Well done. That's one of those things you just feel comfortable with your car after completing. Another thing that would be helpful on a rusty car is a decent set of taps and dies to chase / clean threads. My son has a 2005 Touring that spend most of it's life in Ohio. I have yet to see underneath it, but the front sway bolts are stuck and the rear spring perch arm's eccentric bolt had seized up inside the control arm and broke during an alignment (the shop covered the labor, I ended up buying two new arms and all 4 of the eccentric bolts from SPC for a little more adjustment).
That was really a lot of work to do but man you did a great job! Result looks awesome to me. And the spray wax is surely a superb idea on top. Already hyped for the next episode, didn't even expect such a zinc plating set to exist... Keep up your good work and as always the best wishes from Bavaria
Nice work. I went through almost identical to this on my 97 Saab 9000 Aero last year. 3 Months off the road and did the whole chassis and all arches. Looked like new when i had finished. Its a lot of work, but should add another 15-20 years to the chassis potentially.
Real labour of love with this proper rust prevention is a great Idea to preserve a modern classic, had an early ibiza gti in 2005 it was getting bad I wish I had known of this stuff it was full of filler in the end.

Would be interesting to see long term results with this kit. I used the same kit on a Land Rover chassis and rust started to appear through the epoxy mastic within a few months.
Did you get any drains in the garage floor.... ? then you can wash rinse spray... under cover and it all goes away..... try something called vatcan.. for treating rust they used to use it on battleships..... N x
Surprised you didn't find any holes! What happened to the rusted arch? Did you have to cut into it for this section? Did the rust come back through the treated areas or has this treatment definitely stopped it?

Nice work! Isn't that 40 Grid Disc a bit too agressive for just removing rust? I use these to grind down welds and stuff. I'd recommend a nylon-fiber disc - these remove paint and rust but leave healthy metal. Also I would have pressure washed the underside before starting work on it.
Thanks mate. They recommend 80 grit but I got better results with a 40. Tried a Nylon-fiber, they are good but they are so expensive compared to a flap disc.
Second!! Great effort Neil, but why not give the underside / wheel arches a damn good clean before hand with a pressure washer and some elbow grease? Or did I miss that?

no, por15 sucks compared to epoxy. I've used both for rust repairs on cars. por15 is famed to take in moisture from existing rust, but this doesn't stop it spreading it in practice. So, you have to do the full prep process Neil shows here for either por15 or epoxy in order to prevent new rust growth. and epoxy is far more durable than por15. trust me, save yourself the aggro later on.
That rust is going to come straight back! You didn't remove enough of it in the pitted areas. Epoxy mastic is so durable so you wont notice it creeping underneath.
I would have thought the wire brushing would have come before the degreasing? It seems counter productive to degrease something (unless it was caked in grease) prior to removing most of that surface with abrasives? Lookslike you caught that car before things got too bad.
Wouldn't it be better to degrease the metal after the rust removal with the angle grinder? That way you'll wash away all the rust dust created by the grinder.
I am lazy, I bring my cars to Dinitrol, they are steamwashed , dried and then put in a thick layer of grease, but this is much more satisfying and you do not have to deal with dirty hands when working on the car later on because everything is covered with the stuff.
I've been rust obsessed for years. what concerns me about rust treatments like your spray at the end is, the rust can give off its own gases which fuel the continuation of the process. only worse because the trapped gases create a concentrated environment for rust to occur unlike in the atmosphere if it's not sealed in. you may have escaped this if the part is totally free of any moisture.
I'll add, my ongoing experiment has been (of course) with power washing the chassis down the same day if it's been on salted roads but also spraying acf50 oil on it routinely multiple times a year. same age zed and only has surface rust on the brackets but none on the chassis. similar mileage.
Wow, having lived and lived in the UK until the 70s I know how 70s cars corroded in the UK winters but I am surprised to see even modern cars corroding so quickly. I left the UK for New Zealand in the 70s and I have lived in Perth Australia for 30 years, so I have hardly seen a corroded car since. No salt on the roads over here.

The arch repair will be done in the coming months. Will do a follow up video to see how the rust proofing is holding up.

I thought the same - Car Cleaning Guru would have had them arches gleaming before any degreasing took place.

Restored metal is a beautiful sight.

You need a well ventilated room. If not then a suitable mask.

According to Rust Buster wire brushing pushing salts into the metal so you need to de-salt first.
