier. But right now l am leaning toward the 7.3 . As a side note last night at a truck stop in Va. I saw a Chevy with the hood up with the driver adding 2 quarts of oil. Again thanks for the series.

Just my 2 cents opinion... I ordered my 2021 F350 with a 7.3l Godzilla , 3.73 rear gear, to tow our 8400# tt. I debated over the diesel, but just too many problems with emissions. The lifter was not a publicized issue at time of order, but I still would have gone the gas route. VERY few numbers of lifter failures; VERY large numbers of emission problems. Expensive repairs + $10k extra up front. I travel at 62-64 and on a 4200 mile trip up & down 3 major passes & mtns and numerous other. I averaged 10.3mpg's. Friend with like tt with a 2020 Duramax got ~1.5 mpg better. He also had to pay ~$1 more per gal + DEF. Yes he has way more torque, but I had no issues keeping up. NEVER foot to the floor. 3rd gear a couple of times. when going up any sizable hills I shift manually & keep the rpm's in the 3500-4500 range. This way I'm at torque & the tranny is not 'hunting'. With the 10 spd tranny & tow/ haul I rarely used my brakes going down any major hill. In fact a Class A motor home behind me told me that my brake lights must be out after going down a very long steep hill. Unless there is a major change in the diesel engine emission controls; I will not own a diesel.

So I’m with you. I’m not buying another diesel until the after treatment stuff is fixed/made more reliable. I’m loving my 2022 6.6 gas Chevy. I’m at over 26,000 miles and so far so good. Watching his videos though is making me really smother for a 2024 with the 10 speed lol.

@@matthewanderson9912 I’ve had a fair number of trucks over the last 50 years but only one GM. Way back a 1971 3/4t GMC Serra. 400” big block ( they also made a 400 small block) it was a great towing machine. After that all fords & a couple dodges. I test drove chev’s but didn’t purchase. Friend did just the opposite. I think they’re all pretty good, it’s a matter of personal preference. My last ford had a 6 sped. Worked great. The initial thought of a 10 spd , I thought was ridiculous . In actuality, it’s so smooth. It’s almost like a CVT tranny. I do manually shift going up hills though. It wants to wait and then down shift 2 gears at times. When I see a hill coming I go to “m” and keep the rpm’s in the 3500-4500 range and do not loose any speed at all.

@@herb7877 well I’m a Chevy guy but I have driven plenty of Fords at work and a few Dodges.
Going from a 4 speed to a 6 speed automatic was a huge game changer for gas engines. I feel like getting the 10 speed is maybe not as big a game changer but definitely an improvement. It has a ratio so that you’re basically never out of the engines power where with a 6 speed there is certain speeds where you get kind of “caught” in a gear and end up spending a few seconds building rpm to get going.
From watching reviews and reading owners reviews/observations it does seem the Ford 10 speed is way more busy than the GM 10 speed. I’ve not drove the 6.6 gas with the 10 speed yet but I owned one in a diesel like I mentioned. Hard to compare between a turbo diesel and a NA gas small block but it was not busy.
The L8T is a 400.5 cubic inch small block. Pretty impressive engine. Makes over 400 foot pounds of torque from
2000-5000 rpm. That’s more than the outgoing 6.0 Vortec made at peak, much less at 2000 rpm.

Everybody is hanging their hat on HP or torque, and whichever is highest is the winner.
In the past I was running that same route with older used chevy trucks running V8s that had less than 325 hp and around 290 to 340 ft lb of torque. They would Rev up and walk right up those grades and could hold back down the other side if you started slow and locked the trans down in 2 ND gear. I would Coast down the mountain and have very few brake applications and just took my time.
It all comes down to gearing and how you use it.
We ran deeper geared axles and had horrible gas milage empty but that ain't why you buy a towing truck.
You want it to handle the job safely. If you have to whine about fuel milage , pull a smaller load.
We used to drag campers that weighed 14,000 lbs and weren't that long.
We had stock trailers that when empty weighed as much as some of the new 30 foot ultralight campers..

Eventually that transmission blew up. Decided to put an Allison in. The shop did what it had to, to mate the Allison to the engine. 2 things. What were gear ratios? 3:73 vs 3:73? And second, the ford manual says 91 octane recommend but not required. If the engine is already optimized to run on 87, not much will change with 91. The computer compensates. A solid axle will always be a stronger option, and a direct injected only motor will be an issue down the road with soot build up. Good video series!

The Ford is 3.55 and the Chevy is 3.73. The Chevy also has an inch taller tire making the two within 32 rpm at 65mph. The only way to make them any closer would be to knock off about .5" off the Ford's tire height. With the Ford having 40k miles on it, that's probably already happened.

