I've been wanting to know how these lasers go on rusty metal for SO LONG! Thanks for this video guys!!!! It's actually good that it burns away thin areas so you can see what really needs to be replaced.
Well, it was a combination of rust, dirt, grease, sound deadening, and paint. just removing sound deadening would have been at least half the weight I would reckon; as I've stripped a car's interior before and learned just how much everything weighed.
I guess would have been a lot of it is sound deadening material weight and all of the stuff they stripped off from the underside of the car. It may not seem like much fine sand and dirt but over that much area, the weight of all that sand stuck to the dirt and the frame can weigh quite a bit. Ever try and pick up a 5-gallon bucket full of sand? It weighs quite a bit.
Would be interesting to know what you thought of the car you stripped driving it on a normal road ? The answer is; UNBEARABLE. Sounds like you are inside a tin biscuit box with marbles inside. The ONLY cushioning is the tyres. Impossible NOT to have all that sound deadening stuff if you want a daily driver. So although we all knew what the result would be; a far more interesting topic would be how to reduce the noise level of a tin box WITHOUT adding too much weight and WHAT to do it with.

It is probably cheaper in the long term than sandblasting. It doesn't consume sandblasting media, only needs electricity. Doesn't require a sand-blasting box. Though the possible instant eye destruction is a scary part of it.
Take the shell and soak it in salt water for a year. Probably be a big difference with the metal having no protection on it over the other car you put in salt water. Thanks for the videos!! Always enjoy watching them!
If you let the body panels develop “sugar rust” like that, and then immerse it in boiling water for an hour or so, it’ll convert to the black iron oxide, which is commonly called “bluing” on firearms. It’s a stable protective coating that doesn’t add any mass like paint.
That was surprising. When they were getting ready to hoist the car up for the second time I guessed at 30kg based on roughly how much new sound deadening and 4 or 5L of primer/paint would weigh. Either the paint is REALLY thick on Ladas, there's more sound deadening than I was picturing, or that ones lost an extra 12kg of rust. :D
Perhaps there was a Zinc coat on top of the metal, it evaporates and burns easy. Zinc shakes known to welders when you weld zinc protected tubes-parts...
@@ljubomirculibrk4097 Interesting idea, but I'm thinking it's unlikely. Zinc's a pretty good conductor of heat, so it would take a fair bit more power to flash vaporise that than it takes to just burn off paint and rust. If you watch the process they're having to make a couple of passes to get all the paint off, so I doubt they were pushing enough energy into it to melt any zinc that may have been there. Thats perfect for a good coating of rust converter 🤗, you let it get a layer of rust for the converter to cling to and convert 🤗, and then it goes an awesome solid black that you can paint on as soon as its completely dry.
I'm looking at how much Bondo came off the car as well as the other stuff. Ideas for what to do with the car? Ok, find a really strong engine and transmission, and stuff them in there. Maybe see about building the ultimate snow runner. All wheel drive, lift it a couple inches on the suspension, bigger tires, more fuel capacity, roll cage, lighting, heater, and everything that can make it fun off-road.
This is not just the paint. This car has been painted in the past. You could see it when you scrape the paint. Most of the dents were smoothened with a hammer. However, the bare metal shows many dents which have been covered with filler that was polished before painting. Many rust holes were filled with a filler as well. And you have the residues on the engine itself.

In Russia electricity is pretty cheap, yes but they are a special case. They live in Novosibirsk, the world capital of coin miners. Electricity there is dirty cheap because of a cascade of hydroelectric power stations in that region, so since there are not so many factories left, they subsidize locals with very cheap surplus electricity.
You should set it outside for a month or two, let it rust as much as it will, then weight it before and after stripping the rust to see how much metal is removed. That would be interesting.
My suggestion, make it the quietest Lada ever. Heavy sound deadening material everywhere realistically possible and neoprene sound deadening on top where ever possible. Weigh the car after that. After that is done put all the interior back and drive the car and see how quiet and luxurious it feels.
I noticed that it causes the body panels to warp quite a bit. You can see this easily in the time lapses. I imagine all the warping just gives you more bodywork to do than it's worth. That or you could turn the heat down to not overheat the metal.

How many VODKA bottles were pulled from under the seats?
Не знаю, пойду у медведя спрошу
The best way to remove sound deadening is with a dry ice cleaner.
Everyone in this episode died of cancer…

This is not just the paint. This car has been painted in the past. You could see it when you scrape the paint. Most of the dents were smoothened with a hammer. However, the bare metal shows many dents which have been covered with filler that was polished before painting. Many rust holes were filled with a filler as well. And you have the residues on the engine itself.
I'm thinking when you got rid of the rust you also got rid of some of the iron that was with it. This would explain the "excess" loss.
That's an awesome piece of kit. I didn't even know it was a thing.
South Africans where are you
digging inside a hollow tree, looking for supper!!!
Awe my fellow kinders van die modaland 😂
They in russia
SA here😅dit you see the guy climbing out of the boot(trunk)
Ooohhh jirre no man what's going on here
10:13 And there he is, answering the important questions xD!!
(I was wondering the exact same thing)
That laser sure warped the heck out of it! The Bondo filler you'll need to make it straight again will quadruple what you took off 😂
The metal barely gets warm in the process. I dont know much about Lada, but i assume they do not warp if left outside in the sun.
@@JohnDoe-qt9ci Just look at the roof when they show the before and after. You can clearly see it is "creased". Also in the last shot if you check out the doors, they are the same.
You can also use dry ice to easily remove the material stuck to the floorpan, it will freeze and it will crack away clean.
I'd love to have one of these Laser machines

Нанести лаком рисунок, дать остальному заржаветь и снова нанести лак, потом химическое воронение по кайме.
Apply a varnish design, let the rest rust and apply varnish again, then chemically bluing the edge.
The power bill for that laser machine is going to be painful.
Electricity is very cheap in russia
In Russia electricity is pretty cheap, yes but they are a special case. They live in Novosibirsk, the world capital of coin miners. Electricity there is dirty cheap because of a cascade of hydroelectric power stations in that region, so since there are not so many factories left, they subsidize locals with very cheap surplus electricity.
looks like i need one of those lasers, for doing the dishes at work.....

awesome video, now you must polish the metal to perfection like a mirror! I've always wanted a car like that...

I saw it said 8 minutes ago, thought I would be first. But damn! You and these bots are fast! (Not calling you a bot, bro)
Show of hands, who was not surprised with the 1st weigh 😂
I believe most of the weight removed was from stripping off the stuff inside.
For you Americans like me 42 kg is 92.6 pounds
Thank you G54!!! Def considering this in upcoming weight reduction needs
You should set it outside for a month or two, let it rust as much as it will, then weight it before and after stripping the rust to see how much metal is removed. That would be interesting.
Laser strippers are AWESOME. I'll bet that 2/3 of the weight was in the sound dampening material. That's some DENSE stuff.
I should get this for my mother-in-law lip and legs. This is a awesome machine.
My suggestion, make it the quietest Lada ever. Heavy sound deadening material everywhere realistically possible and neoprene sound deadening on top where ever possible. Weigh the car after that. After that is done put all the interior back and drive the car and see how quiet and luxurious it feels.
I can't help but think how much easier that laser would make striping off the last remnants of a gasket that has become one with the engine block.
I noticed that it causes the body panels to warp quite a bit. You can see this easily in the time lapses. I imagine all the warping just gives you more bodywork to do than it's worth. That or you could turn the heat down to not overheat the metal.
That laser is awesome, would love to have one for my own projects.
