I'd love to see some content about how rolling count relates to the triples, particularly depending on whether the rhythm is straight or swung

Hi there, Thats' a great idea. I'm adding it to the list. Since I don't want to be the authority on the subject... I'm going to try to do an interview with a well respected head judge. Can you do me a favor? Shoot me an email with any specific questions you have! Brian@WestCoastSwingOnline.com Thanks! -B

Triolet is actually a very simple concept to any musician (this is not a poly rythm after all), but how it is explained in wcs makes me cry in a bad way.
Some explain 1 as "a", then end is foot collecting, then "a" is a weight transfer. (literally king swing class month ago). Some explain it the way it is on a video. As a musician I sometimes want to give up after class. I feel like I'm trying to learn a new language by repeating every word from person, who's not native without any understanding of grammar.

Counting music for dance is far different than for music. Those who do both have to find a way to work through the differences.

When working forwards, (3:13) you are stepping ball of the foot first, while Megan is stepping heel first. Is that a leader-follower difference or mood of the moment difference. Could you say Which is preferable?

Heel leads verses toes leads are a preference for both leader and followers. Heel leads allow for more control as a newer dancer mainly bc rolling toe to heel is harder. I have a ballet background so toe leads are more natural, however I actually use a combination of toe and heel leads through out the dance and depending on who I'm dancing with.

@@WestCoastSwingOnline thank you for the detailed explanation. It looked a bit rumba-ish because of the added hip movement, which some tango leaders also do, though heel leads are way more preferable even in argentine tango.

How do I reconcile this with "West Coast Swing Foundation Patterns - Skippy Blair" video posted by Swango1cars at 6min 53sec where Skippy Blair says, "for the lead, the & a before the foot is released"?

    • @WestCoastSwingOnline

GREAT question. The body is being release AND the foot during the beat. So the same concept applies to the foot and the body. In my video I just chose to focus on the easier part (moving your feet) rather that the slightly more complex part. BUT I'll totally do a video that ties them together. Thanks for the great question and feedback! -Brian

A critical point you leave out is rolling count should be used only with music where the beats are broken into threes, swing music that is. Using this count for straight eighths music, which comprised a majority of west coast swing music, would be a musical mistake. Timing of the dance should match the timing of the music.

"Rolling count for dancers" is different than rolling count in music. It's really just a way to describe the leg action. The choice of how to time that to the music it up to the artistic interpretation of the dancer. I had the wrong idea about "rolling cout" to before sitting down with the late Skippy Bair who set me straight. "rolling count for dancers" is a brilliant way to think about preparing the free foot for a step in any dance! Hope that helps clarify my thoughts. Thanks for sharing yours :-) -Brian

Well certainly the way that Brian described it only applies to a triple-time (shuffle) rhythm since that it what he was counting out. Since the video illustrates it6 multiple times, it would have made more sense for Brian to show how to do it with triple time, and then do it with straight time (1 e & a 2 2 & a....).