    • @AFoxintheWild

@@Featherburner That makes sense. I just purchased a 23 dually with the 7.3 for truck camper duty. I have noticed that the 3:55 ratio is dropped across the line on the 7.3. Mine are 4:30s. I have a 19 F350 with the 3:73 and it has been good, plenty of power for the camper, just needed more payload. Back to the octane quandary, the manual on the 19 states towing/hauling in high temps 91 is recommended. But before that is says that the engine is designed for 87. I’ve tried both with that truck, no difference in mpg or power. It’s a 6.2. The literature states the same for my new 23. I might try the test again, but don’t know if it’s worth it. Kong just did better because control, as it wasn't as powerful by the numbers. When it comes to the SES systems, whether sumo or timbren, they are a benefit always. I've ran both and I like the timbren better, although nothing wrong with sumo. Just with the bumps and potential movement of the load and trailer, you'll enjoy having them vs not. They are great to have and when empty you won't notice any difference in ride, but with the load, sag will almost be nothing and the control will be excellent. They are a great investment if anyone tows. I put them on all my pickups, half ton or big trucks, and I prefer them over expensive air bags or other systems. I believe it's a mod that you would not regret.

Thanks so much for the videos, they are super helpful for me. I'm one of those who use downshifting on grades instead of relying on cruise control, mainly because the Tundra on cruise will let things get a little out of hand with the 6 speed transmission. Because of payload constraints (we tow a 6,500 lb Airstream), I'm trading in my 2016 Tundra for a 2024 Chevy Custom gas engine. I don't have a brand loyalty other than we've owned nothing but Toyotas for the past 30 years. I am no longer deciding between Ford and Chevy, but I do like the towing videos you have done. We travel full time in our Airstream so this is important. The only reason we're getting a 2024 is because of the 10 speed transmission. My question is (and keep in mind my current tow vehicle is older tech, 7 years old!) when you set the cruise control for a downhill grade but then apply brakes to slow down some, when you hit the resume on the cruise control, does the transmission have issues with figuring out which gear to be in? @matthewanderson9912 Год назад +3

The Chevy has 34” tires compared to 33” for the Ford so taking that into account the gearing was really similar. Fords transmission has a little shorter gearing too in 3rd gear (2.13:1 compared to 2.06:1) and that was the gear both stayed in going up and down the most so it’s really similar.
To put it in perspective the Ford on gearing alone had a 7.56:1 final drive in 3rd compared to 7.68:1 for the Chevy. When you factor in the tire size, at 5000 rpm the Fords max speed would be basically 65 mph (64.94 technically)and the Chevy would be 66 mph (65.85 technically) so the Ford actually has shorter gearing (slightly) as tested.
Of course it would have benefited from a 3.73 rear gear. 4.30 not so much in my opinion because it would have been stuck in 4th gear. And by comparison, it would have had a max speed of 64.52 mph so slightly shorter but very comparable.
I always say the 3.73 is the best gear, even for the Ford, and that’s because of the 10 speed transmission. These new 10 speeds make up for taller rear gearing by having close ratios.

If you mentioned it somewhere along the way I missed it. I currently tow a 7500lb travel trailer with the 5.0 Coyote engine and would like a lot more low end torque in the mountains. Thanks for the great work and help

Actually, how is the low end torque on both trucks?

Ok, so maybe I’m not sold on the Godzilla after your latest video. How’s the low end torque on the Chevy?

I just commented on TFL'S latest video. I asked if there are any other channels they plan on shutting down. 😂

Bro. You are killing the info war. Thanks for what you are doing. Don’t let those keyboard freaks bother you. I’m still looking for truck real world examples and you are it. 100%.

Now test the 2023 F250 7.3 and see if anything changed and by how much.

To amp your mention about the Ford mirrows are horrible, its like looking through a fog.
So bad that months ago there was a recall for these cameras, but 6 months later Ford still dont have the parts sent to the dealers.😢

Curious on the premium fuel in the 6.6. GM advises to not use premium in the L8T. It is designed for regular.

Your videos have helped me cement my choice on a 2024 Silverado HD. Currently have a 2020 Ram HD diesel and am dealing with emissions issues. Going to trade in for a gasser as the new transmission from GM seems more than capable for rv towing. Plus I’ll gain more payload capacity.

Ended up getting my new Chevy 2500 a few days after this post. Truck handles well pulling out 9000 lb TT. Great truck! If only I can Google to stop talking to me.

The Chevy doesn’t have an Allison transmission!! Branded only!!! Allison doesn’t make a ten speed!

Just going to point out an observation, I just finished the ford and Chevy hill climb videos & I’m not sure how your times worked out the way they did. Your ford video is only 7 minutes long, the Chevy video is almost 9 minutes long. 🤷‍♂️

Did you also notice the scenery is different at the start of both videos? The original videos started at the same spot and the Ford video was much longer but they got taken down by RUclips because the other channel that does this test complained to the tube. So, in order to repost the videos, they had to be edited to remove the Trademarked name of the test.

@@Featherburner looked to me like he was on the ramp, getting on the interstate in both videos. The video does start earlier on the ramp in the Chevy, but sure doesn’t look like it would account for 2 minutes. Maybe something else got edited out in the ford video, but I wasn’t really watching close enough to catch it.

If you ever get another 7.3 would you consider doing and ecu tune like the one from 5 star? Something Ide be really curious to see is just how well these HD trucks pull with a handful of bolt on mods.
On a side note, I like the L8t but something that frustrates me is the lack of aftermarket support as far as tuners. Same with the 6.4 hemi

Tow ratings are more about braking than HP. The extra curb weight of the Chevy may be the brakes 😊

They don't own the road, kind of shady by TFL. Just call it the Eisenhower? Congrats on the channel growth!
